Irate gamer sends Epic Games broken Gears of War 2 disk with a message

Ex: To say that the 2008 launch of Gears of War 2's multiplayer went smoothly would be a bit of an overstatement. The online portion of the game was filled with bugs and lag that made it less enjoyable than the original to some and is something that Epic Games is still trying to fix today. One gamer had enough though and sent Cliff Bleszinski and Epic Games his Gears of War 2 disk along with a message.

Funny thing:

SOCOM and Gears 2 launched around the same time. SOCOM got absolutely slammed for its crappy servers. Reviews did not make a peep about Gears 2's lag. SOCOM's lag has been fixed, but Gears 2's lag is still around.

SOCOM was online online though so a having crappy netcode at launch is kinda a major issue... though I agree socom is great now and should really have been re-reviewed after it was patched.

My 2 biggest gripes with Gears 2:

Next to Halo, Gears is just about all the 360 has going for it in my opinion. I am expecting Left 4 Dead to release on the PS3 in time now that Valve is warming up to the PS3

The lag wouldn't happen if the game was played on PS3 though.. So it IS Epics fault for backing MS network. It won't be fixed in gears 3 as nearly all 360 games have lag if playing players abroad (360 fanboys will deny this to there teeth but I seen it myself). It's fine if you play people close to you though.

the unreal engine. It chokes on the low frame rates with graphics that can not be supported by any game system. Lag is a problem of the game not the servers and you IP.

The maps in two have better detail than one but the characters in one have much more details. You can see the chain mail in GOW 1 on the locust.

Damn right.Sony's service teams sucks monkey balls.I've send them a psp with dead pixels on screen and they returned me a new one with dead pixels too.Also sent ps3 said that they fixed it payed because it was out of warranty and guess what nothing fixed at all.In the other corner I've sent a 360 with RROD and a custom firmware installed and not only they completely fixed despite of the voided warranty but didn't even pay a dollar.

Title Update 6 fixed the lag pretty much completely in my experiences.

and ive been one of the biggest 'gears 2s online was broken and laggy' people, since i live in australia and have had to put up with 1-2s of lag at the BEST of times most nights, since its stupid matchmaking would somehow think that putting me in a match with 7 americans, a japanese, and a german would be LESS laggy than a match with 9 other aussies.

they fixed that with TU6 though, as they added a MUCH better region preference to the matchmaking. now if i play, its against aussies, and with no noticable lag.

there is ALWAYS lag playing with people across oceans in other countries. it is literally impossible NOT to have lag, as data travelling at the speed of light still produces latency when its travelling across the globe and back.

you might not notice the lag, but its there. just because you dont see people jumping all over the place and glitching it doesnt mean theyre not lagging - it just means that they have got good client side methods of hiding the lag.

Locking you out of international playing isn't a solution. I live in Brazil and have friends over USA, Europe and Japan, if SOCOM Confrontation did that it would also solve the major lag some of its server is suffering (as the Brazillian one) but you wouldn't see me glad for it.

Newtype is wrong to think MAG don't have lag, but there's a lot of difference between 350ms tops to a chinese gamer reach to and get back from an USA based MAG server to actually having 1-2 full seconds of lag at the best case scenario in Gears 2 as you had pointed yourself.

I never played Gears 2 online, but if it's as bad as you said, Epic should really rethnk those servers, I had been in PC P2P games with overseas mates that didn't have 2 seconds of latency.

basically, they screwed up the net code for Gears 2 from the beginning. like you said, it shouldnt be lagging 2 seconds even in worst case conditions. that was bad net code.

but like i said, theyve basically fixed it now.

and they did NOT just 'remove' international play. i can still play with Americans etc, and sometimes i DO get a good connection, especially when theres 5 of us aussies and one of us is the host. its all good then usually. and you can always just invite your international friends to a game - region filters dont just say 'you cant play with anyone thats not in your country'. its not the same as having a US server and a separate Aus server. theyre all on the one matchmaking server, but what region youre in plays a part in determining which match is best for you - like it should.

Gears 2s online was virtually unplayable to me and most aussies for 12 months. its great now, the problem is though that barely anyone plays it because they all still think its laggy like it was for the first 12 months. its not, but can you really blame them for not bothering going back to see? i cant.

i dont want dedicated servers for Gears 3, i just want the matchmaking from Halo Reach lol. yet to see anything other than full green connection for basically everyone in every match so far.

I loved Gears of War and to me it had a great online experience minus the lag and glitches. When Gears of War 2 came out I was completely pissed off and hated it. Gears of War 2 was my last Xbox 360 game I bought because I was sick of all the Bulls*** Micro$oft gave me so I bought a Playstation 3 and now I'm very satisfied with my console and games. I'll get disagrees but you ignorant Xbox fanboys who has not tried it should.
Facts I bought my Xbox 360 February 2006 has gone thru 3 of them. I had a horrible experience with Live with all the hackers and children that shouldn't be playing mature games. I bought my Playstation 3 in 2008 and bought not only the recent titles but older ones too and they was awesome and fun. I had minimum trouble with lag, glitches and ignorant people thats until Call to Children Modern Hackfare 2 came out.

while the gears 2 co-op was incredibly fun, the multiplayer in gears 1 is what brought me back to the series. and after promise after promise that they fixed all the issues in the 2nd game, i was sold. now that i know they are liars i will definitely be waiting til long after launch before i decide what i'm going to do about gears 3. if it's another laggy mess, it'll be a bargain bin or rental for me.

and, it's not as if we can trust the reviewers. i didn't read a single review for the launch of gears 2 that mentioned those horrible latency issues. no, this time i'll be going directly to the people that are foolish enough to buy it day one.

What people don't get is that is not only the game is the crappy connections people have too.

For example i have a 6Mb connection with 2Mb in upload i could host and no one will have lag but the problem is that the game chooses the guy with 1Mb download an 0.4Mb Upload as the host...

I can host games all day long and i dont lag untill tards with walmart internet join my game. Thats why i hate ubisoft for taking the bandwith meters out of the rainbow 6 games. Because everyone knows to kick the red dot. I play with my cousins in japan and they show up as a yellow dots and they dont jump around the map like alot of guys in the us i play with. So if you internet sucks get out of my games. Microsoft should patch the bandwith meter into live itself so when you join a game a banwith bar should show by your name so we dont have to play with you. It wasn't only the lag and the shitty new shotgun. The controls changed. Gears1 had amazingly tight controls. The type of controls that give you confidence that you can kill at will. Everyone felt it and you had shotgun battles where you dance around each other, trying to fake each other out. It's a thing of beauty I still love to this day. It's such a satisfying experience in that if you win. You know it was your skills and if you lose it feels fair, like you zigged when you should have zagged.

All that went out the window in Gears2. The controls feel horrible! I haven't played Gears2 in months. I got tired of it. It wasn't fun. It felt like work and I felt like a sitting duck in multiplayer.

Its not host advantage i have friends with great connections from all over the world. Even in the early days of the 360 we was hosting 32 players on perfect dark zero with no lag. If your connection sucks it sucks. We all switch up hosting games it doesnt matter because i know there connection can handle it. But there are too many people who think they can host with no upload speeds. And internet isp are bad about giving you lots of download speed and no upload speed. And games that randomly pick host always give hosting to crap connections. What ever software they use to choose host needs to be fixed. IF you dont have at least 1Mb upload you shouldnt even try and host anything over 6 to 8 players.

And alot of the isp's out there are cheap on the upload speeds. I have one friend on live that hosts 16 players games on live all day long with no lag with a 2Mb download and a 2Mb upload all day long. And his server runs way smoother than these guys with 20Mb download speeds that are constantly going up and down.

Unreal Engine needs to gets better character models. Every game made using those engine have bloated fat players. Sony should license all their first party engine to other noobs developers. It will help them get more money plus better games in the process win win situation...

Gears 1 had beauiful graphics...along came gears 2 and the graphics looked cartoony. I thought it was just the level(the hospital) but when the locust first arrived I noticed graphics were definately cartoonier. Now I see gears 3 gameplay on xbox live and it looks worse than part 2. I think the lambient effects are too much for the box or too much for the programmers at epic...go back to regular locusts and make the bosses lambient. I know you read these forums cliffy b. Listen to me I want this to be a good ending. If these graphics don't return to at least gears 2 quality I will beat it on casual and then sell it on craigslist and not invest anymore time into it. Get to work.

Yeah, I agree that Gears of War 2's multiplayer was not that great at launch. Lots of bugs and glitches. But with the recent title updates, Gears 2 is quite the multiplayer game. I play it every now and then I have lots of fun. Though, I still wish Epic fixed that one glitch where you're trying to chainsaw someone and you end up cringing 5 thousand times!

I don't know about you guys, but I'm looking forward to Gears of War 3. Epic Games seems to be committed to make Gears 3's online a lot better than Gears 2. Hopefully, Epic will not make the same mistake twice. Though, I doubt they would.
