Call of Duty 8 - first (tiny) details revealed

Sledgehammer Games is currently at work on Call Of Duty 8, which is due to arrive next year. And a Twitter post from a studio exec has teased the very first details of what we can expect.

How the HELL could something that's giving you boatloads of money every year be stupid? Don't be such a dullard - the COD games are good shooters with addictive multiplayer & massive marketing with pop-culture scenarios.

It's not hard to see why it works so well.

I never played a cod before 4 - never played the mp before 6 but i enjoyed it, it was fun. Same can't be said now it's been butchered by the community.

COD will exist for a few more years, no doubt, and it will fade - just ignore it if it offends you.

NB IW didn't ruin mw2 - activision's pressure to publish & the community did that.

There were actually 2 completely distinct games released on PC - they are different to the console versions.

1 - Call of Duty
2 - Call of Duty: Finest Hour
3 - Call of Duty 2
4 - Call of Duty 2: Big Red One
5 - Call of Duty 3
6 - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
7 - Call of Duty World at War
8 - Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
9 - Call of Duty Black Ops

And this is not counting portable games

Thor, the ones Raddog listed are considered to be the "real" CoD games. Those other you listed are crappy console-only versions (last gen when consoles couldn't keep up with PCs) and goofy spinoffs.

OK, and if we're talking mobile editions, then pong, brick breaker and Tetris are the most milked franchises on the face of the Earth. \

I will listen to an argument about portable editions, but only if they include almost every aspect as the "full release" versions that PCs and consoles get. Half the time, handheld versions of "major" releases are just meat from a stew, without all the veggies, broth and seasoning.

But, back to something near on topic - if someone says CoD 8 to you, you will know exactly which one they are talking about...

Like I said, you can discount the portable games, but Finest Hour and Big Red One were NOT console equivalents of Call of Duty 1 & 2. They were completely different games with different campaigns. Just because they started again with the numbering of the franchise doesn't change that.

Meaning 3 Call of Duty games within the span of 12 months. If its to be believed that there will be 2 COD games next year.

No. no it isn't fine for any games. I've long argued that Fifa,PES and Madden should have a full release EVERY other year and a roster update/tweak pack on the off year as £20 dlc and disc based updates. A year is nowhere near enough dev time to create what amounts to a whole NEW game with new mechanics or a new engine or properly new online modes across the board yet we fall for it like we do the yearly perk, killstreak and uniform changes(and ever crappier story campaigns) in COD. COD4 is still the best current gen COD so play that, imo, it's the best by a distance as since then the balance has gone and killstreaks got daft.

Sure, it's still fun but it's the same fun for more money and at lower quality. Add dedicated servers and I'll change my mind.

that means more games actually worth playing that are set to come out next year will be delayed until 2012 so they dont have to go up against COD, just like how much better titles like Ghost Recon, Socom 4 and Crysis 2 where all delayed until next year because of fear of going up against COD.

Socom4 wasn't running away from COD really. They just weren't where they wanted to be and people read too much into the release dates and their changes, imho. Dunno about the other shooters but as S4 is a showcase for Move as well as Zipper making up for what /6 did to Confrontation extra polish is needed and COD shouldn't have been a direct sales enemy anyway considering it's not TPS or motion enabled.

Whatever, I really can't see the date for COD:BO having any real bearing on Sony or Zipper's thinking. Would they, for example, have CHOSEN to move(no pun) it's date closer to that of their other 3D/Move enabled AAA shooter in KZ3? Gots to be polish and the way I read it Ghost Recon might have been having other issues than being too near COD too.

When did we as gamers (the elite of the elite....as we check gaming news 24/7)...become so jaded?

It seems (myself included) that we want a new engine, new gameplay, new setting, new experience.........but don't change the core gameplay!?!

It's too much to ask a dev/publisher to produce a game sequel and ask for it to innovate and be all sparkly - but same for the core audience in my opinion. I on the other hand despise how EA handles sports titles.

So what to do? Because if you have the answer - all these devs want you on their payroll! ;)

1-I want my sequels to have a better or at least different story than it's predecessor.
2-I want improvements in the game engine...but not a new engine every sequel.
3-I want gameplay tweaks and netcode improvements
4-I want a few fresh ideas...innovation like motion control...no thank you.
5-I want some kind of loyalty program to discount the cost for core users. A simple $5 off for owners of the previous version would be a nice nod.

All but the last one seems to occur every year...so really, I'm not complaining.

Seriously, this gen is the gen of FPS. You see all these games with their flare and added tweaks. Halo has forge or Killzone 2 has graphics...how about Borderlands lootfest RPGness?

But I bet if you were a Halo fan and its sequel was Halo 5 - Killstreaks.....You'd be pissed! We want familiarity and innovation....its the perfect mix that proves elusive.

I think Black Ops looks good...its 60fps....who else does that in a FPS?
It has new stuff. I just hope that it has lots of maps and that they are good.
If anything could be leveraged at a game that uses the same engine as its predecessor, its that the maps should carry over.

Curious....do you know how much it costs to make games like GOW3 or Killzone 2?
AAA titles cost $uckloads of cash. Asscreed2 had a 200 man dev team at it's peak! Each one of those guys got a paycheck that fed themselves and their families.

You can argue that some expensive games suck and some don't....but MW2 was and is very good. It does many things right and a few things horribly wrong.

Most of the real issues in MW2 are easy fixes in Black Ops - as it has dedicated servers! Hacks and cheats are much harder to do when your being monitored. Things that require patches don't necessarily need them when dedicated servers are involved.

I play all the shooters...I like FPS, TPS. I want a perfect game as much as the next guy. I prepaid MOH & Black-Ops...and I hope as you do (if you are a real gamer) that they are both awesome experiences.

But if I ever see pay-to-play subscription for any game (not including LIVE....though I do play online on my PS3 only these days).......I'll jump to the next game that doesn't have pay-to-play crap!

I'm not sure how activsion thinks this will work. In a MMO game....only the RPGs make money. Thats because the lootfest with friends tackling quests is a recipe for win.

But a FPS...how are they going to offer amazing content daily or even weekly?
A reward system might help...but I think the genre is the real reason this will fail. FPS subs just is a bad idea.

We'll see. Like I said....I'll play the best non-sub game until all games are sub based...then I'll decide what to do.

I'd really hate it though if I was a 360 only player.....I'd be extra pissed!

After COD 3, the series sucks. MW was pretty cool, but then everyone started playing it and it got ruined permanantly. Ahhhh, nothing like playing a fresh round and hearing a kid yelling into the mic. (Because we all logged on to hear him). There should be an age requirement to play online.
