Review: 80GB PlayStation 3 a superb gaming console

There's general agreement that Sony stumbled out of the gate with the PlayStation 3.

Months of intense hype were followed by a late launch (fully a year after the Xbox 360) and a staggering $600 price tag for the deluxe model. Even worse, the PS3 didn't initially have any real must-have exclusive titles, and despite the power of its vaunted Cell processor, multiplatform games from third-party developers didn't look appreciably better than the respective titles on the Xbox 360.

Since then, the company's been modifying the PlayStation product line to better fit the competitive market landscape. As of August 2008, a new "bargain" PS3 is available with a larger, 80GB hard drive, and a "deluxe" model is due in November, doubling the capacity to 160GB.

No BC = FAILED!

Pennywise5640d ago

Yeah cause we all know how PS3 owners love to play last gen games...

Stryfeno25639d ago

Goog for you...But I won't touch a PS3 unless Sony brings back BC and I will bet I'm not the only one who thinks that way.

TheMART5639d ago

@ Pennywise

Indeed, PS3 gamers play last gen games, but in reality those aren't PS2 games. Its the PS3 games that in general give a last gen feeling actually.

By the way, 360 has more great games:

360 126 games on or over 8 out of 10 average

PS3 83 games on or over 8 out of 10 average

Price (overhere in The Netherlands)

360 Arcade: 149 Euro
360 Premium: 199 Euro
PS3: 399 Euro

For half the price of a PS3 or even less it gives more, even the best XBOX 1 games play on the 360 while there is no BC on the PS3 besides the launch model. I still here the PS fanboys cry that the PS3 played all PS2 games and the 360 got only a selection by software emulation. Fun part today is that all 360's with a HDD are able to play XBOX 1 games and the PS3 has a total lack of BC. If you use it or not, its pretty funny to see the 360 does a better job there also.

Kush_Reaper5639d ago

If you really wanted a backwords compatible ps3 you would have gotten one at launch like most of us did. Guess we now know the reason, you coudn't afford it. We know 360 fanbrats are cheap arses who buy cheap hardware.

OBAMA

earwax5639d ago

How many is this now? If you want BC you should have bought the 60gb (I play more PS2 games) or pm me and I will sell you mine after I finish RFOM2 I wont need it

ultimolu5639d ago (Edited 5639d ago )

You should have waited in line for the PS3 last year then instead of talking sh*t in the first place. Sony removed BC to lower the production costs of the PS3. Would you rather them lose even MORE money if they kept it?

You=FAIL

And don't you 360 fanboys have something to do? Like...waiting until your 360 lights up like a Christmas tree full of red? :)

REDZEV5639d ago

It should say, 80GB PlayStation 3 a Underdeveloped Movie console.

dukadork5639d ago

you make me laugh, just go buy a ps3, we'll pretend we haven't heard you spewing that jealous nonsense before you jumped out

lol

Raoh5640d ago

would you consider the arcade 360 @ $199 a fail?

with no hard drive it too has no backward compatibility and misses out on some online games that require caching. like online portion of burnout paradise.

xg-ei8ht5639d ago

NO BC = good. I didn't own a ps2 so why would i need it, i just bought an 80gb and just like mc.d's i'm loving it.

WANNA GET HIGH5639d ago

No bc is not a big deal.I bought my ps3 to play next gen games not last gen games...

kapedkrusader5639d ago

...you can still download all your music from your iPod without the need to install iTunes, which makes it perfect for getting free music from your friends:)

aaquib095639d ago

Not music you purchased from iTunes.

mikeslemonade5639d ago

You can also purchase high-definition Columbia Pictures movies and watch them at your own comfort on the PS3.

Karum5639d ago

I plugged my ipod touch into my PS3 earlier today and it wasn't recognised by the machine :(

Daurelus175639d ago

@ Karum
i had the same prob. with my i phone.

ape0075639d ago

4/5?

omg,what can I say?

the best, the most relieble game console, has blu-ray,full hd support, amazing free online support

has best games(god3 alone make it 20/10 console)

I mean come on

Tsalagi5639d ago

Highlight your i-pod in the XMB, press triangle, and select "Display all". Everything stored on the device you have plugged in will be accessible then.

Mhassan5639d ago

i agree with what you are saying but now i play majority of my old PS2 games on PS3 and they look surprisingly better to me. However i still don't get it that why people are still screaming about it. Clearly people who bought a PS3 had been playing PS2 before so what's the problem. Its the "Next generation" people. However i admire Sony for still supporting PS2 after the launch of PS3. I mean Microsoft literally choked Xbox when the 360 debuted. But then again a lot of my do complain about BC because they constantly have shift between Ps2 and PS3. Its a bit of a gripe but from business point of View its good for Sony to be as cost effective as possible. I mean nobody would buy a $600 game console especially in these days.

The Matrix5639d ago (Edited 5639d ago )

The PS3 really is a remarkable machine. The only doubts people have every had with it is the game selection. That's changing fast.

Lucreto5639d ago

I never had a problem with games. I have 20 games at the moment.

Milky Joe5639d ago

I think I actually have more games this gen than I did for the whole of last gen. And we're only 2 years in.

SaiyanFury5639d ago

Lord knows I have no complaints. I'm an original 60GB owner and while I could survive without the card readers I'm glad to have them anyways. As for the lack of bitstream support in the audio department: the PS3 does support bitstream output. Simply go into the Sound Options and set it. I've known that for a long time.

ThanatosDMC5639d ago

Yeah, i never used the card readers... EVER. But the 4 usb slots do help. One for my bluetooth headset, one for my dualshock3, one for my eyetoy, and one open one for whatever else like my 16gb flash drive from Microcenter which was $32.

But i do play Front Mission 4 from time to time.

Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell Of Ar Ciel Retro Review – Love Conquers All

Gary Green said: You’ll be forgiven if you haven’t heard of the Ar Tonelico trilogy. The previous two games arrived so late in the PS2’s life-cycle that they simply went unnoticed. While most were tinkering with their shiny new PS3s, Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia and Ar Tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica were being ‘returned to sender’ by your local Game stores. Luckily, you won’t need to have played them to understand and appreciate this third and final chapter, Qoga (pronounced k-yoga) tells the story of a racial war between humans and Reyvateils, a breed of biologically produced female cyborgs capable of reproduction, while still having a digital mind.

Oh my god. I kinda wish this would get a remaster on PS5, it would be awesome. One of my favorite games on PS3.

That and 3D Dot Game Heroes. It's a shame that some stuff is stuck on PS3.

Knightofelemia2d ago

Ar Tonelico 3 is good I still prefer the first AT game. The music is solid in all the games and Akiko Shikata is a very talented singer bringing life to the game. Only annoying part is well I find is Saki I always choose Finnel or Tyria. KOEI so needs to HD remaster the franchise along with Ar Nosurge and Ciel Nosurge since it never came to North America. I would day one the Ar Toneliceo games and Ar Nosurge if they were remastered.

TheColbertinator2d ago

I still have the limited edition of Qoga unopened. Unfortunately it never went up in value like I had hoped all these years.

Used to own all these quirky JRPG on ps3 good times. Wish I would have kept them all

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies3d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken3d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing694d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker4d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing694d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt3d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken3d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
