Gamasutra Interview: Bigpoint's Big Plans Begin With Battlestar Galactica

This week, Bigpoint launched its first major project in its American expansion -- Battlestar Galactica, a Unity-powered browser-based MMO based on the popular television series which finished its run on Syfy in 2009.

The game, which has been under development for a bit more than a year, is currently exclusively running on Syfy's website. Syfy, of course, is part of NBC Universal -- which owns 35 percent of Bigpoint, and is lending the company some of its IP (including The Mummy.)

Animal FarmVille: How F2P is Changing Games Development for the Worse

Not long ago, making games was simple. Publishers would look at popular genres or areas they saw growth potential in, and then they’d assign a developer to make a game based on what they decided. It was the developer’s job to make the game as good as they could within the timeframe and budget set by the publisher. The game would then sell for $50-60.

That's a frighteningly good title for a piece like this, because it's true. What was once a hero and savior has now gone too far towards the other extreme. The pigs have become the master, and are doing exactly the things they used to hate. =/

Hi Spenok,

I did a good amount of research for this piece but admittedly picked some of the games I liked best personally, while attempting to include very different games. What would you have added to the list?

Hey man it's good to see the author getting involved in the community on the N4G side.

Personally on free to play MMO's I would have put Aion on the list for sure, and LOTRO. The games you picked were good games. And I can see why you chose them. Though I would have left out one or two of them.
