Minecraft vs. Terraria

"People need to understand that Minecraft isn't a game anymore," claimed Andrew "Redigit" Spinks, creator of indie hit Terraria, "it's a genre." Of course, he could have merely been defending his own creation against accusations of being a Minecraft clone. But I think he has a point. A quick glance through the most popular games on Xbox LIVE Arcade will make it pretty clear that Minecraft is no longer the only blocky sandbox building game out there.

I don't think the guy has to worry about Terraria being a clone of Minecraft....just a game which got inspiration from it.

Now FortressCraft....THAT's a clone

Anyway I know your basicaly comparing a 2D game to a 3D game but the updates to Terraria are amazing, you always get so much more out of them then the updates to Minecraft. The 1.8 update is good but I still feel like Minecraft is empty while Terarria adds a ton of stuff to find, craft or mess around with. In terms of updates and content Terraria always wins.

I think FortressCraft has moved too far forward to still be called a "clone". If you really want a legitimate clone of Minecraft, go play Total Miner (XBLIG) or SurvivalCraft (WP7).

With regards to the article; "A quick glance through the most popular games on Xbox LIVE Arcade will make it pretty clear that Minecraft is no longer the only blocky sandbox building game out there." That statement is very untrue. There are no voxel games in the XBLA. Also, Minecraft did not create the genre, it just made it more popular.

So wait... Does the article say "Minecraft is no longer the only blocky sandbox building game out there"?

Or does it say "Minecraft is no longer the only voxel game out there?"

Because, last I checked, "blocky sandbox building game" was a pretty good description of FortressCraft and Total Miner, whether they're voxel games or not...

butcherboytoma4530d ago

MMMMMM ok so FortressCraft is a clone, ok i would love to hear what evidence you have to prove this theory, now remember Infiniminer was Minecraft's inspiration but we are not calling minecraft a clone of that, so taking this into consideration, please bring the evidence of said cloning on this post and we shall do what gynecologists do, have a bloody good look.

WhiteLightning4530d ago (Edited 4530d ago )

It's a clone of Minecraft

Infiniminer was inspiration to Minecraft when Notch made his own game out of it....now it's own genre.

Terraria did what Notch did to Infiniminer and Relogic then ended up with Terraria

To say FortressCraft is not a clone is ridiculous, theres tons of evidence it's basicaly the same with new bits and bobs added in....hell it's even got CRAFT at the end. I could go on

EDIT: Awwwww...someone is getting upset

butcherboytoma4530d ago (Edited 4530d ago )

Oh please do go on, this will show just how little you know about the game, like all the rest of the clone shouters, now please list the bits that are cloned please, oh and by your reconing Minecraft obviously cloned world of warCRAFT, which has the look, for a start. The name. The crafting.Levelling,XP,Most of the mobs are the same in both games, you can wear armour and wield weapons and you can mine ;)

Fortresscraft is a clone of Minecraft. I've never played Infiniminer though so IDK about Minecraft cloning Infiniminer in that aspect. Could be.

Shackdaddy8364530d ago (Edited 4530d ago )

They are 2 completely different games so you can't compare them.

Without trying to start a little war though, I do like Terraria more than Minecraft. Just because Terraria has more things to do...

soundslike4530d ago

terraria is more of a "game" for sure

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name51d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno51d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood51d ago (Edited 51d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno51d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure50d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.

Minecraft Bedrock Introduces Official Add-Ons To Marketplace

Minecraft Bedrock is introducing add-ons to the marketplace. The add-ons can now be added to many existing and new worlds.

Jin_Sakai71d ago (Edited 71d ago )

Nice! Next up, shaders on consoles.

“A new update is improving how mods work for Minecraft Bedrock. Mojang has introduced add-ons to the marketplace.”

“These add-ons can now easily be added to new and existing worlds instead of being tied to a single world.
There are plenty of free and paid add-ons that will let you customize just about anything in your world.”

OtterX70d ago

So RayTracing is no longer locked to the NVIDIA maps? I know there was a workaround, but it will be nice to have easier access to all worlds.
