Ninja Theory: Uncharted 2 Animation Was 'Overdone'

SPOnG: "Ninja Theory co-founder Tameem Antoniades has faith in the motion capture and animation techniques used for its upcoming adventure title Enslaved. So much so, that in the inevitable comparison to Uncharted 2, the developer opined that the animation in Naughty Dog's blockbuster 'overdoes itself.'"

I guess having the record for most number of Game of the Year awards is 'overdone' too huh?

Get stuffed Ninja Theory.

nix4984d ago

"Basically, we use motion capture for the performance drama and hand animation for movement in game. It seems to work well. But that happens in movies as well - it's fine that the animation is overdone in places."

don't go by the headline!

Edward-Kraken4984d ago

I'm seriously starting to hate NT now.

HammockGames4984d ago

Going a step further, I wish more games were "overdone" like this.

aaron58294984d ago

nobody dissed Naughty Gods.

hay4984d ago

Sensational headline, nobody attacks ND.

Since UC2 played like a dream it's not a problem right? Actually I didn't like the Enslaved animations' feel which means Ninja Theory isn't really an authority for me on this field.
They worked with Andy Serkis and pro mocap studio but still... They fell a bit to short to criticize IMO.

Red_Orange_Juice4984d ago

u ppl suck, how about reading the article?

Sarcasm4984d ago

Ah things taken out of context, nothing new here.

People need to calm down.

MrMccormo4984d ago

Journalists claimed (and Ninja Theory hinted) that Enslaved's graphics would rival Uncharted 2's. Nope, didn't happen.

Now they want to backpedal and say the mo-cap was overdone?

Next in healine news: PopCap Games says that Killzone 3's graphics are too detailed.

Ju4984d ago (Edited 4984d ago )

"nobody attacks ND." No ?

Then what does that mean, quote: '"So you have three different people working on a single performance, which I don't think is the right way to do it if you want to create a believable character," Antoniades explained.'

Obviously he disagrees how they did their animations. ND might have had a perfectly good reason why they did it that way. Maybe he's just jealous they can actually have 3 people working on animations.

When he delivers what ND delivered, I might take him seriously. All I see that Enslaved is not even close - while they obviously saved money in their production.

nix4984d ago

i put it up right up front so that people won't just start venting out but hey... i was wrong!

outrageous4984d ago

The pre-rendered " simulations " as ND likes to call them are definitely over done. Uncharted 1 had 80 pre-rendered simulations and Uncharted 2 had 564...the definition of overdone. If Naughty Dog wants to make a pre-rendered movie...they should. If they want to make a video they should try to make game play and not pre-rendered sims every other minute. Every time Indiana Drake opened a door, jumped off a ledge or on a ledge...there was a cut scene.

ND was honest and tried to explain how near impossible it is to get the slow as molasses Cell to even render a exploding barrel let alone many of the set pieces in UC 2 that where the equivalent of a Hollywood green screen technique. The hotel exploding, the train background...etc...good thing they had all the space on the blu-ray to make there movies. You wouldn't be able to get away with that nonsense on a DvD and would have to rely on good ole gameplay or in engine cuts to make it through the game...O_o

raztad4984d ago (Edited 4984d ago )

Wow Outregous sounds very desperate.

He wrote so much BS I'm not even sure if I should address it. I'm gonna say that Cell >>>> anything on the xbox doing physics calculations.

LeShin4984d ago

They did it on purpose to get this sort of reaction! The journalist question to NT was VERY leading as well.

Good to see video game journalism at it's best
/sarcasm

If you want people to click on your website for news, instead of picking flamebait titles why not just get good stories?!

XactGamer4984d ago

Chromer's comment is what happens when you just read the title and not the interview/article.

TVippy4984d ago

Their shitty demo 'supports' their words. Boycot Enslaved for this blasphemy!!

shoddy4984d ago

It mean to say ND work hard and it overkill the animation quality.

8thnightvolley4984d ago

thou i would say its an opinion, but seriously dont think UC2 was over done coz its one damn beautifully animated game. lets see ninja theory's result with enslaved if its anyway good funny how i now hear they are using the unreal engine 3... makes me qiver in pain.

XactGamer4984d ago

Some of you guys seriously need to read the news and not the title. How many more fools is it going to take?

topdawg1224984d ago

I don't feel confident in these guys making the new Devil May Cry game.

tinybigman4984d ago (Edited 4984d ago )

I loved Heavenly Sword but you need to shut your mouths. You do your animation the way you want, and let other developers do animation the way they want.

N311V4984d ago

Overall graphically Enslaved is no where near UC. However when I played the demo I certaintly noticed how expressive the facial animations were, the amount of emotion conveyable with the technique they have used is fantastic in my opinion. This is what I believe is being referred to by "staying true to the actor". They have used mo-cap on the actual facial expressions rather than have an animator create them to match the voice.

"Facial Motion Capture or Performance Capture is the process of electronically converting the movements of a person's face into a digital database using cameras or laser scanners. This database may then be used to produce CG (computer graphics) computer animation for movies, games, or real-time avatars. Because the motion of CG characters is derived from the movements of real people, it results in more realistic and nuanced computer character animation than if the animation was created manually."

tdogg060519914984d ago (Edited 4984d ago )

That is why NT is not GOTY Material, ND used all the resources they could to make an amazing realistic cinematic experience, wait until they see LA Noire their tech is Waaaaaay overdone lol

Dipso4984d ago

Read the article, he's simply discussing the animation methods used and how he feels its not as natural a method as the capture techniques they use. Just more tabloid game journalism, Ninja Theory have had nothing but high praise for Naughty Dog's work. Leave the schoolyard bickering to the publishers, developers have far too much respect to be getting in pissing contests with each other.

pr0digyZA4984d ago

well said people must learn to read and stop jumping on the bandwagon.

DaTruth4984d ago (Edited 4984d ago )

So what you're saying is, people should fall into this flame-bait trap and give them the hits they were looking for when they made that flame-bait headline!

Quagmire4984d ago

Dont use logic on N4G. makes too much sense.

Dipso4984d ago

@Da Truth

Haha..fair point, but personally I thought it more important to get the truth out rather than worry about how many hits Spong might score off this one. There's kids on here saying they won't buy Enslaved now because of these out of context quotations!? N4G..often moronic but rarely dull.

Ju4984d ago

I probably won't get Enslaved because it's just a sh!tty game. Sorry. Over-hyped, trying to ride the wave of other games and still a total step back from HS. I wanted to see all issues in HS fixed. Instead we got a game - 5 years after - which is a complete let down. I understand they were struggling - HS production was too expensive for them. It was the first cinematic game - but Enslaved just does not improve a single thing upon that game. A real shame.

You know, instead of citing other games all the time (like ND, etc) they could simply point out what they (!) improved compared to their own previous work. How hard is that ? Would probably not sell as well...

Redempteur4984d ago (Edited 4984d ago )

i read it .. and i don't get them ..so what they used 3 team to have the most realistic ( and freedom while créating the scenes of their game ) ..

Aren't they a little jalous they can't afford this given how Heavenly sword was a financial sinking ship for them ??

i mean what's overdone ? Heavy rain did something quite similar ( record the moves ,and then the voices) was that overdone ? because i'd take "overdone " everyday .

i feel i like that " overdone" style because enslaved animation was stiff and lacked detail in the cutscenes as opposed to the 2 games i mentionned above

Ju4984d ago

Ask him how he records lipsync animations in different languages the way he suggests.

Redoing mocap for every single language ??

Corrwin4984d ago

I can't help but think Ensalved could have looked much better had NT stuck to one platform.

Ult iMate4984d ago

Will fixing Dante be considered as an overdoing? )))

BYE4984d ago

They fixed him, Dante no longer has white hair.

/jk

As for the article, I could imagine doing every cutscene in 3 takes being much more expensive and time consuming. But that's Naughty Dog's problem, in the end they delievered a good product.

salinidus4984d ago

amazingly great product with smooth platforming (if you played the enslaved demo you know what i mean).

Like I said before, buying Ninja Theory was one of the smartest moves by Microsoft. Games looks incredible.

Rynxie22h ago

Unfortunately, their games aren't big sellers. Will MS shut them down if hellblade 2 sells below expectations?

outsider162419h ago

If it sells below expectations, then i expect it to come to PS5.

Elda19h ago

The game may be a critical hit & still can get shut down. I highly doubt most XB owners will buy this game including the fact that it's digital only at $50. Most folks that have Gamepass will play the game through the sub service. If the reviews tomorrow are just average to low then that's another problem.

Obscure_Observer21h ago

"Like I said before, buying Ninja Theory was one of the smartest moves by Microsoft. Games looks incredible."

Indeed.

Just a few hours to go

I can´t wait!

z2g1d 1h ago

badass. already installed via gamepass. if its as great as the first one I will pay for the whole game.

glenn197920h ago

I just don't understand why all the down votes

jwillj2k41d ago

Here we go again. Is this a game or a choose your own adventure???

purple1011d ago

if you choose left, turn to page 39, if you proceed forward, turn to page 43, to turn right, page 209, you finished the book early,

no but seriously this looks like Microsofts first hit, or should I say, first game of standout quality.

jwillj2k41d ago

Never questioned the quality. Question is will there be a need for the controller.

anast19h ago

The time machine 'choose your own' were awesome.

Tedakin22h ago

If it's anything like the first game, you will spend a lot of timing walking and solving puzzles, with some fights thrown in.

Elda1d ago

LOL! Didn't send any shivers down my spine but I'll demo it after midnight tonight through Gamepass to see what it's giving.

Obscure_Observer22h ago

After the midnight? I see...

Day one as expected for another game that you said you had zero interest.

Elda19h ago(Edited 19h ago)

Finally making a re-appearance. When the heat was on about XB closing studios you were crickets on all articles. Now that the heat has died down all of a sudden you're here on an XB exclusive article or should I say a timed exclusive...lol!! If you must know I can demo this game at midnight because the University I work at is closed for the summer so I can play video games until my heart's content until the end of August when I go back to work. That's what Gamepass is for, knowing I would not spend $50 on Hellblade 2 because the first one I thought was boring so I'm going to see if this one is still boring or is it interesting by demoing the game.

Elda19h ago

Why not I have a year subscription to Gamepass, I don't have to spend $50 on a digital only game that I may not like including I'm on a lengthy vacation from work.

rlow11d ago

It looks amazing, I’m hoping the reviews are solid. You can tell the studio really poured their heart and soul into this one.

How is it going to sell well when it's also releasing on gamepass 🤔

Sephiroushin12d ago

Meant better to sell the studio and not closing it 🤦🏻 not to sell more games….
and games are sold anyways, you can buy it on xbox (not recommended if you got gamepass) but many pc gamers prefer to buy on steam than deal with the xbox app or pc gamepass!

On a side note to OP, the sales of studios wont happen though, especially when they want to retain the IPs, and well nobody is gonna buy a studios without its IPs; the other publishers that want a certain dev from the studio that are closing on their team can try to grab them as soon as they see they notice of the studio.

RaidenBlack12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

@Sephiroushin
Well hypothetically speaking, Ninja Theory can be sold to Sony at a lower rate sans the Hellblade IP.
Sony can then welcome them to work on the Heavenly Sword IP, which they still own.
Will be a nice proposition for Sony who can continue to offer a God of War-like hack n slash in their portfolio via Heavenly Sword 2, whilst Cory Barlog & co. decides to take a break from the God of War IP & venture some other genres.
On top of that, Ninja Theory was also interested in a sequel to Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and such Sony can come to a deal with Namco Bandai regarding the Enslaved IP.

badz14911d ago

selling the studio wouldn't be an attractive offer unless they come with their IPs. MS wants to keep these IPs, so even if MS is selling just the studio, no one would wants them

Lightning7713d ago

Because they're next come next year. HB2 won't hit some impossible metric within MS so they're getting axed in 2025. Leave gaming now MS.

XiNatsuDragnel12d ago

Ninja theory might as well be gone in 2025 at this rate

notachance12d ago

Every xbox studio is in danger now because there’s just no way they’re gonna rake in big money from game sales because of gamepass, even CoD was rumored to not come to gamepass because it would canibalize their sales number.

neutralgamer199212d ago

If they are smart they don’t put COD on GP day one. It’s one of the best selling games on yearly basis

Hofstaderman12d ago

Satya will make sure that doesnt happen. As you rightly put it; why kill the cash cow?

But then again, it is MS after all.....

thesoftware73012d ago

I agree and disagree. They should not put it on GP, but CoD makes real money from the overpriced MTX that people buy for over a year. They also have it all linked up to the Mobile CoD, which will incentivize Twitch spending from consumers.

neutralgamer199212d ago

Software

That’s true but keep in mind COD is the best selling or top 3 selling game every year. So yes micro transactions money is there but so are billions more

They should have tiers of GP subscriptions and the higher end tier received AAA games while everyone else gets them in 60 days

MontyeKristo11d ago

Wouldn't putting it on Gamepass be smarter? Cod is typically played, I believe, for far longer than 6 months.. if you get everyone playing the game for a year, on Gamepass, you've essentially doubled your profit. $10 a month for a year $120 compared to selling the game once for $60.

Not to mention MT's, on top of it. Sell on PS5, PC and Switch, keep it on Gamepass for Xbox and PC. Much smarter in my opinion..

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 11d ago
-Foxtrot12d ago

Also if you punish a studio for releasing a great critically acclaimed game which won some awards then what chance does anyone have

Elda12d ago

After this mess, I highly doubt the next installment of COD will be on Gamepass day one. It'll probably land on Gamepass 6 months after release date.

Noskypeno12d ago

Like I said earlier, I wouldn't even mind. There's a good selection of games on GP already, and it gives me time to play my backlog of games while allowing the games that need to sell millions of copies to make a profit a chance to succeed, a win win scenario.

badz14911d ago

not putting CoD on GP is sort of a violation of their own marketing though. they said ALL MS 1st party games will be on GP day 1, not some. CoD is 1st party, so to not put it on GP day 1 would be considered as false marketing.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 11d ago
Rynxie12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

Ninja theory games were never big sellers. I could be wrong, but I doubt hellblade 2 will sell millions. I would rather they go independent and make heavenly sword 2.

solideagle12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

heavenly sword is Sony owned IP. this will never happen as original didn't sell enough...

Wikipedia: "In 2008, it was reported that a sequel to Heavenly Sword was in-development at SCE Studio Cambridge, but was canceled due to Sony no longer seeing it as a commercially viable product"

Flewid63812d ago (Edited 12d ago )

I remember. I feel like the amount of time & technology that has passed would make a sequel a big seller now. The game has enough legacy recognition to build hype.

Cacabunga43d ago

It is a good studio.. i really enjoyed their dmc game that i platinumed it.
I did not try hellblade, because it doesnt tell me much.. Enslaved was very mehhh
Heavenly Sword was good not great. Amazing graphics back in the day but so repetitive and not so engaging in the long run.

stoney10143d ago

I really enjoyed Enslaved and Heavenly Sword back in the day. Wish they'd return to that sort of game. Hellblade isn't really for me to be honest. Not saying it's not a good game, I just couldn't get into it.

Popsicle43d ago (Edited 43d ago )

That is fair. I enjoyed Hellblade but can definitely see how it isn’t for everyone.

Would like to see how Heavenly Sword would have turned out if developed today. It’s easy to forget that games like Heavenly Sword were unprecedented and in their infancy.

shinoff218342d ago (Edited 42d ago )

Enslaved has been their favorite game for me. Loved the atmosphere.

1nsomniac43d ago

Heavenly sword was a staggeringly good game!! One of the most memorable of the PS3 generation in my opinion.

Babadook743d ago (Edited 43d ago )

Heavenly sword was good. It had ambitious graphics and as a result the frame rate suffered and as a result the gameplay suffered. But the story was phenomenal. Great acting, especially Andy Serkis as the king.

Jingsing43d ago (Edited 43d ago )

"Microsoft" we all read between the lines. We have seen the exact same thing happen with many of their other acquisitions

InUrFoxHole42d ago

Jesus man! Try reading the article at least.

cthulhucultist43d ago

One thing that pleasantly surprised me, was the Switch port, as back then it was my only console. The graphics were amazing and the artistic design helped a lot to enhance the visuals.I took some really impressive screen shots while playing which I still revisit them from time to time to remind me what a capable developer (QLOC) can achieve with weaker hardware.
