New PS3 model does not have PS2 backwards compatibility

Neowin has updated their article on the new PS3 model having backwards compatibility:

"This looks to be a mistake with the translation, after all.

Member anemone states that the correct translation is as follows:

'This product is not compabile with "PlayStation 2" proprietary software.'

Furthermore, different translation tools give similar results to the above.

Bing gives 'This product compatible with PlayStation 2-only software has not.' and Yahoo's BabelFish gives 'This product “play station 2” has not had the compatibility of the private software.'.

There you have it, nothing to see here. Move along."

me looking at that picture, i honestly forgot PS2 had a disc tray

zootang4723d ago (Edited 4723d ago )

Yeah, disc trays seem so dated now.

@Below

What did I do?

@Kingdom

Even the Wii has slot loading and you know you are in an old car when it has a disc tray. Well the majority of NEW devices have slot loading for discs.

Kon4723d ago

I see what you did there.

kingdoms4723d ago (Edited 4723d ago )

As a ps fan?

98 percent of players have trays how does 2 percent of devices with loaders make trays seem dated? Disk loading is decades old. Slot loading was not mass adopted because there are greater risks for operational issues.

Edit

LOL disagrees. When ps3 launched there was a whole shipment of ps3s in Asia with slot loading issues where the disc was stuck in the ps3. Sony recalled them and when the media started reporting on it Sony had the story pulled 3 hours after it was reported; on some online news company.

Caleb_1414723d ago

It came across that you were ribbing the 360, but either way disc trays are dated.

Phantasm4723d ago

Both tray and sloted loading technology is dated. Yes, slot loading has been around for decades in car audio. I had an Alpine back in the 80's, and currently have another Alpine in my 4Runner.

As for trays... Most blu-ray players use the tray method, quite simple because they are more reliable. Oppo makes the best blu-ray players in the world, and they use trays.

Of course it doesn't have backwards compatibility. Sony isn't stupid, if people are forking over cash for games from last generation then it helps their bottom line out.

It's just smart business.

phoenixdown4723d ago

just like microsoft and xbox live right?

Raven_Nomad4723d ago

Why bring up Microsoft? Umadbro?

In reality they are totally different things, Microsoft never dangled free XBL in front of us. Sony said backwards compatibility would be a function of the PS3. They decided in a move to make money to take it out of the consoles, even though technically the PS3 can emulate PS2 games with ease.

So it's a money making decision and that's all there is to it.

Already have a PS3, I have FFXII that I really want to replay, but my PS2 is broken. Rather wait for the inevitable FF collection

4723d ago
Tuxedo_Mask4723d ago

There is no guarantee that there will be a FF HD collection, and rather than buy HD collections you can always just buy another PS2 since they're really cheap now. If you have a lot of PS2 games it really isn't a bad idea.

Max_Dissatisfaction4723d ago

Of course not, how will sony keep cashing in on HD re-releases otherwise?

Silly gameAr4723d ago

Seems to be getting pretty popular, because HD re-releases are spreading to a console near you.

Nes_Daze4723d ago

I still have my old PS2, probably the most reliable console I've ever played games on judging from all the things it has gone through. Therefore, I have no need for BC, I have a PS3 for PS3 games after all..

It's an outstanding game and so was The Old Blood. Also a lost era of gaming. Interesting, I received a physical copy of The Old Blood 9 years ago today from Poland. It was digital only in North America initially upon release so I had to import.

I disagree. Its still a fantastic game, with very good gunplay and a surprisingly loveable cast of characters and a good story trough many different and interesting setpieces

hiawa233d ago (Edited 3d ago )

All The New Order needs for my tastes is a this gen enhancement patch.

ChasterMies3d ago

I played New Order a couple of years after launch and I give it an 8/10. The shooter holds up because it is focused on being a good shooter. There is no crafting, no RPG elements, no open world find the question mark Weapons are fun. Enemies are fun. Levels offer a nice mix of stealth and shooting. You get to be the predator; this isn’t a game about fending off waves of enemies while a robot companion unlocks a door. Most importantly, New Order is the last of a dying breed of single player shooters.

Skuletor2d ago

Singleplayer shooters are still getting released every year, just look up "boomer shooters" and you'll find an an abundance of them. AAA fps campaigns, not so much.

Last year had Trepang2, RoboCop: Rogue City, Turbo Overkill, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, Dread Templar, Sprawl and more

DustMan2d ago

The games you mentioned are not from AAA developers. Wolfenstein likely had a budget that was probably as big as all those games you mentioned combined. I'm not knocking the new wave of retro shooters. I absolutely love them (I think some get much higher review scores than they deserve though). I just really wouldn't describe Wolfenstein as purely a boomer shooter based on the relatively cohesive story, with cut scenes and is fully voice acted. Full set piece moments.

AA development seems to be focused keeping the single player solo experience alive. But the big developers are only concerned about the MTX and milking players who enjoy multiplayer.

ChasterMies2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

The age of AA shooters. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing. I like less expense, shorter games.

Abear212d ago

Weird all the Wolfenstein articles.

Can you guess what will be announced at Xbox showcase?

DefenderOfDoom22d ago

What Machine Games did with Wolfenstein franchise is awesome. The game play definitely to me , is still very fun to play !!!
