I chose the camaro/mustang because they are historic rivals that were on relatively equal footing. Okay, okay, I'll spell it out for you, I wasn't making a literal comparison, it's an analogy. Now read it again and see if you can find the hidden meaning.

Besides, I don't think you want to make a literal comparison since the mustang is one of Ford's best selling vehicles while the camaro was taken out of production several years ago due to lack of interest.

And for the record, notice my use of the word 'equal'. It's almost like I don't think one console is better than the other... weird.

This guy did his research and i actually looked into some of the points he brought up and found them to be valid. I myself like to do research, especially when i do it to prove the legality of the research of others, and in the end, it turns out that this guy knows what he is talking about. Once again, the ps3 is the best way to go for many reasons and this read only adds on to the list. I really recommend this to others. Although quite extensive, it is worth checking out.

While I understand, or at least hope, that you're kidding with this comment. I have to point out that that is not at all the case. Computer engineers actually use an approximately equal amount of math to computer scientists. Realistically this is usually the case. During schooling the computer engineer has more because he has to take the standard electrical engineering courses as well. There's actually a fairly large difference between computer engineers an scientists. The CS major is responsible for writing the software used on a daily basis by people across the world, where as the CE is responsible for the hardware it all runs off of. The theories and practice behind each, while there are similarities, are largely very different.

Nevertheless, if you read the article he seems to have experience and the education to write what he did. In addition, this is probably the least biased publication that compares the two systems.

But the most important thing that I think everyone needs to understand, and what this guy stated SEVERAL times, is that hardware doesn't matter in the end if the system doesn't have software support.

I think it is a given that the Wii is the weakest with regard to hardware for a "next generation" console. But who knows, it might come out ahead because people might realize that the games are more fun to play.

I don't care about Gears of War, Assassin's Creed, MGS4, or Halo 3 if they only look good but play like crap.

The reason why I like this article is because it shows that even though (in this guy's opinion" that the PS3 is more "powerful" IT DOESN'T MATTER.

I am sick of the fanwhores coming in here and comparing specs because SPECS DON'T MATTER - see the original Xbox v. PS2 war (Xbox a better system, PS2 had all the vast majority of great games).

Seriously, he got alot of things right, but he really is biased. Look at how he runs off his credentials and insults the programming skills of every developer who said the PS3 was too hard to code for. He's saying that they were too cr*p at programming to understand how to use a PS3 to its potential, and claiming he knows how to.

In the real world, people who claim to be better than everyone else are usually full of it.

So many developers tesified that it was difficult to program for, so many developers are not porting their games over to the PS3, so many game cancellations, and very few people have committed their games to the PS3 yet. when was the last time John Carmack made a technologically superior game engine? I have a lot more respect for guys like Jason Rubin and Andy Gavin; they made one of the best game engines in videogame history and yet hardly anyone recognizes them and the team at Naughty Dog for their achievements.

And they're just one example. In fact, Jason Rubin openly critisizes game programmers who are too lazy to learn assembly and SIMD, especially because of the performance rewards that such coding brings. The PS3 is a vector code monster; simple as that. The PS2 excelled at vector code as well, but was a mere stepping stone to what the guys at IBM, Sony, and Toshiba set out to achieve. It's interesting that the SPEs share some of the instructions sets from the Emotion Engine. Sony's got a long road ahead of them but there's no doubt that they'll deliver.

It has ONE core, a single PPE unit. The cell processor is made up of a PowerPC Processing Element (PPE) and 7 (out of 8) functioning Special Processing Elements (SPE). The SPEs are NOT cores, they are reliant on the PPE. The eighth -disabled- SPE is useless, it's not even worth mentioning.

Man, what are people going to say next? I guess they could tape a bunch processors to the outside of a PS3 then tell everyone that it has 50 cores but 49 of them are disabled.

I'll help you pick apart the Microsoft article, it was also horribly biased but that doesn't change the fact that this 'article' is propaganda.

SPEs have neither a memory management unit nor an instruction or data cache and as such they are NOT cores. They are dependent on the PPE core. I didn't say they didn't exist and I didn't say they were useless. The achilles heel of the design is actually the PPE which will need to deal with executing the primary string of code and managing all seven SPEs.

Just as you wouldn't be able to tear your eyes from a train wreck in progress, I did read his write-up from start to finish. He certainly sounds convincing, unless you happen to have read a number of white papers published by IBM beforehand. (you know, the guys that created the cell)

I'm sorry it upsets you when I point out the shortcomings of his (and apparently your) particular paradigm, however, you should try reading a couple dozen white papers before you start talking about embarrassment to the gaming community.

I came to this conclusion: 360 is more powerful (slightly) and the 360 will have better graphics (slightly). PS3 will have (slightly better effects on an never seen before way(RPG magic ect.) and (more space for forests with every tree hand drawn and space left over so the charector in the games has a pare of underware for ever day of the week. At E3 (2005): Sony officially unveiled the PS3 and for the first time and claimed that their Cell processor would be capable of 200 GFLOPS.
Now you might be asking yourself; how did they get that figure? Well from IBM's own white pages of course:

However when physically tested: only 155.5 GFLOP’s were actually achieved (Table 4) with a total efficiency rate of 75.9% (Table 4).
Since the PS3 will only use 7 SPE’s due to manufacturing yield issues, the theoretical peak for the PS3’s Cell processor will be reduced to 176 GFLOP’s; at 25.12 GFLOP’s apiece. Now, assuming the same 75.9% efficiency, we could easily interpolate that the PS3’s Cell CPU will only be capable of 133.6 GFLOP’s.

You see the Xbox 360 has 3 general-purpose dual core CPU's, which generates a proven 115.2 GFLOP’s and is relatively easier for developers to utilize. It should be obvious already that the PS3 is not nearly as far ahead as Sony wants you to believe. In fact, once you take into account the total amount of resources that will be used by their respective operating systems, the PS3 will actually have less available CPU power (for in game graphics, physics, etc) compared to the 360...

I love how he conveniently keeps out the calculations to show performance loss on the 360 due to the operating system. I'd need to look more in depth, and I'm fairly certain its not this simple, but then it is similar to how Microsoft has come by other numbers in the past, if you estimate 6% of the total performance power is lost due to the operating system on the 360, then you can estimate that the 360 only has access to approximately 108 GFlops for games versus the 114.4 that he states for the PS3...needless to say this completely disregards the graphics solutions of both systems which accounts for the vast majority of performance power each has available for graphics...

In marketing this tactic is called "Buy-in" theory - in which a company (in this case Sony) appeals to their existing fanbase and basically lies about their specs, and acts arrogant, in order to get people to buy-in to the notion that the PS3 is worth waiting for. This kind of abuse carried out on the backs of the ignorant masses is why I became a techie. Well that and because I am an economist and therefore a student of game theory and incentives.

When you have become as empowered as I have about the technical aspects of each console - Sony's arrogance and lies becomes an insult to me (as a consumer). What this means is because of the unified memory of the XBOX and the Unified shaders, a Developer has the abiltiy to use the vector processing power of the GPU. The upside is the developer is only forced to use the shaders during times in which they need extra processing power.

Windows Graphic Foundation (WGF) is the next major release of DirectX. It will bring about some changes regarding how shaders and the entire 3D architecture is handled in Windows. Over the course of the evolution from 2.0, 2.x and 3.0 of the pixel and vertex shader models, the abilities of pixel and vertex shaders have become very similar. Originally, pixel shaders lacked the functionality and complexity of vertex shaders. Under WGF 2.0, shader models are identical, and this identical specification makes the unification of pixel and vertex pipelines possible in hardware."

The 360's Xenos GPU is literally a full generation ahead of the PS3's RSX GPU because it is a Windows Graphics Foundation 2.0-compliant GPU, featuring unified shader architecture, and therefore is compatible with future variations of Direct X 10, shader model 4.0, etc. The PS3 is NOT simply because it is not compliant, or in other words it does not have a unified shader architecture!

In current PC GPU's and the RSX - long shader routines have to be broken up into routines that fit inside the shader length as specified. With unified shader architecture, there is just one long shader, rather than lots of shorter ones, there's less performance overhead and more code simplicity, resulting in better performance. To quote ATI developer relations manager Richard Huddy: “Rather than separate pixel and vertex pipelines, we’ve created a single unified pipeline that can do both. Providing developers throw instructions at our architecture in the right way, Xenos can run at 100% efficiency all the time, rather than having some pipeline instructions waiting for others. For comparison, most high-end PC chips (i.e. the RSX) run at 50-60% typical efficiency. The super cool point is that ‘in the right way’ just means ‘give us plenty of work to do’. The hardware manages itself.”

The bottom line is that there will be no GPU that matches the Xenon's graphical feature set until Windows Graphics Foundation 2.0-compliant GPUs, featuring unified shader architecture, arrive from ATI and NVidia – which will be around the same time as Windows Vista. The ramifications of this for the PS3 will be huge, because for example: when the Unreal Engine 4.0 requires the Windows Graphics Foundation 2.0 feature sets - the 360 will be able to run it but the PS3 won't! This is consistent with developers commenting that in the long run the 360 will pull away and out-perform the PS3. Of course it is already outperforming the PS3 by a fairly large (and dare I say embarrassing) margin. LOL

Not surprising when you consider my post #45 and that even current PC GPU’s that far perform the RSX and Xenos in terms of clock speed only have an internal bandwidth of 40 to 50Gbps. The Xenos GPU’s 10mb of embedded D-RAM gives it an internal bandwidth of 256 Gbps! Internal bandwidth by the way IS THE BIGGEST bottleneck for GPU’s and is why the Xenos GPU can produce 1.5 billion vertices a second and the ATI X1900 XTX can only manage 1.3 billion at DOUBLE THE CLOCK SPEED! So the RSX (at 50 mhz) clock speed above the Xenos); with it’s non-unified / inefficient / WGF 2.0 non-compliant architecture – doesn’t even hold a candle to the Xenos!

I could go on and on and on but seriously, just get the 360 – it blows the PS3 out of the water in terms of graphics.

Nowhere have I read developer comments stating that the 360 is going to pull away from the PS3, in terms of graphics, in the long run. In fact everything I've read says the opposite. The 360 is clearly not at all outperforming the PS3 by a large margin. In many cases the games look on par or slightly superior on the PS3. Granted, they should for the money they're charging you. In addition, what you're saying may be true in the case of a standard PC (I say MAY because even that can't be proven until it happens), but is not true at all when applied to the consoles. If PS3 used Windows and Direct X, then again, maybe, but it doesn't. In addition, internal bandwidth between the frame buffer and the GPU is not at ALL the largest bottleneck that a GPU faces...in fact it hardly plays a roll at all.

Generally speaking the Xbox crowd are just trying to correct a point (mistake) made about the spe's. The Xbox people are providing you with the correct info. There were supposed to be eight. Because of low yields, 7 became the target. And one spe is specifically reserved for the OS at all times.

Dead Rising “kills” Xbox 360s?

Dead Rising is a game that just will not stop making headlines. It seems however that the game itself and it’s code may be posing dire consequences to Xbox 360 owners across the globe.

The game has apparently been “killing” or to be more accurate, breaking the 360’s of many gamers who have been indulging in the game as of late. Most of these reports are coming from the USA, as this is the only region where the game is officially available so far. Many reports suggest that the blame for the problem would be the game’s intensive usage of more than a single core of the Xbox 360’s triple-core processor, but considering the fact that many games already have been using all 3 cores intensively, most notably Geometry Wars, this all seems highly unlikely. Whatever the reason, people are frustrated at what seems a structural zombification caused by Capcom’s undead killfest.

I predict more 360’s will fry because of Dead Rising. Because, you know, nobody fu(ks with the undead

We have more on this when the information become clearer, which will only really happen when the game hits more territories and more people boot the full game up. Lets hope this is a case of ‘the squeaky wheel wants the grease’ rather than a real major problem.

I bet come november the same 360 fanatics (not fans, there's a difference) are going to burst onto the PS3 pages again claiming that the reviews are fake, that the games look like N64 titles, or conversely that every video review is showing pre-rendered CG and that Sony should stop lying and show game footage.

If you can't tell the visual difference, watch the gameplay videos. Full Auto 1 had horrid framerate issues while Full Auto 2 is smooth as butter. Actually, I've come to notice something. PS3 titles (which haven't even been released yet) don't have any framerate issues; not even the crappy titles. 360 games on the other hand...well you play them. you can catch the framerate issues constantly. Gears of War, Mass Effect, Too Human, Full Auto, Splinter Cell:Dark Agent, and the Madden and NCAA titles all have clipping, framerate, and DOS (disappearing object syndrome). Ok, so it's not a real term, but the problems are there. Except for Gears, which only has the framerate issue. everything else about that title seems to be perfect. (so...much..blood..yay)

The answer to most parts of your question is what you already know, 360 launch titles were Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero and PGR3, the first two are enitrely current gen with some fancy texturing techniques in the same way as common PC titles do, only PGR3 was something to be reffered as the start of the next0gen that's all...so, such easy to program system, already known techniques and a history of software development, where did it all go when it came to the launch titles of 360 ?!

YOU already know PS3 is difficult to program for as it is new for the devs, but PS2 was even more complicated, and look for yourself that PS2 games win most of the yearly awards, especially the art ones, rendering things that even GPU fitted PCs don't deliver, GT4, Colossus, DMC3, MGS3 and god of war are here to consider. While the achievement with FF-XII is also there for you to understand what levels of visuals are available on even the PS2 without any dedicated GPU. The PS3 with all its difficulties is bringing about some of the finest looking games from day 1, as launch titles, with Resistance, WarHawk, MotorStorm as for the icing and Fatal Inertia, FullAuto 2, Ridge Racer 7, Eye of Judgement, Tekken-6 just for the diversity and Untold Legends Dark Kingdom as an upgrade of an already rnning PSP title. Are these games entirely focused upon normal-mapped texturing techniques ?! Nah, and even you know that those techniques are the ones that definitely give 'pretty pictures' on the web but not necessarily 'good experience' on the way. e.g. Half Life 2 or Doom 3, sucked all the way to the end like an utterly old-school one but yeah one render could blow you away.

So while those texturing techniques are quite exquisite on the PS3, the major focus is only delivering the actual next-gen experience...the procedural synthesis, even only the ground deforming in MotorStorm blows everything MS has to offer uptill yet with its PC based GFX, for that's what a next-gen specific hardware can perform from the very first day, the procedural water, seamless world, gameplay swapping, procedural destruction and volumeric clouds of WarHawk are an entirely different story, and you know, even PGR3 have been compared to GT4 on PS2, so what GTHD would do ?! The entire launch lineup of PS3 including and excluding the first party titles is just stunning as they do so much next-gen stuff rght from the offset, being on a hard to program console. MGS4, FF-XIII and Heavenly Sword and that Level-5 RPG are somethings waiting for the real buzzer next year !

The hard drive is an accesory. I know many people who bought the 299 xbox 360 and then bought the hard drive later. Mainly kids a little older than my son or guys who work hard for a living and don't make a lot and have to budget. Its easier to jump in when you can do it with payments. Thats why people charge on their credit cards. They don't have to pay for it all at once. Same thing with the 360. you don't have to pay 400 all at once. Sure it ends up being more if you do it one piece at a time. But its the same concept with credit cards. Sure you only pay 30 dollars a month for a 300 dollar item. And when its all paid for you probably paid 4 to 5 hundred after interest..ect. Thats just the way it is. But its an easier jump than 400 or 500 or 600 for many people that are on a budget. And like I have been saying. There will be a price drop. All you have to do is look at the history of EVERY console. THey have all dropped by 100 dollars after the year mark. The costs of console manufacturing goes down after the year. So when MS says that the add on and the premium 360 will cost less than any version of the ps3. I take that as either the hd dvd add on will be 100 dollars or the price will drop by 100 and the hd dvd add on will be 150 to 180 still keeping it below the price of the ps3 500 dollar model. And Like I have said. Xbox 360 owners are different than sony fan boys or nintendo fan boys. We actually buy games and accesories for our system more than any system in HISTORY. I don't expect the hd dvd drive to match the 360 hard ware sales. But I expect it to be 1 out of every 3 xbox 360 owners will at some point get one. "When they need it". "when they want it". "But in the meanwhile they can enjoy cutting edge content for 200 or more less than the competition. Get it? Got it? Good.

In my opinion, the PS3's launch games almost universally trounce the 360's launch games, but that doesn't make it so. Others are going to view things differently so I'm not going to be arrogant enough to put forth my opinion as fact there. In addition, you don't need an HDTV to get the most of the PS3 or the 360 for that matter. You can connect each to a PC monitor, and if you have a half way decent monitor that should be fine. Its not ideal, but it works and is fine for personal viewing.

Disc Read Error
Owners of early PS2 models purchased from launch until spring 2002 commonly reported faulty optical drives in their consoles. The earliest drives suffered from a constantly misaligning laser lens but later defects were the result of a shift in voltage to the laser itself. Saturn failed because it was expensive and it was hard to program for. Dreamcast failed because EA and other big name companies would not support it. And it didn't offer the standard at that time in DVD.

Its just the way it is. I have played every console. From the atari 400 to the 2600 to the intellivision...to coleco vision that came with the Smurfs game....and on and on. I don't think there has been one console that I have ever NOT owned and played. I even had the pong system with the round nobs to play pong with. Well said. Thats exactly it. I don't want people to fall for the same trickery with mis information that I did with the ps2. I sold my dreamcast and games to get the ps2 because it was suppose to be 20 times more powerful than the dream cast and 10 times more powerful than a super computer. And they used the same wording...Number crunching and peak performance. And I was super dissapointed when I got home and played the launch games. 6 plus years go by and the only game that I think compared to dream cast games that I loved was God of War. Thats my opinion. But even God of War didn't compare to Halo 2. So when I hear sony using the same number crunching wording and comparission to cutting edge computers and the 360...instead of take their word...I research it and get informed. You can fool me once...shame on me...but not twice. If I would have never had the dreamcast to begin with, I most likely would have been ok with ps2. It was a jump up from the original playstation. And i loved the playstation. But it wasn't better than the dreamcast and it wasn't even close to the xbox. Now with the 360 I'm blown away by the games/graphics/gameplay/and performance of this super console. And I have done a lot of reading up on it and being since I'm in the market for the ps3....I read many articles on many sites regarding it. And from all my information gathering from many different perspectives and comparissons and my own common sense and Sony's history with ME....I can conclude that as it seems they are very close in pixel pushing power but 360 has the advantage with ease of developing and ease on developers pocket books and superior developement tools of the 360. xna, direct x 10, ect.....and of course what you always hear me say....Microsoft has done a good job obtaining and retaining the hardcore gamer. The gamer who buys many games and many accessories. To have a fan base from 5 to 6 million but have 4 games in the top 10 sellers with the competition having 100 plus fan base and 20 million fan base is directly indicative of the type of buyer buys the 360. Sony has no idea and has lost touch with the BULK of thier consumers...for some reason they think sony fans want the best number pusher on the market....they think their same smoke and mirrors stratedy will work like it did last time. It won't. It can't. Because anyone who had a ps2 and an xbox Knew that the xbox was better in every way. So those people are confidant in Ms at this point. Thats why MS gets their hard earned money. Now, with all that said if Sony would have release a console without the blu ray and made it an option with developers having the choice to either use multi dvds and blu ray versions...than that would have been a much better move for them in regards to continuing their dominace with SALES. Because they have never had dominance with quality or graphics. Imagine if sony would have did that and provided a system at 400 dollars. so yeah, there are a few million sony die hards that will break their piggy bank for them regardless of the bad news sony has been getting. And they will brag about the irreleveant 1080p and the extra disc space and larger hard drive. But think about this. I download every game/every add on and haven't even used half of my hard drive in 9 months..And its detatchable so there should be a bigger one coming...my guess is prior to the ps3 launch. We'll see. Bigger hard drive don't effect gameplay, more disc space don't effect gameplay, one more usb port doesn't effect gameplay, the cell is not optimal for gaming until devs learn how to use it and thats 3 to 4 years down the line. By that time tech would have changed drastically. the rsx is last years nvidia computer card in the 6800 with a few extras but yet it hasn't been released and doesn't compare to nvidias new line of computer cards...the 7950 1 gig ram card. So you see my points. Its my opinion mixed with experience mixed with facts.

I never said they drop 99 every year. The first price drop is normally a year or so after launch and its always been 100 dollars. After that it takes a few more years then drops 25 dollars. If you need proof, take a stroll through the engineering campus of any major University in this country. you'll have a major wake up call. We are good at SOME things and terrible at others.
