Kaz Hirai: "Thank you Microsoft"

Sony chief thanks MS for paving the way forward online - where he believes PS3 and PSP will ultimately take the laurels. Sony America's Kaz Hirai has gone on the post-E3 record with US newspaper the Mercury news, and chief amongst his musings on the next-gen battle is an acknowledgement that Microsoft has led the way into online, preparing gamers for what the PS3 will eventually be able to offer.

Although it's widely conceded that Microsoft has built a significant advantage with its Live service which is now to be extended through Live Anywhere to embrace 360, PC and next-gen mobile phones, Hirai seemed unperturbed by MS's lead. When questioned, Hirai seemed blissfully unconcerned saying, "Thank you, Microsoft, for helping us in taking consumers online."

Hirai continued, "The most important thing for us is to make sure online is an integral part of the experience. It's not a 'nice to have' feature. It enables new businesses. But we do want to make sure that we have the content for both online and offline."

PS Ken 6 million Live users is a substancial amount, more than World of Warcraft, and World of Warcraft has been driving the gaming industry for over a year, and Blizzards profits are up 109%. We all know Sony is shaking in its boots. Even though The Console and gaming division was the only part to post a gain last period of report amongst a company that is rapidly sinking, they are waiting and hoping the ps3 will go over like hot cakes. They can't make em fast enough based on their E3 presentation... 2 million, then 2 million, then 2 million.. 6 million in 4 months which will sell out i am sure worldwide. A free online system, the vast reason you pay for XB Live is so they can expand their service (read xbox 360 uncloaked...it tells all about how they run Xbox live) SOny is not going to eat the costs of running a masssive online community to include servers, bandwidth, infastructure and support teams without making money with massive advertising in the system. Even then I don't think it will be close to XBLIve, not that Sony is stupid, they aren't they are just arrogant and many many people won't question them they will follow along as a herd member without question. If PS3 does not essentually "rescue" Sony in the next year this Kaz guy will be gone quick. The fact they spent billions to make a new technology when all MS had to do was goto Intel and IBm and say what do you have like 2 years down the pipe and they got a 3 core, 6 process processor for cheap, and were offered a 6 Ghz processor also. Good luck online Sony I think you will feel the sting of a company that does to online very very well.

Can't anyone see the "tongue in cheek" nature of this comment? Of course he's semi-joking here, but he can also be somewhat serious because Microsoft has proven that you can make a unified network , one gamertag, etc. and that it will work. Xbox live didn't do anything that PC multiplayer didn't do prior, it just make it easier to "plug and play." Also, multiplayer had never been done well on a console previously.

I whole heartedly disagree with you comment that MS didn't do anything that the PC hasn't. One of the main reasons why I prefer Xbox live over the online PC market is the relative lack of cheating that goes on. Sure there was a limited amount of it in games like Halo 2 it is miniscule compared to the rampant cheating that goes on in PC games. This problem has for the most part been fixed with the new 360 hardware.

The other reason why xbox live is greatly superior to the pc online is the controlled environment. Everyone who plays is required to have a decent connection and so lag issues are minimized. I haven't even begun to mention all the other benifits though these will be muted somewhat with live anywhere. The bottom line is that online experience on the 360 is vastly better in my opinion than the on the PC and as such is an definate improvement over what you get in that space.

Whether their online service is equivalent to or surpasses Xbox Live in my opinion is not even an issue to who will "win" this generation. It comes down to how many people will be able to afford playing on the damn thing. I do believe that the initial batch or so of PS3s will sell like hot cakes but after the smoke clears, how many regular joes are seriously going to walk into a store and drop $800 or so. Not this gamer. Previously, I have enjoyed getting all the systems for love of games and not a brand name, but this price is just a bit steep. Would I like to be driving a Hummer, Probably, but for now, my Durango is doing the same thing at a much lower cost.

First the "regular" console will be 500 and the "Big-Boy" console will be 600. Second people will get what they want no matter the cost. Just look around you, how many cars do you see with shinny rims (I see 18" and up on hoopties") Look at the cell-phones, 360's in cars with DvD players and all that.

It's called keeping up with the Jones's and being up with the trend. The first hit rap song with the PS3 in it will be on the radio exposing it, and in some cases overexposing it.

Why do you people think that the "average joe" in this country is so damn poor? Please be reasonable its not about them seeing more games on 360 its's when they go to Best-Buy and have to wait in line and jump over crowds to get a peek at the ps3, let alone get some playtime.(btw, same goes for wii). It's not a beyond belief situation that because the 360 has been out for so long it will have become "old news" and the rush/excitement from the holidays will be the launch pad for the ps3 and wii to push past the 360 by simply overshadowing it.

Firstly, I know the regular console will be 500 and the big boy console will be 600, But truely the one to get is "the big boy " one. When I stated 800$ I was adding in tax and a game or two. Maybe an extra controller if mommy and daddy are feeling generous. Now, I don't know what part of the world you live in but I teach high school in a blue coller district and I say it again, 800 is a little bit expensive for the "Average Joe" to afford on a VIDEO GAME console. Every student I have would like to get one but only one has actually said He's going to get it (although now he is having second thoughts, his mother laughed at him when she found out the price) and every one else said they won't pay that much. And in their free time, they would surf the web to see what new technical wonderments they could install for their beloved pc. Then the xbox came out, so being owned by microsoft, they made the slow transistion between pc to xbox. These days xbox fans still have their favourite past-time inside them, so now and then (every hour of the day) they'll fire up their pc and gun down any comments whatsoever about their biggest rivals, the playstation; even if the articles and comments make much sense.

...or as most companies see it, free R&D. In the business world, companies will do whatever it takes to make money. That's just reality. Toyota, which I'm sure we can all agree is one of the largest and most respected auto makers in the world, always "stoops" to "copying". They are never ones to just jump in the water, but would rather wait and see the reaction of the people that do. Same thing here. Sony may have been able to come out with a motion sensing controller at an earlier date but what if people didn't buy into it? They may have also been able to come out with a stronger online service but once up, what direction should it be headed? Why do all the R&D for online structuring, when only a small percentage of consumers would take part in it? Better to just wait and see what the competition does and see the reaction from their consumers. Just like Toyota and hybrids. Now that Toyota has let Honda and BMW test the waters, it't time to jump in. And guess who's ahead in that game now...

Your statements imply that the two respective online experiences are the same and that the only difference is that MS is charging where Sony is not. Bull! The fact is I am overjoyed to be able to play the paltry sum of $49.99 (per year) in order to play in a relatively lag free environment and with cheating kept to a minimum. The value of xbox live online gaming isn't even in dispute. It is clearly the best online experience out there. A simple look at the quality of the PS2 vs Xbox online gaming experience should illustrate this to you beyond a doubt. If Sony does not implement something similar to the controlled xbox live online gaming environment than it is going to be doomed to the same mediocre online gaming experience from the past. End of story.

At least the HD-DVD add on drive is one of good quality where is known that the PS2 had a sh*tte DVD drive which goes kaput all the time.

The original PS2 drive was junk. It was a subpar DVD player compared to the higher quality of DVD players being produced even by Sony. And it did break. A lot. All of my friends who were early adopters had problems. Not a few, but all. Understandably, that is not a real random sampling, but at least 20 people with broke PS2's? The only fanyboy-ism there was those of us that bought more than one.

I think the assumption is that we will have the same subpar quality Blu-ray drive in the PS3. But like you said, we don't know that, yet. But I would bet on it.

Blu-ray is techincally superior to HD-DVD, but the price, however, is not. Blu-ray has a lot of sweet functions, but not enough to make up for the 500 dollar difference in the low end models.

Replying to your last comment first, because can you think of any other reason? At the time of the 360's launch, it was the same time when ps3 had its incredible e3 2005 trailers lingering in the air, so any playstation gamer would look at the comparisons between both and think, 'im sticking with playstation'. Any people who bought the 360 in my eyes bought it because:

A) They were a previous xbox owner but mainly...
B) Because it came out first. Not because it has anything that beats the ps3, just because it was released a year before the ps3.

To your other comments, the other mediums WERE superior yes, so as a gamer, i dont know why you're dissing the blu-ray. If the 360 had a blu-ray drive, you would be sticking up for it just like i am, so be a bit more open minded and not just sticking up for the 360's crappy inferior hardware. I didn't see in your comment anywhere, saying that the cd was a failure either.

And the ps3 has a little more going for it then the original xbox did.

-It's got a huge fanbase
-It's got noticebly superior hardware (you'll see that in the future, believe if you will or won't)
-It has a great selection of new and established games that most people know and love
-It's got a blu-ray drive already installed in it while the 360 just has a dvd-drive

I realise to an xbox gamer, none of this matters and they only see the downsides to everything the ps3 has, but realistically, it is crammed with great technology, has a wide array of great games to back it up and when the general public see what features the ps3 has, even though it is expensive, they are sure to be impressed with the ps3 as a console

The $500 price tag will definitely turn consumers away, no doubt about that. But that wasn't the point, right? It was 'where are the fans?' Well if the majority of PlayStation owners (Fans?) don't read stuff like this or follow the industry, then that's still tens of millions of people who are probably looking forward to PlayStation 3 simply because it's the next PlayStation. We'll see how much the price turns them off when the time comes.

it's just a shame more of them arn't made the hybrid SACD's work as a normal cd as well but cd's are just to dominate a format just like dvd will be, did anyone else know that the 360 play's SACD's it will also rip them to the HD as an SACD as well

The pricing on both the PS3 and the 360 Premium are high. I as worried about the PS3 pricing the casual gamer out of the market though. We never look at the big picture , this is first and foremost a gathering of the hardcore. Haven't any of you ever been over someones house with the PS2 sitting under the TV a with 3 games ( Madden , NBA 2K and a GTA game here in the States ) you know the casual gamer. The people that went out to purchase a PS2 or XBOX after 1 or even 2 pricedrops. These people are NOT going to purchase a 500 or 600 dollar system with games , it's not going to happen. The market will shrink this generation. The point I am trying to make is the casual base is very important to the market. Remember the market crashed before under very different circumstances in the 80's. A crash like that will never happen again but a huge drop in user base from the most popular video game generation ever will hurt badly and should be expected. I would like to see what happens to alot of smaller publishers when the dust settles from 600 video game machines. The only bit of advice I gan give from someone gaming since Atari and Colecovision is please drop this name brand loyalty if at all possible. Go with the gaming system you like if you can't purchase them both. There really is no shame in playing a 360 if you like it but you owned a PS2. There is also no shame in buying a PS3 if you already have a 360. The zealot attitude of fanboyism is bad for GAMERS , not bad for a certain company.

I love my 360 and was excited as hell about it. When I went to Gamestop at midnight to pick up my preorder my wife had to talk me into getting it , MY WIFE! I had the money but was getting cold feet about spending the cash. I game daily it wasn't going to be a waste of money , I just couldn't accept the 500+ I was about to spend. Some other gamers might have leaped at it , I had buyers remorse. So imagine me when and if I have to spend 700 DOLLARS!! PLUS on a PS3. I still don't know if it is worth it.

I am a gamer who just speak his mind. I was at gamestop here in NYC on 34th street. I had put a May or July ticket in for the 360. That night my friend and I was drinking and that Son of a B#tch left me there drunk in the rain. But I waited it out for 6 hours on nov 22 for the midnight release. Boy was I tired and drunk plus cold and wet that night. But I got my system my box had #1 on it and I did that same thing for the Dreamcast,PS2,PSP and the XBOX so I hope that tells other people that I'm a gamer nothing more, who loves his 360.

I think you have an excellent point. At the end of the day despite the critism Sony might take for copying MS's online service it really is the best thing to do. Obviously they should put their own spin on it. One of the main reasons I purchased a 360 is for the online component that is done so masterfully. I will not buy a PS3 unless they provide a similar service.

I need to see if Sony will have an online Home Base like XBOX Live. Right know they have the game devoloper handle the online , not as good , not as good.

There is nothing wrong with a preference , you know chocalate or vanilla , car or truck , Ford or Chevy. What is wrong is ruling out a console without giving it a chance because you are relying on name recognition even when the entire industry says look at these games and the potential of this machine. Why do you people think that the "average joe" in this country is so damn poor? Just look around you, how many cars do you see with shinny rims (I see 18" and up on hoopties) Look at the cell-phones, 360's, Ps2's in cars with DvD players and all that. 7 year old kids with PsP's and cell phones.

It's called keeping up with the Jones's and being up with the trend. The first hit rap song with the PS3 in it will be on the radio exposing it, and in some cases overexposing it.

Please be reasonable its not about them seeing more games on 360 its's when they go to Best-Buy and have to wait in line and jump over crowds to get a peek at the ps3, let alone get some playtime.(btw, same goes for wii). It's not a beyond belief situation that because the 360 has been out for so long it will have become "old news" and the rush/excitement from the holidays will be the launch pad for the ps3 and wii to push past the 360 by simply overshadowing it.

How many of those cars and goods are financed and be paid for over a large number of years, I live in Southern California and I can tel you.... ALOT of them. Its all about what you can show. I drive a piece of crap but you know what. Everything I own is paid for so when I do need a new one I won't be stretching myself into a 2nd mortgage forever to buy another car because of the 77" big screen I am paying 25% interest on and the rims, and the stereo, and the jewelry, etc. etc. ad nauseum. Most Americans spend way beyond their budgets because they can charge it. I paid cash for everything I own but about 10 things. And I happen to live in one of the very nice neighborhoods in San Diego, and have a house back home in the midwest.

It's going to take one monumental piece of software that make gamers fall in love with it at one slight glance for Sony to topple over X-Box Live!

X-Box Live! IS the future of online gaming, and all Sony will do is copy it.

Now, if Sony copy X-Box Live!, slap a Sony sticker on it, and then provide everything, everything means free online gaming, updates, demos, trailers, arcade games, music tracks etc, all for free, then X-Box Live is in trouble.

BUT...that's not gonna happen. Sony say there online system will be free, but it won't. You'll have to pay for your online gaming experience, either to Sony or to the company of the game you buy from. Reason being, they have to employ staff to update, monitor and regulate online servers.

This is what you £40 a year is going to. To make X-Box Live better.

Sony won't be offering a free service, I can promise you all that. If there were offering a free totally online service, why haven't Sony come out and said it. That would be a major factor in selling there machine, yet the haven't, because they are not!

Live! will be here for a very long time. Especially with Gears of War and Halo 3 on the way, it will only strengthen with time!

I was a die hard fanboy to Sony. Actually I still am. But I am also the type of gamer who works hard to provide the funds to purchase new technology that I KNOW will be beneficial/recreational to me. I own a Nintendo,SNES,N64, SEGA GEN, SEGA DREAM, SEGA SAT,PS1, PS2, XBOX, XBOX 360, PSP, FIRST GEN GAMEBOY (the one that looks like a gray brick) GBA, and GBAsp; All in mint condition. Now as for the PS3 my main reason in wanting to buy it is to use it for exactly what it is...A NEXT GEN CONSOLE (not a PC) The negative emotions that I have with Sony/PS3 right now is obviously the price. I know that it contains a lot of new tech devices within it...but I still will not accept any justifications of the price until ONE FRIGGIN THING IS CONFIRMED...and this question is to all the gamers/fanboys alike...FOR 600+(cuz i know everyone would want the premium) FUGGIN DOLLARS!!! FOR ALL THAT FUGGIN MONEY!!! DOES THE PS3 DESTROY THE GRAPHICS OF THE 360??? I am not talking about small marginal superiority (i.e. xbox vs. ps2) Im talkin bout FIRST GLANCE NOTICE OF A DIFFERENCE IN GRAPHICS.
