Xbox 360's Dirty Secrets: 5 Things Microsoft Doesn't Want You To Know About

NowGamer: Microsoft really doesn’t want you to read this column, or know about these things; it’d much rather you just kept playing COD or something.

Sorry, I'm normally OK with NowGamers lists, but Urmomlol is right, there's nothing in here that's actually a secret.

All five of these "dirty secrets" are either incredibly common knowledge (OMG, WHO DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE FAILURE RATE?) or groundless speculation. Stop writing these lists, Now Gamer, you're horrible at them. Or do some research before writing them or something. God they suck.

Security on Xbox Live is one thing, but surely the benefits out weigh the risks. Just look at Portal 2 and LittleBigPlanet as examples.

r1sh124885d ago (Edited 4885d ago )

to be fair..
We will never know the exact fail rate figures for any of the consoles.
Yes the 360 was bad, but for the most part its been fixed.
Ive had 2 xbox's, the old 120gb elite which I sold for the new slim 250 gb.
Never had a problem, same goes for the ps3, Ive now had 2.
The fat and the slim 250gb and not a problem with either.

theonlylolking4885d ago

RDOT is the new RROD. RROD does not exist anymore since they changed the way it alerts you. On the new xbox 360's it is a flashing dot in the middle of the ring where you press the power.

The RDOT does not happen as often but it happens and thats a bad thing.

Persistantthug4885d ago (Edited 4885d ago )

It's been 6 months.

I don't think its too far out of the way to demand more than 6 freakin months to prove XBOX 360's don't break anymore.

And to be fair again, I'm very convinced prior to the new units, that at least 50% of every owner since 2005 has had a broken XBOX 360.

I wouldn't buy a toaster with those kinds of egregious fail rate/ratios.

Sorry, but I was taught better.

Amplitude4885d ago

@Persistantthug

If somebody has owned a 360 since 2005, it is broken. It is definately much, much higher than %50. :E

Im not hating. The 360 slim has proven to be solid so far. But there's no doubt that the 360 had god-awful reliability at launch.

Retro_Zombie4885d ago

"but in this day and age of super-duper HD visuals"

Really? On the Xbox? lol!

Kleptic4885d ago

regardless of the accuracy...the best line in the entire article:

'The 360 is about as reliable as an 'xbox 360''...THAT is funny...

Trebius4885d ago

xbox struggles to do HD. Kind of hard when you have no room on the Dvd.

Edito4885d ago

We will never know exactly but take the experiences of 360 owners as example i 10 friends with 360 and they all had problems with it and i have the 1fs Gen PS3 and its working like a charm MS need to rethink about this seriously...

mikeslemonade4885d ago (Edited 4885d ago )

6. Microsoft makes it easy to join xbl-gold but more difficult to get out. When I payed for xbl-gold via the 360 it auto-renews your xbl gold once it expires. You then won't be able to cancel on the system. On the 360 they tell you to visit a website and then for the newbies they will find out that they will have to call to cancel. With all that trouble the average lazy gamer will be a xbl gold subscriber for a life time. That equates to people who will be paying $1000s for Microsoft and they don't play xbl that much or at all.

7. Microsoft advertises multiplatform games like they're exclusive for the 360. I think COD is majorly synonymous with the 360 brand. They tried to do it with Final Fantasy 13 too. GTA4 had the same kind of treatmeant.

doa7664884d ago

these are hardly secrets, everyone knows it

I like how some posters below are saying: "but, but the 360 and Kinect are dominating"

who cares? really, this site is called news for gamers, this is about games and the platform to play them, not sales numbers of housewives and toddlers dancing in front of the TV

I have a friend who just purchased his third 360, that plus almost 5 years of Live he already spent more than a 1000 to keep playing games

and he was one of the people laughing and the PS3's 600 launch price, I paid that and it's still working just fine and never paid for anything else other than games

Close_Second4884d ago

@Trebius

What a f**king stupid bit of reasoning. Because the 360 only uses DVD it can't do HD. Thats funny, cause my PC only uses DVD and the games play in resolutions that dump all over the consoles.

DVD is not a limiting factor but the amount of graphic memory certainly is.

NewZealander4884d ago

ive had two xbox 360 consoles, never had a problem although my friends have, i got a ps3 slim a year ago and it just died, now hows that for unfair!

jneul4884d ago

@NEWZEALANDER NICE TROLLIN, NO SLIM I KNOW OWNED BY MY FRIENDS OR MYSELF HAS FAILED, ITS THE PS3 FAT THAT FAILS AND EVEN THAT IS BELOW THE 10% FAILURE RATE...

Eyeco4885d ago (Edited 4885d ago )

i wouldn't really call these secrets, because we've known all of this for over a years now.

e.g. for over 2years we've known that XBL is a closed network,
we've known for 5 years now that the 360 has a high failure rate. we've known that the 360 lacks 1st party studios.

chrisnick4884d ago

none of those things matter. Not then and not now. Because once a bad product is made popular, the ignorant gobble it up and it's deemed a success.

"Dude my xbox broke 5 times. I need to buy another one."
"You have a 360? I need to grab me one too!"

^7 consoles right there.

eliasg4885d ago

Why bring the RROD again . Microsoft already solved the hardware problems on XBOX360!!!

Dave13514885d ago

yep they definitely solved it. thats why my 360 elite just broke last week. One blinking red light error code E 74. Only had it 6 months

Highlife4885d ago

Past is Past right. So we should stop teaching history.

GodsHand4885d ago

I don't even remember yesterday.... what were we talking about again?

KotC4885d ago (Edited 4885d ago )

To the PS3 fanboy who wrote this

Face palm 1. "Having an open platform would put the 360 in line with the PS3 and PC. It would open it up to all sorts of weird and wonderful games currently epitomized on the PS3 with LittleBigPlanet." Uh... the 360 started indie games on console with XNA and the 360 still has a larger more diverse library of indie, arcade, and retail games.

Face palm 2. "No more MMOs on 360" uh... name one successful MMO on console, any console, just name one.

Face palm 3. "More games on two DVDs" Ok so games will have a mandatory two disc which take 5 sec to swap but on the PS3 you have mandatory installs that take a few minutes to 45 min filling your HDD. Pick your poison.

Face palm 4. "Investment in first party games is falling" thats where 3rd party like Epic or Crytek come in. You're also forgeting Kinect 1st party and the 360 still has a larger library of games over the PS3.

Face palm 5. "360 failure rate" You mean like the PS2 fail rate? Or how about the fact that it's all been fixed free of charge from MS. How are those $150 repair fees from Sony for bad Blu-ray drives and bricked consoles do to firmware updates? RROD was fixed over 2yrs ago and that still hasn't kept the PS3 from chugging last like a caboose.

Sorry Mr 2 year old fanboy blog truth hurts.

AtomicGerbil4885d ago

While all of your points have merit I have to pull you on point 3, there are many PS3 games out there that require no install.

zireno4885d ago (Edited 4885d ago )

1. Steam

2. DCUO

3. Upgrade your HDD with any 2.5 SATA HDD and go make a sandwich while the game installs, it's better to wait 1 time than swap discs many times.

4. Without first party studios the xbox will suffer, many developers are going multiplat like the ones you mention, and having a larger library doesn't mean having the best libary.

5. This gen is about ps3, xbox and wii, not the ps2 and it's well known that the xbox have the worst failure rate. Surs the problem has been supposedly fixed but the past still counts.

ksense4885d ago (Edited 4885d ago )

to the xbox fanboy KotC

1. it doesn't allow cross platform play for games like portal and most likely other steam games in future. no free dlc or updates? how was it paying for l4d dlc when the pc users and most likely ps3 users get dlc for free with steam games?
2. you make it sound like there are dozens of MMO's that launched and failed on console by asking us to name one. Dc universe online seems to be selling fine and we shall see if it holds its own down the line. it is an option that is very hard to get on x360.
3. it is hard to make an open world game with restrictions like that and hence the linearity in a game like final fantasy which was not like that before plus MS loses money when it has to be multiple discs.
4. larger library, kinect 1st party, really ? clutching at straws?
5. o god they do it for free while i sit here without a system for 2 to 3 weeks and the inconvenience of packing and sending it. i think if they didn't do it for free they would have lost the majority of their users to ps3. ps3 doesn't have that high of a failure rate to worry about losing customers if not done for free.

On a side note I cannot believe I just wrote this.....

ironmonkey4885d ago

all of your complaints means nothing. i have no problems with my ps3. i dont bitch at it like most fanboys do. still have the 20g since first day it released no problems here. for 360 i wont even bother getting into that, everyone knows thats been hell. noone remembers ps2 failure rate why bring something up so low compared to the end of the world rrod?.

Panther527994885d ago

i believe FFXI was considered somewhat of a success on the 360. last i knew they were still supporting it anyway.

BlackBusterCritic4885d ago

Face palm 1. Because of XBL's infrastructure, you're missing out on TONS of games. Games came specifically to PS3 & PC because the developers wanted ALL gamers to be able to play together and enjoy it. Yes, the XBLA & retail library are bigger (than PS3's), but it's also more full of shit. Enjoy Bee Movie & Meet the Robinsons games.

Face palm 2. Phantasy Star Universe, FF XI, DCUO, Angel Senki, and Japan has TONS of FREE MMOs on PS3.

Face palm 3. Having two discs has never been a problem until Xbox360 came about. That is because the discs are VERY sensitive to scratches & the Xbox360 itself can DESTROY THEM. Microsoft WANTS more than one disc, because they charge more from the developers in licensing fees for each additional disc. Mandatory installs are NO PROBLEM, merely a trial of time.

Face palm 4. Microsoft's deal with Epic Games has come to an end with Gears 3, and Crytek hasn't really made phenomenal games, merely decent ones with stunning visuals. LOL But if you want TIMED EXCLUSIVES & only a FEW commissioned exclusives, then stick to that Xbox360. PS3, Wii, and PC all destroyed Xbox360 in 2010 when it comes to exclusive titles.

Face palm 5. PS2 failure rate was NEVER has bad as Xbox360's. An argument brought up by 360 fanboys...when that still doesn't justify what Microsoft did with the Xbox360. Show me the gaming articles, the BBC reports, the news media coverage, and etc of the PS2's failure rate that was as bad as Xbox360's. Easy, you can't, because it just wasn't that widespread. And being the drone you are, you think Microsoft did YOU a service by fixing your product that you paid for that was made to fail? LMFAO!!!

Sorry Mr 2 year old fanboy N4G user, truth hurts.

OSU_Gamer4885d ago

It doesn't make sense why XBL is getting knocked for not allowing cross platform gaming. There has been 1 game that takes advantage of this (portal 2) and it isn't even out yet. We should be pissed at MS because XBL currently doesn't support an un proven feature that we will have no idea if it will be successful or not? This article is reaching.

Excuse for my ignorance but what is stopping MS from doing this in the future?

KotC4885d ago

@ksense the first "cross platform game" was Shadowrun in 2007.

ksense4885d ago

^I never said portal 2 is the first cross platform game now did I? I just said that portal 2 allows that on ps3 and not on xbox and there are indications that future valve titles atleast may also use that feature.

Are the failure rates really still that high with the latest models? I find it hard to believe considering the total lack of news on this issue.

TKCMuzzer4885d ago

People have just accepted it.I know it's bad but many people are blind to it. "Your 360 will probably break, Oh its ok Microsoft will fix it for me, oh fair enough." Customers have been easily bought and many seem to accept as your buying the cheaper console you take the risk.
I have all the consoles and there is no doubt the 360 is the worst made of them all, I mean the disc tray makes me cringe the way it creeks it's way out.
The guy below is right, it's about the 5 things Microsoft don't want you to know.

PS3 failure rate isn't so hot either in my experience... Got to be worried about the first party titles, but at least the exclusives are still coming with Gears/Kingdoms...

skyward4885d ago

Touche. Thought PS3 fats were much more fail-tastic than that...

scruffy_bear4885d ago

Nah the Fats are fine got 3 working ones in my family

MrRaveDave4885d ago

my 60gb fatty got the YLOD a few months ago - cracked it open and did the solder reflow method with a head gun and its worked perfectly ever since thank god. i do love my BC :-D

mantisimo4885d ago (Edited 4885d ago )

@Mr Ravedave.

My 60 launch fatty died 2 years in, the replacement died 2 months later and the 3rd replacement died over christmas.

The Uk retailer sent it off to be fixed. (very good as I only had a standard 1 year warranty and this is 3 years 1 month since purchase.

I got it back 3 days ago and it has just died again, it will be sent back again and then if no joy I get a brand new slim.

Which I don't mind as a larger HD is more important to me than backwards comp these days(especialy as Ico/shadow is out in HD soon)

So as much as I am a PS3 fanboy they do actually die and (according to the retailer) almost exactly after 3 years!

Guessing the console repairer did the reflow but it didnt work.

So crux of the matter if you've still got a working fatty that's seen some use, fantastic, but if it starts making large fan noises watch out!

Bodster4885d ago

Even though Xbox seems to be the more frequent, Iv actually been really unlucky with this Gen of consoles.

I have had 2 PS3 YLOD's and 1 Blu Ray Drive failure and 1 Xbox 360 RROD :/

Last gen i never had any problems with my PS2 or any other console...

mantisimo4885d ago

Bodster my PS2 is still going strong in the kids room. And it's what 10 years old now.

Bodster4885d ago

I know it's crazy! I think the problem this Gen is that Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo and 95% of developers/publishers are out only to make the money and thats it, there doesn't seem to be much actual love for gaming anymore.

Although the Gaming Industry is a business, if Companies put more love and care into their products then we maybe wouldn't be here discussing these problems...

mantisimo4885d ago (Edited 4885d ago )

Bodster I generally agree but the other problem especially shown by the reflow was (certainly in Europe) the legislation to make items using lead free solder.

This new stuff just cannot handle the heating and shrinking.

Damn interfearing all the time.

Hell we can't even use old fashioned light bulbs any more (even though the new nasty energy efficient ones contain mercury, will be thrown into landfill and will probably end up poisoning our kids!)

RedDevils4885d ago

my fat ps3 working fine as ever, since 2006

mantisimo4885d ago

Lol at the disagrees at my first comment.

Ps3 fanboys disagreeing with FACT from a Ps3 fanboy.

Whatever, this forum is just getting shittier and shittier I'm out of here.

Giant Enemy Crab warm me a croissant and lets talk about the old days.

saladthieves4885d ago

@Skyward

I've only owned 2 PS3s. One fell off a shelf on Canada day when I had a drunk buddy come over and knock it off, and it was turned on. Had to buy a new one.

I've gone through 4 Xbox 360s all RRoDd. When I think about all the money I've spent on repairing/buying new ones and with Live costs, I feel like I was robbed. The 4th one died on me last October, threw in a towel and I decided to quit on the 360. It was no longer worth my money.

Highlife4885d ago

My ps3 fat YLOD about a year ago or so got a launch 60 gig. I fixed it and have to do the fix about every 3-4 months. I figure that I will keep doing that till I can't fix it anymore and will get a slim.

sbizarre4885d ago

I have an over 2 year old fatty ps3.. Would it be safer to buy a new console and transfer over all my data before it breaks? i have dropped the thing a few times while transporting it to friends places. Should i get another fatty or a slim?

+ Show (10) more repliesLast reply 4885d ago
QuodEratDemonstrandm4885d ago

My 40GB PS3 lasted 2 1/2 years before the blu-ray drive wore out. That was the first time in 15 years I sent a Sony system off to be fixed.

Tommykrem4885d ago

I agree, my PS3 has been ruined several times. But that was mostly my own fault. First I didn't turn it off properly, so my PS3's HDD was corrupted, then I bought a 7200rpm HDD, and that caused the PS3 to overheat. If people can steer away from turning it wrong, and keep the PS3 properly cooled, I think there's very little chance of it crashing.

AtomicGerbil4885d ago

From my experience the PS3 failure rate seems extremely low, out of 31 friends on PSN I've only seen 4 get YLOD. Yet everyone I know with XBOX360s are on at least their second, my own brother is on his third.

nanometric4885d ago

My 60gig died about 4 months ago or after 2 1/2 years, supposedly I got it reball'ed, died again 2 weeks later, bought a 160gig slim. My friend went trough the same thing (we went to reball together, lol), just instead of the ps3 kicking the bucket the drive went bust.

"A whopping 42 per cent of 360’s fail and that’s an up-to-date statistic – we’re not talking about the first generation of consoles, that’s the modern new ones with all the shiny new parts."

holy sh*t.

BX814885d ago

For some reason I don't believe that stat. If it were that high still I'm sure we would see 3 to 10 stories on how the 360 is doomed a day! Both the PS3 and 360 are good systems but are poorly made. I'm on my 5th or 6th 360. I usually don't use my PS3 but it freezes. I can only imagine if I used it as much as my 360.

kneon4885d ago

It's too early to tell if the Xbox slim has a high failure rate. It would have to be a real piece of crap to be dieing in high numbers already. If the failures don't accelerate in the next year then they have probably got it fixed.

teething4885d ago

This article needs to get it's facts straight... "up-to-date statistic" my ass. The article was published in Aug 2009. 2009!!! Which means the survey was probably done in early 2009.

I won't try and deny that the early 360 had high failure rates...

...but I know statistics, and I know surveys, and I know that it is easy to bias a survey to skew results. For example: If I were to poll N4G readers (predominantly PS3 users)in the same issue, you would have predominantly favorable reviews for the PS3, and unfavorable reviews for the 360. Thank fanboys. Vice versa if you did the same survey for readers of a predominantly 360 based site/mag. There is inherent bias.

Plus, people who have had problems will be more likely to respond than people who did not (it is a well studied trend in all surveys)... so across the board the failure rate is probably much lower for all 3 consoles.

At the end of the day, we will only know true failure rates for consoles if the manufacturers disclose their official numbers.

kneon4885d ago

Yup, any survey in which the participants are self selected is going to be wrong and greatly exaggerate the negative view point.

Also all the console failure rate analysis I've seen are just crap, it can barely be called analysis.

Saying something has a 50% failure rate is just stupid and meaningless. Everything has a 100% failure rate, it's just a matter of time. They need to give it terms of MTBF or the chance of failure per time period of use.

QuodEratDemonstrandm4885d ago

46% of all statistics are made up... including this one.

BABY-JEDI4885d ago

In all fairness. When my 360 Rod-ed, I sent it away & got it back fixed in 2weeks. Which is really good. When my lens went on my PS3, they collected it, & I got it back in a week. Which is really, really good. However, these things really shouldnt happen..

Why Microsoft Putting Black Ops 6 On Game Pass Is The Ultimate Test

By putting Black Ops 6 on Game Pass, Microsoft plans to gauge its growth, pricing, and monetization changes, at the cost of less game sales.

If they have follow up games that are bangers, then this strategy will work. But if it’s Call of Duty followed another dead period then it won’t last.

crazyCoconuts2h ago

From MS financial perspective I think it may be the opposite.
A year of GamePass on PC is less than the price of two full price games. For all the people that would have bought COD for $70 but instead started subbing for GP, MS will get an extra $50/year which is good.
However, for each banger that MS puts out, that's lost potential revenue because the GP sub won't need to buy it.
So it only makes sense where the new GP customers would have otherwise not spent more money with MS... Which is the case if MS puts out low quality shovelware.

rlow11h ago

If you’re looking at the short term you are correct. But if Xbox can have multiple bangers then subscriptions should increase. Which is what they want, recurring revenue.

Sonic18812h ago

I don't see it working if Call of Duty makes less money and profits over time from gamepass 🤔

blackblades2h ago

I dont understand why have it on it when we all know it sells with the name alone. Seems stupid to lose so much sales and $ just to have it on game pass. They basically shooting themselves in the foot with a already injured foot from all the other times they shoot themselves in the foot.

CrashMania1h ago

@blackblades, that's my exact point, even on xbox where most software sells poorly CoD still sells millions, but the thing is, if you don't put it on GP you kinda shatter the whole idea they've build GP up to be, they've dug this hole themselves.

I think it might tick up subscribers a bit, but warzone is already free and gets millions of players regardless of GP. But where will those extra subs come from? Xbox sales are dropping like a rock, PC gamers are very firmly rooted in Steam and will just buy it there.

Tacoboto38m ago

@black

If they don't include it on Game Pass, they lose the claim of First-Party Day-One on Game Pass, and thus would begin the slippery slope of what's-ok-to-not-include and the devaluing of the service, and further sinking Microsoft/Xbox's already tarnished reputation.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place and this move buys them time to work out more future-math.

crazyCoconuts11m ago

I still expect a price increase in GP to compensate but who knows. With all the factors in play like COD points there are too many variables for someone on the outside to predict what will happen. I assume they have a forecast model where this all looks peachy.

execs dont care, got their bonus,

MrDead2h ago

If it works CEOs and shareholders get a payday and if it doesn't even more studios get closed by MS so CEOs and shareholders get a payday.

Elda2h ago

It will sell on PC & PS but as long as COD is for rent on Gamepass it will not sell well on the XB platform. Most folks such as myself that like COD just for the campaign would rather rent it for that month instead of paying $70 plus tax for the game.

IAMRealHooman1h ago

Your smart.
its 70 for base plus 10 to 20 for a season pass plus another 30 for there better season pass,

darthv721h ago

...now you are finally getting how to use GP. No commitments, just play what is offered. if you like it so much and want to keep a copy for yourself... you can buy it when you want to. I used to buy games based on if they looked appealing and have been burned many times on things. With this, I can try before I buy. And I have actually bought several games after having rented them in the service. It literally is like the old days of renting only you get the whole store instead of pay per rental.

Elda1h ago

I've been knowing how to use Gamepass. I sub the service yearly & I play games on the service that I don't have to pay the full price for such as Persona 3:Reload. I mostly play & pay for games on my PS5 but if a game lands on GP that I'm interested in playing & I don't have to buy a copy for the PS5 I'll definitely play it on Gamepass.

Ironically number 9 can save them at this point (releasing games on multiple platforms)

ChasterMies10d ago

By “save them” you mean make more profit for Microsoft. Xbox will still be a dying hardware platform.

OtterX11d ago

You could add the naming scheme for the consoles, it just confuses customers. I know they wanted to avoid traditional numbering bc it would always be lower than their competitor, but this whole 360 then One then Series thing is confusing af. Imagine a Soccer Mom trying to figure this stuff out. I still mistakenly call the Series X the One from time to time on accident.

RNTody11d ago

Don't forget about the Xbox One, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X! Good luck to Soccer moms around the world.

S2Killinit10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

They did that on purpose to confuse and direct attention away from the generational numbering.

MS doesn’t like reminding people that they joined the industry after others had already been involved in gaming.

For instance, they called the xbox “360” to combat PlayStation “3” because they wanted to seem like “more” than “3”, so instead of xbox 2, they opted for xbox 360. Also this had the additional benefit of selling consoles to uninformed parents who might purchase a “360” instead of a “3” by mistake, or because they thought 360 was more than 3. Kind of a disingenuous move.

They have been continuing with their confusing naming patterns for pretty much the same reasons. Frankly, it fits with who and what they are as a brand.

FinalFantasyFanatic10d ago

I can understand their reasoning, but whoever came up with that naming scheme should be fired, bad naming schemes have killed consoles (I'm pretty sure it was the major reason for the downfall of the WiiU). They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo and Sega have had for their consoles, far less confusing for the consumer.

rob-GP7d ago

@FinalFantasyFanatic "They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo..."

lol, you mean:

NES, SNES
GameBoy, GameBoy Advanced, GameBoy Colour, GameBoy SP
DS, DSi, DSXL
3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL
Wii, Wii U
Switch, Switch OLED

Phil Spencer is the worst that has happened to Xbox.
They built a respectable brand up to Xbox one. Then this guy took over and things became a joke

Reaper22_11d ago

He still has his job. Something you can't say about Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga11d ago

Both bad execs. One is on job and one thankfully retired.

FinalFantasyFanatic10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

I didn't like either person, both people damaged their respective brands and produced worse outcomes, but Phil did save the Xbox brand from being retired by Microsoft. Although in hindsight, he should have just let it die, rather than languish in limbo like it is now.

Rainbowcookie9d ago

Yeah but the one that was "bad" didn't even affect sales.

bunt-custardly10d ago

Phil Spencer was also on the team back when 360 was around, alongside Shane Kim, Peter Moore etc. I think the damage that did the most harm was the Don Mattrick "Always Online" console (ahead of its time basically). They handed Sony and Nintendo a free-pass when that was revealed. It went downhill from there. Then the corporate machine went into full swing to try and recover. They have to a degree as a games company for the masses, and less so for the core gamer. Outside USA, the Xbox brand does not sell as well as Japanese based consoles (citation needed).

Cacabunga10d ago

Want a decision maker. The always online and TV plans was a disaster yes, but they caught up by announcing 1st party games that gamers actually kept the hype going.. until this moron took over and introduced the PC day one release.. e all know where that ended..

S2Killinit10d ago

I dont think they were ever a respectable brand, not since the beginning, when their goal was never to be involved and share in the gaming space. I think the OG xbox was an exception because MS as a brand was still getting its foot in and so the people behind that were people of the gaming industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic10d ago

The 360 was the brand in its prime though, everything went downhill towards the end of that generation. Its staple games like Halo, Forza and Gears are what kept the console relevant and afloat for so long.

MaximusPrime_11d ago

Really good video.

I remember the days with RRoD was big news on here, N4G.

Microsoft had it turbulence number of years.

Looking at the success of Sea of Thieves despite being 6 years old, time to release Halo, Forza horizon 4 & 5 on PS5. It'll help their revenue

shinoff218311d ago (Edited 11d ago )

2 of the 4 games they did already sold really well. So it's definitely going down. Idk about halo or forza but I feel those studios they've bought in the last 5 years, their coming

ChasterMies11d ago

I found this video painful to watch. Can someone list them out?

Top 10 for me from are:
1. 2013 reveal presentation
2. Bundling Kinect 2 with Xbox One
3. RRoD or why rushing to market with hardware is always a bad idea.
4. Buying studios only to close them.
5. Ads on the Home Screen
6. Letting Halo die.
7. Letting Geard of War die.
8. Every console name
9. Charging for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 when Sony let PS3 players play online for free.
10. Cancelling release of OG Xbox games after the Xbox 360 launched.

F*** AI

"Hey Copilot, what's a good meme to prove I dislike AI".... https://giphy.com/clips/sou...

Einhander197215d ago

Two trillion dollar company that just can't wait to put as many people possible out of work as fast as possible.

It feels like every single thing they do is making gaming worse and destroying the industry.

....you know it takes people to program the AI.... right? It isnt like it is sentient. We haven't reach skynet level of situation or anywhere close to the matrix just yet.

That's next Thursday.

Einhander197214d ago (Edited 14d ago )

It takes a people to program the AI then that AI is used for who knows how many games eliminating countless jobs which only grows as AI is used for more and more game creation functions.

What you're saying is so ridiculously short sighted and truly larking any kind of understanding and foresight.

Why all the hate? Im actually excited about this! Always wanted this kind of immersion, and an AI companion with me all the time helping me out knowing the status of my skills/inventory/progress and giving me tips on the best approach or how to craft something specific is game changing for the industry.

Hate all you want about AI, but this is just the start and I can see the potential already. You wont be complaining in the next 5-10 years about this, but rather complain if a game hasn’t implemented it.

MrDead15d ago

Yes we can't wait for the work of others to be used without the need to pay them so that MS can profit even more from the people they fire.

I_am_Batman15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

There is no chance I'd ever use something like this, especially if it's not part of the core game design, but a layer on top of it. It's way too much handholding. Many games already feel like busy work, because they don't let the player figure things out on their own. Having a real-time interactive guide defeats the purpose of playing the game in the first place in my opinion.

If this were to become the standard like you predict, we'll see more and more video games get away with bad design, because people will just be used to ask for help from the AI companion anyway.

Number1TailzFan15d ago

Well Nintendo don't need this with some of their games these days, with invincible characters, items, easy bosses etc.. they do the hand holding built in

helicoptergirl15d ago

Takes "hand holding" in games to a whole new level.

BlackDoomAx14d ago

Because human nature xD Almost every new technology had these kind of comments.
