PS3 80GB outselling 40GB SKU at Amazon

Sony Corp.'s 80GB Playstation 3 is outselling the new 40GB SKU in the latest retail data at Amazon.com.

On Mon., the 80GB PS3 SKU ranked at No. 24 in sales compared to the 40GB product at No. 34 in the Video Games division.

I dont' even know why people are buying PS3 right now! With all the price cuts that's been going on and all the big titles being delayed by this time next year PS3 is going to be $99. I'll wait till then to buy a PS3 and the big games will be out too!

Edit- Price drops that never happen eh? Hmm wasn't Sony saying that they are not going to drop the prices of the PS3 just 3 months ago? Then the last 3 months they've had two price drop(60GB drop and 80gb)two different SKUs introduced (80gb/40gb)... Seriously the way its going and how HD DVD is dropping its prices your going to see another price drop for the PS3!! Mark my words!.. We all know that Sony's agenda is to win the format war and who can blame them. I mean the movie industry is 10x larger than the gaming industry! I'm not hating on Sony for that! What I am hating on is how Sony used gamers to win the format war! I predict that's going to backfire on them so bad that they are going to end up selling their gaming division just like they did a month ago with some other components in their company. Actually its already backfiring... You just can't fight two wars fronts.. That's what brought Hitler down!

Well the ps3 is at a good price point right now. 400 bucks for a 40gig aint bad at all. as for as game go is has a pretty solid line up. uncharted haze time crisis and UT3 are all great games being release this year.

Amazon doesn't mean anything. Both those sku's are amazingly outselling the XBOX 360 on amazon.

It's probably because the 80gig has BC. The 40gig is still a great deal for those who don't care about BC. Both are outselling every 360 SKU, btw.

I went into Walmart yesterday and they has the PS3 and 360 out in the back ... not in a video games section and 30 people were watching Ratchet and laughing and enjoying it and therE WASN'T ONE PERSON THAT PICKED UP THE JUNKBOX 360 it was so funny!!!! There were about 30 people surrounding the PS3 with people stopping and watching the PS3. They are also sold out at my Wal-mart, Best Buy, Circuit city and Comp USA LOL LOL LOLLOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

and it was because of the BC availability. I don't want my shelf filled with two different playstations, it's one of the reasons you upgrade, so you can replace what is already on your shelf.

Plus 100 more gets you BC, several other features, plus MotorStorm....the deal is much better.

...people seem to always bring up ("50m ps2 owners just waiting to upgrade"), perhaps dropping the BC wasnt such a bad move for sony. the huge ps2 install base will probably buy the more expensive 80gb because of its larger space and BC.
where as, new comers to the playstation can buy the cheaper 40gb as there probably not hardcore gamers who want the space or need the BC, plus its cheap!

The people who are buying it online at amazon obviously are more tech savy in general than someone who buys it at a local store, so the 80GB is more attractive to the hardcore. I think and hope that the 40GB is selling better because it's a new sku and they have to keep the price at $400. $500 is too much for the casual market. Also Amazon isn't as good as it use to be once the casual people are buying the systems because the 360 outsold the Wii last month, but the 360 on Amazon was outsold by the PS3 in the bestsellers for half of the month and the 360 beat the PS3 by like 4 to 1, so Amazon is not a good representation anymore. The Wii is always at the top because obviously it's better to camp online and see when they're in stock then go out 6am in the morning to stand in line at a store.

Well the 80gb is a better deal.

it has 2 more usb ports
all of those card readers and sd slots
40 more gb
and a game with it.

So that is about $150 more in stuff ($100 diff), for 50$ less.

I thought the PS2 install base was 250 mil. not 50 mil. Believe me, there are a lot of PS2 fanboys out there that just couldn't afford the PS3 when it launched last Nov.

But now that its $200 less and has much more games. A lot of people are gonna buy it for Christmas. :)

40 Gig is for the people that have have no ps2 games....
60 Gig is for the ps2 fan base to come over ps3 and still play their ps1 ps2 and ps3 games. This is not a shocker to me. I believe in months sony will either release a firm ware or maybe a disc that can load ps2 games if they are not compatiable on the ps3 60Gig. Sony has never let me down so why would they start now? There is a reason why sony sold so many units its because their AAA customer service!
