Five games that are more 'Star Wars' than Call of Duty

Examiner.com
"Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has recently made the statement that, “The Call of Duty franchise is a force of nature. I think it is the closest thing this generation has to a Star Wars. I think it’s unique and bigger than any musical act or any movie franchise in that capacity.” While we appreciate Mr. Kotick’s enthusiasm for his product, we don’t believe there’s been a game that has come close to the cultural impact that Star Wars had when it was released in 1977. However, we humbly submit five game franchises that are more “Star Wars” than Call of Duty."

...I hope Kotick reads this. What a RIDICULOUS and DELUSIONAL statement that was.

Queasy5051d ago

Would we honestly expect anything less?

Neco5125051d ago

NO, no you shouldn't expect anything less from him

MxShade5051d ago

Aww man, you had to go feed Kotick's ego by giving him WoW. Not that it hasn't had an epic impact, just that it's another Activision-Blizzard game.

Danrax5051d ago

This is a very funny article but let's be honest, Mr. Kotick has done a great job in monetizing an industry. Without him, we'd all probably be playing Bubble Bobble on calculators. The man is an icon. A legend. A true hero.

MxShade5051d ago

Yes, to pencil-pushers who only see the bottom line.

HumanStark5051d ago

Bubble Bobble owns. Haters gonna hate.

birchoff5051d ago

You're talking about him like he was Carmack(John), now HE's a legend.

Fishy Fingers5051d ago

I think he's simply referring to commercial success and awareness.

Downtown boogey5051d ago

Star Wars was first and foremost revolutionary and innovating. Call of Duty is nothing like that.

Fishy Fingers5051d ago (Edited 5051d ago )

Exactly, that's why I said success and awareness. Not revolutionary and innovating. He's talking about it's brand power.

TheAntiFanboy5050d ago

Even its brand power is lacking compared to Star Wars. By a long shot. Metal Gear, Halo, and Warcraft are far, FAR more recognizable and iconic than Call of Duty will ever be.

MW was an excellent videogame. They messed up Spec Ops big time, but aside from this it was a huge step in the right direction initially. Most notably, at launch it seemed to come from a very cohesive creative vision that was felt across gameplay, to story to art style/visual direction. It was also very notably written by prominent ex-Naughty Dog guys that quit almost immediately before release.

That COMPLETELY dissolved through post-launch content and the full pivot to a "cross-mode" narrative that completely obliterated the cohesion in overall story direction. Warzone then "became" the new face of Call of Duty and the franchise completely removed itself from anything remotely creatively "good". It is a pure money machine, so I kinda get why they're doing it....but I personally completely lost interest.

I would love to see Infinity Ward move off CoD and get to make their own product with full control. They clearly have some massive talent in their ranks but it's perverted by Activision's corporate interests.
