US may be the biggest market but if one country prefers XB while 100 countries prefer PS3 (not an accurate number) eventually the tide will turn and the numbers will swing. I think it wont be long before PS3 overtakes the UK and then Sony will be dominating all of Europe, Japan and others. The gap in NA is already closing. Watch it close more.

The PS3 has only been sale in America and Japan for 1 year. Europe is still 3 months off from reaching its 1 year anniversary. The difference in sales figures for 1 year global are only going to increase. So anyone saying now that the PS3 isn't selling well compared to the xbox 360's first year are clearly delusional.

Interesting graph.

Notice the spike in sales for XB when Gears came out but then leveled off pretty quickly. PS3 spiked at the same time in its lifetime but seems like its only just gathering momentum now. Sony needs a couple big titles or even just a LBP demo in the first quarter to keep that momentum going up.

Also, like you said XB had NO COMPETITION. Bots act like thats not a big deal when in fact its there biggest advantage even though they had a price, software and generally less bad media. All these advantages and PS3 has kept pace. C'mon Bot, give credit where its due, thats a great achievement by Sony. Xbox should have sold 15 Million its first year with all it had going for it and if we'd listened to you PS3 was dead within 6 months. Well neither happened and I'm so looking forward to '08. Should be the best year yet for everyone.

these are indeed good sales for the ps3, but anzway i don,t trust very much VG charts, they are very inaccurate, but i do believe that the ps3 outsold the 360, this is the actual trend, more people start to realize the power and potential of the ps3 and also the games are already here with a soon releasing of the biggest franchises of gaming that everyone is waiting. I,m from Europe,Italy and i was one of the last one to buy in November the 60GB ps3 with the 2 controllers and 2 games (Motorstorm and Resistance) for only 499, it was a real deal, and i also wanted the retro compatibility because i,m still playing many ps2 games like God of War II and FF XII. And i am now really enjoing my ps3 because i like all the stuff it can do, i can watch movies, divx from my 500gb HD where all my movies and anime shows are, also i can listen the music, see photo (i love the way it can visualize them) watch blu ray with my new shining hd tv and can surf the net also, all this stuff and not only with one wonderful machine...but the main reason that made me buy it was the games despite many of the xbox fans here are saying. i know that this 2008 year games that i love will came like DMC 4 (i own the entire saga on ps2) MGS 4 (still have to play the previous one but i really like the story despite stealth is not my genre) FF XIII (love the saga, played every chapter from the 7 to 12) also i put great hopes in little big planet and white night story ( i like rpgs). From my point of view next year will be a wonderful year for ps3 and we already see the trend of it gaining more and more sales, but this don,t mean doom and groom for the 360, i personally would like to play Ninja Gaiden 2 and Lost Odissey (i like also action titles like DMC and especially GOW) but i think that the biggest games of the 360 are already there, and the next year they will finally have the real competition whith games and franchises that the 360 can,t match for now.

I can't really agree to the "non-biased" US. That's the reason the 360 sells so well here. It's "your box". And also the reason for the bad press. Same maybe in Japan, Nintendo and Sony are "their brands". Europe can be neutral. They don't own any one. So, fair ground, I'd say.

I'm not saying that's the main reason, but it contributes to the small lead each machine has, IMO. And, totally understandable. If there would be an European made machine, I am pretty sure, this would have an advantage in its home market as well.

BTW: The largest PS3 install base now is in Europe, not the US. (actually, not entirely correct. Its "other" which includes other PAL territories as well, EU is bit behind - probably 1 month or so, but with a 5 month short LTD). Other: 3.7M, US: 3.5M, Eu: 3.2M.

Who didn't expect this? I congratulate Kaz and crew for making the decision to drastically lower the cost of a PS3 and introducing the 40 GB model. The negative press of no PS2 software compatability is no longer the topic of interest. Focus is quite simple in 08. Continue to cut costs of the PS3. I'd imagine seeing the costs further reduced to 349.99 for the 40 GB model and 449.99 for the 80 GB model. I just can't see another 100.00 price cut unless MS cuts the price by 100.00.

Software was the focus of the TGS 2007 show (Kaz gave the presentation). Again, software is a focus at E3 2007 and going into the GDC 2008. Metal Gear Solid 4, although not mainstream will attract the hardcore gamers. LittleBigPlanet has a casual feel and if marketed well, I think will be huge commercial success. Killzone 2 is the epitome of hardcore software and is Sony's big budget Halo. It might not sell has much as Halo 3 but it will leave a nice dent. Of course it all depends on the marketing. Heck, I'd be showing teaser trailers now on TV if I were Sony.

It's a Playstation 3... PS2 went through the SAME EXACT little bad period period where developers had to figure out the hardware, were people just criticzed it for the sake of criticizing it... and the Price sucked but that is already fixed and over. its clearly all(most/majority) of the sonykids who hated vg chartz, ironicly even some of the same ones on this very news post who used to be so critical of vg chartz, some even said "why do people post vg chartz as news on n4g?" ha ha but I bet you can't find a post from me hating on vg chartz, I just say what I've always said even when they are good 360 #'s, I said vg chartz is not 100% accurate but they do give a general idea about who came out on top, only occasionaly have they been totaly wrong, same for this news, so with this difference of 187k worldwide for the month of Dec. it remains to be seen how accurate it is simply because last month when after the NPD #'s for America/November were released on Dec 13th it showed 360 had actually outsold the ps3 worldwide slightly in Nov, so we'll see if the same happens again, but either way lets say vg is accurate this month and ps3 did win by 187k, at that rate you're looking at a few yrs before ps3 catches up, I'm not sure the exact number and I dont feel like finding it again but I think ps3 needs to outdo the 360 sales by about 650k a month to catch up by 2009, hmmm, so I think micro looks fine even without dropping the price again like sony.

First of all PS3 has not come to a full year worldwide. In Europe it was launched late march and it's one of Sony's strongholds. So if you abandon your simplistic math and think logically for a minute or two, you'll discover that PS3 sold a lot more than x360 in it's (not complete) first year WITH competition and NO games. 2mil consoles this december 200k consoles more than x360. Next year it's going to be something close to 4mil to 1.5mil. When MGS4 comes out it will sell 1.5-2 mil consoles in a month in japan only. If you have any doubts just see what final fantasy did for psp in just only a week (700k consoles). The problem with your logic is that you keep thinking that PS3 will continue to sell at this rate. Definitely no, it will sell much much more due to the games coming out. These figures, even if they are a bit inaccurate, are pretty interesting.

Forgetting the fanboy wars for a moment... Lets say VGChartz got it wrong (again) and the 360 actually outsold the PS3 by 180k or whatever... that's still a hugely impressive performance by the PS3!

It was generally accepted (by most non-biased gamers) that the 360 had a phenomenal line-up for this holiday period which blew the Ps3 out of the water. So if these figures are accurate and the PS3 has indeed outsold the 360, Sony should be very happy and MS can only scratch it's head and wonder what it needs to do to remain on top.

It will be interesting to see if Nintendo can maintain their forward momentum. I've actually been disappointed by Nintendo for the first time ever. The Wii just lacks good games, and while I'm glad Nintendo have climbed back to the top, I can't help but hope that MS or Sony manage to give them a good kick up the backside. - At the moment Ninty may as well be selling empty boxes, as my Wii has been gathering dust for months.

I'm also intruiged by what has caused the PS3 to sell so well. Is it only the Sony/PlayStation brand strength and the price cut? It appears that both Ratchet and Uncharted sold poorly, as did UT3, and most multiformat titles looked/ran better on 360 - so what was driving the sales?

Maybe the 360 peaked too early (with Halo 3 out last Sept and BioShock getting an early release); or maybe 360 sales have hit the wall. Has the RRoD issues finally started to really bite MS I wonder. Perhaps if that is the case then the PS3 figures aren't that great, but the 360 should have been higher but failed beacuse of the reasons I mentioned... After all, the PS3 only sold half the units compared to the Wii.

Why is the PS3 selling better than the 360 even when the 360 has the better lineup? I think its simply brand recognition. People trust the PS brand to deliver. The xbox isnt seen as favorably as the PS brand is by anyone outside the US. People really consider the PS3 as an investment in the next 6 years and they are correct in considering it an investment.

I think the 360 came out too early. I dont think the public was or is ready quite yet for this generation of consoles (excluding the Wii). I really think this is obvious when we consider how many people have bought a ps2 over the last 7 years. Look at the sales, they dont lie. This is one of the reasons I think we will see an new xbox in 09 or 10

It might well be the reputation for quality and the over all package, as well. The RRoD can't really be an argument for (!) the 360, while all these "Ultimate" rumors point to the demand for HD video and WiFi. Both, which the PS3 already covers. I think people realize those strong arguments for the PS3, even at a slightly higher cost and with a smaller game library - which is not significant for new comers, because there is a critical mass of games out, which can keep you busy for months. Especially if you have to catch up on the last years titles.

Sales of the X360 have gone from first place to last in 1 year (and only 9 months outside of Japan & N.A.). The X360 is being outsold by both the PS3 and the PS2 (the PSP also, but that's piling on). The X360 still has a long way to go even to sell as many systems as the Xbox1 did.

I'm not saying these facts are good or bad. It's just interesting to see where all of the chips are actually falling, in spite of what has seemed at times to be pretty desperate attempts by many people to paint an alternate reality.

Or atleast as well as the PS3. It was an illusion, it was only doing as well as the PS3 because the PS3 was overpriced with little games. It now has games and is better priced and you can see the results.

As soon as Sony gets the lead in America it will keep it for the duration of the war. Its now within 40,000. By the end of Feb it will take the lead. All of Microsofts hype is in the past.

On the bright side for them, the 360 potentially could have sold LESS than the original, by being less advanced and equally expensive. On top of that, Sony was the name tied with gaming. Vgchartz seems to present weekly data, as opposed to monthly. This is likely the reason you're not seeing an 'entire' month. You probably wouldn't find many people who would agree that they're big Sony fans.

And you may be right regarding the imminent "beating" of the PS3. But draw some lines on a graph, and they sure don't seem to be going in that direction. Nor does anything else seem to support this conclusion. Talk is cheap, and as the last year has shown, anybody can post their crystal ball predictions of what's "going to happen". But this amounts to absolutely zero.

PS3 was very expensive and its owners had to wait for many of the good games already out. Next year will be a lot better, given price drops and even better games.

Microsoft on the other hand should be worried. Halo 3 is already out, but even with that and all of its *supposedly* wonderful exclusives (notice the emphasis on the word supposedly) they didn't give the final blow to Sony's PS3. Next year it's a guarantee that PS3 will sell significantly better, especially in Japan. Microsoft is dead in Japan, and next year PS3 will surpass it in Europe (you can't deny that, at least it's unlikely that Microsoft will somehow pull a move in Europe that will reverse the trends).

It'll only be a matter of time before the forces of install base globally start shifting in favor of PS3 getting either better ports, being the lead platform or simply getting more exclusives. UK will take a longer time, but it'll be somewhere between that and Sony getting the rest of europe that PS3's install base will be equal or surpass that of 360. Don't reply to me without taking a look at the trends, and thinking of the obvious such as better japanese support.

Take a look at the entire year 2007. XBOX360 leads and that without price cut, agressive publicity and the RROD. Next year when MS cuts the price of the 360 and announces a supirior linup you will see an increase in sales. Why do Sony fans praise PS3 so much. Less games and less AAA title. The only thing PS3 has more is promises. More hardware where sold in december for what reason? R&C, Uncharted better games then BioShock, Halo3, Mass effect? Multiplatform games are better on 360. Freakly the only reason I see is people bought PS3 because 1 & 2 where the best and are now affraid to admit that PS3 is not has good.

I'm not sure why this is such a surprise to everyone. The 360 nearly-doubled the sales of the PS3 in North America but lost in every other market. It's been the same for months now.

I'm also not sure where people get this idea that the 360 is "slowing down" in sales, when sales have been steadily increasing throughout 2007. You can compare the PS3's first year with the 360's first year if you want, but just MATCHING the 360's sales in NA isn't going to do it for Sony. They have to consistently OUTSELL the 360 for months and months at a time to close the gap.

The simple fact is that anyone calling the console war for either side right now is just being a silly fanboy. 2008 and 2009 are going to be incredibly interesting years for gaming, and it will be interesting to see if Sony's big-hitters will be out in time to stop the 360's momentum from 2007. My guess is that the PS3 will close the gap in North America but the 360 might come out a little ahead, while the 360 will get slaughtered everywhere else.

in all honesty while i commend MS for selling 17.7 million xbox 360s over 2 years and 1 month, you'd think with all they had going for them that they'd sell 15 million consoles in the second year. when all they managed to do was sell an aditional 6 million from November 2006 to november 2007 that extra million or so came in december. Sony did well. Sold with competition, Bad Media, and if you listen to the mart and fankids, No Games and poor online, bad ports, and a high price tag, and late lauching world wide. 7 million+ is great. the month of december Showed just how strong The PS brand is as even the PS2 out sold the 360 during that month world wide, which is hilairious, a last gen out sold a next gen. even the Ps3 managed to outsold the PS2, it just showed really that all people wanted was the price because as soon as the games came the out look changed. as 2008 continues. The PS3 will be sell at about 300-400K monthly in the US, coupled with great software, now hitting day and date with the counter parts on other platforms. and big name 3rd party titles, GTA4, ,and DMC4, and big exclusives MGS4, FFXIII, and GT5. a bundle at anyone point with these games will see an amazing sell through for the game. and then ending the year with new classics and big titles from the first year Motorsorm 2 and resistance should sell well and Killzone 2 if marketed well should do great.

2006 debuted with problems and backlashes.
2007 was all about establishing themself and fixing their tarnished image and addressing the game famine, and bad ports and belly aching developers.

2008 is now about giving the fanbase what they wanted from Launch, MGS, GT and Final Fantasy, and hot games from the 3rd party. and thats all this year.

No more bad ports, no more big delays, and certainly no more waiting. a price reduction with the indroduction of the new 65nm chipset for both the cell and the RSx will set in Profit and they should be able to drop the price right around september or october. right on time for black friday and christmas with the big game releases of that year. Madden(yuk) and RE5 and FFXIII, white Knight Story.

Good job though to Sony and MS and a well great job for Nintendo, They surprised me the most with their success.

MS has made sony get off their High Horse and prooved that they are hear to stay.

So it's finally starting to look like the 360 has won the next gen race. I don't include the Wii since it's not next gen. The ps3 beats out the 360 by the smallest of margins and u droids think it's over??? The ps3 would have to sell almost twice as much as the 360 in the next 2 years to catch up.
