Sony's sexy new tube: TV of the future?

Here's what's happening: it's called "OLED" TV. OLED stands for "organic light-emitting diode." You pronounce it "oh-ledd." The picture is stunning. Absolutely amazing. There are no superlatives that can do the thing justice. It's not TV. It's a window. Or a looking-glass. The clarity of the image on this new kind of television is difficult to describe, unless you've seen one.

Samsung has already produced a 27inch, and others can make big ones. This is actually kind of old news really--the main problem with oled's is the life of the blue diodes, not size. It is true that sony is not the inovator on this, although it is now their main focus. No major player can really claim inovation on this; the paten was created 10-15 years ago by Kodak, and they still own it.

For clarification, in regards to flat panel TV's, Samsung and Sony are synonymous. Samsung manufactures Sony's flat panel TV's.

and just so you know the ones you are talking about are LED backlit lcd display's they are still LCD's but their light source is an LED. They cost 2-3x the normal price of LCD's and are very bright. They still dont have the 1million:1 contrast ratio or equal colour distribution as OLEDs do, thus the reason they are so big. and besides, OLEDs are REALLY REALLY expensive :)

Bravia is not #1, not even close actually, realize. OLEDs wont make it big in 08, its not a posibility considering they are still incredibly expensive (hence reserved for a small portion consumers), don't last long and don't exist in mainstream sizes like 32 inch. I wish it would, but it wont. Besides, Sony aren't the only ones doing OLEDs, and how tha fk are they going to take 50% (HAHAHAHA) of the market?!!??! Study economy, I think it might help you a lot.

remember when the lcd tvs were launched they were too expensive, and as poeple began upgrading from rear projection to lcd it became more and more cheaper, now the lcd tvs have acheived at least a 60 per cent market penetration(i laugh everytime i use this word), so the market have been acheived a high saturation (because the rest won't buy the thing until it is damn cheap) so to satisfy the need of customers to higher image quality you need a new technology(this time it is oled), it is pretty the same with the games console market
the point here is: sony always takes the high risk investments(proof the ps3, a high investment long term project), that's what makes a succesful company, being innovative(but in this particular case they haven't invented the tech, they bought a licence, but with their bravia tv engine, they can optimize it), but the thing that bothers me is that sony is on recession for creating new techs, they are striding for maximum profitability(proof they sold their semi-conductor production facilities), this is all began when sir howard stringer took on the the presidency of the corporation,,,, notice that in the time of jap presidents, the company was more inclined to create new techs, i hope they don't give up this process of creation, but let's wait and see(that's the only thing we can do)

right now, its not about the price, but the technology. Remember when DVD players first came out, remember when HDTV's first came out, remember when BLU-Ray and HD-DVD players first came out. Right now tis expensive, but people that have a lot of money, can buy one, but right now, its about what the technology can do. Dont even think about the price, or buying it, but the technology is definately impressive. Dont hate on Sony.

other TV manufacturers we're working on OLED long before sony worked on it, sony jumped on the bandwagon and pushed forward and rushed the smallest workable type tv so they could say! look we did it first!

many other TV companies, including samsung and panasonic we're working on OLED tvs long before sony jumped on, which is why sony is never innovative they are emmulative they haven't invented a working popular product ever, they have only jumped on the bandwagon of what other companies have created or are creating.

Also sony has been including OLED screens on some of their mp3 players. I was wondering when a TV would come. Now it's time for the others to follow suit.

but Sony makes nice TVs - I owned a Sony tube before I picked up a Panaonic plasma and if the price drops a little I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another Sony TV.

Still, the problem right now is the price - I suspect it is going to be about two years before the price drops and the size increases enough for OLED to be viable. It will be interesting to see what LCD and plasma do to compete. Still, I like the power consumption so I suspect, all other things being equal, the OLED design will be successful.

Just hurry up already (and I don't care if it is Sony or someone else) - I just want a 40-60 inch TV that looks fantastic.

second, it uses 3 organic materials to emit the light, right now blue and green are around 66k hours of life, but red is only 30k. If they can find a way to improve the red life, it will replace current technology. BTW its as thin as a door mat.

30 000 hours is over 10 years at 8 hours a day. I think on average i watch my t.v 2-6 hours a day max (not every day). In my avg. use this television would last me 20 years.

If ANY electrical device i own right now would last that long i would be ecstatic.

but I think people are excited about Sony's version because of it's contrast ratio. Samsung's OLED is 5000:1 while Sony's OLED is said to be 1,000,000:1

BTW: SED TV's do seem pretty dope, I'm more into OLED though. But until OLED gets cheaper and bigger, I may have to get me an SED when it comes out :) 100,000:1 contrast ratio is no small feat.

These fanboys really don't know when to stop.

First of all, Sony has always had alot of sucess in what they do except no company is perfect.

They expect you to hand over the you're cash for quality and luxury, but sometimes you don't have that cash and you might be looking for something simple.

The ps3 was a mistake, ut not the gaming system itself, the marketing strategy by Sony was the real mistake. The price, games, and advertising really did'nt let the ps3 claim the glory that it should of had.

Now, every company makes there mistakes, Sony has been on top for about 2 gens with the ps1 and ps2.

their ps2 is a record holder and has sold like hotcakes and is still selling alot.

Now, just because sony made a mistake with their ps3, does'nt mean they suck at everything else.

look at their lead with blu ray over hddvd. Sony is a sucessful company, this might work for them or maybe it won't, but just remember that just because they made a mistake with the ps3 does'nt mean they're gonna make a mistake with everything else. Besides, they have learned their lesson.

This 31 inch OLED screen costs $1700 and lasts for only 35000 hours on average. This is far less life then an LCD and... unlike an LCD... this lifetime is when it will fail... not when its backlight will reduce its output to around 50%. OLED may be the future and I welcome it with arms wide open but... this will not gain any significant market share for at least a couple years.

plans:
Develop the OLED HDTV's and discontinue the other models.
Upgrade both the PS3 and PSP with a frimware upgrade to the newer technology.
Upgrade the Blu-ray players to newer technology.
Once you put all of this together this will slaughter the Xbox forever.
Upgrade games to higher resolution.
This way Sony is strong in all areas.
Sony so far has sold 8 million PS3's, 120 million PS3's, and hella PSP's.
I now understand why Sony is in it for the long run develop, create, and upgrade technology and products then takeover the market.

you're right about the contrast, but after you have uttered this gem, all of your words became bullshit, you know why; it is because you missed one big point, yes there is some other tv types that can offer full hd with this brilliant contrast, but the new oled tv's offer this contrast with full hd on 12 inch tv for god's sake, so what will happen when the screens get bigger, we will an ultra high definition tv, and that's not far-off(three or four years from now, five max) and i read somewhere(i don't have the link now) that there is a company(tv comp) already experimenting with Uhd broadcasts, so this is the future, an even higher definition hihidef, or Uhd, but this won't become a standard in a very long time(i guess the the same timespan that took the lcd to be a "mass adoption" item, so every techonology have limits, and a new one will be created
