Cliff Bleszinski on Gears of War 3

Joystiq: "During E3, we managed to distract Cliff Bleszinski, design director for Epic Games and the face of Gears of War, long enough for an interview. Despite our intense interrogation, he remained a good sport throughout and offered us candid answers."

HighDefinition5082d ago

Cliff B is so cool and GeOW3 is gonna be amazing.

WrAiTh Sp3cTr35082d ago

He finally spoke on Quantum...with no jabs even.

Sanzee5082d ago (Edited 5082d ago )

Yeah, he's getting better. Still no David Jaffe but getting there.

8thnightvolley5082d ago

david jaffe? come on seriously...

jaredhart5082d ago

is easily one of my favorite console games.

PshycoNinja5082d ago

And I'm sure the guys over at Epic are happy that you like there game too. I'm serious, every time I hear when someone played one of my games (at school) or liked my concept (classmates like a lot of my ideas) it's always good to hear. Make's developers happy and want to work harder to top the game they just made.

But he is the douchist developer I have ever seen. He just comes across as arogent and... well a douche. I know many people enjoy Gears but I didn't enjoy the game nor did I think it had very inspired or well designed levels. One thing you learn while in my programming progam at college is that not everyone is going to like your game even if its well programed or designed so DO NOT act like your game is better than everyone elses. Have confidence in your game but dont be a douche about it. \n I mean \rant.

WrAiTh Sp3cTr35082d ago (Edited 5082d ago )

I like his games and don't care if he is a douche. You don't like his games and you mind if he is a douche. Does this mean you're an official hater? The world may never know...

Edit: That remark about Naughty Dog was a competition of some devs during some type of showcase. It wasn't pertaining to any jabs concerning either one's particular franchises. He makes off-remark comments here and there, but he said UC2 was "stellar"...

PshycoNinja5082d ago (Edited 5082d ago )

I respect the guy hence I dont hate the guy, HOWEVER he does come off as a very arogent and douche person. That's just how he is. I know some of you love the guy so I'll just stop there.

Edit: a recent tweet from Cliffy B: “@Naughty_Dog YOU’RE GOING DOWN! IT’S ON!”

http://www.vgarabia.com/201...

"Bigger, Badder, and more Bada**" I just think he oversells and hypes his games a bit too high.

And another quote: "I dress in a T-shirt and jeans every day when I go to work. When I go to conventions I like to dress up. Sue me."

Aphe5082d ago

Maybe he was, you know, just joking? I don't really care too much for Cliff Bleszinski, but it seemed like a playful sort of comment, and ND responded in a similar manner. Some things are taken too seriously.

Bnet3435082d ago

Aphe is right. How can you not tell Cliffy B was being playful with that comment? Him and Ted Price are good friends.

Spydiggity5082d ago

that's a compliment to ND!!!

how is that so hard to understand?

dear god, people are so unnecessarily sensitive. always makin something outta nothing.

Bnet3435082d ago

How does he come across being a douche and arrogant person? I don't even know what exactly you mean by that.

WrAiTh Sp3cTr35082d ago

Fair enough, but with a franchise like Gears under his belt, I think he has calmed down a whole lot concerning douche mode he is ascribed to. If I made Gears, I'd be WAY less self compose than he is...WAY less, lol.

maddhatter1235082d ago

yeah has toned it down alot. in one interview he was asked if gears 3 would be bigger better and more badass and said he doesn't care about saying stuff like that anymore he just wants to make it a good game.

PshycoNinja5082d ago (Edited 5082d ago )

I would be a little more composed because I would be FUC*ing tired all the time. I wouldn't have time to be like that. And it's true, he's getting better at not being like that. which is why I respect the guy.

Edit: Okay I got it he was being playful with those first two comments. He just SEEMS TO ME like a douche ( a few years ago). I still respect the guy.

IHateYouFanboys5082d ago

@PshychoNinja: "He just comes across as arogent and... well a douche"

when you created the biggest and (arguably) best new franchise this generation, ushered in the 'next gen' wave of games, brought PC-like multiplayer to consoles, and have 2 of the highest selling exclusives this generation, you can be forgiven for being a bit arrogant IMO.

all things considered, Dude Huge is pretty damn humble. He has never come across as a douche to me - he just comes across as a video game fan who loves video games, and loves being in a position to bring exciting new things to video games.

thebudgetgamer5082d ago (Edited 5082d ago )

i kid, but serious he is kind of a douche. the games he makes are fun, thats what matters to me.
i like him though, from back in the day when he was on g4tv.com with tina wood. mmmm tina wood.

Im sure he would love it. More money for him.

OtterX73d ago

Yea, I remember seeing him and his Lamborghini at one point in history. Lol, I think that kind of gives it away.

rippermcrip73d ago

Doubtful he gets any residuals from anything Gears related.

rippermcrip73d ago

Bunch of clowns down voting without any explanation of how exactly he is getting money off Gears. You think Notch still gets Minecraft money too?

jznrpg72d ago (Edited 72d ago )

Depends on the contract. Some contracts have residuals some don’t

Whitey2k73d ago

Sometimes I don't get what he says half the times. He could of put gears on the playstation from the start but he's fanboyness for xbox got in the way

Notellin73d ago

I imagine this is exactly how fanboys feel how this went down. Microsoft paid for all the development and took all the risk off Epic games for a new IP.

It has nothing to do with anyone being a fanboy. Well other than yourself who oversimplified this entire franchises history.

LoveSpuds73d ago

I agree Notellin, however, once he was in bed with MS he did become pretty 'anti Sony' ans was such a shill for MS.

Hofstaderman73d ago

This. And Sony also does this with titles these days.

shinoff218373d ago

I thought it was said cliffs shopped it around hence rumors of a ps3 demo being out there. If ms took on all the cost, why is there a ps3 demo?

Rude-ro73d ago

Not true at all.
Microsoft had to buy the ip because the contract ran out on keeping it exclusive.
Microsoft took no risk, they just marketed the game and payed for a contract.
Not hard to find out.

Your the the fanboy

Sciurus_vulgaris73d ago

No, Epic signed a development and publishing contract with Xbox for Gears of War. After Judgement Microsoft still had the Gears of War publishing rights. Epic then sold the Gears of War IP to Microsoft in 2014. Cliffy B never owned Gears of War, he was just a lead designer of the series.

rippermcrip73d ago

Ya I don't know what people are saying about CliffyB making money of Gears sales nowadays. He was never the owner and Epic no longer owns it either.

ChasterMies73d ago

“He could of put gears on the playstation from the start but he's fanboyness for xbox got in the way”

It has nothing to do with fondness for the Xbox platform. Microsoft paid for exclusivity.

Travesty73d ago (Edited 73d ago )

Well when you look at the sales perspective of ps5. It has a big audience selling over a 2 to 1 ratio. It makes money sense.
Fanboy era was at its prime during the ps3-360 generation. It’s not as toxic as it once was, thankfully. People grow out of it eventually. I have my preference just as the next person. That being said it’s coming to be more about expanding availability instead of standing behind a brand. Much more Microsoft than Sony. But Sony will probably move up its time of PC release for increase revenue.
We will see, it’s just speculation.

Psychonaut8573d ago

CliffyB is like David Jaffe at this point, always quick with the opinions but haven’t made a successful game in over a decade at this point. Do any of us really care what they think about anything? I certainly don’t.

shinoff218373d ago

I never liked the guy tbh but he's got more relevance in gaming then we do.

Skuletor73d ago

CliffyB, I haven't heard that name since Lawbreakers flopped.
