5 Film-School Violations in Videogame Cut-Scenes

Videogame storytelling has made some astounding leaps over the past few years. Powerful narratives like Red Dead Redemption and Uncharted 2 have helped show the world that games can be just as meaningful as any other form of art.

But there's one element of interactive storytelling that designers just can't seem to get right: the cut-scene. Some exceptions exist, but these control-free cinematic sequences often prove uncomfortable if not downright embarrassing to watch. While they are almost always packed with gorgeous eye caramel, games' cut-scenes usually drop the ball when it comes to effective storytelling.

I was personally fully immersed with all the cutscenes and radio calls in MGS4. I wanted to know every bit of it. No need to cut them at all IMO.

coolbeans4628d ago

It's not really whether or not the writer of this article wanted all of MGS4's cutscenes or not. He's just pointing out that they're one of the rules film students are told when getting a [film] degree.

cogniveritas4628d ago

Trade schools teach you the methods about the way things are and people have been taught to accept those things. Those schools indoctrinate you into conformity and test the endurance of your personal creativity as you adhere to the "rules". But once you learn the rules, sometimes you need to be bold and rewrite what people will accept. Right and wrong in art can be formed by popular opinion and vice versa. Popular opinion can't belong to the old scholars forever.

Funny things is many successful movies do one if not all of the above . I'll keep caring about them over film school's pedestrian conformism

KentBlake4628d ago

I agree with almost everything in this article. I can't stand overlong, exposition-ridden cut scenes, especially in japanese games. Or, even worse, in kids games: my daughter can't stand Animal Crossing because those damn animals never stop talking! It takes ages to start playing.

That said, I love great cut-scenes, like the ones Blizzard does (and many other western developers too, not only on PC, of course). This is one of the areas where I think the West is winning...

tarbis4628d ago

LOL! As if hollywood don't do these things.

tiffac0084628d ago (Edited 4628d ago )

But the article failed to point out the differences in culture. Not everyone around the world follows the same standards.

So I think that its a little bit unfair if you take something from a different region and dissect it using someone else standards. You have to understand first why they made it that way before you question it.

As for Kojima I doubt he'll listen. He's his own mad genius and we know mad geniuses follow their own norm and that's what makes them great.

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan54d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro82d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv7282d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_82d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga82d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos82d ago (Edited 82d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt2382d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball200082d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin82d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole82d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix82d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel198982d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor82d ago (Edited 82d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2
