Game of the Week: Final Fantasy VIII

Final Fantasy VIII is GamingSurvival.com's "Game of the Week". Final Fantasy VIII was released for the Playstation in 1999. This entry in the renowned RPG series courted controversy, and continues to do so. It seems to play with the foundations of how a Final Fantasy game should work, perhaps a push too far in an attempt to be original. This has led the title to be both loved and hated in equal measure. Let’s take a closer look at just what has resulted in this divided opinion. - Chris Littlechild

Final Fantasy VI was the best game in the series...

torchic4433d ago

good for you. thank you for sharing your opinion, even though it has nothing to do with the article or comment.

ritsuka6664432d ago

Final Fantasy IV had it all. ... what is now considered not only one of the best Final Fantasy games, but also one of the finest RPG in gaming history.Anyway, old Final Fantasy feel .... have been much better than this crap new games.

Lulz_Boat4431d ago

FF VII is the best.

FF VIII IX and X are good too.

too bad XII and XIII sucks hard.

Smashbro294433d ago

I'm no FF expert but wasn't this one notoriously bad?

dylandurden4433d ago

More like, notoriously hated. But it's an effing masterpiece if there ever was one.

Smashbro294433d ago

Now I got all disagreed! I said I'm not sure! Jeez..

knifefight4432d ago

@Smashbro29

Asking questions gets you disagrees on N4G.
People think asking a question is the same as expressing an opinion on the subject. They're stupid like that, so they give you disagrees for stuff instead of just answer your question.

Chrono4433d ago

Not bad, but it is hated by some fanboys because it uses different mechanics.

VanillaBear4433d ago

So true

Not to mention the fact that it was also hated because it wasn't FF7 and it in fact did things better then FF7 aswell in terms of plot, character development and game mechanics.

forevercloud30004432d ago

and said mechanics were severely broken, making the game completely master-able before you even leave Garden Territory. FFVIII is hated on for some good reasons. Not to mention Squall is sort of a narcissistic ass hole AND the supposed best love story in the FF series actually seems like pure hatred until all of a sudden her life is in danger and something clicks in Squalls head that he secretly loves her. Juvenile but believable I suppose, not mind blowing tho.

I personally used to hate this game with an unbridled passion but I have learned to love certain aspects. The combat is enjoyable but like I said, broken(Squall can NEVER miss, doing 9999 damage by second mission, spamming draws and junctioning, etc). Story is a bit convoluted as well but certain things about it are pure genius(rinoa x ultimecia paradox).

I must have played the first disc a million times, I get bored shortly after leaving and then just start over again. I will say tho, best Intro Movie in the series :)

VanillaBear4432d ago (Edited 4432d ago )

@forevercloud3000

I was going to agrue since most of what you have said is BS.....like being "master able", yeah if you work your arse off but then again thats your choice as a player not the games fault or Squall being an arsehole when again like many others your just judging him on the character we meet at the beginging of the game, but since your an obvious FF7 fan Im not even going to bother.

The fact your name is "forevercloud3000" makes sense that your hate FF8 and prooves Chronos point. Your a FF7 fanboy and your hate FF8.....so obvious

The hate isn't deserved, FF13s hate is deserved, FF8 apparent hate just comes from the people who were new to FF, fell in love with FF7 and expected FF8 to be the sequel of 7, even though each game is a new story.

Nerdmaster4432d ago

Yes, it is. Bad story and terrible plot twist, bad characters and character development, bad magic system, bad "enemies level with you" system... Even the opening CG was bad (it was visually stunning, but had spoilers and didn't make much sense, much more a trailer than an opening scene). But the graphics were good for its time.

Hicken4432d ago

That entire comment is utterly ridiculous. VIII had arguably one of the best stories. The "plot twist" is better than VII's, at the least. The characters and their development are among the best in the series, especially Squall's. The magic system was perfectly fine. The enemies didn't level with you: you could be level 99 on disc 1, and the stuff you fought would be the same level as when you were level 10. And the opening CG is still one of the best openings in gaming, setting the tone for the game and giving you some key information before you even needed it.

Essentially, it's apparent that you don't know what you're talking about. I'll bet VII is your favorite, and like so many others, you hate VIII cuz it's not VII.

Nerdmaster4432d ago

@Hicken

Every VIII fanboy say that Squall development is exemplary. It isn't. Just because he started as an ass and ended as a "hero" doesn't make it a good character development. He stays the same all the game and almost in the end it's like "oh, I think the game is ending and I can't finish it like this. I have an idea! I'll change completely in 3... 2... 1...".

Want to see a good character development? Play X. Tidus starts as a whiny teenager who just wants to go home. Then we can see him change throughout the game, learning about his reality, the sacrifices the summoners have to make, and in the end, [SPOILERS] when Yuna says that she loves him, it feels real and natural, not something forced like Squall and Rinoa (what's ironic is that they are in the logo, but it's one of the worst romances in all FF games) [/SPOILERS]. In other words, we can see him changing, differente from Squall, who until the end keeps his "whatever - I don't care" attitude and suddenly becomes another person.

And.. are you sure you played the game? Everybody knows the enemies level with you on VIII (and it was so bad that it was never used anymore). If you were level 99, your enemies would also be level 99. It's not what I think it is, it's really how the game is. Go find a FAQ about it, ok?

And you missed by miles. VII is another terrible game.

VanillaBear4432d ago

Squalls character is good.....it's nothing about being a FF8 fanboy, it's good if you've played the game and learn about his character through the flasbacks and converstations in the game.

Rinoa are Squall are more real then Yuna and Tidus, at least theres a build up with Squall and Rinoa, they don't just get right into it, Rinoa has to break down Squalls character which is part of the reason how he changes into this self lonely jerk to this brave heroic leader. It's the reason why the kiss at the very end of the game is so satisfying.

So yeah...it's good character development....get over it.

Nerdmaster4431d ago

Wow, that must be the most forced way I ever saw anybody trying to make Squall and Rinoa's "romance" make any sense. Too bad that the "build up", "break down Squalls character" and whatnot aren't real. He demonstrates no love at all for Rinoa and then suddenly in space at almost the end of the game, he decides he cares for her. Yeah, really good build up.

People who defend FFVIII loves to say "Squall had reasons to be a jerk like that". Ok. Does it change the fact that he was a jerk for the whole damn game and changed suddenly in the end? No.

iMpuTeD4433d ago

yup this was easily my fav ff. the opening fmv in this game is hands down the most epic one ever. it gives me chills everytime i see it and hear it.

Canary4433d ago

Isn't there a statute of limitations for these things? Like, I don't know, "plus or minus one week?"

SandwichHammock4432d ago

The only bad thing I can say about this game is how you find items like weapon magazines and the like. You have to run all over the place spamming X. Unless of course you a strategy guide kind of gamer.

Cheers.

Yup, it's official. FFXVI and FFVII Rebirth didn't sell as much as they expected.

gold_drake7h ago

read the report, where exactly does it say what u just said ? lol

Barlos5h ago

It's your interpretation. That doesn't make it 'official'.

Sonic18811h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Probably for PC and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Square Enix games doesn't sell to well on Xbox

Extermin8or3_1h ago

Nothing sells well on Xbox that's precisely Microsoft's problem

The3faces21m ago

Apparently they don't sell well on PlayStation either.

DarXyde1h ago

I mean, maybe? They'll want as much as possible and I figure they could have been hoping for greater impact on PlayStation, but that's good reason to reflect and realize the resources and development cycle of these games aren't very sustainable. The solution is to make more affordable games with shorter dev cycles, then once in a while bring out the big guns.

I think Final Fantasy VII Re make and Rebirth would do really well if it was multiplatform. Specifically, if Nintendo gets their hardware up to snuff, and the rumors are promising. I don't really have much faith in its performance on Xbox, but Nintendo gamers really commit to buying their games. At one point, Breath of the Wild for Switch outsold the Switch itself.

Granted, Zelda always solos everything except GTA, but Nintendo folk are avid Final Fantasy fans. I think it would do exceptionally. Nintendo just needs to make porting easy and inexpensive and they'll get more games.

Hopefully the next Nintendo system isn't a potato and it can contribute to FF sales in future as well, in addition to PC releases. If this ensures the long term health for SE and franchises than like FF and KH then I'm all for it.

NotoriousWhiz6h ago

Adding Nintendo and PC customers is the best way to increase sales and long term success. Not going to get that from Xbox.

shinoff21832h ago

Hopefully square brings all the lose switch exclusives over to.

Hofstaderman6h ago

Will there be a XBOX for Square to release games on? Or a MS Games service?

thesoftware7304h ago

Hof,

You must not have heard they are launching new hardware and have already committed to a Next-Gen Xbox.

But, for some reason, I think you already knew that and wanted to spin a silly narrative; besides, why wouldn't they release games on the SX/SS? You do know these consoles will still be here, right?

Hofstaderman3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Optics. They have a STATED plan to do so. Thats not commitment. The shareholders and board are calling the shots now. Lets see if they have the appetite for hardware because they are owed 80 Billion Dollars already. Investment in hardware, R and D and marketing is how much again? That cost with the history of their hardware performance....at most maybe a handheld. What I am certain of XBOX is finished, the writing has been on the wall before the studio closures. Its MS Games and they are not hardware. They are software because MS is a software company. Expect them to be folded in the Surface team.

DarXyde1h ago

*hardware

I believe they committed to hardware.

I hate to nitpick, but that's kind of the company they are. You have to.

RealSpeak1h ago

“ What I am certain of XBOX is finished”

Xbox has been finished for the past 20 years according to Sony fanboys like yourself.

Aloymetal2h ago

No to both, not worth the effort, money and time on an already dying brand.

RealSpeak1h ago

Square should just go PC exclusive.

PS and Xbox are dead. PC rules the roost.

thesoftware7302h ago

"They have a STATED plan to do so. That's not commitment."

Huh? What are you talking about? They announced they would be unveiling new Hardware this holiday season; how else are they supposed to commit to it?

" Lets see if they have the appetite for hardware because they are owed 80 Billion Dollars already"

What a silly statement, you think this deal was approved so they could make 80 billion in less than a year? This is a long-term commitment, a future-proofing of profit.

"What I am certain of XBOX is finished,"

No, you are not certain of this lol; as you stated, if they make even a Handheld in the form of a Steam-Deck that can dock to a TV/monitor, wouldn't that be just changing the form factor but still XBOX?

Closing these studios has really got you guys delusional; that is what happens in companies, in a changing market: you acquire, and you trim; like it or not, that is the way things are done. Lets look.

Where is the new Psygnosis with a new wipeout?
What happened to Japan Studio? Pixl Opus? London Studio?
Where is Zipper Interactive?

I can list more, but you see, closing devs doesn't mean your company is finished, especially when you have like 30+ dev teams.

Extermin8or3_1h ago

They won't be unveiling the hardware this holiday season it will be like the series x and s they got a tease at the game awards 2018. But no details until year of their release in 2020 lol

Relientk776h ago

Please tell me the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is still coming. I feel like I've been waiting forever for that game.

gold_drake1h ago

i think the juggernauts kingdom hearts (disney provides the money for that one) final fantasy and dragon quest are fine, the rest not as much

Charal6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Another sign that dedicated consoles market is in trouble, while PC seems more and more attractive to big publishers.

Having a good gaming PC and a PS5 myself, given current trend form both Sony and MS I am less and less playing on PS5, waiting for exclusives to release on PC, so I understand the logic behind the new strategy.

anast5h ago

Post those numbers. Then your comment might make sense.

thesoftware7304h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Ants,

I get that we don't know exactly without numbers, but come on, man, we can clearly see what's happening.

The console market has not grown much, the highest-selling console in history is still the PS2. You can play the " prove it" game all you want, but Sony's more aggressive PC push, SE completely rebooting their company/business, after being mainly exclusive to one console and showing a sizeable profit loss is telling.

PC is a high seller, and your doubtful PS5 dominant stance does not change the clear writing on the wall, straight from Sony's mouth, that they need to be, and will be more aggressive in the very lucrative PC market.

So, in other words, PC market is indeed looking more and more attractive to Pubs.

anast3h ago

@730

Numbers?

I'm willing to bet the farm that ¨PC gamers are not the dominate number compared to console, but I don't know because I don't have numbers. However, the price point of entry can allow us to infer what I had just stated.

What are they doing over there? Sounds like they canceled something big. I read a rumor a while back about ff9 remake . Here "Final Fantasy IX has gone through a very challenging development, the game is still in progress but may undergo changes drastic enough that we won't hear about it for a couple of years."
This could be one of the reasons if the rumor is true. That was Silknight i don't know how credible he is but it's something and it would make sense.

-Foxtrot13d ago

I hope IX is still on the cards

Just a straight up remake which they expand a little bit nothing over ambitious

If IX dosent happen then VI and VIII will never be thought of.

Kakashi Hatake12d ago

6 and 8 were way more p popular games despite today's cult following of 9.

blackbeld12d ago

I want my FF8 remake! Can't believe they cancelled it.

TiredGamer13d ago

What are they doing? Sales are falling and the costs are out of control. Big releases need to be absolute sales home runs now, and Final Fantasy sales have stagnated.

Now we know why Square didn’t fall over themselves to remake the original FF7 all these years ago. It certainly wasn’t a license to print money, at least not with what the expectations were. Each of these full on remakes drains an enormous amount of company resources for a razor thin profit margin.

TwoPicklesGood13d ago

Breaking the game up into multiple parts was a mistake IMO.

blackblades12d ago

The loses came from cancelling games nothing else.

Tapani12d ago

They lost the magic in the remakes. And the story is incomplete. The original FF7 is still way better. The Remake / Rebirth are just fan service. Like an Anime/Manga with "optional" filler content. FF7 had pretty much zero filler, it was paced extremely well, and still today flows much better than the grindy story and spongey enemy battles in the remakes.

babadivad12d ago

If they released it at once on all platforms, they would have made all of their money back. Could have been on to an FF8 or 9 remake. Ready to cash in again on nostalgia like Capcom. This is their fault for trying to milk the title.

Once I head they were breaking it up into parts, I lost all interest.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 12d ago
neutralgamer199212d ago

I hope people understand usually when a loss is declared it means a game which had been in development got cancelled. For example Sony Santa Monica before GOW-PS4 had cancelled a project which Sony had spent 7 figures on

As far as square is concerned they release a bad game once a year. Forspoken anyone?

For those making comments on remake not selling well, I hope y’all realize that Sony is the only reason this remake is happening. If Sony didn’t fund it the remake wouldn’t be happening. Just like Konami didn’t want to remake SH2 because development costs of 100 plus million

shadowT13d ago

Do not miss Final Fantasy 16. Great game!

raWfodog13d ago

I'm waiting for them to release the complete edition bundle, but it's definitely on my list.

PhillyDonJawn13d ago

Wth is going on with the gaming industry?

mandf13d ago

Corporate investors taking everything

TiredGamer13d ago

Not rocket science. Compare sales numbers, development cycles, and budgets to the previous gens. We are all collectively burning up the industry from the inside out. Expectations are ludicrously high now for every release and sales are dropping for even the most prestigious of series.

We used to be satisfied paying $50-60 for a game that took 1/100th the budget and staff to make. Now gamers feel cheated if they have to pay the same for a game that took 100x the budget. We may be reaching the end of the line for this model of gaming.

wiz719112d ago

@tiredgamer I think your point is one that ppl don’t understand and you hit it on the nose .. some gamers don’t want to take accountability but it’s some of the gamers fault the industry is where it’s at .. we as gamers set the standards for the industry not the shareholders , ppl forget that the shareholders and the industry want and need OUR Money. Both the Xbox and PlayStation are seeing a drop in hardware , the industry is very stagnant right now.

Tacoboto12d ago

Speaking to Square:

Turns out their mismanagement wasn't related to the western studios they dumped to Embracer, but their own fault.

With regards to Xbox - a good way to kill your brand is to pull support on high quality titles and only dump B and C-tier titles to it

With regards to PC - Epic Games Story exclusivity for any duration and piss-poor optimization will hurt you.

With regards to FF Pixel Remasters - y'all messed up by barely releasing them on physical, like wtf that was free money!

And lastly, you don't help a franchise by releasing a mainline title that undermines every title that came before it. FFXVI was a DMC-like with bottom-of-the-barrel side quests and I can't imagine that helping Rebirth at all considering its marketing is directly tied to how big that game is.

Tacoboto12d ago

Sony is getting their best titles and with the most polish, so what about it? Nintendo gets their top properties too, for titles that can run on Switch hardware.

It's the other fanbases that get the second- and third-class treatment from Square. If that's due to agreements with Sony, that's not a Sony issue but a Square one for accepting those terms. Sony is doing its best to look out for Sony.

wesnytsfs12d ago

sales and stupid practices like exclusives.

TiredGamer13d ago

The industry implosion is continuing. Sky high budgets, prolonged development windows, stagnant sales numbers, and falling currency values (inflation) are wreaking havoc on the legacy industry. AAA games will slowly become the rarity.

CS713d ago

Sad. Rebirth was one of my favorite games in a long time. Should have sold more.

CrimsonWing6913d ago

Oh I’m with you. What’s worse is they can say, “Well we tried to make this amazing game and spend all this money on, but not enough people showed an interest. So no more of these since we can’t take a hit like that.”

The industry is going to take a dramatic shift. Mark my words on this.

rpvenom12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

I think there is quite a large portion of individuals like myself who held out on buying it on PS5 because I can get it on PC eventually. To be able to mod the game and also have custom graphical settings to my liking

gold_drake12d ago

same

but im not sure if it matters at all. im sure they made sony pay a hefty sum for the 3parter to come on ps5 exclusively. so watever they made in sales, might have come bk in profits for square, but i dont know
and we dont know what "underperformed" even means for square.

Square & Bandai Namco Being Honest About Quality Is A Step In The Right Direction

I was talking about games with some Japanese guys here in Japan, and it seems like around here Bandai Namco has a fame of making low-quality games, with the occasional gem.

About Square Enix, I believe they lack the capacity to improve. They should learn with Capcom (although even Capcom still makes some bad mistakes), but I don't think they ever will. They keep chasing whatever is new at the time (blockchain, AI...) to say "we innovate", without considering the public perception and if these things actually improve the games or not. Them releasing too many small games with no advertising also shows a lack of trust in its own products. Even with their biggest games, like turning FF into an action game with XVI and the very divisive plot changes regarding whispers and timelines in VII Remake, shows them trying to attract a new generation of gamers without understanding what made the series so big in the first place.

shinoff218313d ago

I want a true ff7 remake. With thatcsaid I'm way happier with 7 remake then I was with ff16. I'd still prefer turn based but square keep chasing these Lil kids

Snookies1213d ago

Man, it is perfectly fine to prefer turn based. Turn based is amazing. But there's zero reason to call anyone who likes action games "lil kids". Liking one gameplay system over another does not make you more mature in any way.

VersusDMC13d ago

People love the new FF's overall...the problem is the abundance of 7's they release that lose money or make very little like diofield, star ocean divine force, Valkyrie asylum, harvestella, foam stars, etc. Advertising wouldn't have saved those games. Apparently Forespoken had a big Advertising budget but we saw how that went.

shinoff218313d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Star ocean divine force actually sold well from what I've read not ff type numbers but well enough. Was a dope game to.

FinalFantasyFanatic13d ago

Bandai Namco is going to Bandai Namco, I do believe that Square Enix can't change without changing the entire management, they've had these issues for more than a decade and haven't learnt, I have very little faith they can course correct. I'll still buy their better remasters/remakes like Star Ocean 2 though (not FF7R).

Asterphoenix13d ago

Namco is just milking the same Sword Art Online with lack of budget as well as anime IPs that don't go to decent developers like Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia. Namco deserves their losses and no future Dot Hack or Xenosaga remaster :(.

Square allocated lot of their budget on Forspoken was a mistake. Square always had management issues. Star Ocean 2 was a great remake and I found their recent entries of FF(16 and Rebirth) better than 13 and 15.
I think they were better than 360/PS3 generation where Square went really downhill.

CrimsonWing6913d ago

I don’t know why NOW they decide on this, but I guess later is better than never.
