Sony PS2 Still A Contender In Gaming Market

While Sony battles with Microsoft over which of their next-generation video game consoles will dominate, its seven-year-old PlayStation 2 still has a lot of life in it.

"We are committing funds for PS2 ... we encourage third parties to continue development for PS2. If they bring a PS3 version out, they can bring a PS2 version out as well," David Reeves, head of Sony's European games unit, told Reuters on the sidelines of the Leipzig Games Convention on Thursday.

"There is a lot of money still. What happened last time with PS1 is that they left a lot of money on the table by making the transition too quickly," he said.

No surprise:

$129.99.

Casual-gamer friendly.

Hundreds and hundreds of good games.

PS1 compatibility.

Established name brand.

tplarkin76113d ago

Perhaps Sony should have waited a year or two before launching the PS3. That would have given them a stronger foundation for the PS2 and time to make the PS3 the best it can be. Instead, Sony let Microsoft dictate the console cycle. You have to give MS credit, though. They put out an amazing machine in a short time.

okcomputer6113d ago

More like still the champ. Its still outselling both the ps3 and 360.

Greysturm6113d ago

The only console that might eventually catch up to it right now is the wii. But if it continues to sell at this rate thats gonna take a while...

Kenshin_BATT0USAI6113d ago

Man really PS2 is by far the best gaming experience I had. I still even play it now.

Man the Xbox only had four games which appealed to me, and even the 360 doesn't have much which appeals to me.

N4GayFanturds6113d ago

in the data storage/movie market!

Lame news.

Captain Tuttle6113d ago

Is holding back the PS3. Why should developers tackle the Cell when they can crank out profitable games on familiar hardware? Sony caught in it's own trap...they need the revenue stream from the PS2 but people aren't moving to the PS3.

N64: Recompiled — Creating Native PC Ports Is A Godsend For Game Preservation

"In a time when companies don't care about preserving games, I have high respect for the creators of projects like N64: Recompiled." - Hanzala from eXputer.

it is, i might be finally able to play Snowboard kids 1 full screen ha.

purple10113h ago

il beat you to the ski-lift,

framerate on snowboard kids was shocking, do you remember./?

talking of shocking framerate and kart racers style games,
Sony had a gem on ps3, with 'Modnation Racers' but again, framerate was so terrible, still fun though, indeed, when is drifting sideways not fun, the answer is never. we have not seen enough of that game, technically some people made race tracks/games in dreams and little big planet etc, but its just not the same,!!! grrrrr

morning rant over.

here, relive some ,memories. https://www.youtube.com/wat...

itBourne11h ago

The load time on ModNation where also excruciatingly long... But man oh man I wish that game took off more, so much fun! Could turn off garbage rubber banding, I had karts with 100's of stickers to design some crazy cool stuff, custom tracks. Fantastic undeappreciated game

gold_drake7h ago

SK1 had a fairly good framerate. sk2 maybe not so much ha

Redgrave7h ago

Some food for thought:

Would you donate your physical copy of a really rare/expensive cartridge (Conkers's BFD, Bomberman 64 Second Attack, Ogre Battle 64, the two Castlevania titles, etc) to those managing this project for the greater good of getting them preserved online for all to experience at some point?

UltimateOwnage7h ago

As long as it meant they never took money from Patreon and invited a DMCA takedown / lawsuit by Nintendo to take it all away. After seeing the whole debacle with Yuzu I now question how long any of these teams can maintain game preservation efforts through emulator development, or otherwise.

franwex3h ago

I mean. They may borrow them…

Profchaos1h ago

Is it realistically needed though I would not personally give anyone my old carts for games that are already persevered and easily available online

The snippet of ray tracing at the end of the og trailer was low-key amazing. I found out thanks to Nerrel who also made a texture pack for MM, and i can't wait to see how much more great this game will be in the near future. With model swaps, ray tracing, retextures, and a more quicker process than decompilation, it's gonna bring new life to N64 games.

Profchaos1h ago

There might need to be a bit of clarification recompilation is not the same as decompilation.

This is basically a container to excite the rom within but allows for all sorts of beat additions and tricks like new lighting effects such as ray tracing to be added.

But decompilation would ultimately be king as it allows for a widespread porting capabilities and uses the assets from games to build a native install for PC or whatever the target system is e.g Mario 64 for PC or sonic mania for psvita / wii

Too dated in my book. The AI is way too unpredictable to be acceptable today. It's definitely a game of its time.

Jingsing3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Agreed with those sentiments. The quality of the CPU controlled characters make or break a stealth game and they are pretty poor in all the Splinter Cell games by today's standard. This is what led me to playing Spies vs Mercs all the time in later games just to get a better stealth experience from a real person. Arguably Sony are making better stealth games albeit not Tom Clancy stuff.

TheProfessional3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

You should stick with fortnite or one of the countless bloodborne style games then. What a joke.

rlow13d ago

I had a good time with the game. It is a product of its time. But when it came out it was a must have game for a lot of people. I wish Ubisoft would make another game in the series or at least a reboot.

vgvill3d ago

They are making a remake, I think. I loved the original game when it was released, but I tried to play it again in recent years and just couldn't get on with it. The same with the older Hitman games.

PrecursorOrb3d ago

Yeah chaos theory still holds up though I gotta say. If you’re a fan of the series I highly suggest you go back to that one. Ubi has said they are remaking sc for “modern audiences”. I don’t have a lot of faith for the future of that company

Chocoburger3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Due to the lack of modern stealth games, and me constantly playing the MGS series, I've been looking for alternative stealth games to play, and went back and re-played the SC series recently. I wouldn't call SC1 or SC:PT masterpieces, there are AI issues, they're very much trial-and-error games, and that can lead to a lot of frustration. I also found the stories in this series to be boring, uninteresting, and just sloppily told. Cinematics are also of poor quality for both in-game scenes and CG cut-scenes, the soundtrack didn't leave any impression on me either.

Chaos Theory is better, but there was still a lot of room for improvement, and Double Agent (old gen ver.) was a sloppy mess that ended up a regression from CT. But still, at least they tried back then, these days Ubi-junk doesn't even try to make good games!

Name someone that isn't trying to look us these days maybe cdpr.

Take two, ubi and yes even PlayStation are pushing us to own nothing and be happy with our live service ad injected games on a sub so they can raise prices at will and take access away when they see fit.

If it keeps up I'll be a full time retro gamer and this industry will be crashing hard

As rediculas as it sounds we need government reforms to defend consumer rights
