Sonic Generations In-Depth Demo Impressions - GotGame

Today we are awaiting the fourth big Sonic game, Sonic Generations, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of this blue beast and is supposed to come out in November of this year. People got a chance to play Generations for the first time at this year’s E3, but Sega was kind enough to release a demo for the public on Xbox Live and Playstation Network so that literally everyone could get their hands on it and try it out. If anything, it shows that Sonic Team are pretty confident with their product this time around and letting anyone play the build so early isn’t just a way to validate all the positive feedback the game has been getting so far. Or is it?

I'm really hoping that this doesn't disappoint. Sonic games have lost their touch after Sonic Adventure.

rexbolt4703d ago

there a few better sonics then adventure hence colors and rush

I love this demo. It's amazing and what Sonic should have been. I think Sonic is finally back on track. Hope the rest of the game is as good as the demo.

There's something wrong about it. The physics aint right, i'm sorry.

REPLOID244703d ago

No, Sonic is not back. Sure, it looks great but that's about it. The controls suck and aren't too responsive...not like Sonic 2 or 3. I like the feeling of control that is in Sonic 2, particularly bouncing around in Casino Night (Sonic responds nicely to a touch of the d-pad.) Also, the formula of "hit a spring, run through a set up course, and stop to do it again is old.) It's saving grace would be to touch up the controls, and have some decent boss battles.

Very surprised nobody here has so far mentioned the very noticable drop to 30 frames. Perfectly playable still at this framerate but it's hard on the eyes and hurts the experience. Very fast side on 2d scrollers suffer at 30 and considering Sonic is just about the fastest of scrollers anyway, it's very much a blur. It's a very lovely looking game but mostly when you're not moving any. 30 frames is very acceptable in lots of games but for a 2d Sonic, one that's even faster now it seems, it's a shame is all

Generations over Mania? Please… Generations doesnt have any new ideas in the levels/bosses.

Also a top 7 of Sonic games shouldn’t have any 3D crap and contain at least one of the 8-bit titles.

Sonic CD getting snubbed is weird. Number 1 is definitely interchangable between Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Snookies12106d ago

Nothing wrong with putting Generations over Mania. Generations had a lot more to it. Mania was just a bit too short, despite how amazing it was. They're both top-tier Sonic games though.

Profchaos106d ago (Edited 106d ago )

I don't think mania was to short given 1,2,3, knuckles were between 1 and 3 hours long.

Mania was 5 hours roughly

However i say the originals feel more repayable because they are so short

Profchaos106d ago (Edited 106d ago )

The 8 bit games were pretty bad overall do you mean the 16 bit ones

Rebel_Scum106d ago

Nope. Sonic 1 & 2 on the master system were great. Dont confuse these with the game gear versions either.

Profchaos106d ago

Top 7 for me
7 cd
6 mania
5 Frontiers
4 sonic 3
3 sonic 1
2 sonic and knuckles
1 sonic 2

Sometimes I feel like the Sonic Advanced games just didn’t exist with how much it’s always forgotten 😭

Chocoburger105d ago

Even as a Sonic fan, I didn't really care for those games, and getting the Chaos Emeralds were freakin' horrible. Even with an emulator and save states, I didn't have the desire to try. I also didn't like most of the levels or bosses either. Unfortunately, DiMPs aren't good at making Sonic games.

Why the Separation Between Modern and Classic Sonic is a Double-Edged Sword

Sonic Handheld Games that Need Remasters after Origins

BLG writes: "With the success of the films and the promise of Frontiers, it’s possible that we’re ushering in a new golden age of Sonic the Hedgehog. While Sega is looking forward, the company is also looking back. It’s giving us Sonic Origins, a retooled collection of Genesis classics. However, this package fails to provoke a burning question: what’s the best Sonic handheld game?"
