Super Mario 64 is Overrated

Super Mario 64 is not the best game ever. It is not a great N64 game. It is not even a great Mario game. What it is, is a compromised game, hampered by technology.

Ridiculous. Super Mario 64 changed the gaming landscape forever - its clones still walk in its shadows. Nothing has went close since, not even Nintendo's succesor: Super Mario Sunshine.

LOL someone doesn't understand what made a game great in it's day and has managed to hold up over the years. I suppose you would have had to been around to understand that.

Disagree, I didn't like it that much as a kid, but I recently D/l it for Emulator again, it's great. I like repeating levels, because you're not even repeating them. You're going into a world with Stars in them. Get the stars. There are hidden ones, just hard ones to get(hated the one on top of the pyramid) or puzzle ones etc.

thugbob4647d ago

I agree that it is over rated, but I disagree with the statement that it's not a great N64 game nor a great Mario game.

Super Mario 64 is a great game period. It's just not the "best" when talking about N64 games in general or Mario games.

DarkCharizard_4646d ago

I disagree thugbob. Despite being a gaming masterpiece of its time, SM64 introduced us to the world of 3d gaming and it deserves all the credit it gets.

This article is also quite ignorant and stupid:

1. "Let’s start with the fact it’s easy. I mean really easy. There’s very little to no challenge in this game if you don’t count the awkward camera which I’m sorry, simply is nowhere near as interpretive or fluid as it should be."

Have u even played the f*cking game? I mean the final boss battle is hard as hell..!! And we're talking the first video game camera ever made, imo, its perfect for its time. The writer's just a child expecting a fluid camera system from a mid 90's game...

nuff said. I don't need to explain the rest.

thugbob4646d ago (Edited 4646d ago )

Super Mario 64 deserves all the credit it gets besides being called the best N64 game and the best Mario game. There are to many great N64 games to say that SM64 is the best of them all is all I'm trying to say.

firefoxprime4646d ago (Edited 4646d ago )

Honestly, I too disagree. SM64 was awesome. I definetely enjoyed the winged cap parts. I think the really overrated title is Ocarina of Time. People continue to believe OoT was the best game ever, yet I believe SuperMario64 is where it all started. Without SM64 you could kiss your GOW or Uncharted goodbye.

NESpower4646d ago

@firefoxprime

I understand what you mean by the truly revolutionary fact that Mario 64 was released years before Ocarina...but...Ocarina is highly revolutionary in insane amounts of gameplay innovations, deserves this praise, and far from overrated. Ocarina is still getting bought and praised as we speak. I hate this article because it's complete bullshit. Anyone who hasn't played Mario 64 yet agreeing with this article should seriously get punished by the gaming gods..lol. Mario 64 is a 10/10 and so is Ocarina. Hell..11/10...lol.

Compared to what please?

Upon it's release there was nothing like it as far as platform gaming goes.

Now to be so nit picky....all platform games have you jumping through hoops and collecting coins and sure it's the same story "princess Kidnapped" but the looks, game play, quality, and fun factor on Mario 64 were amazing.

i think the writers Gamer credibility is overrated!

Why is there a random guy butthurtly bitching about a 15 year old game

Spinal4646d ago (Edited 4646d ago )

I think Super Mario World (SNES) was the best Mario ever made. Followed by Mario 1 (NES) then Mario 64. My personal opinion. They were all amazing games for their time and are certainly not overrated at all.

I still play these games on my train trip to and from work on my xperia play. :)

One of my favorite games as a child.

Jio4647d ago

I actually agree. I like Banjo Kazooie much better :)
Still playing that game, just as fun as ever

Pozzle4646d ago

But without Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie might have never existed.
It didn't come out until two years after Mario 64.

CrimsonEngage4646d ago

Problem. It's an opinion. Second, authors opinion is wrong.

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Inverno6d ago

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.

Not with those D-pad controls

CDbiggen8d ago

Needs more appreciation. I never had an N64 so this was what I played. Sure the Yoshi hat mechanic at first is a slog but you unlock Mario and the others for real and then it takes off. Personally I never had an issue with the controls. Can't forget the mini games and the 4 player rumble over download play.

kevco338d ago

Indeed, as stated in the article there were tonnes of control options and very much a 'take whatever you like, leave the rest' attitude to most of the game's extras.
