3 simple reasons why game companies should stop whining about used game sales.

Sarcastic Gamer smacks video game companies around with economics as they explain three reasons why used game sales are good for them.

"The title says it all. Where else in, well, in life, have there ever been people who sell you stuff, who will do everything in their power to keep you from selling it to someone else. You own it. You’ve purchased it. The thing you paid money for? It’s yours. To keep, to destroy, to sell.

Video game developers can’t stand it. Recently a rep from THQ went out of their way to spit on gamers that buy used games. To paraphrase, he said “(THQ) doesn’t care about gamers that buy used.” This is not healthy. It’s not healthy for developers to fixate on this and it’s not healthy to use their considerable power to attempt to stop us from doing whatever we want with the things we own."

lol'd at ducktales pic..

i rarely buy used.. but when i do is mostly when devs/publishers are a-holes and dont deserve my money.

Just make an excellent game and you dont have to worry about sales, they will speak for themselves for the most part.

deadreckoning6665021d ago (Edited 5021d ago )

His 3rd point is a very good one. If you buy a used game you like, then ull likely pay full price to buy the sequel brand new. I agree 100%. I bought Uncharted 2 used a couple months ago and I'm ready to pre-order Uncharted 3.

Baka-akaB5021d ago (Edited 5021d ago )

What's even the basis for such a statement ?
It's every bit as likely than the customer might just buy the sequel used , again .

AC130-Gunship5021d ago (Edited 5021d ago )

Publishers are screwing everyone

Activision made 1 billion dollars on MW2

1 BILLION!!!

The Infinity Ward leads peeped, and got fired.

You do the math.

RedDead5021d ago

The first point is absolutly correct for me, i've only ever traded in games to get a new game. Never for cash.

avengers19785021d ago

I only buy used games when the game doesn't seem like it's worth 60 bucks to me. I have no problem paying for games that I want, but games I'm unsure of I get used.
If I choose to not trade in any of my games, I would probably just give them to friends, and then no one makes any money off that old game. I only keep the games that I really, really enjoyed, and even then I sometimes trade them in to get cash for new games that are coming out.
Plus there are a ton of games I never would have played if I didn't buy them for a used copy price(20-30$)...Then if there better then I thought that Dev may get me to shell out money for there next game...because now I'm a fan of theres.
Really they should stop complaining about it, and focus on stopping pirates, used games have been around along time, and now it's a problem(I DON'T THINK SO!)

ico925021d ago

i only buy used games if the game is published by activison, you have no idea how much i hate that company

KratosGirI5021d ago

I usually buy my games used.

Genesis55021d ago

I get the previously played ones from my local video store alot. If it's a game I have been waiting for I will usually get it day 1. If I'm just out looking for deals I can get some new games for around $20-$25 off the previously played shelf. With BR disc they have the special coating so once you wipe the finger prints off them they look brand new.

PandemicPrawn05021d ago

I have been buying nearly all my games used this gen.

Should I feel bad about that? I don’t think so. I have a mortgage to pay and a wife and two children to support, so cash is tight in my household.
I have been buying games brand new since the 16 bit (SNES / Mega drive) era. So I feel I have done my part for the industry as a consumer.

I will buy new games again when I can justify doing so, but right now my money is better spent elsewhere.

At least I’m not pirating games. I cannot see how anyone can justify doing that.

RememberThe3575021d ago

Nice to see you have your priorities in the right place. Family first.

Zinc5021d ago

You obviously need to take care of your family and living obligations first. There is nothing wrong with buying used games. The only thing I would add is, most developers/publishers see pirating and buying used games as the same thing. This is because they don't see any money from it directly. There have been people in the industry that have actually said they are no different.

Personally, I think that the game industry has really become a legitimate industry, that produces sales in the 10's of billions and is overtaking the film industry. This means that all these companies are becoming larger and larger, and they are starting to adopt more aggressive corporate stances on things.

While many still get into the games industry because it is a passion, they are being shouted down and controlled by the corporate structure. That rigidity of thinking is going to hurt them more than help.

Just look at the backlash from DLC and the practices they are using to get rid of used games.

Here's a truth for everybody. If you make a good game, it will be pirated, rented, bought used and bought new. But, no matter what, you are going to make money, because it was a good game and people want to play it.

darkdoom30005021d ago

Actually.... in a developer's eye... Pirating is probably just as bad as buying used.

in both cases you got to play their game, and they got no money.

zero_gamer5021d ago

Except with used games, someone already paid the publishers for that copy as opposed to piracy, the copies are counterfeits and exist without bringing in a dime of revenue to the publishers. Legit copies of games are no different than any piece of personal property that has monetary value and can be sold to the second hand market or given to someone as a hand-me-down, such as a father giving his old games to his kids.

And if the companies don't like it, they can bake cake instead...at least you cannot sell your cake and eat it too.

Sarick5021d ago (Edited 5021d ago )

They won't stop there. The next step will be selling game licenses. You see how Software companies sell software. Most software is limited to one computer per license or one installed session at a time.

That's why developers are pushing for download only markets. When you purchase that software it's linked to your account and you can't really trade it. If they start selling disc like one user PC software it could impact the used game market.

You know those disc seals that have a little sticker on it saying. "By opening this product you adhere to the these terms and a agree to this license" "You can't buy sell resale or trade under these terms." "If you do not agree to these terms return this product to the retailer you purchased it or destroy all media."

It's all just a big way to make trading or reselling (SOFTWARE) products as another form of piracy.

ACEMANWISE5021d ago

But why are they taking ownership away from honest paying consumers? Why haven't they offered a service to backup your games? To me, I agree that the developer should get paid for used games. But they don't because legally places like GameStop can rob them and not pay. However the countermeasures seem to be doing two things, not one. First they are fighting piracy and second they are not offering ownership to honest paying consumers. It's like they are taking away from everybody.

Jallen5021d ago

Nice to see a well thought out argument on the other side but of course this glosses over the whole "intellectual rights" thing devs often throw around at this point.

Course I rent games now so everybody hates me.

zagibu5020d ago

Yeah, the sad fact is, they don't sell you a game, but a license to use it. They will try everything to enforce that this license can't be resold.

evilbart5021d ago

I think the majority of people who trade in games use the money/credit towards the purchase of another game, sometimes one they may not have bought outright,so it also helps the game industry but this goes unnoticed

There are no "thoughtful" ads in video games, EA

I think the only type of games that can gets away with it would be sport games, having those sponsors ads on the side like on real life.

But don't put freaking Doritos ads in Star Wars or something, it breaks the immersion. If it is a pop-up ads, then big no.

Hofstaderman8d ago

EA can thoughtfully eff themselves.

Makersbreath28d ago

EA coming back for the crown of being perceived as the worst company in gaming.

Chocoburger7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

One of my favorite series is the THPS franchise, and it was packed with ads, but it didn't bother me. Posters for skateboard companies, JEEP, and Nokia phones. It did sort of fit in with the game world, but that was the past, these days ad would be intentionally intrusive or unskippable loading screen type of imagery. Ugh, I know EA would do it in a horrible fashion. Screw them.

Aye just call Phil, i mean he somehow made Bobby Kotick's scandal disappear and gave him a few million dollar high five on the way out.

Cacabunga13d ago

I wonder if it will be censored with some in game ads.

MrBaskerville11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Microsoft did, Phil Spencer played a minor part. He instigated the buyout that led to Kotick escaping all his controversies while getting a golden handshake.

Someone on Twitter calculated that the people hired in Tango and Arkane Austin could get a decent salary for roughly 17 years for the money Kotick was paid.

InUrFoxHole10d ago

Yeah some thing tells me Kotics $ was already guaranteed before MS made the deal. As for the studios... Let's be honest here... none of those studios made system sellers.

XiNatsuDragnel13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

EA about to go down like Activision and then Phil saves the day saying.this is good for the industry and consolidation will help create competition. /s.

MrBaskerville11d ago

Then they shutdown Codemasters and studio behind Jedi Survivor.

Atleast they could hardly do much damage that EA hadn't allready done. EA has shut down most of their studios by now.

ravens5213d ago

What's up with all these horny creeps. You gon be horny, fine. Just not at work take care of that shit before you go in. Rub one out if you have to. Don't be a creep at all. ESPECIALLY at work. But don't be one AT ALL.

Extermin8or3_13d ago

I mean part of the issue is that things transpired outside of work....

MrBaskerville11d ago

That's the thing he mentioned about not being a creep at all.

KwietStorm_BLM13d ago

You think deviants care where they are? Work sometimes makes it an even better situation for them because they can abuse their power.

mudakoshaka12d ago

Nerds think they are Gods when they are making video games.

NotoriousWhiz13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

"it seems that according to EA, given the events transpired outside of work between two adults, and the fact that once investigation has started that the alleged perpetrators didn’t do it again, the investigation is considered closed. [...] The victim still has to work with the people that harassed her."

Yep, EA is disgusting.

Extermin8or3_13d ago

I mean the fact stuff happened outside of work puts EA in quite a difficult position legally. These women don't seem to have reported the matter to the police which kinda ties EA's hands on what they can do. If they don't file reports of the crimes then yeah from EA's perspective it is stuff that happened outside of work. The only exception is the guy that apparently referenced things in the slack channel for work, spending on what he said proving it may be very hard and he may well be able to get away with plausible deniability. I don't like EA and I think these people need to be dismissed but without any legal action being taken, EA can't really do much without risk of being sued themselves for unfair dismissal etc.

Well, anything to make those shareholders happy, I guess. They're all that matters in this industry nowadays.

badboyz0916d ago (Edited 16d ago )

EA stocks haven't been profitable in over 5yrs. They better hope Take-two don't get the FIFA license lol.
