Crysis coming to the PS3?

After telling the world that next generation consoles were too weak to handle Crysis, it seems Crytek might be releasing one of its most anticipated games not only for the PC but also for the PS3. In an article posted by Games Radar titled, Crysis PS3 first look, a brief description of Crysis and its components is given-"You are tasked with saving the world from aggressive extra-terrestrials, who've ploughed a pretty big asteroid into a Pacific island's countryside." Then, in an effort to confirm our speculations, Game Radar goes on to say, "You'll be astounded by the game - it's jaw-dropping."
Although Crytek mentioned more than once that the current consoles would not be able to handle Crysis, it does not make sense of the fact that at one point, they were looking for ps3 programmers. On their website, Crytek states the responsibilities of the said job.

• Development of a Next-Generation Game Framework based on CryEngine 2.0.
• Work on various aspects of porting to PS3 and creating solutions to get the utmost out of the PS3

If the rumor of Crysis on the PS3 is in fact confirmed and the PS3 is able to run this game near perfection, the demarcation between the strength of the PC and next generation consoles will weaken and the limitations of consoles might for a time, be forgotten.

If it goes to the ps3 it will go to the xbox. Cause its clearly easier to port to the xbox, and so they will need guys to work on the ps3 version more. Also it would make sense for a port to happen - because yes the consoles may not be able to handle an optimised version of crisis - but then there aren't many computers out there that can, and so you can reduce the visuals slightly to handle it. I'd expect the same for consoles.

who said anything about the xbox?? if this article or this rumor was about the xbox the title would've been ''Crysis Coming to the 360'' but its not so shut it.. nex-gen consoles cant handle this game it was confirmed, but PS3 is not nex-gen its best-gen, something for its own and once devs start really puttin affort into the games made for PS3 u'll see the difirence ;)

Holy Moly. Dude come on - I doubt that they'd only make it for pc and ps3...and I'm sure the 360 can handle it as it seems to be handling everything just as well, if not better at this moment in time, than the ps3 - the hole story is a rumour only led by a post for people to develop on the ps3. My reasoning is that there is a great need for specialist who know the ps3 architecture, whereas the 360 is pretty simple to port from pc, so they dont need to pay outside developers....pretty sound non?

Back to Crysis. Perhaps it could be just as good on the ps3. Reading about the new Havok 4.5, where it was said that Havok 4 made the ps3 just behind a three core PC, but Havok 4.5 was designed to especially make use of the ps3's SPU's, and is said to be twice as powerful as Havok 4...So who knows, perhaps it could be just as good (I know this engine isn't Havok, but if one engine can do it, then I'm sure another can.)

Though there may be a memory limitation on the ps3. But then again, after seeing 128mb of flash memory after someone had opened it up, it seems the ps3 has gained back 100mb of memory that is meant to be wasting on its OS...I digress

Actually I think is confirmed that people will be able to play this game over on their XP based computers. Meaning that they will be able to run the game using DirectX 9. Ofcourse the graphics will not look good as good as if they are running a DirectX 10 compatible GPU on Vista. I think the same can be said about this game if made for the PS3 and the Xbox 360, there is no such thing as not being able to run on consoles. Ofcourse it will not look as good as the PC but I'm sure developers can downgrade the game to be able to execute on consoles. Besides we are talking about EA which means this game will most likely be ported to every they can. If this game would be a 1st party than it would be a different story.

Yes, it would be a really good decision for Crytek to bring it to BOTH consoles...but maybe Sony payed them. It IS one of the only games keeping the PC alive this year...Sony may have ACTUALLY taken advantage of that. I do assume it will come to both consoles however...

Nowhere - it just says they are looking for people to code on the ps3. I wouldn't trust games radar as a source for reliable information. I have read an interview with the makers of crysis - and it says they don't intend to move crysis to consoles yet, but that they are pleased by the interest. Looking for ps3 coders could be for another game using the engine.

But as the guy below me says - PC and consoles are very different. And the advantage of the Cell is yet to be discovered.

BUT - how much of a failing is it of the cell, that the spu's have no access to the xdr memory or video memory? Only the PPE can access all the memory, but the spe's can only access their on board memory...that a problem?

Also - ps3 does have blu-ray, but I wouldn't call that an advantage for a pc game, since the PC version will be on DVD's damn it - although it does say on the PC version that you need 6gb harddrive space to install it - and a harddrive is something all ps3's have.

Also all ps3 games on blu-ray are compressed - its much quicker to load compressed files and the cell is much faster at decompressing files than it is at reading them.

Actual PC graphic cards have 512MB Ram and above. And there's a lot more memory required for the game code. This large areas and view distance with high detailed graphics can't be done on PS3 or 360.

If you know anything about vista, you'll know it a big ram hog. You can't compare what it takes to run Crysis. take a good look at the inside of the ps3 the nivida's RSX processer is less then 1 inch from the Main cpu surrounded my the 8 cores. I help my roommate build pc's all the time. He is a tech guy at Compusa. He is always showing me all the problems of the distance of the processer and ram from the cpu and the bottle necking problems. Even with the very fast PCI slots that run almost direct to the main cpu they are far from perfect... Long rant short. A pc is like a huge Lincon town car with a 500hp engine. Yea it runs fast but it takes alot more to get that heavy hunk of metal to move. Game systems are like lil honda civics with a 300 hp engine. smaller and more efficient, But only so upgraded before they max out. That dork talking about how Crysis is too powerful! is just blowing smoke up our asses. He is just a kiss butt PC fanboy that wants to send shivers down out spines. They could bring Crysis to Ps2 if they really wanted, even though it would look like crap it still wouldn't be very hard. it would be like when I try to run doom 3 on my on board Video. it looks like a Sega mastersystem game but it still runs.

it doesn'y seem to make sense that they claim crysis cant run on console when both Xbox 360 and ps3 have the Cry engine 2 in the processor chip set and crytek said it themself that both the 360 are capable of running the engine fine... because that version of the cry engine is centric to there specific strenghts and weaknesses so simply downgrading Crysis for ps3 and Xbox 360 is quite easy to do, it may not match it's highly highly detail beautiful pc counter part but it will surely still be prettier than Gears of war on both consolse for sure. and as for EA they are only the publishers, i beleive that Crytek is working on both console verions. i mean just look at it the first game Farcry came out for pc and Xbox, and then for the Wii with farcry vegence, and tht was based on cryengine 1.0 the Xbox and ps3 architect is so close to PCs now and and have more processing power they basically can hang with the pc now.. if Epic can run UT3 on ps3 pc and Xbox 360 then Crytek can do it i think they are lazy or just waiting for the right moment to confirm it. both Ps3 and Xbox 360 will get this game at some point and will also have games running on the cry engine 2 in the future, lets just wait and see

crytk could have crysis run on a PSP, a game like oblivion which is for NEXT Gen Console such as ps3 and XBOX 360 and pc is being ran on the psp and is due for march... Bethesda isn't any more capable of doing it than the folks at Crytek are so all that BS about crysis not running on consoles is just smoke and mirriors crap. if for the same reason i dont like the fact that bethesda said the Wii cant handle oblivion when they are doing it on the psp. to be frank, they just dont want to ecause they are lazy. so to the folks of Crytek, get off that lazy Arse and get to wok, becaus ewe here dont believe any of your bs... u are all just more favourable about the pc than u are about the consoles.

The final size of resistance was 16GB, and that was due to the fact that they further improved their compression techniques and eliminated PAL format video. The PS3 was powerful enough to convert NTSC video into PAL format on the fly. However, it's surprising that it would have taken two DVDs to make Resistance work without the PS3's Blu-ray drive. This would've meant switching discs just to play multiplayer mode, amongst other problems.

It'll be interesting to see how much larger 2nd-gen PS3 titles will become, with developers like Hideo Kojima already begging for Dual-layer (50GB) Blu-ray discs.

Insomniac used compression and games have used compression for a long time, but I doubt they used procedural synthesis. This is how oblivion is able to fit all of those distinctive trees and vegetation in their world and keep the game around 5 gigabytes. Procedural synthesis could and has changed the rules of the game just like mp3's changed the music and vc1 changed hi-def. With downloadable games on the horizon 50 gigabyte games will not be the norm and not where the industry wants to be. The cost to produce a 50 gigabyte game (with 50 gigs of actual content) would be enormous and a huge risk. The other problem is do people want to invest 50 or 60 hours in one game. In most cases I would say no. I think episodic content is more where the industry is heading for games with hundreds of hours of content. The upfront investment isn't so huge and you get to ugrade your engine/gameplay or change your story as you go along. Downloaded monthly, quarterly or whenever.

They want to be the next Epic and sell their game engine as well. I believe all eyes are on Epic at this point and the PS3 fan base. Epic has stated publicly that UT3 on the PS3 will be indistinguishable from the PC running at the same resolution. The only noticeable difference will come from PCs that have the AGEIA PhysX Card which even the PS3 can match when doing physic calculations.

If Epic can live up to the hype and bring out a near PC perfect Port of UT3 to the PS3 with Keyboard/mouse support, you just might see other die hard PC Game Developers retooling their software for the PS3. The other thing, if I'm not mistaken is that Sony chose to go with open industry standard online service. It may not be the cheaper method but it does make it easier to play PS3 vs PC - especially if the controller is an issue people could easily just grab their PC Keyboard/mouse (that a lot of video game owners probably have) and just take the advantage away.

Crysis may never come out, but if their competitors are constantly taking advantage of the lower cost of Next Gen Gaming on the consoles and making a profit, they stand to lose out.

Crytek just favoring the prepared....

Lets just keep our eyes on UT3 and see how good that game really turns out for the PS3 - if its as good as Epic claims and sells well - just might see more PC Developers on the bandwagon.

when did compression become such a great thing? Anything and everything that needs to be compressed loses quality in some way. on a DVD you add load times. Or in games you lose sound quality or need to repeat backgrounds or objects over and over again. If you have a blueray player with a good sound system you know what I mean. on my sound system I can chose from normal digital dts 5.1 sound or PCM true uncompressed sound. when watching a blueray movie I like to switch back and forth. I difference is huge. it sound almost like you taking ears plugs out when you switch to PCM umcompressed. Ever unzipped a super compressed file? it takes forever! So stop making up excuses about DVD's have plenty of memory because they don't not when running a 720p game or higher. Still don't get it? go download a good movie clip from Apple.com first look at the 640/480 clips memory. Next look at the same clip in 1080p....I rest my case.

As a publisher or developer, you don't wait for others to create those installed numbers for you because that just means you're missing out on sales. Without the release of compelling software, there's no incentive for people to purchase that system in the first place. Team Ninja knows this already with Ninja Gaiden, as does Criterion with Burnout 5.

The real monkey wrench in this topic is that we don't know how much influence EA has over Crytek. Technically, Crytek could get anyone to publish this title. I wouldn't be surprised if Crytek chose one system over the other due to tech spec requirements, whatever they happen to be. After the PC version is finished things might spread about a bit, but...

Face it: The next-gen consoles have not enough power and memory for crysis. It's true, consoles needn't much memory for OS and backgroundtasks. But it's still much to less for those high detailed highres graphics.
