PlayStation Network Has Finally Matched Xbox LIVE

Whenever issues relating to Playstation Network and Xbox Live is brought up, it is always greeted with diverse reactions, It's been a four years since the arrival of the PlayStation Network and there has been a lot of changes lately.

The PlayStation Network get's better everyday and in my opinion it's definitely up to the level of Xbox Live right now.

Essentially when you buy a game for the 360 you are paying $65.00 for the game not $60.00. For this to be justified for gamers, they have to use this for dedicated servers for all games even multiplats. Other than that it's not worth it.

Cross game chat is a big one, the community is the other. There are more people on xbox live and the games are more populated because of that. I have 360 and if I am getting a multi console game I usually go with live. Everything seems to just work better on it, look at Black ops. Ps3 has lag issues and 360 does not. Thats not a uncommon thing, for whatever reason live usually ends up being more reliable with newer games. live just seems to work better. ANd I do enjoy more people to play with and party chat.

It's not about being free or not, it's what they both offer, the article is 'which ones better' not 'which one has more bang for your buck,' a silly Iphone game isn't better then a game like Killzone 2 or Gears just because it's free.

That being said, I think PSN is much better then Xbox live. For every feature that Xbox live has, there's a feature on PSN that is equally as if not more useful on PSN. Sure Xbox as cross game chat, but PSN has the web browser, Which I use to watch youtube videos and have quick assess to other sites right on my TV. Voice recording is kinda nice, but I would never give up HOME for it.

I recently paid $60 to renew my XBlive account. I paid for one reason; gaming online and cross game/party chat. I don't care much for any of the other features because all of those features like Netflix, facebook, among others are free regardless if you're a silver or gold member.

Even without the inclusion of the features mentioned, they're supposed to be free! All I have to do is hit the on switch on my laptop or desktop and the features mentioned are available for no extra charge - the exception being Netflix but that's a given. And with most HDTVs now compatible with DVI, you can surf, stream and download videos with your HDTV as a monitor. The BS they feed you isn't true. All is needed is a DVI cable, if compatible.

Why do you think Microsoft doesn't implement some sort of web browser for the 360? By limiting the free content already available online, they can easily convince the 'ignorant' masses that Live isn't a ripoff with the inclusion of the features mentioned. From my perspective, I'm only paying for online gaming. Even if I were to use most of the features Microsoft likes to brag about, and I do use Netflix often, I'm still only paying for online gaming because the content is free regardless how different it may look on Xbox Live.

Sony bragging about the content they make available to their consumers is no different than Microsoft doing the same. The only difference is that their "content" is available for free. Although I no longer have a PS3, I give it up to Sony for not ripping off their consumers. Microsoft needs to take some notes from the Sony handbook but that's probably not going to happen anytime soon, if ever.

And to add salt to a badly open wound, the content that many developers want to make free to their consumers is limited because Microsoft won't allow it. That and they won't allow free content. That is the biggest BS this generation in my opinion.

I sometimes hate Microsoft as a company, but I can't help it. My friends play on the 360, so I do the same. That's my $0.02.

One missing feature? There are tons of missing features, the whole XBM just feels bland and boring and trying to pull it up in game is a mess. PSN needs to have something similar to XBL when you hit the PS button in game instead of bringing up the entire XMB. 90% of the options on the XBM can't be accessed during gameplay, so why have the entire XBM pop up? On 360, when you hit the Xbox button it brings up an essential menu of what you need such as, friends, messages, party, achievements, avatar awards, etc. Everything is basic and takes a half a second to access.

I never said PSN wasn't successful, in fact I said it's got much better since it's release, so much better for being free also, but still missing tons of features.

Even when I used to have live, I would hardly use any of those features, the fact is I bought live because I had NO CHOICE, it was the only way I could play online, without it I was locked out of 50% of my game purchase. Those features are added incentive, but $60? nope you cannot justify it.

If the ability to play online was a silver feature I bet 9 out of 10 people would never pay for live again, you have been led to believe live gold has so much added value when other services like steam and im sure PSN in the very near future would give that to you as standard for free.

Its also interesting how you list what live has that PSN doesn't, yet you dont list what PSN has that live doesn't, I think they at the very least cancel each-other out.

#2 can be done by either inviting people into a game or making your own server and doing the same.

There are a VERY SMALL handful of "items" that differentiate LIVE! & the PSN and those differences are not at all as certain types of people try to make them out to be.

Fact is that ANYONE with internet access can play online with a PS3 immediately while 360's owners cannot until they pay additional for something that is already on the same multiplatform game the person on the PS3 is playing. Plus most TRUE GAMERS would rather have a service/console that can do/handle a 256 multiplayer online game over Cross Game Chat. And all while being done for FREE.

Come see me when the 360 can do that. (Tip: Don't hold your breath)

Newer ps3 games does have cross game invites. Older games like re5 and red alert 3 had custom made systems but games registered after mw2 use a unified system. So if sony releases cross game chat they can easily have a party system but it wil only support games with the new invite system.

You can party up to 128 players in MAG. They can even all talk to each other at the same time. The most i launched with a clan was 2 platoons and about another half. That's about 76 people able to talk in clan deploy before choosing a platoon and then a squad.

Believe me I'm farthest from a hater but you're talking about in game parties and I'm talking about XMB / PSN parties where you just chill with a bunch of your friends talking while you all play different games or just do whatever and the entire party sticks together in and out of games.

Also, I want to appear offline and still see which friends are online. It's not a "huge fkin deal" it's just something nice to have when you don't want to be spammed. Being on away means your friends still try to get a hold of you, but if you're appearing offline they won't bother at all.

Well, there is 2 places you can chill with your friends (I'm not sure if you can all join a game together VIA there).

One is for Voice, add your friends and you can all have a chat,

The other is text, ingame or not, you can be in this place and text eachother. Its like MSN, you text and see it come up.

Appear OFFLINE is not an option, But appear AWay (or Busy) is an option. You CANNOT directly appear offline, only Away/Busy.

Well, I feel silly, I mean here I was, all these years believing PSN was BETTER than Live.
Just goes to show, you cannot rely on the N4G regulars for credible gaming info.
Look, PSN is great, truly is but Microsoft have integrated The Xbox Live Experience into the xbox in such a seamless and fluid way that SONY cannot replicate.
That being said, do I think that Live Gold is worth the admission fee? Hell no!
But that doesn't make it any less DESIRABLE even up against its free rival.
Think of it this way, a Lambo is still a Lambo even at the ridiculous asking price.
Given the option, most people would chose a free Audi S4 over an expensive Lambo, however, all people would WANT the Lambo.

Sony can't replicated because of how Microsoft created the Xbox 360... the system was built for Xbox Live not the other way around. So Microsoft can add stuff like the Party system and it be backwards compatible with every single game ever released... this is the difference that can never be matched on the PS3... PSN was a last second addition to the plan and if you think otherwise then you need to go do some research. That being said expect the next Playstation to follow in the footsteps of XBL and expect to pay for it... this stuff isn't cheap you know.

Yes, trimming the in game xmb would be great. However its not that slow nowdays, seldomly takes me more than 2 seconds to load up. Compare that to the 10-15 seconds it used to take when it first came its a quite remarkable improvement. And it doesnt freeze up the ps3 anymore, now that was annoying as hell. But if they trimmed it down and integrated it with the old menu(hold ps button) id bet it would be as fast as the xbox guide.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say since the sentence I quoted above doesn't make sense to me but I don't think one (XBL or PSN) is better than other when it comes to online gaming.

Not bells, whistles, features, extended chat options, etc but simple online connectivity, latency and being able to hook up with friends and communicate with them in game. PSN runs no different that XBL for what I listed above. I have been an XBL subscriber since it was released 7+ years ago and have been gaming on PSN since it launched.

That is what should matter most to gamers.

TBH, I have both services and which do I play more? - PSN. Only because I prefer the exclusives (not to mention bigger quantities of players in game on said exclusives) and I find the interface cleaner, tidier and more 'adult' than XBL.

Xbox only has P2P (apart from GoW3 in 12 months time!) where as a lot of Sony games have dedicated servers making a better experience IMO.

So PSN doesn't have custom sound tracks - do I care? No, cos to be quite frank having Trance pumped up whilst trying to play a game is totally fucking pointless. Cross game chat would be nice (it's never gonna happen in PS3's life time) but it's not the be all and end all. If I'm playing the same game as friends (most of the time) then we chat using the games chat so meh!

XBL is NOT worth the annual fee despite all you half arsed fan boys thinking that M$ are actually giving you value for money when all those 'premium' apps (Facebook etc) are free on a PC or your PS3.

LIVE has been out for a long time and Sony has just about (almost, but not quite) caught to LIVE in half the time LIVE was started on the original XBOX.
So Sony get big props for constructing PSN within the PS3 stage of life, I don’t even count the PS2 network, that was just a mere afterthought, PSN really started on the PS3 and they have quick fast ramped up the network almost toe-to-toe with LIVE, the only thing to put the icing on the cake is cross game chat, but is that REALLY that much of a needed feature? I have LIVE and barely use it and to me that is not a deal break if PSN never incorporates it.

I like the PSN/XMB much better, as soon as i power on the 360 the dashboard seems more cluttered than an episode of hoarders. The PS3 XMB is a lot more simpler with the same features as live and a lot more elegant.

each has their own strength and weakness. no point in trying to compare when they are 2 different services. xbl is more streamlined and slightly more user friendly but when you pay for a service thats what happens. psn is free so the xmb is slightly slower and sony is in no hurry to fix that but hey its free. cross game chat is missing from psn but thats a hit or miss with some people. it would be nice to have it on psn but its not a deal breaker by any means. psn is coming close to matching xbl but it still needs improvement. i enjoy both services for what they offer and playing online with either console is exactly equal in terms of quality.

PSN is a good service given that its still in its BETA and it being Free for so long and growing the way it has and is currently shows sony's dedication to there costomers. But even sony knew that they couldnt keep providing a free service which is why the introduced PSN+ and are looking into what EA introduced with there games (though i doubt they will do it) i give sony credit for not removing any of the original service from the Free service and i applaud any PSN owner who has PSN+ because it shows there support (not that those who dont have it dont.

But how can you then come on and say all MS has is Cross game chat that is the most used comment on this site for LIVE on this site and its the dumbest one. Everyone uses the service for different reasons and there is alot more to live than cross game chat. If you dont use the other features then thats your preference, if you dont think the service is worth the money then dont pay for it simple!

I own both machines and even though PSN is free i still rather LIVE it is a better service to me at this present time.

Cross game chat is the only missing feature. Considering just about every game has a chat function built in all your doing is being petty, why would you be talking to someone who isn't even in the same game as you? Party chat I can understand, but again many games have party features anyway.

Lol this site is full of one sided people. I have both consoles and i find Xbox live far better than psn. Cross game and party chat are so much better than what chat psn offers but also taking your party into one game or of you leave a game you can still chat to them. MS got it right with the way they built the 360 the designed it around live where Sony made the hardware and put the software on to and because of this it lets the live side of the console down. This is part of the reason why most 3rd party games sell more on the 360 because it works better in terms of use. Updates are far quicker to download for the 360 too. Its easy to jump from a game to a app where the ps3 you have to exit the game go to the dash and then open the app. I've also used home a few times on the ps3 and apaet from it looking nice its just used as a chat room for kids and there don't really seem to be a point to it. The one thing the ps3 has over the 360 is Play tv which works very well when recording and watching tv programs. I also have sky player on the 360 and this is very good too but they both work in different ways. Also for any one who thinks the 360 is missing a web browser wake up the ps3 and Wiis web browser suck IDE rather use my mobile to brows the web. I will say that BBCi player and love film work well on the ps3 but don't work with the Sony remote which to me is pointless sky Zune Facebook ect all use the 360 media remote. You can say what you like to this post but all that i have said is true. The ps3 has by far the best hardware and the 360 has by far the best software.

As I see the problem it is useless to compare these 2 online services pointing on specific features only. I think it is much better to overview all the stuff they offer and decide what is important and what is not.
First I have to say that I own both devices and both of them are connected to the Net since their launch. So I guess I have a clear vision of the things.
Both of them have their positive and negative sides. From the usability view I think that XBL is superior to PSN, although I think that old dashboard was more comprehensive than the new one. I common XBL is much more social oriented. I mean that the usage of this service is easier to chat, write text messages, or record voice ones, etc. The interface of dashboard is much more suitable than XMB for those features - you wont miss an event like message, invitation or something like that.
But this didn't make XBL to become my choice. I mean I quit subscribing gold membership about 1,5 years ago and don't miss it.
The greatest difference between these 2 services can be defined like:
IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE XBL AS A SERVICE YOU HAVE TO PAY A MANDATORY FEE. WITHOUT IT - XBL IS NOTHING, BUT AN AD OF THE PAID SUBSRIPTION. OTHERWISE USING PSN YOU NEED TO PAY FOR PSN+ ONLY IN CASE IF YOU WANT SOME EXTRA FEATURES.
All other things like crossgame chating or ingame music are mostly unimportant. For example, some games for PS3 have the ability to make a screenshots and even record videos of gameplays. And noone consider those nice features seriously. Why some xbox-oriented people cannot stop repeating about the same unimportant features for XBL? What's the use of them when you don't pay the yearly subscribtion fee?
The other aspect of the problem is content. Content is the king - as many said at the early days of PSN, when it was tiny and young. And empty. Nowadays PSN offers tons more free stuff than XBL. Absolutely uncomparable amount of free of charge wallpapers, themes, avatars etc. And considering that ordinary PSN user doesn't have to wait a couple of weeks to download a demo as silver subscribers of XBL has to do, PSN+ offers even more.

I'm seeing a lot of specials on XBL memberships and even many stores throwing a year in free with a console purchase. I believe you also get 30 days free when you buy a new console. At least it used to be that way.

I'm not sure where you get this complicated thing? More money yes, but complicated? The Xbox walks you through the steps when you first connect it online. There is nothing more complicated about it then setting up a PSN account or Wii acount except the fee.

When you get an app from iPhone the free apps usually have ads that's why their free because someone paid for that usage, and we put up with the ad be whee it's free. But you also have the option of disabling it if you pay for the app.

I have 360 and PS3 and think Live is slightly better, but definitely not 60 bucks better so I no longer buy it. I'd say it's worth at most 25 bucks a year but not the price of a brand new game!

But here are Lives advantages

Messaging - when I receive a message I press one button to read it immediately, on PSN I have to go through about four steps to get to it, then another 3 the get back to the game.

Headsets - The voice quality is just way more consistent with Live and I can continuously talk to my friends, whereas on PSN the chat cuts out during loading and at menus, ect. which is lame. I find myself using my cell phone to set things up or discuss the match after. PSN needs continuous chat in game - I don't care about cross game chat.

That's it, as that's all that relates to playing games. All the other stuff Live has is worthless to me so I don't pay to play.

I have both subscriptions, to me psn is better i have reasons.

Mainly its FREE! and with Dedicated servers.
I video chat with all my cousins in college over the country, some older and younger relatives too.

Xbox has a better community experience, but i would be lying bold face if i said i used cross game chat, that doesn't even make sense, and i have friends who use that features to cheat.
I dont like live simply for the network structure, NOT SAYING I DONT PLAY, i just dont understand what they charge for when we use our own bandwidth.

I'm not playing a lot online, but, for all i know:
- on both cases service is reliable, playstation network has been improved since launch and xbl too, so now there are much less disconnections than before, you can enjoy online sessions on both platforms if your connection is setup correctly of course.
- no cross game invites for the ps3 is still something annoying, it's a really cool feature on xbl to be able to invite a friend to join any game whatever he's actually doing.
- no cross game chat for psn, but it's coming in the next weeks now, the service is being tested with home and playtv, and will for sure activated in a next update. But for free?
- a lot of additional features are free on PSN and there is a web browser (not perfect but present), biggest Sony VOD, VIDzone, others vod services...
- PS+ is offering a lot of content, the offer is similar to XBL with game of the week. You pay to be "premium member" ad then have access to better prices for some content. It's not quality over quantity most of the time, but gamers that love to consume and try everything will be pleased.

Hard to tell who is the winner, i guess free is always better. Anyway both services have improved, the only problem is for XBL silver members, each year they see a feature removed or tweaked to be exclusive, or easily accessible to gold members. And that's a pain in the ass.

The reality is that ps3 it a better hardware, blu ray discs are much better than dvds in quality and durability, theres a lot of ps3 exclusives and almost all of them are great. But in mutiplayer network service xbox live is far superior than psn is not just x gamechat or voice mesages it's really a lot of stuff. A good work around for the missing xgame chat on PSN is to just use skype on a near by PC or skype enabled device if thats a possibility for you the call quality is always awesome, me and my mates do that all the time. Lol So much rage over one little feature.

A month ago I would have jumped on the anti-live band wagon,because I hate paying for things that are free elsewhere. But exactly two weeks ago I paid for a months subscription of Xboxlive and have not looked back Nothing beats playing games like ACE combat 6 online while talking to my best friend and his buddies while they play Reach. I'm not defending Live TOTALLY (I still choose free online over paying for something)..But most of you have probably never used LIVE before and are just bashing it for no reason.
LIVE has a much smoother,cleaner,FRIENDLIER interface than whats offered on PSN (my friends list on PSN is so Haphazard that it's not too good too look at).While most of you are deriding Chat,voice messages etc(which IMHO makes it 10x easier to keep in touch with friends and other players),My advice to those of you open minded exogenous is to GIVE IT A SHOT before you bash the hell out of it.

PSN is by far a better deal than Live and if the PS3 gets an upgrade to their browser with Google Chrome, as has been rumoured, and Google TV then I don't see how Live can even compete. The current browser can stream Pandora and other music sites.

The only thing really giving Live an advantage is that install base for some of its mainstay games like Halo, Gears and the extra % of gamers buying multiplats (CoD) on the Xbox, mostly because the Xbox released 1 year earlier and was at a decent pricepoint.

How is cross chat working for ya? The Sony engineers don't know how to implement it.
