New GTA 4 Multiplayer Preview in OXM, reason for delay revealed

OXM confirm that modes use the entire map and this is the reason why GTA IV was delayed was working on the networking code and multiplayer components.

- In all multiplayer modes entire Liberty City is available (Host sets what area people respawn at this is the main battle area but you can go anywhere)

- Your online person can be male or female

- Money you get determines you rank online

-Get money by killing people

-Host can set how chatworks (everyone hears you, only teams can hear eachother, or proximity chat)

-In race mode anything goes (you can use helicopters, boats, or even run across finish as long as your first you win)

-Shooting and driving is fairly difficult (as it should be)

- Hangmans NOOSE is 4 players and starts at airport where you must take Kenny Petrovic to safe zone in city while persude by the NOOSE team (National Organization of Security Enforcement)

-You can skip rockets across the ground if aimed correctly

- Free roam is just that no rules, no cash, host decides weapons

-OXM believed that free roam will be GTA IV's app and said it was incredible fun and will last for years and years they believe

Jeronimo Barrera, a senior developer at Rockstar, says it takes testers playing 4 hours a day "a good 2 weeks to get through the whole single-player game."

Rockstar's Steve Hahnel says the ambition of GTA IV is the reason the game was delayed. Multiplayer was one of the main things responsible for the delay. Gameplay needed to be balanced, and "an authentic Liberty City had to be created for 16 players to explore and destroy simultaneously."

In multiplayer, as stated previously, the host gets to decide on a number of options such as weather, vehicle types, spawn location, etc. The host also gets to decide if auto-aim can be used.

Health, armour and cash pickups are available during multiplayer. The cash determines your online rank - from 0 to 10. Kill people and steal their money to boost your online credibility.

You can wander anywhere during multiplayer, but if you die you will respawn in the area that the host has set.

You can't play as Niko during multiplayer, but you can create your own character (male or female) using different clothing.

It's going to be the best game in the last 5 years.

criticalzero5877d ago

Very true....GTA4's gonna kick some serious ass....

therealwillie5877d ago

who's up for skipping rockets across the gta4 map then.... first to five wins :)

niall775877d ago

but yeah rockstar.. PLESE have custom soundtracks in the ps3 version

if you put them in the psp games it cant be that hard to do it with a ps3

Exhaust5877d ago (Edited 5877d ago )

One of my favorite things about the PSP GTA games was the custom sound tracks.

Even if it doesn't have custom sound tracks on PS3 its got TONS of great music in the game to listen to.

This game is going to be awesome on both systems. Blockbuster sales.

Jack Meahoffer5877d ago (Edited 5877d ago )

Same with in game voice chat... Its an OS footprint RAM issue. Currently the PS3 can't handle custom sound tracks. Until Sony patches the PS3 it won't be having real custom sound tracks.

Rockstar released an additional application for PSP to code songs for playback in the game. Those songs couldn't be played outside of the game so it just left a dead spot on your memory stick. Its doubtful they would do that for PS3 when it should have the feature built in from day one.

Guess thats what happens when shoehorning Bluray in is more important than creating a OS with a small footprint.

Custom sounds are just another reason why the 360 version will be the best version. They've only showed the PS3 version a couple times compared to the tons of time they showed the 360 version... Has to be a reason for that... Its the best version.

WARM COLORS! YAY I'd rather have better framerate, exclusive DLC, in game chat and custom sound tracks.

Variable5877d ago

r* already said that the framerate is the same on both systems, so you're talking nonsense here...

Engineer5877d ago

You play the psp versions? The files were indeed a proprietary format, in such that they were .mp3 files that you had to change the .mp3 on to .gta (or somewhat similar but it was a common encode).

This can be done by Rockstar or by Sony, though I'm thinking the in game soundtrack (usually pretty great) will tide me over until Sony releases their in-game XMB. It is supposed to be a month or two after this game comes out no?

Man, this game is so full of win I'm afraid it's going to burst at the seams!

power of Green 5877d ago (Edited 5877d ago )

Thats not what they said when they first responded. MP was only said to be part of the reason. Its PR man They said they were going to delay the PS3 version right before they delayed the game intirely due to problems and the PS3 version being behind.

power of Green 5877d ago (Edited 5877d ago )

Don't make me post statements with time lines.

I'll do you a favor by letting this be the new truth by not posting links if only you stop dissagreeing.

Part one: PS3 version being being behind

"Once again, our demo takes place on the Xbox 360 version of the game - in fact, nobody has seen anything of the PS3 version to date, outside of Rockstar and Take 2. We actually expected to see the PS3 version this time. "It's still a week or two behind," Rockstar told us,"
http://games.kikizo.com/new...

Part Two: RockStar reveals the game is delayed

"With Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar is setting a new standard for next generation video games," stated Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of Take-Two. "Certain elements of development proved to be more time-intensive than expected, especially given the commitment for a simultaneous release on two very different platforms. We all recognize that perfecting the game is vital and I can assure everyone it will be worth the wait. We owe it to the game's millions of fans, to our dedicated development team, and to our shareholders to make sure that Grand Theft Auto IV is a groundbreaking gaming experience that takes maximum advantage of next generation technology."

Part Three: RockStar reveals PS3 was a major factor in the delay.

"It's really no surprise to anybody that the PS3 was definitely a contributing factor to [the delay]," Rockstar's Jeronimo Barrera tells MTV. No surprise indeed.

"The finger pointing began last August when Take-Two cited "technical challenges" as the reason for the considerable delay, which was quickly interpreted to mean: Sony's big, black box. But Take-Two and Rockstar have stuck to the "it's not 'helpful or beneficial' to go into specifics" excuse, until now. Rockstar is openly chatting about the delay because the challenges are "not an issue anymore"
http://www.joystiq.com/2008...

All you had to do was not dissagree now everybody looking at this will know what was said in this news post was nothing more than PR or half truths.

Varsarus5877d ago

ofc they had trouble with the ps3, as it's their first experience working with it, and they have much experience with the 360 as they released a few games for it already.

power of Green 5877d ago

Good points!, if you read what I was saying your response is besides the point. The point was to challange the PS3 fanboy in the gamerzone for his fictional fud.

Jack Meahoffer5877d ago (Edited 5877d ago )

No matter how many ghost disagreers press that disagree button its true. Not only did slow confusing PS3 development cause the delay but also the slow sales the first year. If Rockstar would have released last October as planned there would have been far less PS3's out there.

Rockstar knows GTA IV will sell tons and they wanted to maximize the bang by having as many systems out there as possible.

I wouldn't be supprised if the 360 version has been completed for months getting more and more polish while the PS3 version struggles to run without framerate dips.

We all know GTA IV won't work online for PS3 owners on day one. You saw the prediction here. Mark my words. Just like COD4 and R6V2 they'll have to patch it before you'll be able to play online on PS3.

Damn your pretty famous MART. Every Sony fanboy on this site knows your name and says every 360 fan is you. lol

Fat Bastard5877d ago

POG, you're the most retarded and ignorant noob cunt on this site. Rockstar said MONTHS ago that it was a 1 or 2 WEEKS behind. Then you claim that they said the PS3 was a major factor, when in reality they said it was a CONTRIBUTING factor. Artard. And now, they give you proof that the delay was because of multiplayer modes, and you think they're lying. How would you know? You don't, you just post the most ridiculous bs that comes into your head to infuriate people. Go jizz on your sister you poon

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies2d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken2d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing693d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker3d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing693d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt2d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken2d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
