But Is Grind Actually Fun?

Grind is found in a great many games these days, so much so that one could be convinced that it's all a part of the fun. But is that really true?

As a long time Dragon Quest fan, the answer is yes. Grinding is a lot of fun.

shinoff218379d ago (Edited 79d ago )

I also like grinding in rpgs. I get it it's not everyone's tea but when I see level caps and things of that nature it turns me off. I'll come home from work and just be beat, so I just run around grinding. I'm using dq11 as my example because it was brought up.

The article brought up persona 3 reloaded. Idk what to tell you. I'm glad it's like that.

Themba7679d ago

Not when the grind exceeds 15hrs a day then it’s worse than a full time job

GoodGuy0979d ago (Edited 79d ago )

If the results in the end are good and it isn't insane then yes. Although persona 3 reload could...use a money reward boost lol.

Ataraxias79d ago

Just get the rare enemy fortune before you go to Tartarus. Haven't ever struggled for money because of it.

SDuck79d ago

depends how it's done. If it offers you the chance to enjoy the combat for longer than the campaign does without wearing it down, then the grind is fun asf

TheColbertinator79d ago

If the combat has enough variety yes. Like P3R or LaD Infinite Wealth

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League - Developer Update - April 26th

Rocksteady writes: "In this week’s Developer Update we are going to show some of the gameplay changes we have planned for Episode 2. From looking at both our own internal data, and from listening to community sentiment we’ve worked on a series of improvements that we believe will make for a better experience in terms of hunting for new gear, fighting Brainiac’s forces, and overall quality-of-life."

I don't know a single person playing this.

P_Bomb4d ago

Apparently you even have to grind to get the Joker. Lotsa questionable decisions in this one.

ChasterMies3d ago

Meaningless stat unless you tell us how many people you know.

Ninver3d ago

More than 50 on friends list. About 12 in person. Not a single one of them is playing this.

Days Gone? I love Days Gone.

solideagle14d ago

I think I platinumed it, It was awesome especially the first time you come across the horde

peppeaccardo13d ago

One of the best open world zombie game ever. Very engaging great story graphics and all.
These mofo should go back playing starfield and change phil's diaper.
GFYS!!

thorstein14d ago

The Order 1886 wasn't disappointing.

It was great.

Maybe do an article about Games Journalists Lied About. That would be a good read.

FPSRUSSIA14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

I Agree The order 1886 is Great but Short to bad there wont be a Sequel since the Developers Moved on to other Platforms.

DustMan14d ago

I thought it was great while it lasted. As soon as things got interesting and the action picked up the game ended. When it was over I legit was like "that's all of it?"

jimb0j0nes14d ago

Sure, the campaign was terrible, but MW3 isn't even the top three most disappointing COD games...

anast14d ago

That's a lot of Bethesda games on that list. Where's Starfield?

TwoPicklesGood14d ago

Whole lot of Sony games with Forsaken, Days Gone, Risen of the Ronin, and The Order 1886.

anast14d ago

In reality only one of those Sony games is actually just okay, and the others are good to solid. Whereas the Bethesda ones are objectively bad.

Tacoboto14d ago

Two of those Sony games aren't Sony games and the two that actually are, Sony clearly agreed based on their cutting ties with longtime partner Ready at Dawn and their well-reported rejection of DG2.

I'd like to check out The Order someday soon and see how it holds up since that style of shorter game fits my mood lately, but Forspoken was uniformly panned and RotR is a sign that Team Ninja needs to ease off the gas a bit to focus on quality over quantity.

Tacoboto14d ago

Suicide Squad being at number 2 or even in this list seems like a freebie - its existence alone was disappointing, I don't think many people actually had positive expectations for it near release.

Not having Starfield at all feels like they're ignoring a huge conversation of last year. Even as someone that likes the game, ignoring its reception is head-in-the-sand at best and its restrictions were magnified by its release alongside Baldur's Gate 3. The disappointment many feel about it FARRRRR exceeds any disappointment people have for random third party titles like... Biomutant, and Exoprimal... Same could be said for reception around Forza Motorsport.

Persona 3 Reload, Like a Dragon Success Proves The Viability of Turn-Based RPGs

Nameer from eXputer: "With Persona and Like a Dragon, SEGA delivers a bold middle finger to the idea that turn-based games are outdated and I couldn't be happier."

Barlos20d ago

I love RPGs and spent 151 hours with Infinite Wealth. Currently playing through Rebirth and Reload, and I have to say I'm far more engaged with Reload because I prefer the turn based combat. I'm not a fan of the real time combat in Rebirth. If the game and story wasn't so good, I likely wouldn't entertain it at all. I much prefer turn based games.

CrimsonWing6920d ago

As someone who prefers turn-based I’ve real-time, I can definitively say I would choose Rebirth’s battle system over everything. It’s the perfect fusion of turn-based and real-time and I get. Rush using it over turn-based. That being said I do like the turn based for Infinite Wealth.

Barlos20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

I agree, even over 150+ hours I never once found the combat in Infinite Wealth a chore, I loved every minute of it. I can't agree with Rebirth's system though. There's something about it that just doesn't click with me. I prefer pure turn based combat for sure. That's why I also enjoy Persona's combat so much - in particular P5 Royal. With all the Persona fusing options it adds a lot of depth, and you really can create the perfect Persona for you.

shinoff218320d ago

Same thing, nostalgia and story. My biggest issues in rebirth are combat, and not being able to talk to npcs.

VersusDMC20d ago

Persona 3 reload and infinite weath boasts sales of 1 million at launch on multiple platforms.

https://www.ign.com/article...

https://personacentral.com/...

And Rebirth launched to 2 million which is seen as concerning on one platform.

https://www.pushsquare.com/...

Why is it more viable to make turn based games when they sell half as much?

Theses articles should at least highlight turn based games that sell the same or more than non turn based games to make a coherent argument. Like Pokemon or Honkai Star Rail.

Ironmike20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Rebirth sales are do wn there's multiple articles stating it hasn't sold as well I don't y game is fantastic but it hasn't done was well hope they do 3 as spent a lot time on both remake and rebirth but I like both turn based and live action

raWfodog20d ago

The author acts like turn-based RPGs are a dying genre. Recent successful games such as Octopath Traveler series, Sea of Stars, the Trails series, Honkai Star Rail, and Baldurs Gate 3 (mentioned in the article) would prove that there is still market out there hungry for them. I’m blessed enough to love both turn-based and action rpg games.
