Remedy Uses Bizarre Excuse for Not Bringing Alan Wake to PC Players

InfoAddict: If you're a hardcore PC gamer then you are used to hearing excuses as to why certain games only appear on consoles. Usually, these reasons take the form of "limited funding", "not enough time", or the ever-popular "PC games don't sell like the console counterparts." All valid excuses. So when Remedy, the creators behind the flashlight simulator Alan Wake, made it clear their game wouldn't be coming to PC rigs, their excuse struck me as downright bizarre.

Remedy's reasoning lacks any semblance of logic. It just comes across as an utterly strange thing to say. Honesty would have worked just fine here, something like "Piracy is an issue on the PC."

Real mature. It's understandable that this "hardcore" PC gamer (as he refers to himself) is upset at Remedy's and/or Microsoft's decision to release the game only on 360, but the last sentence really shows off his childishness. He even tries to make himself feel better, right there for the whole world to read, by assuming the game is going to suck. Isn't it funny when people openly express their immature emotional issues to the public? Why not just keep your feelings to yourself? Or else just get an Xbox 360. See, when Microsoft said that Halo 3 was going to be only on Xbox 360, I got mad at Microsoft for like a minute and then decided that I would get an Xbox 360 to play it. It's business, it's consumerism, and it's the way of this world. Stop complaining about it.

Tiberium5189d ago

Remedy can't do a damn thing. Microsoft owns the IP. What Microsoft says goes with Alan wake.

rroded5189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

“Some games are more suited for the intimacy of the PC, and others are best played from the couch in front of a larger TV screen,” states Microsoft. “We ultimately realised that the most compelling way to experience Alan Wake was on the Xbox 360 platform, so we focused on making it an Xbox 360 exclusive. Both Microsoft and Remedy have long histories in PC game development. This decision was about matching this specific game to the right platform.”

edit at below id respect that more than the bs they are trying ta give us.

van-essa5189d ago

Well, it's better than saying "if you want to play this game, get an X360 you phuckers"!

They're just trying to be nice.

leila015189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

People, just buy an Xbox and stop whining. Thx

militant075189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

Microsoft doesnt own the Alan Wake IP, they only own the right for the first Alan Wake.

sack_boi5189d ago

If you can afford a high-end PC, then you can afford an X360.

Cold 20005189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

Not coming to PC.

Time for people to move on.

APB was supposed to come to the 360. Now it's a PC only game. Why didnt we see a whole bunch of cry babies coming out to complain ?

PC gamers must really have nothing to play if just ONE game being canceled is making them react like this.

And to be completely honest it almost makes me feel sorry for PC gaming.

Letros5189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

I guess my Xbox will finally be undusted for 1 title this year, was wondering the other day why I had one.

Too many games on PC to play, seem to have a new one every week with steam deals.

sack_boi5189d ago

"was wondering the other day why I bought one."
For Alan Wake it seems.

green5189d ago

You hit the nail on the head.

kneon5189d ago

Microsoft doesn't have enough real exclusives for the XBox, too many are available on PC. They likely just decided that they needed to make it a true exclusive in the hopes that it would sell consoles. Even if it doesn't sell a lot of consoles there is still some marketing advantage to having more exclusives. Microsoft doesn't make anything off the PC version so why should they care. The number of gaming PCs sold every year is a rounding error compared to overall sales of PCs so they really have nothing to lose by doing this.

toaster5189d ago

@ Letros

I feel you man. I haven't played my Xbox since the Halo3 days. And after that got old I just played Castle Crashers (excellent game BTW if anyone hasn't played it yet). Alan Wake will be the next disk that enters my 360. Also Halo: Reach. Other than those 2 I really have no interest many other 360 games.

Insomnia_845189d ago

"People, just buy an Xbox and stop whining. Thx"

That's exactly what M$ wants PC players to do, that's why they keep screwing them up and I f@k!ng hate that!! M$ will bring death to PC gaming.

Next time someone asks who brought death to PC gaming you know the answer.

Active Reload5189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

Thats one thing I never see 360 users doing and thats crying over not getting a particular game or losing a particular game. Someone needs to remind me again of whose the real mature gamers because I'm confused.

Active Reload5189d ago

So let me get this straight. MS is killing pc gaming for making this one game exclusive? Hmmm, I would think it was piracy more so than this occurrence, but whatever you say.

crck5189d ago

Remedy owns the Alan Wake IP. Look at all the idiots giving disagrees to the people that are stating a fact.

Taken from the bottom of the Alan Wake page at xbox.com

"Alan Wake and Remedy are either registered trademarks or trademarks of Remedy Entertainment Ltd."

leila015189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

I should write an article about how Age of Conan and APB were suppose to come to the X360.

@PrimordialSoupBase

You'd only be depriving yourself from a great experience, it's your call.
How did L4D2 and MW2 boycott go btw?

PrimordialSoupBase5189d ago

@Cold 2000 No, APB is not a PC exclusive. There are still plans to port it should it prove to be a success.

@leila01 I own a 360 and because of this absolute nonsense I won't have anything to do with the game.

Rageanitus5189d ago

very true, but some ppl prefer the power of the pc vs consoles.... so it comes down to opportunity cost...

Why spend on a console when you can put that money into more computer gear.

Ninji5189d ago

I remember when the same thing was said about the GTA4 DLC and many other games. I'm sure it will eventually be on PC with extras (and even PS3 for that matter).

Active Reload5189d ago

Ninji, are you high? Never mind, don't answer that, because there is a thing called denial on N4G...and its thick.

TheLog5189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

There is a big difference in immersion between playing games at an average size pc then playing it at a huge hd tv. Its like between watching a tv at home and going to the movies. Of course some fanboys will be blinded by this.

JasonPC360PS3Wii5189d ago

The guy who wrote this needs a tissue http://www.kleenex.com He says he owns a 360 so what s he crying for?

insomnium5189d ago

That is one piece of electronics I'll never touch again. MS has made the x360 such a turn off in so many ways I might not buy a single console from them ever again.

At least as long as that fat face is in a position to gain something out of my purchase I will not support any xboxes again. Waaaaay too childish for my tastes.

PrimordialSoupBase5189d ago

@leila01 A lot more like their loss of a prospective customer. If it turns out to be good, I'll happily pirate it. If this was never announced for PC there would never have been any problem.

kneon5189d ago

I do. All my gaming is on the same HDTV. Unless the kids are hogging the main TV and then I have to go downstairs on the smaller TV with only a PS3 connected.

IdleLeeSiuLung5189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

I do, and that is why I prefer the console. It is a very different experience than playing games on the PC, where you use the keyboard and mouse seated in a very upright position.

I don't know about you guys, but watching a movie on my TV is very different than doing it on my PC. Sure both can do the same, but the setting is very different. What about the Movie Theater?

In a game, it becomes even more apparent because of the controller input.

I guess, people wouldn't complain (or be the wiser) if MS/Remedy said there isn't enough resources or funding, but give them an honest answer and they criticize you. What is that for a logic?

Saaking5189d ago

People, it's not the fact that it's 360 exclusive that's pissing people off, it's the fact that the original tech demo which got everyone hyped up was the PC version. THAT was the version was so graphically amazing, not the 360 version. People know that somewhere inside Remedy, there's a PC version that's leaps and bounds above the 360 version and thanks to MS we'll never see it. They've gimped yet ANOTHER game!

SilentNegotiator5189d ago

That is one LAME excuse.

BTW, you can EASILY play PC games on a TV, with a gamepad, on a couch. So don't give us that crap, Microsoft, we know.

menoyou5188d ago

This coul have been a great game with great graphics but no, they got some Microsoft Moneys and now the game won't live up to its full potential.

InfectedDK5188d ago

They thought "Well what's the reasons for getting a 360?" and then they came up with this 360 paid exlusive.. So that there are atleast some games you can only play on the 360 and not on PC too.. It's that simple.

FarEastOrient5188d ago

What is wrong with getting close to my PC gaming? I'm enjoying Mass Effect 2 on PC, yet than again one of my screens is 42" so a little bit smaller than my TV.

Moragami5188d ago

1.22 - THIS IS A VALID POINT. OH COME ON, HOW MANY PEOPLE YOU KNOW ACTUALLY HOOKS THEIR PC UP WITH A HUGE HD TV AT THEIR LIVING ROOM TO PLAY GAMES???

I do. It's awesome to play with x360 controller or wireless keyboard / mouse. But when the wife wants to watch a show, I can switch over to my monitor in the office and play at super high resolution. It's a win, win, win for me.

JokesOnYou5188d ago (Edited 5188d ago )

"That's exactly what M$ wants PC players to do, that's why they keep screwing them up and I f@k!ng hate that!! M$ will bring death to PC gaming." -Insomnia_84

-Why is it micro's sole responsibility to keep PC gaming alive? They provide the Windows platform which last time I checked makes them one of the VERY FEW WHO SUPPORTS PC GAMING, or isn't it enough that micro actually is one of the few companies, software or hardware who really does support PC gaming? Either way theres a BIG DIFFERENCE between supporting PC gaming VS being obligated to carry PC gaming along forever. They make money off PC sales, PC gaming benefits from their OS and gaming support= Thats the deal but micro is still allowed to make internal business decisions that is ultimately in the best interest of their company as a whole= choosing which games they want or don't want on PC to still give the 360 enough appeal for some potential PC/360 gamers. If that hurts PC gaming a bit then so be it, micro doesn't own the PC platform, remember? Of course it almost seems that way, but that's more so by default(Windows Games) either way PC gaming will hardly fail because of micro's dual strategy, just like the 360 hasn't been significantly affected by 360/PC games= ME2 is just the latest example of a 360/PC game still selling better than competitors "true exclusives". This is not charity organization, go yell at Sony, Nintendo, Apple, Sega, Disney, Samsung, Dell or whoever and ask all these powerful software/hardware companies to "jump in" and offer a alternative/more choices and support pc gaming too.

@ Baka-akaB....OK, so it was originally announced for PC and 360, I could understand some normal resentment from PC gamers being dissapointed but its been known for quite some time that PC version was cancelled, and anybody who follows gaming knows games get cancelled, it happens but theres not much you can do about it. Again micro/Remedy have decided not to do a PC version(for now) nothing wrong with that, if so charge all the dev's guilty who made games this gen and DIDN'T EVEN CONSIDER MAKING A PC VERSION. At least Remedy/micro are open to the possibility of future PC games, while other companies and dev's just focus on one market and basicly haven't bothered supporting PC gaming....if I were still a PC gamer I'd be much more concerned that there are many devs/companies that COULD CARE LESS ABOUT PC GAMING YET THEY ARE GAME DEVELOPERS/PUBLISHERS.=

So what's their excuse?

JOY

Tony P5188d ago

Wow. They gotta have some brass ones to spew that tripe with a straight face.

Christopher5188d ago

Microsoft is doing for the same reason you don't see PS3 exclusives on the PC: because it increases sales of the console platform. Microsoft makes money off each disc sold, more so than what they make for PC releases. Even better is that typically console games are $10 more expensive than PC games because of royalty fees, but both Sony and Microsoft don't take $10 off the price of a game and essentially pay themself royalty fees, which means the consumer is paying an unnecessary extra amount just to play it on a console.

On the other hand, this is why an exclusive that only sells half a million can be easily set up for a sequel or two: they're making double the amount of money on each sale since they pay themselves the cost of royalty fees.

What's all the fuss? If you want to play it, buy a Xbox 360.

... Just as if you want to play a PS3 exclusive, buy a PS3. I don't see Sony releasing their games on the PC, and nobody is complaining about that.

It's understandable what Remedy/Microsoft are doing. I'm still surprised Mass Effect 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction got the same release date for the X360 and PC versions. A few months back i thought the PC version of those games were going to be released months after the X360 version, like Assassins Creed 1, Assassins Creed 2, Dirt 2 and Mass Effect 1.

Do like me, get a X360, PS3 and decent PC.
If you can't afford it, get a job like me :)

Simple as that.

Charmers5189d ago

Why should I buy a bicycle when I already own a Ferrari ? If a company doesn't want to release their products on to the platform I want to play the game on then they aren't seeing my money.

I think most of the anger here is the lack of support from Microsoft. You say "if you want to play PS3 exclusives then buy a PS3" what you neglect to take into account is that Microsoft are supposedly meant to promote and encourage PC gaming. After all they are in the PC Gamers Alliance and they have GFWL on the PC platform.

It is a pretty damning indictment of Microsoft when you think that Sony are now doing more on the PC this year gaming wise than Microsoft is.

rroded5189d ago

seriously tho its not the exclusivity that bothers me its the bs excuses that leave a bad taste...

better not saying anything than feeding us this bull

toaster5189d ago

@ lelo2play

I partially agree. I guess I can call myself a "hardcore" PC gamer as I have been playing since the early stages of PC gaming. But I also own a console. My XBox 360 will have the pleasure of playing this game. I'm not going to hate it just because it's not on the system of my choice. Although sometimes things like exclusivity changes anger me.

Say if the next Warcraft game was announced for PC and they hype it for years and years and say it's the best PC RTS that will ever exist in the history of ever, and then all of a sudden they turn on a dime and say it will be coming to consoles, I would be pretty pissed.

There were PC gamers looking forward to this game for the PC and I think that what MS did was just limit this game to a single audience. It would have sold more if it was multiplat, though I normally don't play many multiplats.

AKS5189d ago

I have a 360. I wanted to play the version that was supposed to take full advantage of the quad core CPU I have in my PC and see this game look the best it possibly could. The "explanation" we're being given is completely bogus. Intimacy of the PC? I play my PC on a 50" Panasonic plasma just as I do my 360 and PS3.

Baka-akaB5189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

You dont get it , the game was always announced on PC . So it aint so kind of jealousy crap going on .

Now they obviously erase the pc version , so the whole" 360 exclusive arent exclusive they are on pc too" stuff dies .
Notice how they no longer port gears of war and fable anymore ? Hardly a matter of piracy , with still bucks being made on digital and retail versions on pc , and with the 360 quite heavily pirated anyway .

I wasnt planning to get a pc version mind you , but that's still a crappy and low blow .
Remedy is/was a pc dev foremost , and Alan wake started was always a pc game too

Most feeds and pics even came from the pc version . So what do the game actually looks like now ? i'm sure it's still gorgeous but hardly in the same ballpark now .

They had years to stop wasting eager pc players time , so of course it's not cool to raise their expectation then shoot them down right before release .

insomnium5189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

Baka-akaB you are correct. The thing I find ridiculous is that why don't everyone understand this. The sole reason for all the hate here is that AW was SUPPOSED to come to PC for a looong time. Only just recently they canned it.

Do you x360 fans forget this piece of information on purpose just so you can come here and shout "jealous whiner buy a x360"? Giga facepalm and mega lol. You guys are so easy. You are all just children aren't you?

Nikuma5188d ago (Edited 5188d ago )

I hate it when people constantly say "If you wanna play the game then just buy a 360!!" Sorry but I'm not sinking money into a loud, badly built machine which overpriced accessories just to play one game. Not gonna happen.

I was looking forward to playing Alan Wake on PC when it lowered in price, but honestly I never saw what the huge fuss about this game was so I don't feel I'm missing much.

Bigpappy5188d ago

hmm his last comment kind of killed the entire article anything he was trying to convey. I really wanted to play this game on my pc since I enjoyed both max payne and max payne 2 on my pc, but I do have a 360 so it's really no hair off my back. And like lelo said if you really want to experience everything gaming has to offer get all platforms or at least get access to all platforms.

Dance5189d ago

People want Alan Wake so bad then buy a 360

XXXCouture5189d ago

thats not the point. this is microsoft not even supporting there own platform. just so they can get more people to buy a 360 and then live fees and so on

mrv3215189d ago

There's many PC players without a 360. We both know it's ENTIRELY possiple for this to come out for the PC 1 year later. Regardless of what they say. It's a smart tactic.

Sell the game as a 360 exclusive and get hype from it
12 months later release it on steam and get PC owners who in my opinion could not possiple care less about the format wars.

EpsilonTeam5189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

There's no excuse. Alan Wake belongs to Microsoft. And Microsoft prefers to push their Xbox brand instead of PC. So, Remedy make excuses for MS. Simple. We might see Alan Wake for the PC sometime in the future though.

On a serious note, that is why I try activating gift cards asap. It's happened to me where the store didnt scan it right where the card was unusuable. Happened at Wally World.

I just bought two of the MonsterVerse Godzilla movies on 4K - both had digital copies expiring in 2023. Both were actually expired.

I'd be surprised but it's WB, of course they'd actually expire them

Knightofelemia13d ago

Usually most of those redemption card have an expiry date on them. If they expired all buyer did was buy recycled paper. And some of those codes are country locked to certain countries. I buy a card from the States I can't use it in Canada.

Dumb and silly story. She wasted her money for no reason.

Is it really that hard to go to Steam or GOG. She spent $240, when its currently 70% off on GOG, and only costs $4.49.

Gee, I wonder, should I spend $240 on eBay, or $4.49 on GOG? 🙄

Most likely she wanted to resell a few or most of them. However, it was a too good to be true situation.

Nevertheless, it has resulted in a lot of upset, illustrating just how much the thermos means to Alan Wake fans.
