How 3D Killed Killzone 3

One of my favorite shooters has taken a plunge into the 3rd dimension. I can’t say I’m overly excited about this transition, however it does have a few benefits, along with some huge flaws. Now that 3D is infesting gaming like a nest of cockroaches overtaking a dirty kitchen, one can only hope it’s worth a gamers’ time and money to invest in the return of the old technology.

He could of been a bit more mature about the title, 3D can hardly kill Killzone 3 if it's completely optional.

movements4980d ago (Edited 4980d ago )

The game isn't even out yet but 3D killed it? Wow.

Windex4980d ago

if this guy doesnt want it, he just dont have to buy it...

but since this is my fav game, i am buying it.

and Lol. since when does extra features=bad thing??

this guy is an idiot

paintsville4980d ago

Sony pushing 3d when 3d tv's and active shutter glasses are so expensive just doesn't make sense. Sure it's very innovative but most average gamers probably won't or can't afford to make the move to 3d right now.

Infernostew4980d ago

Optional

op·tion·al
–adjective

1. left to one's choice; not required or mandatory: Formal dress is optional

2. leaving something to choice.

---
Hope that helps you in the long run.

theKiller4980d ago (Edited 4980d ago )

man... too many 360 fanboys writing on the net these days!!

is there any regulations and requirements on selecting applicants to write these articles?

it remains me of too much variety and options is a bad things but only for ps3 exclusives cough*gamespot on ratchet and clank*cough

3D is just an extra option for the game!! it wont change the original content intended for the gamers for 2D TVs!! some people would love to play 3D games and some not!! so this option is for those who love 3D!!

get over it buddy!!

sikbeta4980d ago

Bwahahaha... the game is not even out yet and this crap is starting to come out from some lame sites....Unbelievable....

paintsville4979d ago

I'm fully aware that the 3d is op·tion·al, as you pointed out. Being a free lance journalist I'm also fully aware that it's an adjective. But putting 3d into games stretches development time and adds cost. At the present time 3d equipment is very expensive. The bulk of Sony's demographic (people they're trying to sell too..hope that helps you) doesn't currently own 3d sets and glasses and will therefore have to purchase them. Of this group the majority probably won't or can't buy them. Given that 3d adds to development time and cost Sony will also incur an opprotunity cost by extending development time brought on by not releasing the game earlier. Higher cost and longer time for optional development to reach very limited niche market vs lower cost shorter development minus 3d to reach target demographic. From a business point of view this doesn't make sense.
I hope this helps you in your future business endeavors.

frankymv4979d ago

My God whoever wrote this article is ignorant. If you don't want 3D, just don't use it.

A Cupcake for Gabe4979d ago (Edited 4979d ago )

As a free lance journalist = posting opinions on N4G?

3D means even if you don't use it, your resolution will be doubled without it. 3D makes 2D look twice as great. So in the end the 3D is still a win.

nix4979d ago

first - it's 'to' not "they're trying to sell too.."

second.. going by what the state is - majority of gamers still use SDTV to play games... i think devs should stop making games with HD in mind. right?

http://www.joystiq.com/2010...

skrug4979d ago

@paintsville

I hope you're not one of the ones bitching about Sony taking out OtherOS, since not alot of people uses OtherOS and as you said " Higher cost and longer time for optional development to reach very limited niche market".

Biggest4979d ago

I'm still trying to figure out where higher development time and costs hurts the person playing the game. Trust me on this one. . . With or without 3D, Killzone 3 would be $60 at retail. Article is stupid by the way.

nycredude4979d ago

Paintsville

I think you need to work on your writing skills if you want to be a successful journalist bro.

paintsville4979d ago (Edited 4979d ago )

I didn't realize that simply making a business observation and then posting my opinion..noun by the way LOL..would cause such a stir. Hey if waiting longer for games to include an option that you'll probably never use is ok with you then so be it. LOL.
Wow I never knew that there was such an aggressive tendency on this site toward anyone that said ANYTHING disagreeing with what Sony was doing no matter how arbitrary and/or minor it was. I thought that this was a site where we could express opinions, noun again, being a journalist, astronaut, surgeon, accountant, truck driver, or any other occupation.
I'm really shocked at the eruption from ps3/sony followers and I have to say, greatly disappointed.

nackno4979d ago

you being a "free lance" journalist should know its spelled freelance. but yeah you probably have an editor.

nix4979d ago (Edited 4979d ago )

it's called 'opinion', the noun one. 'maybe' it could just be that more people disagree with you.

EDIT: @shadow (below) - lol.

shadow27974979d ago

Don't worry paintsville, I agree with you. I hate when others invest in expensive new technology that is far from mainstream. Like the television. Or the computer. Or color television. Or the internet.

Clearly, people should have waited for those technologies to be mainstream and cheaper before adding content for them. Obviously this was terrible business sense and hurt the consumer in the long run.

The rest of you can go back to using internet on your portable phones and watching TV in high definition. I'm going to go have some real fun and throw rocks at bigger rocks.

/sarcasm

nveenio4979d ago

Three years ago, everyone thought Sony was crazy for including a BluRay player and HDMI port in the PS3 because it made the machine "so expensive". But here we are... The PS3 ushered millions of HDTVs into homes along with securing the success of the BluRay format (which makes Sony loads of moolah).

Using the PS3 to usher 3D technology into homes is a super smart move. It will convince me to upgrade, and I know that I'm not alone.

MerkinMax4979d ago (Edited 4979d ago )

beardpapa4979d ago (Edited 4979d ago )

A freelance journalist is expected to follow the rules of proper English. You don't major and master in English only to fail at it. You practice what you preach.

@inveni0

yea talk about crazy. HDMI on the ps3 was such a foreign thing. Look at it now. Tv sets with 3+ HDMI. What's crazier? I haven't gotten a home theater set for so long that I just upgraded a few days ago and the box contained.... optical cables! Not the old school red/white audio cables but OPTICAL. Times have changed.

3D is optional in the game...

rdgneoz34980d ago

Yep, people just love to complain about features that are optional. They're not forced to use it or buy what you need to make use of it, but they just love to complain about it. What happened to the days when people were happy about free additional features and not getting nickle and dimed out the @$$ for things already on the disk?

ravinash4979d ago

You don't have to go out and buy a 3D TV to play this, its just nice if you have one already.

Is this guy crying because their making something he can't use.
grow up!

Infernus4979d ago

I'm still not convinced by 3DTV's.

I don't think that what they bring to the table is actually worth the massive pricetag. Maybe in a couple of years when the prices drop I'll be more interested, but right now I'm happy with a 'standard' HDTV :)

raztad4980d ago (Edited 4980d ago )

Flamebait title just for teh hitz.

The article is very, very positive overall. He mentions the ghosting effect that occurs when you rotate your head playing in 3D. Most likely it will be addressed by release time. Game is just about to go beta.

tacosRcool4980d ago

Well 3D for games is gonna be totally different. And yes it is optional so why the bitching from this guy who supposedly loves Killzone?

Nihilism4980d ago

It might be optional but all the streaming or visual reductions that were enforced to make sure it ran good in 3d are not going to all of a sudden disappear, the game doesn't have visual 'settings'.

nickjkl4980d ago

what visiual reductions

are you talking about the reductions that effect 3d only

UnwanteDreamz4980d ago (Edited 4980d ago )

Yet it looks better graphically then 99% of console shooters. So what was your point

Nihilism4980d ago

My point is that it is not a big step up from KZ2 at all, and that without 3D it would look better. Sure you can chose to turn 3D off, but everyone who plays it 3d or not loses quality as a result of 3d.

n4gno4979d ago

"not a big step up from kz2" is enough to look better then 100% of console shooters (and even without "step up" at all).

Anderson84979d ago (Edited 4979d ago )

fair enough if its not a big step.. but a step up from kz2, which is already far ahead of everything else out there, is still a huge step in the right direction.

nickjkl4979d ago

except 3d optimization helps make 2d even better

they might not be adding as much process intensive effects but the fact that the engine will be running alot smoother than in killzone 2 is enough for me not to mention its going to be alot sharper since they are not using that blurry mess they call AA and are instead using mlaa

i bet you if they took another year to optimize they could get killzone 2 running in 60fps with no res drop although they might have to take back some effects to speed up the time it would take to render the frame depending on hwo much they have truly coded for the ps3

the only thing they could do to make killzone better is increase view distance which was killzone 2 true major problem

KingKiff4979d ago

dammit man only one bubble now??? WTF!?

Bubble this man up, he has been troll attacked.

jack_burt0n4978d ago

@dchalfont

Do you just make stuff up as you go!? KZ3 when running in stereoscopic 3d scales its memory allocation, resolution and refresh rate.

So you just posted a whole load of bogus information, and the biggest leap for KZ3 is that the environments are all streamed.

travelguy2k4980d ago (Edited 4980d ago )

I remember all the 360 fans saying that the 360 was great because it gave gamers options. Like wifi-option, HDD-option, HD-DVD-option.

Now that the PS3 has an "Option.... its a bad thing. Sony doesn't even charge for this option. (free update)

I mean really, 3D TV's are not even that expensive, they are the same cost as a full HD tv was 2 years ago, and about 50% more than a regular tv. In a year it'll be even less and there will be more content out there. I just don't understand people. 3D tv will not get cheeper if it does not have content and people don't buy it. So the fact the Sony is bring the content is helping the whole industry and eventually us all save money. Its optional, people that can afford it now will buy it, and thus reduce the price for the rest of us next year and the year after that. The sooner it comes out and becomes mainstream, the soon the rest of us can afford it.

tinybigman4980d ago

Whine, whine, whine its optional if you don't like it, don't use it.

fr0sty4979d ago

It's an immature article all the way through. Acting as if 3D is "infesting like roaches" etc. and that it's an "old technology" is stupid. First of all, every 3dtv out there is a fully capable 2d set also, so even when 2d sets are phased out in favor of 3d, the author won't be forced into accepting any of it. Second, the tech used to deliver 3D in killzone 3 is by far not old and is quite state of the art in reality. It would have not been even remotely possible just a few years ago, both on a console and TV hardware level (the 3d standard was only recently finalized into HDMI 1.4, and no video connection technology available to consumers prior to HDMI 1.4 can support the bandwidths needed for HD 3D video). And yes, optional. 3D is optional to everyone, at the TV level, at the console level, at the individual game level... optional.

avengers19784979d ago

Yes it's an option, and I don't care what anyone has to say about it KZ3 is a day one purchase for me.
People are just trying to destroy it before it because a huge hit.

MNicholas4979d ago

It significantly enhances perception of movement, lighting and shadows. What's more millions of years of evolution have made our brains particularly good at taking two slightly different images and combining them in our brains to extract hidden information.

For example, university studies have shown that camouflaged objects are much easier to detect in stereoscopic images.

The problem GG will face is that the few people who have 3D tvs will have a significant advantage over their 2D competitors. It could be considered and unfair advantage which may result in less skilled people beat better players who don't have access to a 3D tv.

Perhaps they should do is restrict 3D gamers to competing with other 3D gamers.

thats way more to the point than the kiddie rage of the author

solidjun54980d ago

They could write all what they want. I just wish N4G would filter the crap that comes through here. :-/

Still looks secure 2 gens later... one of my favorite ps3 moments. With 3D and move the game is on another level

MadLad1119d ago

PC almost always ends up the best place to play games, even if it takes a while.

What would you rather play decades down the line? A game at a fixed resolution and frame, considering you have a working disc, and the hardware?
Or run it on an emulator that can update the experience all around, and let you use whatever control input you prefer?

If you insist on the former, it's really only for the sake of nostalgia.

Applejack1119d ago

I disagree. The main draw for consoles has always be the simplicity of just putting the disc in / downloading it and playing without worrying about anything else. The average person just wouldn’t want to deal with emulation even though it’s very important for preservation.

Terry_B1119d ago

Even emulators are super simple to use.

jukins1119d ago

Youre getting flak because people on here thibk of themselves as pc wizards. But honestly most poeple try and go get emulators and romz they end up with malware.. yes theyre "easy" if you know the basics but alot of people dont. That said the fact that its taken nearly 20 years to get a sustantially better experience for ps3 games than on its native system shows the complexity of getting bc to work. Sony, if they have any intention, should just invest in a vastly better psnow experience.

1119d ago
Vegamyster1119d ago

jukins

Most people who emulate don't get malware, you'd have to be going to some weird sites for that to happen, heck years ago people were getting sketchier ad's resulting in malware warning on this site if you didn't have a ad-blocker lol.

SinkingSage1119d ago

Can't get malware if you legally dump your own games, which you should.

Rachel_Alucard1119d ago (Edited 1119d ago )

That's fine if that's the main draw, but it doesn't make it a better experience, just a preference. Having the freedom to do the things you can do on PC is what the appeal of PC is. Buying a game on PC means you never have to worry about the console makers just deciding the next hardware shouldn't support the generation anymore, which means everything you bought is stuck on that hardware instead of moving up with everything else. Nintendo uses this tactic to keep reselling the same games over and over at inflated prices. Sony cut all previous gens off the PS4 and sold it back to people in a poor attempt with PSnow. While the PS5 supports PS4 games, that may not be the case in the next gen after this. No to mention shutting off all the previous stores and updates completely. Even MS stopped making new BC titles at some point, so now there's a big list with 17 pages of titles that are not playable on Xbone and are just trapped on older gen. That's not a problem on PC, the reverse happens where you only have to worry if your hardware can play the newest releases at ultra with no issue.

Sciurus_vulgaris1297d ago

The PS3 is difficult to emulate. PS3 backwards compatibility on PS5 would require translation from PowerPC to x86. Additionally the PS5 likely would have to mimic the PS3’s GPU and CPU.

This is what pops up on my web browser. So I can't even read the site. So, forget that. They don't need my data.

But let's get something straight. OG Xbox had around 1,001 games. How many are BC on Series X? **39** THIRTY NINE. Come on! That's wack BC. You can't tell me that's a complete list. Talking about commitment. Game preservation. Ridiculous. Covers nothing.

How many games released on Xbox 360? Around 2085. How many are BC?
568. That's it. Around 1,517 are **MISSING** Stop playing. Tired of that nonsense.

Anyway, the only games I really want from PS3 that would be awesome are Motorstorm and MGS4. I'll take BC. I'll take a remaster. I'll take a remake. If not those, then Killzone 2. And in VR, maybe Sports Champions, House of the Dead Overkill and the Time Crisis games.

That's all I need. But we've gone over BC again and again in every possible way. It wasn't that important because Sony sold 115 million consoles without it. That's proof enough with no outcry. And PS5 has damn near all 4,000+ PS4 games BC. It's not PS1,PS2 and PS3. But that's plenty. I'll take more but you get what you get.
