Microsoft Welcome’s Geohot With Open Arms, Looking Forward To A WP7 Jailbreak

The guys behind the iPhone and most recent Sony PS3 jailbreaks are tired of the threats of lawsuits by Apple and Sony. The Geohot team has suggested that Microsoft Windows Phone 7 is the last bastion of hope.

Moving to a company that won't mind a jailbreak huh? HA

blitz06234861d ago (Edited 4861d ago )

Meh, they're probably gonna ask how he jailbroke the PS3. Simple as that

MintBerryCrunch4861d ago (Edited 4861d ago )

that question would be directed at the failoverflow group....they are the ones who opened up the PS3 and made its security system vulnerable...plus if any programmers at MS watched the 40 minute video of how they did it, then they would have a better understanding of what happened than most of us on this site

and last time i checked geohot is one guy, not a group or team of hackers....they seem a little misinformed

NewMonday4861d ago (Edited 4861d ago )

Dos W7P have an exclusive carrier? If not then this is pointless.

MintBerryCrunch4861d ago

^^^^

no its not, its on multiple carriers, same OS...just different phones that run it...its more of a competitor to Android imo than the Iphone OS...plus the Iphone will be coming to Verizon in the coming months as well...matter of taste...some will buy what they are used to, others will try something new imo

zag4861d ago

Chevron7 jailbroken the win7 phone but MS have also turned around and said they have to remove it or face being sued.

LORD-PHOENIX4861d ago

ms need all the publicity they can get for wp7 have you seen the sales figures?

its practically bombed, they wouldnt release numbers then released shipped numbers it was all a mess and ms got called out on it by engadget

FrankMcSpank4861d ago

If you mod your 360 so the fan runs better to keep it cooler so it prevents the RROD, Ms will still ban you. I can't believe this for one second. MS giving someone else freedom on their product? Not bloody likely.

Millah4861d ago (Edited 4861d ago )

MS just wants publicity on WP7, simple as that. They've seen how much publicity the PS3 and iPhone jailbreaks get, and they want that spotlight. Problem is, the reason those two jailbreaks get so much publicity was because they are for two extremely popular products.

I think its funny MS is trying to act like they embrace hackers, "dev-creativity," etc. Well if that were the case, then WP7 would have been an open platform like Android from the get go. Same with the Xbox, so why are they so vicious against Xbox 360 hackers then? These very same hackers they supposedly are embracing.

Just MS being pathetic as usual. They want publicity for their new platform that has failed to gain any traction, despite their usual $500 million ad campaign.

I_find_it_funny4860d ago

WHY IS THIS POSTED AS NEW AGAIN?

Carlos_Irwin_Estevez4860d ago

lol MS are just desperate to get ppl talking about WP7 its a total flop.

lociefer4860d ago

its not to test his skills, but to boost sales on their phone

PS3pwnsyou4860d ago

HOLY SH!T 720 degrees in 17 mins!!!??? I don't even...

How is this possible?? Brutal new record lol

GrieverSoul4860d ago (Edited 4860d ago )

I was coming here to say Duplicate Story but this is the same article that was posted 5 hours ago.

WTF?!!?!?!

Now it says its been submited 40 minutes ago!?!?!?
Is MS paying N4G to promote Windows 7 or what?!?!

No wonder 700º in less than a hour!

????

EDIT:
User "derangedshaman" submited this story and was approved 13h ago. But if you click it comes up on 40 minutes time mark. N4G, what the hell is this???

Dee_914860d ago

lol
they want geohot to hack the phone for the exposure for the phone
they shouldve went that route with kinect
wouldve been way cheaper then 500mil

Shepherd 2144860d ago

So a random MS phone developer posts a tweet about liking a kids work, and that means that the whole Microsoft company wants him, huh?

Cause im pretty sure thats what the biased title is implying.

Kurt Russell4860d ago (Edited 4860d ago )

People who are pissing and moaning about this being a duplicate story should maybe rethink posting comments and hitting said duplicate story... Otherwise you defy you're own point. :/

zeeshan4860d ago

LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!! It is a Microsoft product! Of course it has security holes ALL OVER the place!! :D hahahaha Don't believe me, look at Windows :D Enough said!

Ryudo4860d ago

@zeeshan

You do know Microsoft software is some of the most secure on the planet, the problem is for every 1 person trying to find a security loop hole in the PS3 there's 20000 people finding them in Windows.

The fact Windows still functions at all shows how great the security is.

RedDevils4860d ago

looking at the dougebag face, boy do I want real hard punch onto his face!

NeutralGamer4860d ago

What the fuck Geohot?

What about all those "Donate money to me so I can keep jailbreaking for you" buttons on his site?!

Now he is using all the donators moneys to go buy him a new device and abandoning them?

+ Show (16) more repliesLast reply 4860d ago
xtremeimport4861d ago

idk if people remember this BUT, MS banned people for using 3rd party devices and had a HUGE ban wave like almost 2 years ago. thanks to them, i had to buy a new xbox. soo this makes me giggle.

gamingdroid4861d ago

They were banning people that was pirating games....

xtremeimport4860d ago

before that huge ban wave people were getting banned for just using 3rd party devices. And I know it was games as well..since thats what I was banned for.

gamingdroid4860d ago

I have never heard of anyone get banned for using a third party peripheral. If anything, they only disable your ability to use said third party peripherals.

I have only heard of basically pirates (or more accurately modders) being banned.

lil Titan4861d ago

all the popular phones get jailbroken microsoft just wants to be in that crowd smh

mcstorm4861d ago

Wp7 has already been jailbroken so not sure why the have done this. Also to say wp7 is a flop is wrong 1.5 million is a good start for a new os and the way the phone shops have been clueless about wp7. I went in carphoneware house n phones4u when wp7 came out to see if they were getting the hd7 and they said I don't want windows mobile as its too buggy I should look at android or iPhone. When I asked if they could show me a windows phone 7 they said they had none in but said it looks just like this and gave me a hd2 which runs wimo 6.5 not wp7. Once people use the phone and have training in shops on them people will start to see its a very stable os, quick, easy to use and fits into allmost into every ones life. I don't think wp7 can over take android or iPhone but I will get 3rd spot within the next 2 years. Plus because android is built like the orignal wimo over the next few years they will start to hit the same problems wimo did with software only working on some devices and not others where as MS holds the strings on hardware and software for wp7 it will be alot more stable like the iPhone.

r1sh124860d ago

Windows phone 7 has already been jailbroken.
MS gave the guy who did it a t-shirt which said I was teh first person to jail break WP7

lelo2play4861d ago (Edited 4861d ago )

Good for Microsoft... not like other companies that go crying to court, wasting everybody's time. Some companies (will not mention by name) look like little kids that got beaten and go home crying for mama.

Microsoft, why not ask Geohot's advice to make a more secure system. Sony and Apple should do the same thing.

zeksta4860d ago

You know.. I'm not even going to bother to write a Decent reply to you, all I have to say is 1 Word.

Idiot.

cozmo1954860d ago

@lelo2play
lets see you spend billions on dollars of research and investing and manufacturing a product to see someone just hack it to run pirated games which could be done by custom firmware that anyone with half a brain could install

and why the fuck would they hire geohot anything they will to destroy him financially and make sure he is never able to hack again

lelo2play4860d ago (Edited 4860d ago )

@zeksta
You don't want to reply... then your reply is that I'm idiot. Real mature. Grow up you moron.

@cozmo195
A person buys a product. It's his product. He can do what ever he wants with it. If he wants to throw it out the window, then it's up to him. If he wants to hack it, then it's up to him. It's his product.
It's the same thing you buying a computer with Windows, and you want to uninstall windows and install linux, but you can't because the manufacturer does not allow it. Or buying a automobile and want to change the radio, but can't because the manufacturer does not allow it.

fatstarr4860d ago

meh microsoft loves hackers. thats why everything illegal is done on windows they dont care :D.

but i dont see what there is to hack on windows phone 7

jerethdagryphon4860d ago

the whole article is a mess, of corse they dont care to much its advertiseing and legla, now if he found w way to pirate it or something then theyd be annoyied

bad comaprison

HungPHATx4860d ago

Instead of Jailbreaking and Hacking peoples devices ! Try getting some pussy and find something better to with your free time Buddy

Vherostar4860d ago

Do we need more proof that MS exploits piracy for its own gain?? Its done it with the 360 and now its trying with W7 phones.

GSpartan7774861d ago (Edited 4861d ago )

LOL Nice PR by Microsoft. With Sony already looking like the bad guy in this situation why not? However, wanting him to jailbreak the windows phone is almost as if it was jailbroken already since they expect it AKA windows phone seems like it's going to be an open device unlike the iphone.

Edit: Windows Phone has already been jailbroken. <_< Why would Geohot bother with it?

Ducky4861d ago

... to jump in and steal the credit for himself?

NewMonday4861d ago

As for "bad guys" it depends on point of view, whether you approve of stealing the hard work of others or not.

Lich1204861d ago

Its not that black and white new. Im against pirating software, but I don't think what Geohot did should be considered illegal.

DarkFantasy4860d ago

yes because Sony is just like sooooo evil for trying to stop piracy, there so bad/S

GSpartan7774860d ago

I didn't say Sony was the bad guy, I'm simply referring that Microsoft is taking advantage of this situation because Sony is in a position where they look as if they are bullying GeoHotz by taking him to court.

NYC_Gamer4861d ago (Edited 4861d ago )

this is a direct jab at sony

Edit@below
yes i agree its also towards apple

GSpartan7774861d ago (Edited 4861d ago )

It's somewhat towards Apple as well, since Apple hates the fact that their iPhone gets jailbroken while Microsoft is being open to it.

dktxx24861d ago

I thinks its more a jab at their own customers. Here Sony is trying to fight for developers and gamers alike against douchebag hackers, and Microsoft is saying have fun, we already have there money.

Hitman07694861d ago

Interesting point dktxx2. I didn't think of it that way... but that makes sense.

Kewl_Kat4861d ago (Edited 4861d ago )

I totally agree. The real question should be is why Windows Phone was never open to begin with. In a way, MS is saying "We're selling this phone, and only hackers can enable features that we locked in the first place. Oh, and the warranty won't cover any damage that hacking may cause. "

Lord_Doggington4861d ago

probably has some tech in the phone that shocks you when you try to hack it "...go aheaaad, man. hack the phone... we WANT you to.."

Op244861d ago

That'll make his afro stand high hahahaha

Passthemic4861d ago

Future Microsoft employee in the making :)

Op244861d ago

Hey if he could put his hacking to good use on the Xbox by making it a do whatever you want console without the cheating and piracy im all for it. But what he's doing on the PS3 needs to end nobody besides people who pirate games etc are happy about it.

Passthemic4861d ago

Sony should have better security measures in place for the PS3 if it doesn't want it to be hacked.

whitesoxfalife4861d ago

wow really? i gave u a disagree on that ps3 is not "god"

DarkFantasy4860d ago

XD!!!! Lord_Doggington Bubble+!

Jazz41084855d ago

What.......Ps3 is not God? I could have sworn i read diffrently in the comments on here every day by the Sony Fanatics.

Passthemic4861d ago (Edited 4861d ago )

It's all good until something breaks :)

theEnemy4860d ago

Is MS that desperate ?

They 'want' hackers to notice their product so other people will as well.

lol

Microsoft had a good idea but fumbled it again.

Cacabunga12h ago(Edited 12h ago)

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow1d 7h ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo18211h ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie1h ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow54m ago(Edited 51m ago)

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

OtterX14h ago

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Tody_za14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno13h ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Inverno11h ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

ohhh man, the press really did not like those last closures, their having a field day bashing xbox,

anyway, ive got to nip off to the shops now, i've run out of microwave popcorn.

Jingsing23h ago

Apparently the last 10 years wasn't enough to get the gaming press to notice but as soon as they touch Bethesda it is full on nuclear war. A lot of people in the gaming press seem to have this irrational hard on for Fallout and Skyrim despite the fact they are low quality poor buggy games.
I've grown tiresome of the unbalanced fandom in the gaming press for fantasy games and their ability to just forgive crap so long as it's a fantasy game RPG game all quality concerns are not an issue for them,

anast22h ago

Popcorn has been good lately.

PapaBop20h ago

Clearly this is just a big conspiracy orchestrated by the popcorn industry, Microsoft are just their puppets, every time they open their mouths, I'm forced to stock up on popcorn.

TheEroica14h ago

Yep, Microsoft and Sony are a mess. Neither have a compelling business strategy and they're not making bangers anymore.

Xbox is getting rightfully roasted here

Einhander19721d 13h ago

The only point to xbox is and always has been to take market share and money from PlayStation and Nintendo, but mostly PlayStation. It's been the goal since sweaty Steve Balmer said it himself.

1d 12h ago
ApocalypseShadow1d 7h ago

Yup. To put Sony out of business because they thought they were a threat to their Windows business.

solideagle18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

Genuinely curious: how is Sony (hardware company) threat to Windows (operating system/software company) business?

isarai1d 11h ago

I mean the motto "xbox, the most optional console ever made" was peaked years ago, people are just now taking a step back from deepthroating Phil to see what we've all been seeing for a long time now.

Ra303011h ago

The current Microsoft Xbox motto is .....We're Microsoft Xbox, and we don't care and it shows!

P_Bomb1d 10h ago

I’ve still got friends that main on XB. For their sake, I hope it sticks around. They’ve put everything into that ecosystem. It’s all or nothing.

I wonder if we’ll ever get back the level of competition seen during the 360/PS3 era?

NotoriousWhiz1d ago

Seems like Daddy Microsoft is trying to shut it down. Or at least bring costs under control. On the bright side, it seems likely that acquisitions are going to stop.
