GamePro Preview: Heavy Rain: Best Graphics Ever

When describing a game like Heavy Rain, you've got to start with your most immediate impressions: the graphics. Heavy Rain's visuals look so phenomenal, so realistic, so lavish, that they probably qualify as the most impressive graphics ever produced for a video game. And the game hasn't been released yet! Even the title screen looks sensationally realistic. Upon loading the game, you're greeted with a close-up shot of a terrified (and unnamed) woman who glances nervously around the screen.

You can see the detail in every pore on her face, every gleam and twitch of her eyes, and every bead of sweat that trickles down her forehead. It looks truly magnificent, and it's all in real-time - no pre-rendered visual fakery here! Part of this magic lies in the details: the developers actually motion-capture eye movements for their virtual actors, lending an air of unnerving realism.

Silogon5728d ago

Not hard to accomplish when all you're doing is timed button presses. Dragon's Lair still looks good to this day and is arguably the best looking game ever. See how that works? Saying Heavy Rain is the best looking game ever is like saying Final Fantasy 7's cutscenes look better than 8's.

you've seen ONE MINUTE OF GAMEPLAY silogon!
you judge video games after seeing them in action for one minute? if yes, then your retarded, if no, then SHUT UP!

Silogon5728d ago (Edited 5728d ago )

Assumptions are flying in this thread.

Juuken, you're not fooling anyone. trying to wrangle a date for homecoming?

Other guy, Gears is the least of my concerns. I won't even buy Gears cause I didn't like the 1st, so your assumption falls flat.

Other guy below him - you have seen the same gameplay I have. Don't tell me how it plays out. you have seen timed button presses, same as me. We have not seen anything else, so you are wrong until proven otherwise right.

G'day and you al have been pwnd by Silogon the magnificent!

Edit to douche horn Jukken lover:

You don't have enough pull here to round up an army of ants, let alone other members. No one knows you. They don't value anything you have to say. I'm the draw here. ME! I'm the reason people come to n4g, wake up.
--
As for chicken, yes I d think games are getting more and more stale and more accesible for the casuals. It's all going too redefined now. Everything is being dumbed down for the lowest common denominator that "might" buy games. not saying they will, either. they just might and the industry is hedging their bets on the fact that they will. this is putting the hardcore gamer to the side.

JUUKENS HOT5728d ago (Edited 5728d ago )

im gona get all the n4g members to do a whip round so we can get you a prostitute,i think once your balls have dropped and you lose your virginity you wont be so bi-polar just make sure you inform us of the times your mum isnt home that could really be embarrasing for you!

IzKyD13315728d ago

"G'day and you al have been pwnd by Silogon the magnificent!"

uhhh yeah, heres the thing, we all missed that part, please tell us where exactly you "pwnd" us...oh wait, you cant :p, ya see? when your unwanted, here, it shows

Cajun Chicken5728d ago

I didn't like Gears either, do you feel as if 3/4 of the game industry has gone stale?

But I think you might be mis-judged with Heavy Rain, its insane to say; but I have a feeling its actually going to be more like playing Incredible Crisis with the QTE being spread evenly and perhaps as minigames.
Making a game where you just press buttons on screen no matter how good will not be a critical acclaim, but if what I said above, it may just be that breath of fresh air to bring in some new gameplay in...er...games.

Don Bluth does have an amazing animation style and probably made Dragons Lair the game it still stands up to be today.

I think we'll just have to see Heavy Rain as it develops and we get to see and experience it with our own eyes and hands.

cmrbe5728d ago

you must be the most hyper critical gamer i have ever come across but thats good.

MetalProxy5728d ago (Edited 5728d ago )

i totally agree, a little while ago, he would do anything for more bubbles, he would try to "connect" with PS3 owners, but now that everyone has shunned him, he starts acting the real silogon, the arrogant, idiotic fanboy

n8dogg865727d ago

Normally I'm a lot nicer and don't "name-call", but f*ck it.

"Not hard to accomplish when all you're doing is timed button presses."

You, sir, are a fuggin' moron. Any twat with half a brain could tell you (albeit very slowly, while drooling) that Dragon's Lair is not real-time. It's a series of short animated clips, in between and during which you occasionally press buttons. There's no polygons being rendered, there's algorithms being processed. It's a MOVIE, you nut-gobbler. That's why Don Bluth's name is on it. He's a movie director, assblaster, not a video game developer.

As for Heavy Rain, everything you see IS being processed in real-time, which means the hardware (PlayStation 3 in this case) is processing every polygon, every pixel, every bit of lighting going on in the game. This is what makes it the best looking game we've seen thus far (followed closely, in my opinion, by Killzone 2).

Oh, and Dragon's Lair looks like sh*t now compared to recent animated films. Dumbass.

Tacki5727d ago

He's just like Breakfast (though I think Breakfast is geniunely in love with his 360. I'm sure there are burns in unmentionable places) screaming for attention. It's better to just hit the disagree button and leave him alone. I've come to the conclusion that he flip flops so much because he either is entertained by those who respond, or believes he himself is the entertainment. Unlike some others... I don't believe he has any 'agenda' at all... other than to stir up as much as he can. Of course the more bubbles he has the easier it would be for him to do so. Which may be another reason it seems as though the spirits of every type of fanboy inhabit him at different times.

I'm not saying he has NO real opinions... but for the most part I think it's all an act.

This game has a lot of potenial.

We probably still haven't even seen the real game. I've read on sites saying that the Origami Killer is just a special scenerio created for demonstration. It's not part of the actual storyline.

They don't want to take any chances of giving away information on the real plot.

My favorite part is "there's no game overs" in Heavy Rain. That pretty interesting.

chaosatom3335728d ago (Edited 5728d ago )

Indigo prohecy was the same way, u are interacting and watching story at the same time.

U get to go places, u get to make choices of what to do next. It's all part of the gameplay.

kingOVsticks5728d ago

that was my favorite part to :)But i'm curious to see how death of certain characters tie into the main plot since the ending will always stay the same.

rosebowl235728d ago

the game is amazing and innovative indeed. quantic dream as developers and heavy rain as a game are at the top of my list

Genesis55728d ago

That looks really cool. I will most certainly be playing this game.

juuken5727d ago

This game just peeked my interest even further. I think I'm going to hunt down Indigo Prophecy and see what that's about first.

Sitdown5727d ago

I am not sure if you seen Mirrors....but from your description of the game.......it sounds like this game is the perfect marriage between the movie Mirrors and a game. I can not wait until games come out that make you feel like you are in a movie. Sort of like when you watch suspense movies and they draw you in to guessing how things fit together...to capture that and put that in game form with all the suspense and terror.

bpac1234567895727d ago

yah after reading the article and watching the trailer im alot more interested in the game than i was before. the graphics are definitively some of the best i have ever seen.

CRYSIS PWNED

rexor07175727d ago

I don't mind a non-reflex intensive game. Something original will be something nice. I just hope the story mechanics work out. Thats all I ask for. True next-gen replay value to me is more important than the same old gameplay mechanic other games cling to.

PS360PCROCKS5727d ago

comment# 1.9 I have been on this site for like three years now almost and that as the STUPIDEST remark i HAVE EVER seen!! "crysis pwned" not only is "pwned" idiotic in it's own right, to think this owns that game, oh please dream on buddy, not even close. this looks great but crysis owns everything right now by such a far margin not even PC rigs now can max it out.

bpac1234567895727d ago

calm down, how come when someone goes after crysis every pc gamer has to rush and defend it. Crysis is a good looking game, one of the best, but i like the style of heavy rain more and the graphics are more appealing to me. Crysis may look more "realistic" but that doesn't necessarily make it the better looking game.

on a side note: if my comment is the stupidest thing you've heard so far than theres no way you've been here 3 years. on my second day on this website someone asked the release date for halo 3 on the Wii. lol.

PiTCHBLaCK5727d ago

Crysis is a shooter isn't it?, Heavy rain
is a Adventure thriller with totally different
controls, both have Great graphics, you cant
downplay that.

PS360PCROCKS5727d ago

Im not a "PC gamer" i dont even have a graphics card in my computer other than the stock one it came with. I only played crysis at my friends house who is ridiculous and has a expensive setup. now about the wii thing that is pretty hilarious. Sorry I went off on you but it's like 90% of the PS fans think every game is the greatest looking game ever, and i'm like lol wtf? I'm sure they would hype Bioshock if it wasn't a 360 game as well. Anyways I never said this doesn't look really really good, but for sure tech, graphics etc tec etc Crysis owns everything by such a far margin, you cant downplay that.

I can't argue with that at all. The graphics that is.

TGSI

bluecapone5728d ago

Heavy rain will break new ground just watch

LightningPS35728d ago (Edited 5728d ago )

I say enough of that, that game looks like crap compared to Heavy Rain. Just the atmosphere and realism in that demo outdue anything from Indigo Prophecy.

There's no supernatural in Heavy Rain, and the main focus is on moral decisions.

Indigo Prophecy was full of supernatual nonsence, and your body is possed and you pull out Super fighting combos. I don't think Heavy Rain is going in that direction.

kazuma5728d ago

heavy rain won't have supernatural stuff, cage already said it.
i'm probably the only one that didn't find anything wrong with the supernatural stuff in indigo prophecy

XXXCouture5728d ago

Exactly. The ending and the whole supernatural-thing was a bit too much, i loved some of the mystery and suspense in the beginning though.

This looks way more intruding (sorry if i misspelled that), especially with that "no game over" and atmosphere. And it looks exactly the way i would have preferred Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit, so i'm looking really looking forward to this.

I'm gonna give ya a bubble, but promise to be nice my friend.

PiTCHBLaCK5727d ago

I Passed Indigo prophecy, Awesome game, the controls
were different and unique, Heavy rain will be awesome to!.

Please stop comparing video games to movies

"Many video games catch not only great commercial attention but remarkable critical attention as well. We have seen games like Heavy Rain, The Last of Us Part II, and even entries in the Metal Gear series described as fantastic interactive experiences, even heralded in the same way as Hollywood's greatest films.

I would suggest that not only is this an unfair comparison but also a harmful one. Video games, by their very nature, are an intricately different medium and should be weighed against one another rather than another form of media," Phillip writes for GF365.

Fist4achin1259d ago

Yes, please stop. They're better than most hollywood drivel nowadays.

BLAKHOODe1259d ago

I think Hollywood films will becoming increasingly more like video games in the future, especially as the world embraces the "new normal" from the pandemic. It makes sense, as games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales showcase just how realistically we're reaching in graphical capabilities, as well as showcase extreme action sequences in spectacular ways. And as time goes by, it'll get easier and cheaper to produce such "art", as well as create new star "actors" that never age, never die, never complain, never gets involved in scandals, etc. Technology is amazing and we're only just getting a taste of what it'll eventually be.

sourOG1259d ago

No. Some games are like movies.

medman1258d ago (Edited 1258d ago )

No. For the money spent, a quality game provides far more entertainment value than a quality movie. Especially when looking at what is going on in the world, and how a studio can attempt to pilfer from consumers by charging 30 dollars for Mulan via streaming. Ridiculous. There is no comparison....games all day.

Have you played Detroit? While it’s my personal favorite, I fully understand many preferring Heavy Rain more. I’m glad you enjoyed Heavy Rain too.

bouzebbal1416d ago

def. one of my top 3 best experiences on PS3

ClayRules20121416d ago

bouzebbal

That’s awesome to hear! What’re the other 2 best experiences?

akaFullMetal1416d ago

Great game, need to get started on Detroit soon.

ClayRules20121416d ago

Glad you enjoyed the game! Yes, Detroit is a masterpiece of a game, and their best work to date “in my opinion”

ClayRules20121416d ago

Wow, 10 years...and yet, still one of the best/most emotional/thrilling gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

So grateful to Sony for believing in Quantic Dream’s vision for this game, and giving them a chance. I’ll never forget David Cage saying “We want to challenge the player, but not with the controller, but mentally, with their decisions of “How far would you go to save someone you love” Well, they broke my emotional gamer heart lol.

My teenage son refuses to play this game, because I’ve told him in little detail the emotional impact it had on me all those years ago. Maybe one day he will.

Z5011416d ago

Still have my origami crane they teach you how to make when you're installing for the first time.

C-H-E-F1416d ago

it's been 10 years? wow, that was so fast, I feel like this console gen went fast as well although it hasn't. I really look forward to the PS5 this holiday season though.
