Microsoft React to PlayStation Network Outage

The PlayStation Network issues currently plaguing gamers throughout the globe could not have come at a worse time. Not only are there a number of high profile titles arriving on retail shelves, but also in the UK it’s a Bank Holiday weekend, meaning there was likely to be a large number of gamers heading online. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) have been reluctant to discuss the issues any more than is absolutely necessary, however things are a bit different in the Microsoft camp.

Free Xbox Live weekend is awesome like the below vid.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Edit: I don't like Halo either and I think the fight scene is Chuck Norris worthy.

Perkel4771d ago

i don't like halo but daaaaamn that was awasome :)

Sheikh Yerbouti4771d ago

That was only half of the video...

*Spoilers*

Samus shows up after Master Chief gets done and the awesome becomes epic.

Google Monty's Oum's Haloid - I have had it on one of my three PSP's but I forgot which one.

Blad3star4771d ago (Edited 4771d ago )

Holy BBQ Sauce Sheikh - that is officially the most awesome video I have ever seen.

So much EPICNESS!!!!!!!!!

Bubbles

PhoenixDevil4771d ago

Yup good ol Monty oum, if you lyk that - Haloid but prefere final fantasy/dead or alive then search Dead Fantasy its epic

Panthers4771d ago

Thats not the entire video. You didnt get to see the crazy sniper shot that ricochets and kills everything.

Kushan4771d ago

That's not the full video, this is:

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

It's called "Haloid" Because it features both Master Chief and Samus. But even if you don't like either game, it's a great video.

Sharingan_no_Kakashi4771d ago

Monty Oum made that vid. the original title is haloid. If you liked that you'd prolly like his dead fantasy videos too. Final Fantasy vs dead or alive girls. He got recognized for these vids a couple years ago. I think he got a job at Midway or something. Still waiting on him to finish up the Dead Fantasy vids.

Bibmiester4771d ago

O M G that was stupid awesome!

Parasyte4771d ago

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, Monty now works for RoosterTeeth doing all of their motion capture work on RvB.

TheDeadMetalhead4770d ago (Edited 4770d ago )

Maturity? In MY Microsoft?

At some point after PSN went down, I must have slipped into a parallel universe, given the events that have happened to me over the last couple days.

MaxXAttaxX4770d ago (Edited 4770d ago )

not Halo.
_____

[On topic]
This down time has allowed me to focus on other non multiplayer games.

I gotta admit, it's been refreshing so far.

Rumor4770d ago

that vid is called Haliod

I always use down time to catch up on trophies from story modes. In fact, I got my first platinum because Verizon cut my internet access off. I was forced to platinum a game. Guess I'll work on Socom 4 story trophies.

GodsHand4771d ago

LOL, you were forced to platinum a game.

outwar60104771d ago

LOOOOOOOOOL comment of the day

xDaRkModEx4771d ago

That's reasonable. I did the same with burnout paradise.

Zeevious4770d ago

LOL...great way to turn a problem into a positive!

I'm not minding having to pick up a few extra trophies myself, and I will give credit to Microsoft.

They've handled this very well, and I'm glad they are supporting Sony.

Whomever did this, you are attacking not Sony but Gamers everywhere!

I think it's time for another donation drive...but this time for a worthy cause -- To turn in whoever is responsible.

Let's see how l33t these losers are in jail for these attacks!

TheDeadMetalhead4770d ago

At least you get to play yours. My PS3 YLOD'd yesterday (no, really, I shit you not), so now I don't get to play mine at all until I fix it...And my saves aren't backed up except for GT5...And Modnation is still trapped in the Blu-Ray drive...And my warranty is void because I already opened it before to clean it...

Zeevious4770d ago (Edited 4770d ago )

DeadMetal...

Really sorry to hear that!

If you already opened it though, you should be able to open it again and trigger the release directly from the Blu-Ray drive.

That will at least get your disc back.

I repaired a friends console using the solder-re-flow method, but it's very very tricky. http://www.youtube.com/watc...

I wish there was something more I could do to help out...I hate to see anyone missing out on having fun gaming!

I actually expected a more immature response, that was handled better than I thought it would be.

Live goes down also, so they only have so much room to talk. As such, I'm glad to see they remained within that room. I was gonna hate on them when I first saw the article, but I'll leave em' alone over this one.

This is only the second time I've seen PSN go down for more than a day. The other time was that leap year bug when PSN was shut down for all of April 29th.

whydoyouask4771d ago

When did Xbox live go down?

PirateThom4771d ago

December 2007, Christmas Weekend.
Feburary 2010, access issues.

It happens, no service can have 100% uptime. The BBC website went down the other week for a few hours.

Dark_king4771d ago

@fr0sty technically the leap year bug was a system problem not psn. This is the first real issue I can remember with psn.I to expected a immature response like "you get what you pay for".

whydoyouask4771d ago

@PirateThom

Oh, okay.

Also, why would i be disagreed with? I was just asking a question... V^V

Dark_king4771d ago

@whydoyouask it went out a few times but christmas is the big one I remember.

fr0sty4771d ago

feb. 29th I mean... lol

guigsy4771d ago

When Xbox Live went down during Xmas 07 they gave everyone a free XBLA game.

outlawlife4771d ago (Edited 4771d ago )

also on 2007 the outage was regional some people didn't have any problem

I didn't have any issue accessing live at that time

live has not had an outside technical problem like this, the 2007 issue was an overload

jdoggystyyle4771d ago

On xmas day 07 I was having trouble signing on to play COD 4, but later that night when less people were playing I was able to play COD 4 online with no problems at all. It wasnt down, it was slamed with people and people were having connection issues.

Theres a difference between not being able to log on because there are so many people online already, and NOONE BEING ABLE TO GET ON AT ALL.

Xmas of 07 live was slammed with people, causing connection problems. It was still up tho, I played COD4 that night.

radphil4771d ago (Edited 4771d ago )

@PirateThom

Just don't bother with them. The site's community is going downhill so badly with this silent disagree crap going on. People think that the SLIGHTEST negative situation and they think you're attacking "their favorite company".

Too many spoiled kids that think they're entitled to stuff now a days.

radphil4771d ago

It's funny, cause those disagrees right there in my last message just follows DIRECTLY under what I was talking about.

evrfighter4770d ago (Edited 4770d ago )

lol poor thom.

well you get what you pay for.

fr0sty4770d ago (Edited 4770d ago )

"you get what you paid for" goes both ways, don't it? When you don't pay for Live, what do you get? No online gaming. None. Not when it launched, not now... at least with PSN, we've had 4 solid years (with one down day during the leap year bug) until now without interruption. And guess what, we only paid for the system itself. Talk about getting what you paid for!

We paid for a system that would allow us to play every aspect of our games that we pay full price for, and we got it! not a system that locks you out of half of your game because you haven't paid another fee on top of the fee you paid for the console and on top of the fee you paid for the game.

When an Xbox owner buys halo, gears, or COD... they're not buying it just for the single player. So, they're not getting what they paid for unless they pay again. Just sayin'.

rockleex4770d ago

It sucks right now to only have a PS3. So many games just got released and the thought of not being able to play any of them at all during the weekend sucks.

Here's hoping to Sony fixing the issue (today) BEFORE the weekend begins.

moparful994771d ago

Play them offline.. Its not a huge deal, don't be so melodramatic you sound like an emo teenage kid...

evilmonkey5014770d ago

I'm playing through Homefront and Enslaved (15bucks!) at the moment...And I own an xbox. ;)
You should just catch up on trophies during the downtime.

ZBlacktt4770d ago

Just can't play online. Which is not the end of the world at all. Play any single player game mode and enjoy....

the_best_player4771d ago

To bad normal halo gameplay is boring compared to the video lol.

pixelsword4770d ago

Not so much classy as professional. Microsoft and Sony have no real rivaly; if the opportunity arises, they would both team-up and enslave everyone.

Sam Fisher4770d ago

if any company should get attacked for their betrayals should be microsoft, i mean cmon. they f#@% you over with console limitations, hardware, raising up the price on gold, every little they get their hands on, you have to pay. if anyone should get attacked it should be microsoft, not sony. even this article states that they are a greedy company, sony online is down and xboxlive is free for the weekend, really? wow, how ironic.....-_-

Great time for a Free Xbox Live weekend! Maybe some of those gamers who own both consoles but don't have a Gold XBL membership will get to see what they are missing?

I know it's got to be tough if your an online gamer to have your service not working, I cant ever remember anything like this in the past, granted I don't use PSN often but I found it odd when I went to sign in that I could not.

Something tells me we are not hearing the whole story. With some nice titles coming out this week, I'd hate not to be able to game online.

mendicant4771d ago

You make a good point in your second paragraph. I use PSN a decent amount at least I used to, either way not nearly as much as I'm on XBL. At any rate, my point was that I have had issues in the past but nothing like this with PSN. This sucks. I went to play some Killzone 3 this morning and was shocked to still find the service down.

Here's to hoping Sony gets this ironed out soon.

Vherostar4771d ago (Edited 4771d ago )

know what there missing free online gaming thats it! The rest of things like sky and netflix need and extra paid subscription and well facebook.. lets not go there yeah??? I own a 360 and trust me there not missing much. Its great though this weekend as my mate can play fable 2 online co-op with me as he refuses to pay for XBL.

Raven_Nomad4771d ago

Well I guess we can agree to disagree, I could sit here and drone on with lists of reasons why XBL is amazing, but I know how this site is and honestly I don't want to waste time typing about it.

I love the Dishonored series so much and really want Dishonored 3. Microsoft better not screw this up.

JEECE16h ago

I mean, I think the fans will probably kill Arkane Lyon by cooking up reasons to hate whatever they do next without playing it. I've never seen a game so artificially disliked as Deathloop.

thesoftware73016h ago

Lol, why don't we just say, we are worried about all studios owned by MS now. They will keep closing studios until they have none left ...🙄

Skuletor13h ago

Just merge them all into a single studio, have it churn out a single Call of Duty every year and call it a day, lol.

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

romulus232d ago

The better term to use might be return on investment, xbox is simply a division of Microsoft one that MS can easily do away with if profit margins are not met. So in that regard he's right, if xbox isn't showing the expected return on investment the higher ups are expecting than it's unlikely Microsoft will acquire any other studios any time soon, especially if they are spending billions buying developers just to shut them down in the end.

MrBaskerville2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Xbox is a division that they discussed shutting down but doubled down on after Gamepass was pitched.

It needs to make money at some point. Big money.

rokos2d ago

According to Statista the net income of Microsoft is about $72.4 billion dollars which is a bit lower than last year profit. That is almost as much as Activision's acquisition but I assume that would be a one off since it costs so much plus I see how their focus has been shifted to AI, thus any major future investments will probably be in that area.

Markusb332d ago

i think you are really missing the point

VariantAEC1d 15h ago

@romulus23
That is not why MS buys studios. They might continue to buy because it's about taking that sweet sweet IP out of the corporate husks of their acquisitions.

ChasterMies2d ago

Xbox isn’t a separate company from Microsoft. It’s all Microsoft.

Abear211d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

Let’s be real, this is the media spinning all the acquisitions and liquidations of said developers and spinning it to make M$ the villain.

This was bound to happen, a bigger slice of pie and cut costs, when the games come they stand to make more and that’s their agenda—it was the writing on the wall when the sales went through and legally all those who approved the sale and mergers knew this would happen.

Snowflakes need to realize business is ugly and you can cry all you want but this is how capitalism works. And it works.

That said, M$ needs to steer the narrative and grab hold of all this, make their plans known, hype the hell out of all those dead IP’s they plan to revive, and be honest about the timeline. This is likely to involve mobile and IP on other consoles, and most people realize that.

The problem is this company is incapable of being transparent and seems to often want to dissuade and confuse is customer base. The lack of E3 has hurt Microsoft and I don’t think they know how to properly or effectively market their brand anymore.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 1d 15h ago
jwillj2k42d ago

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot2d ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

VariantAEC1d 15h ago

Years?

Try several decades, and in the gaming space 2.3 decades.

Jon615862d ago

You do realize this happens in ALL industries? Or are you just saying this because it is Microsoft? In any case I feel for those that are being let go but the trch industry is suffering right now.

jwillj2k41d 19h ago (Edited 1d 19h ago )

This absolutely does NOT happen all the time. Let me know the last time 1 company with a terrible product track record spent 100 billion onto acquire MULTIPLE successful companies in under a year only to shut them down and stop making their products regardless of how successful they were. Not merge them, completely shut them down.

And you can’t use Microsoft in your example.

Notellin1d 19h ago (Edited 1d 19h ago )

Class action lawsuit? The law is on their side and protects them at all costs. There are no rules to protect the people at the bottom.

jwillj2k41d 19h ago

Not true when it comes to mass layoff do your research.

RNTody2d ago

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

MrDead2d ago

ID software, the makers of Doom and Wolfenstein that have been with us since 1991 could be gone and MS will keep the IPs.

I hope some of these studios can buy their freedom from MS otherwise this is going to be even more devastating for the industry and gamers.

Yui_Suzumiya2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I've been a fan of id since Wolfenstein 3D and I'm honestly afraid.

lodossrage2d ago

Toys for Bob saw the writing on the wall and bought themselves out.

Wouldn't be the first time a company did that under MS either. Bungie and Twisted Pixel did the same. Considering what just happened, I can see some other devs trying to buy themselves out too.

anast2d ago

Good thing the bosses of all those small studios made their money.

glenn19792d ago

they cant do it right now they will get burned

XiNatsuDragnel2d ago

Phil and his team need to be gone

lodossrage2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Won't make a difference.

The whole structure needs to be overhauled. Anyone that replaces Phil will be no different than him, Mattrick, or anyone else.

Until the company changes how they go about business, nothing will change

glenn19791d 23h ago

I just don't have any idea what they would do , they have done sooo much damage on their xbox brand, they have a show at July or June I think, but will it even matter even they show amazing games, idkn

lodossrage2d ago

True,

But they may as well get it over with. Whether it happens now or later, the burning is going to hit the same.

Reality is the ONE move that can alleviate a lot of this is the one move they can't make. Remove day 1 from gamepass.
