While the possibility of bringing Killzone back to a larger audience is certainly heartwarming, doing so under the “PS2 Classics” label is a self-defeating initiative. Killzone, brilliant as it was, cannot be re-released with the same code it was made of seven-and-a-half years ago. It needs an HD remake, arguably moreso than any other PS2 game that has thus-far received such treatment.
The first Killzone game never met lofty expectations of dethroning Xbox’s Halo, but if any game needs a PS5 remake, this is the one.
I like Halo, but I don't think there is any need for a 'Halo Killer' at this point. If anything, the franchise is slowly undermining itself by making some of the dumbest mistakes possible. Infinite has finally reached a good point in terms of multiplayer, but it took an extra 2 years to get there. Meanwhile, the single-player experience is fine but rather mediocre when compared to the franchise peak.
That said, I would like to see the Killzone franchise back, if anything, to offer more variety to the PS5 exclusive catalog.
I'd love a killzone trilogy, fully remastered on a single disc like they did with Uncharted. Maybe they could make it the full killzone saga including PSP and Vita games converted to console.
I've never liked the idea of a 'franchise killer', why can't both thrive, without one killing off the other? Its such a childish mentality.
That being said, if there ever was a true 'Halo killer', then it would have to be 343 Studios, and the Xbox division. They're doing a fine job killing off their own IP, apparently.
Halo doesn't need to be killed, they've done that themselves. It's a shell of its former self.
The Killzone series has been dormant since Shadow Fall, but a live service style for its multiplayer might just be exactly what it needs to succeed.
It will fail as a live service. An attractive reboot is required. Sony needs a strong first party FPS.
Hell no.
Just remake KZ2 keep gameplay the same and it'll thrive, I'm sure of it.
oh hell no!!!!, look at Halo it sure is thriving lol, Killzone only needs a good story, heck you could even leave the graphics visual style of Shadowfall cause up to this day still looks freaking amazing.
Shadowfall was such a drop off from KZ 2/3. I wish they could remake KZ2; with the weight feel also.
With the future of Killzone in question, it leaves a hole that might not be easily filled in PlayStation's first party line up.
Same goes with Resistance another great title that has been shelved.
The lack of 1st party multiplayer titles is shocking, i was bleak even on PS4 compared to PS3:
Killzone 2,3
Warhawk, Starhawk
Socom Confrontation and Socom 4
Motorstorm 1,2
MAG
Twisted Metal
Resistance 1,2
MGO2
TLOU (multiplayer)
Uncharted 2,3 (multiplayer)
The list goes on and on.
I get that they are great at 1st party single player experiences, but the appeared abandonment of multiplayer enabled titles (or even news of, for that matter) is pretty miserable.
No it doesn't leave a hole it makes room for something else. Cool doom and gloom article though.
They can't work on new games and try new things? I doubt Killzone is gone forever, but I'd rather they work on new potential franchises, and when they do go back to Killzone, they'll have fresh, new ideas.
I don't know what's so brilliant about killzone 1
Killzone 2 marked the franchise fame and truly was epic.
Killzone1? Mediocre sauce.
I kind of agree. KZ2&3 are some of the best games I've played, but I own the original Killzone, and it's a steaming POS.
We may find new fans of the franchise jump on KZ1 only to be taken back by how awful it is (AI, glitches, lack of fun). Hopefully it won't tarnish the franchise.
I played KZ1 on the PS3 BC and it was damn fun except for the sniper rifle....
KZ1 really need a remake / anniversary version
I remember the first level in the trenches being fun, but I never even bothered to finish the rest of the game.
I might get it for the story. But it would be nice to have it run with the current KZ3 engine. After all, the story and assets are already in place. And SONY has a LOT of other studios who could really use a hand in the PS3 market.
