Rumor: WiiConnect24 Breaking Wii Consoles?

Computer and Video Games report on a rumor that the always on connectivity of the Wii's WiiConnect24 is being blamed for downing some of the consoles.

I dont know if this story is true or not; but fixing something, does in fact, by logic, indicate a problem.

Nintendo systems are indestructible. It's hard to believe a little heat from a LED light is killing them.

This actually happened to one of my friends. This system overheated for no apparent reason. The situation? He left his Wii in stanby mode while he was on vacation. He came back 2 weeks later and his Wii was fried. It wouldn't acknowledge any input. He sent it in to Nintendo and they replaced it within 1 week.

However, he did leave it in a smaller cubby hole within his entertainment system, which is probably not a good idea.

As much as a company tries to work out all the issues, there is always going to be some defect somewhere on some system. This is the price we pay for more complex and powerful technology.

My bubbles come and go as well but recently I noticed I have someone ignoring me. I must have an ability to seriously annoy someone. Is there a way to see who's tracking you or ignoring you?

Most people that know just turn of the wiiconnect24 option so that their Wii does not overheat the GPU.

I'm sure this is just a small problem that Nintendo will get sorted out, but I did find this last line in the article amusing:

"In the meantime, if you're worried about your Wii burning up, just deactivate WC24 - it's proved to be a non-essestial feature so far anyway."

The Wii does get hot, but I went on a trip for an entire week and left my WiiConnect on the entire time and haven't had any problems so far. If you don't have time to play the Wii for a few days, it might be a good idea to just turn it on for a minute or so to get the fan blowing for a lil and then shut it off again.

More than likely, its a warning for the typical "console kept in a tiny entertainment system enclosure" type person. I have to open the doors to my entertainment system every time i play one of the 3 systems, it gets WAY too hot in there otherwise.

This is the first I've heard of dead Wii consoles but, I did notice the first week after launch that my Wii was definitely overheating when in standby. I just unplug it when not in use.
I didn't know what the reason was (I never figured it to be WiiConnect24) but, overheating to that degree is NEVER good for electronics. Common sense really.

I noticed the discs would feel a bit warm when the system wasn't on, and I was taking them out to pop something different in... but I've basically had WiiConnect24 running since Nov 19 without any problems.

Nintendo makes good stuff. Never had a problem with any console, controller, or peripheral in the past 20 years.

I've also had WC24 on since I got it at launch and...no problems here. I also have it in an open space. And it is essential to have on if you want consistant weather and news updates. I use these channels everyday.

I've left my Wii on the 24connect service. As soon as I got Resident Evil 4, I noticed green and red pixels during cutscenes and gameplay. I emailed Nintendo and they said they'd replace it for free. So, I guess everything is good, no ?

a guy had the same problem but then he changed his tv settings and it was fixed.....did it happen with other wii games?
if not then its just RE:4.

almost all console are having problems expect PS3....I think. I think Nintendo will fix it, they got the money to do it.
