Why You Shouldn’t be Upset if Fatal Frame II’s Remake Doesn’t Come Stateside

Adorkably's Gerald DeMattia writes:

"No one can say that it hasn’t been an extremely odd year for the Nintendo Wii. Xenoblade is finally coming stateside and XSEED stepped up to the plate to deliver The Last Story onto us. Now, Nintendo of Europe announces that the previously Japan only Fatal Frame II: The Crimson Butterfly remake will indeed get a Euro release.

While exciting at first, it’s hard to forget the cold shoulder Nintendo of America gave us when it came to bringing the fourth entry in the series stateside. This leads me to believe we won’t be joining the Amakura sisters on their second tour of All Gods Village. With that said, I’m not as crushed this time around.

I had to give it some thought because something about this “remake” is off-putting and I’m not talking about the resident ghouls."

You want us to be interested? bring out FF4, then we can talk.

LX-General-Kaos4468d ago

Its a shame that it won't come out in america. I am not surprised one bit judging by what type of games make it and which don't in the west. Our great developers are finding less reason to bring their hard work to the west. Hopefully all of this will change through the life cycle of the Nintendo Wii U.

Hopefully all real elite gamers worldwide join together to help Nintendo remain at the top of the gaming spectrum. Games Like Fatal Frame will have a higher chance to be released in all territories if the install base is a respectable size like the original Nintendo Wii.

Lucky for us all Nothing is impossible when dealing with the Nintendo. As they have proven time and time again that anything is possible through hard work. Nintendo developers have been working hard for decades to bring us all the greatest gaming experiences that money can buy.

Your love and support is appreciated. Long live Nintendo.

Rated E For Everyone

ThePsychoGamer4468d ago

First the development team (which luckily arn't own by Nintendo) douse want the Fatal Frame series, the who reason they sighed a deal with Nintendo was because the want the games to get better marketing.

The reason 4, and likely 2 did not come out in the west is because the weastern branches of Nintendo want to be seen geared to a younger demographic. A M rated game like Fatal Frame goes agaist that idea. The only thing tha t could change that is a big overhaul of these branches management.

Luckily Nintendo dousn't own the Fatal Frame IP, so as soon as the deal is over, Tecmo Koei can make a new deal with a publisher that both respects the wishes of the development team and the desires of gamers.

na-no-nai4468d ago

I don't think fatal frame going anywhere but nintendo. If I am correct, nintendo brought the fatal frame franchise from tecmo. I remember reading an article a few years back. During that time tecmo wasn't doing so well

ThePsychoGamer4468d ago (Edited 4468d ago )

@na-no-nai: No Nintendo have not bought the Fatal Frame franchise, So yes we will most likely see the series go to a different publisher. Who knows, maybe if we are lucky Tecmo Koei held on to the world publishing rights for FF2, so they themselves can release it in the west.

If we are getting a fatal frame 3ds to America. what make you think we as not getting fatal frame 2 remake? If I remember correctly both Tecmo and Nintendo had an issue with ff4. Ff4 have lots of bugs and glitches. I played it on my wii with the translation patch. Nintendo wanted Tecmo to fixed the glitches and bugs but Tecmo did not want to do it for free. We just have to wait and see. Also Europe did not get ff4 either

Adorkably4468d ago

I definitely agree with you there, we have a way better chance of seeing Fatal Frame II make its way over to the US then we did with Fatal Frame IV. I was mostly just pointing out the reasons why I wouldn't be as heartbroken as I was with Fatal Frame IV if it didn't.

On a side note... would you recommend IV? I was thinking about picking it up soon.

na-no-nai4468d ago

Yes true. Which I hope it does make it here as well.

As for recommendations for ff4; I have to say yes. Its very good and freaky. I love it. Although I have not beat it yet. Not sure which ff is more scary at all. Almost as good as ff1 if not better.

Pozzle4468d ago

I love the irony of Nintendo refusing to release Fatal Frame 4 overseas due to a glitch, even though Skyward Sword had the exact same sort of game-breaking glitch. Not that I'm bad-mouthing either game. I just thought it was ironic...especially since Fatal Frame 4 is a VERY good horror title. Nintendo were crazy to not allow the game an international release. They've let shittier (and glitchier) games be released on their console.

na-no-nai4468d ago

Those shittier and glithier games are not from Nintendo themselves. Most of those games are from third party and Nintendo does not fund them. As for FF4; I'm thinking its not really about the glitches that prevent it more likely some kind of issue with Tecmo.

But who to say; no one really knows.

Pozzle4468d ago (Edited 4468d ago )

True, but Nintendo still has to approve the games that go onto the Wii. Publishers don't just buy a license and get to release whatever they want. It just seems a bit odd to me that Nintendo are ok with the abundance of crappy, glitchy, poor quality games that are released on the Wii and yet they're not ok with releasing a genuinely great game (with a solid track record) like Fatal Frame 4 because it apparently didn't live up to Nintendo's quality. I mean...wtf! If they didn't want to publish the game, why not just sell the rights back to Tecmo? Or sell them to another publisher? FF4 is hardly the worst game on the Wii. It didn't deserve that sort of treatment. Hell, I'd go as far to say it's one of the best non-Nintendo games on the console!

Like you said, there was probably some deeper issue behind it all. The whole thing just sounds so...strange.

Pozzle4468d ago

"Maybe what I’m trying to say here is that I was way more excited for a new entry in the Fatal Frames series of stories, rather than a “remake” with subtle changes at best"

I agree tbh. I'll definitely buy the FF2 remake if it comes out over here, but I'm faaaar more interested in a Fatal Frame 5 if one ever gets made. I just hope future FF games actually make it outside Japan this time!

Alos884468d ago

If they won't release this stateside, the odds aren't exactly great that they'll release a new entry in the series stateside either, especially since the fourth game never left Japan.

Pozzle4468d ago

I'm not sure if Nintendo own the rights to the entire series or not, but I remember a couple of years ago that Tecmo said they wanted FF5 to be released on PS3/360 to avoid any more drama from Nintendo.

Adorkably4468d ago

@pozzle I'm not entirly sure if Nintendo owns the publishing rights to the entire series either. They may own it for any games that appear on the Wii though. Then again I only believe that because any announcments regarding Fatal Frame IIs Remake have come out of Nintendos mouth rather than Tecmos or anyone elses for that matter.

stragomccloud4467d ago

It's sad too, because 4 sold more than twice any of the other internationally released Fatal Frame titles, accounting for a whopping 40% of the lifetime franchise sales. So.... what the heck Nintendo!

stragomccloud4467d ago

Just gotta' wait for another fan translation, like with Fatal Frame IV~ Since II already came out here though, shouldn't be too difficult to translate with the original game as a reference.

That said, while I agree Fatal Frame on Wii U would be completely full of win, his statements about the Wii being "last gen" is a little false, but while Wii is almost laughably behind hardwarewise compared to Xbox 360/PS3, it is at least 6 times more powerful than a PS2. So the graphical bump is more than noticeable... That said though..... Why the heck isn't this on the Wii U! The controller would be amaaaaaaazing for the Fatal Frame Franchise. Hopefully Wii U gets a remastered 1, 3, or better yet... a new entry in the franchise!!!!

Great news it shows that Nintendo intends to continue developing ports of AAA games to its next gen platform

H93d ago

Buying studios from embracer now is a great deal, they must be dirt cheap at this point, Nintendo is a opportunist, they wait until someone fall so they get their best deal

OtterX2d ago

That is some serious brain gymnastics you have going on there. 🤔

H92d ago

I didn't do any gymnastics I can assure you, honestly I don't know why you think that, not hating I seriously don't see why you think that

ZeekQuattro2d ago

Yeah I don't know where that came from. It's rare for Nintendo to flat out aquire studios. Guess they were trying to be edgy but why flex on this studio. 🤣

Kneetos1d 21h ago

At least they are safer from layoffs with Nintendo then any other company

banger883d ago

I hope someone buys Piranha Bytes, their future isn't looking good right now. I love their RPGs, they're janky as f***, but they have heart and soul.

Relientk773d ago

Nintendo saw the Mortal Kombat 1 Switch port and were like, "Yeah, these guys are worth acquiring."

You can't make this crap up lol

Profchaos2d ago

Mortal Kombat 1 was never going to port well I'm sure they told wb it wasn't going to work but wb wants that sweet sweet 140 million install base

In the end wb approved the project cleared the milestones and allowed the product to release

SonOfOsiris2d ago

Yeah this guys ported MK11 which is great, Hogwarts Legacy which is great, and MK1 is now ok, play it every day

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Inverno19d ago

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.
