EA Wants to Own The FPS Genre by 2014, Will Battlefield: Bad Company 3 Be the Knockout Punch?

MP1st - Electronic Arts has set their sights on reclaiming the first-person shooter throne for a while now – two and half years, to be exact. And COO, Peter Moore, predicts that within the same amount of time, EA will, indeed, own the genre based on their original 5-year plan to make it to the top.

Considering that Frostbite 2.0 is next-gen technology, and EA invented and owns it, whereas the CoD engine is nothing more than a well-maintained, highly modified Quake 3 engine, I would say that Activision has a *ton* of work to do, before they are going to be able to get CoD to compete with its next-gen competition.

Presumably, they have never had need of a serious engineering team at IW or Treyarch (or Sledgehammer), because maintaining an existing engine is a hella-lot easier than building a new one. They insist that their code is slick, but we've already seen it falling behind the curve, and it has never seemed to fully embrace multi-core tech like the new Frostbite engine appears to.

You got your work cut out for you, Activision. Get to it, or suffer the consequences.

Soldierone4461d ago

I agree. However people should check out the other games Activision has used the COD engine for. There are plenty of them, most notably 007 and Singularity. It can do more, but hasnt for COD.

What I'm saying is this new engine has even more on it's plate. It has to still be easy, be spread across several titles, and still be for a casual shooter base. If they go to lengths of destruction like Battlefield they are going to run into massive errors, and personally I think that is what EA is hoping for.

You are right though, it will be rather interesting to see them actually develop a new engine. Treyarch would be fun to watch, but Sledgehammer no. Personally I think they will just end up purchasing an engine and modifying it like they did with Quake 3. I mean they work with Raven, and ID is sitting right there which is entirely capable of doing something for them.

Mister_V4461d ago

I think (and hope) that Frostbite 2 will be sticking around for a while. The cool thing is that by the time BC3 rolls along, they'll probably have gotten a much better handle on the engine.

GraveLord4461d ago

Your right COD is severely lacking in the animation/graphics department. But saying EA will "own" the FPS genre by 2014 is just silly. I do however think they have a huge advantage going into next-gen. Hopefully EA sticks with Frostbite 2.0 and refines it. No need for Frostbite 3.0 any time soon.

JeffGUNZ4460d ago

Frostbite 2.0 is nice, but to be fair, we have no idea what COD engine is going to be. I heard word in previous articles that the next gen engine is in the works, but of course they don't release any information on it. I am sure activision won't allow a sub-par engine into a new generation. I expect a great engine that will just be tweaked throughout the next gen.

ATi_Elite4460d ago

1. if anyone owns the FPS category then it is VALVE!

Team Fortress, Half Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, Counter Strike, Day of Defeat

I don't care how many military FPS EA releases on the Frostbite 2 engine, your just not touching that DIVERSE line-up of great titles.

2. But i do very much enjoy EA's commitment to pushing the envelope and games like BC2 and BF3 have really provided me with a million hours of Happy Gaming!

BC3 would just be more sugary sweets as i am enjoying eating my cake and ice cream with BF3!

BUT.....Call of Duty is what it is so i wonder will Activision make a huge push to improve the series next Gen or just keep pumping out CODMW1 but with new titles and numbers.

All in all I'll be too busy playing Arma III, Firefall, and Planetside 2 to even care!

DEATHSTROKE-cro-4461d ago

I must say something.
In my opinion, Battlefield Bad Company 2 was better game than Battlefield 3. I returned to BC2 like 2 months ago and is soooo fun. And a lot of people are still playing on PS3.
Battlefield 3 maps are nothing special, graphics are ok (city maps are graphically nothing special), BC2 is more fluid, BC2 explosions are better, feeling when you destroy a tank or chopper is better in BC2, every gun sounds and feels different in BC2, maps are great in BC2, BF3 has too many places to camp, but BF3 has better rank progress because you get more stuff for weapons and you are rewarded with those medals....

So, I really hope they don't fuck up Bad Company 3 :-(

fluffydelusions4461d ago

Hm I have both though I haven't played BF3 in a while. Honestly just tired of shooters...Maybe I'll hop back on BC2 for a bit.

Outside_ofthe_Box4461d ago

BC3 is most likely going to play similar to BF3 because BF3 sold so well.

fluffydelusions4461d ago

I agree. It will likely just be a clone.

vallencer4460d ago (Edited 4460d ago )

Actually im pretty sure bc3 won't be a clone considering DICE themselves have said that bad company is a spin off of thr BF series. BC is ment to be a faster paced battlefield hence a lot of the design choices they did from BF2 to the BC series.

Captain Qwark 94461d ago (Edited 4461d ago )

i actually agree completely. i also miss the complete destruction. i understand they said they toned ti down for balance issues but........few games were as adrenaline pumping as BC2 when you had to get to the objective but literally every piece of cover has been destroyed except the bottom 1' base of where a building once was.

for BC i just want a game similar to BC2 with prone

TheFirstClassic4461d ago

Less destruction really hurt bf3 for me, in bc2 if you thought someone was camping somewhere, you could just blow the wall up from behind to take them out, you can't always do that in bf3. Also, it allows more strategy in the way you try to assault objectives.

Mister_V4461d ago

I think DICE knows why people appreciated (and still do) Bad Company 2. Also, because it's a spin-off series, I think they'd make a conscious effort to differentiate it from their main 'Battlefield' series. Basically, my hopes are high that they will stick to what made BC2 so fun in BC3.

ATi_Elite4460d ago

you gotta play it on the PC and i'm NOT talking about graphics.

The PC and console versions are different in a lot of ways due to the limitations of the consoles the maps are smaller and not just player size but the maps are really condensed.

I'm a PC gamer and have played BF3 on both consoles and have found myself SO many times saying "WTF that's different" or "Dam this map is wrong"!

This comes from hundreds of BF3 PC gaming hours and having a pattern of play then playing it on the console and noticing things and the experience are really different. Not good, not bad, JUST DIFFERENT!

Both console versions are made well but the PC version is a different experience. BC2 plays virtually the same on the PC as the consoles cause BC2 is a CONSOLE title where as BF3 is a PC title and the games although so similar do play differently.

BC2 = awesome!
BF3 = awesome!

no matter what platform

kma2k4461d ago

Honestly you can compare every detail of these games but the basics are virtually the same. The real difference imo is Bad Company both 1 & 2 were fun the characters made the game fun. COD is so serious. If both COD 17 or whatever it is now & Bad Company 3 came out on the same day i would play BC first!

Hdz544461d ago

I expect the Respawn game to come out next Feb/March and BFBC3 to come out October 2013. EA is smart to establish their FPS franchises this gen and then keep the momentum going into the next gen.

Criminal4461d ago (Edited 4461d ago )

I hope DICE will have more time with BC3, not rush it next year just to compete with IW's 2013 Call of Duty.

Edited: @Hdz54 Sorry about that I meant to say Call of Duty 10, the one after Black Ops 2. Too many CoDs, hehe.

Hdz544461d ago

They won't be competing with BO2. It's going to be Medal of Honor: Warfighter vs. Black Ops 2 this Fall. Next year will be BFBC3 vs. MW4 or whatever Infinity Ward's next game will be called

Please, can Call of Duty leave awful Netflix-style menus behind

Call of Duty games used to be streamlined experiences, but COD 2024’s UI could be another nightmarish clutter of streaming tabs.

Let's just leave Call Of Duty behind.

anast16d ago

The isn't for you anymore.

BlackCountryBob16d ago

If we’re beating that drum, can we also stop forcing anyone who wants to play only the single player to download Warzone and all updates BEFORE they are then able to do another download from the menu of the single player campaign. I don’t see why I need 150gb of downloads in several ways to play the single player mode only from a bloomin disk which should have that campaign on it already.

DefenderOfDoom216d ago (Edited 16d ago )

The UI is confusing to me because I have not purchased a Call of Duty iin like 8 years .Only bought CoD MW3 because 3 of my friends I have known since to 70s are playing zombies . But I am used it now .

smolinsk16d ago

The UI is the least of the franchise many problems these days. But yes the UI is also terrible.

Players claim Fortnite ruined Call of Duty by letting in more corporate greed

Do you remember what gaming was like before Fortnite entered the gaming space? One of the biggest arguments was about loot boxes. Now we have conversations about crossovers, battle passes, and community outreach.

Idk. Loot boxes did disappear and battle passes and in game purchases are all cosmetic. We get free weapons and maps post launch, any gameplay affecting content. I could care less about all the cosmetics.
I absolutely hated the days where weapons were locked behind a less than 1% chance lootbox pull where it'd take 5+ hours to have enough tokens to do a single pull and lazy remastered/remake maps cost you $15 each wave or $50 for the season pass that you didn't know what you'd get and these maps were only available to those that bought it so you get a smaller pool of players match with.

Tacoboto27d ago

The "good ole days" are actually what drove me away from COD and Halo 3/Reach. Halo 4 becoming a COD-like drove me away from that only a week or so after it launched and I beat its campaign.

It sucked way back then, going a month or two without playing online-shooter-of-the-moment, and then needing to buy a $15 map pack to play with the majority of the population or your favorite playlist. The "community" rejecting Spartan Points in MCC killed that game's support, too. No revenue = no support, plain and simple.

Cacabunga27d ago

That headline could easily be something Spencer could have said 😅 I had to check if it was really an opinion piece

KyRo27d ago

As times gone on, the COD battle pass has got ALOT worse so they can push people to buy the more premium battle pass which itself is a huge rip off and nearly half the price of the base game.

The cosmetics can be fine but they've taken it to far to the point of no return. Why make a military themed game then have rabbits, dinosaurs, cats, rats & z list rappers as skins? You wouldn't add a Lamborghini to a fantasy RPG to replace a horse and you would never see Mario have limb dismemberment because they know what they are. COD is having identity crisis but kids and streamer but then all

franwex27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

Call of duty can simply not copy the bad aspects of Fortnite? Or is that too out of this world? Like COD, a realistic shooter-just HAD to have Nicki Minaj running around? Or super heroes?

Inverno27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

Exactly! Trends don't all need to be followed. Plus where Fortnite got somewhat better with it's monetization, Acti got worse. Or at least Fortnite has lended itself more to the wacky stuff, and has put more effort and quality into that stuff.

jjb198127d ago

I prefer the battle passes with free maps than the $50 season pass that divided the community. I definitely feel that Fortnite had some influence on CoD having loot boxes with Blackout being introduced in 2018 with Black Ops 4.

PRIMORDUS27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

Actually Fortnite bullshit ruined Unreal Tournament. Epic are sellouts and I will never have that shitty store on my PC, fuck them and that shit bag Tim Sweeney. At least the community keeps the games alive, I still play UT2004.

StoneTitan26d ago

I mean cant really blame them for supporting the game that made them the most money and the most people player...ever?

Psychonaut8527d ago

Call of Duty ruined Call of Duty. They needed no outside assistance.

Ra303026d ago

100% correct! The makers of Call of Duty ran out of ideas long, long ago so they take ideas from other games like Ghost Recon, Fortnite and any other FPS game hat had success hell CoD remasters maps that they've remastered several times already then charge you again for it. Call of Duty is simply a cut, copy and paste and then put the $70 price on it every year. Activision and now Microsoft has been essentially remastering Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare every year since it was released in 2007 its to the point it's worse than the sports game like the Madden, NBA and others yearly sports franchises.
@Psychonaut85 is spot on "Call of Duty ruined Call of Duty. They needed no outside assistance"!
