Politicians think video games are influencing children to be violent, but they're just making people all apathetic toward racial and sexual violence and hate. Call of Duty: Black Ops' custom emblems show just how depraved gamers can be.

Pixelsword I think you're getting slightly confused. The creation of an emblem is a CREATIVE manifestation of what a person is feeling, where shooting someone is a VIOLENT manifestation. They're completely different things.

While the content of the emblems in question may be offensive to some, they are still creative. Shooting someone is not. I would say that by getting as angry as you are obviously getting, you are playing right into the hands of the people who created the emblems, as all they want is a reaction.

Maybe it's just me, but I really can't understand why people get offended by pictures. For goodness sake, they have no physical effect. You don't look at a picture and then become what's in the picture.

When you are attacked in the way a picture like that displays, then get mad, but until then why waste precious seconds of your life being upset by an image? Seriously if you look at a picture like that and can then treat someone differently because of it, you already had a personality defect to begin with, and the picture was just a catalyst for what was already there.

DMarc: That's exactly what they are, just pictures. An image cannot hurt a person. An image cannot inflict any type of reaction unless a person allows it to. It is simply an image. An inanimate thing with no life, no way of actually causing any harm unless you apply a context to it that would allow yourself to lose the logic that it is, after all, nothing but a picture.

That skit that you talked about was supposed to be ironic and satirical. It was supposed to be pointing out that racism, at it's core, is not about color but about stereotypes and prejudices that are passed from one to another in certain environments.
Being able to laugh at racism doesn't make you any bigger than the "petty" issues. It is really just an alternate method for dealing with it. You know, sometimes people laugh in the most uncomfortable situations imaginable.
At the end of the day, not everybody that has lynching emblems and such are racists. Most are probably just trying to get unwarranted attention. But, that doesn't excuse the use of said objects (in extremely poor taste) as a "joke". Their joke is still a sad string in history that has woven itself into the tapestry of the present.

I assume you are referring to the U.S. Constitution First Amendment. If you are then you should probably read it. It only protects against persecution from the government, not private organizations. There is no freedom of speech on private networks. Also, even the First Amendment has restrictions. You can't say "bomb" on an airplane. You can't yell "fire" in a theater (unless there is one). You can't incite riots, etc..

You say it is not against the law to be racist or sexist, but it is unlawful to discriminate (for employment) on the basis of race and gender, and there are hate crime laws on the books now.

I'm glad this has been brought up. Whilst playing the other night me and my party got verbally abused as we entered a lobby just because we had a clan tag. When going to the so called players player card he had spent some uneducated time producing an image including the male private area. He obviously thought he was a star. I can safely say of all the games I play online COD easily has the biggest idiots.
As much as we can report these players I also think that both Treyarch and Activision have a social duty to delete these images and suspend online for the players for a period. I'm sure they have easy access to all the images produced and it should be monitored accordingly.
To all those who are producing these images, stop take a look at yourself and ask yourself why. For all the racist images, why? its 2011, what makes you think white people are so superior. By producing these images you just seem to point to the exact opposite.

In every Black Ops game I'm ever been in, I've dealt with pictures of sexual abuse, pictures depicting racism such as the one above, and bestiality. What the fuck is wrong with people?
