Toshiba presents Qosmio Notebook equipped with Cell Co-Processor

Within the barrage of new and boring video players at CEATEC2007, Toshiba demoed today a Qosmio laptop equipped with their new SpursEngine. The SpursEngine is a processor loaded with four Cell Broadband Engine cores-called Synergistic Processing Elements-the same technology inside the PS3. The new processor, which also has MPEG-2 and H.264 encoding/decoding units, is designed to handle images and video bypassing the CPU or the graphic card, doing all sorts of magic to it, like real-time face recognition of video streams, like they showed in their demo:

ShiftyLookingCow6079d ago

it will be weird if these laptops were also equipped with HD-DVD drives

WilliamRLBaker6079d ago

id be funny as hell and would prove the whole war is stupid and they should just stop, get together make a unified amazing format, and then phase out hd dvd and blu ray together and make the new discs playable on both hd dvd and bluray players so early adoptors dont feel left out.

Shankle6079d ago

And then join hands under the rainbow and sing kumbaya!

gerrard6079d ago

Warner already tried that with total hd disc(works with both Bluray and HD DVD)and was rejected by both sides.

Grinchy6079d ago

Does that mean it costs loads, full of promise, then falls flat!? lol?
yes i am an Arsenal supporter

Bonsai12146079d ago

i got the reference instantly. and was actually going to make a joke about it, but you beat me to it..

jackie chann6079d ago

Is this going to out perform a quad core?

DJ6079d ago

If they manage to do OpenGL acceleration with the SpursEngine, I may actually look into getting a Toshiba PC. Right now I'm shopping for computers that can handle my render workload.

socomnick6079d ago

Open gl ? I though the standard was directx 10 :/

Ju6078d ago

I was actually thinking the same. It could help a lot with spu specific coding, shaders etc. They didn't say what it will cost, though, did they ?

ShiftyLookingCow6078d ago

I thought both OpenGL and DX have working implementations only on dedicated cards, yeah I know there is stuff like MesaGL that works on "software mode" but they are nowhere near as fast or powerful.

DJ6078d ago

It offers greater performance than DirectX, and I don't have to do any programming so it works out great. Lightwave 9.3 finally uses GPU acceleration, so I have to get a good GPU if I want to keep up.

Huey_My_D_Long4d ago

Well thats nice considering Ive heard it consistently performs worse when it really shouldn't.

Now if only Lenovo would do the same for the legion go

New and improved ASUS ROG Ally X battery life is just what it needs to compete with the Steam Deck

Yet another leak for the ASUS ROG Ally X points towards as much as 8 hours of battery, but how does that compare to the competition?

Honestly, I really like this updated version. But it doesn't solve the biggest flaw that the original had for me: the Z1 Extreme APU. Yes, it's an extremely powerful part, but it is not part of AMD's Adrenalin driver update program, so it's dependent on Asus for driver updates. And unfortunately, Asus doesn't have a stellar record of support for their devices.

Goodguy0112d ago

Up to 8 hours basically just means the least demanding games. AAA gaming at highest wattage would probably be about 2-3 hours which is good compared to just about 1 hour with the current ally. The OLED Deck can do about 2-3hrs.

mrcatastropheAF9d ago

With much less performance so that makes sense.

The Steamdeck shines at the lower TDP end but gets absolutely mopped at the high end.

Similar longevity with much better performance is a big win for the Ally X

Killa7810d ago

Too bad Asus are all awful company.

PRIMORDUS10d ago

They used to be the best when it comes to motherboards, now I will never buy anything from them again.

Firebird36010d ago

8 hrs yea right. Running tetris?

Skuletor10d ago

Only after setting the screen brightness to the lowest level, of course.

Notellin9d ago

They tested the battery life watching a game of Tetris in 360p. Running Tetris natively brought the number down slightly to 1 hour and 38 minutes. 😂

Asuka10d ago

Nope. The only improvements I want to hear is better customer support. Otherwise, I can't be bothered.
