IGN: E3 2010: Killzone 3 Hands-on

IGN:

There are no pre-renders, no elaborate unplayable cut-scenes and no false promises; Killzone 3's reveal is pure and simple – an extended hands-on with the fourth level of a game that we're thrilled to report is full of awesome. In a cinema a few hundred yards from Guerrilla's studio in an Amsterdam that is, thanks to an ongoing strike from the city's refuse services, looking as grimy and hostile as the surface of Helghan itself, we're given the first look at a game that's going to get PS3 owners frothing all over again.

Maybe this will stop all the b!tching about Killzone 3 lacking color.

"Helghan's now have jetpack troopers among their ranks and they're brilliantly agile foes. It's easy to think that, in the wake of Halo: Reach's newfound aerial acrobatics, this is a case of me-too game design, but it's worth remembering that jetpacks were a part of the PSP spin-off Liberation and have been a part of Killzone 3 well before Bungie revealed its own take on them several weeks ago."

Hopefully this will shut those idiot fanboys out about HALO REACH inventing Jetpack and Killzone 3 copying off of it.

Xulap5088d ago

This screenshot looks amazing.

execution175088d ago

then the one naughty dog did for Among Thieves :O

thewhoopimen5088d ago

Is it me or do the graphics looks sharper? I remember the uniforms of the Helghan troops to be more muddled? Also the anti-aliasing seems to have taken a leap as well... The snow design reminds me of Uncharted 2's.

darkmurder5088d ago Show
WhittO5088d ago

Woo there are going to be jungle areas?
Like there wasn't enough comparison to Crysis haha.

Cant wait to see what the game looks like.

raztad5088d ago

@thewoopi

The graphics ARE sharper. That could mean 2 things: Game is 720p and using MLAA (Quincux is gone for good) or game is 1080p and using up to 2xAA. I would say the former is more likely.

TotalPS3Fanboy5088d ago (Edited 5088d ago )

What game was that? No one have even heard of that 2007 game you kept talking about. I mean, after 3 years, you would think people would have heard about it by now.

kaveti66165088d ago

How come me and Darkmurder have the same bubble count?

I may have criticized some games in my day, but I hope now everyone can see the difference between someone who deserves one bubble and someone who you may not agree with but doesn't deserve one bubble.

Anyway, KZ3 is looking fantastic. I have to get an HDTV to play it.

Ravage275088d ago

i honestly have no idea why you got bubble-raped :/

IHateYouFanboys5087d ago

theyre obviously supersampled screens, hence the lack of aliasing.

typical 'trick' that all sony-owned studios do.

playnation5087d ago

yeah yeah.. that's all you want to say? thats your comment? ok..
go hate yourself.

IHateYouFanboys5087d ago

yep, thats all i have to say because theyre not in-game screens.

from what ive read its just, in a way that sony fanboys would describe a new Halo or Gears, "Killzone 2.5". throwing up some super high resolution then downscaled 'screens' doesnt excite me.

"Oh, and there's one more thing that we've declined to mention so far. Killzone 3 will be one of the first Sony titles to support 3D out of the box, and thanks to a prototype TV using active shutter glasses set up at the event we can report that it looks stupendous – bullets zip out of the screen while particles such as snow and sparks are tangible elements of the game world. It feels like much more than a gimmick as well: peripheral details such as raging seas thrashing the icebergs combine with the way the player's gun seems to hang out of the screen (and indeed people were living up to the age-old cliché and reaching out to touch what wasn't there during the presentations) to create a level of immersion that's truly beyond anything we've seen to date."

I like the sound of that. Next Spring, I will be buying a 3D TV

Gamefan125088d ago

oh ya .. my tv is coming in a few hours from now .. pn58c8000 =)

nveenio5088d ago

Agreed. It's that kind of hardcore integration that Sony will need to put 3D in homes. The same goes with Move. When a title comes a long that will just blow you away with how it uses new (and expensive) hardware, people will stop saying, "I'm not interested in that!" Because the gamer in them will have to have it.

RageAgainstTheMShine5088d ago (Edited 5088d ago )

Google + Sony FTW!

karl5088d ago

but u guys notice.. that they didnt mention a downgrade in graphics while using the 3d mode?

it seems that they manage to keep the graphics at least as good as killzone 2 or a bit better and 3d at the same time

mookins5088d ago

I would buy one too but I just got a new Bravia so I can't.

Either way, this game will kick lots of ass.

hazeblaze5088d ago

Yep, I was already planning to buy one of the new Samsung 3D sets next year anyway. I'll probably get one around April... can't wait to experience KZ in 3D!!! I wonder will mp be in 3D too... that seems like it'd be insane.

Ju5087d ago

Me too :) Just got BatmanAA in 3D, and took a look at that Samsung at Best Buy. It's only very subtle (well, B:AA is only a teaser for sure), but it leaves more of an impression as soon as you take the goggles of and look at that "flat" picture after.

@Xulap

http://ps3.ign.com/dor/obje...

FIXED.

I dont see any jaggies. MLAA confirmed. Looks smooth as butter, mindblowing. GoW3 epic scale.

Ravage275088d ago

But it's not the likes of Crytek, Treyarch or DICE that Guerrilla is pitting itself against; instead, it sees its competition much closer to home. "Of course, some little games came out just after us," says Hulst, referring to the critical successes of Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2 and God of War III. "As proud as we are of our friends at Worldwide Studios, these games inspired us to step it up and deliver a full-blown sequel to Killzone 2, and one that gets better on every front. There's nothing like some friendly competition to get us to raise the bar once again."

Sony 1st party devs are really the best in what they do.

BkaY5087d ago

boy does that looks fantastic... i am not fps fan but it makes me play killzone2 again..

peace

gta28005087d ago

Sony's only competition has always been from their own studios lol. People were tying to compare Alan Wake and Halo Reach to Killzone 2 and now with this game they can go back to the drawing board lol.

IHateYouFanboys5087d ago

@raztad: "I dont see any jaggies. MLAA confirmed."

no, the only thing it confirms is these are supersampled "screenshots". its the same engine as Killzone 2 - 720p, 30fps, Quincunx AA.

SuperM5087d ago

So what its the same engine? Ever heard about updating and improving the engine? These shots might be supersampled for what i know. But i highly doubt KZ3 will use Quincunx AA. Infact screenshots would look alot more blurry if they did

Ju5087d ago

That "same" engine got updated already when KZ2 released. It was documented and shown in the "Bullet" interactive commercial which you could actually "play" on the PS3. A year has passed, obviously the engine got enhanced even further.

DTClown5088d ago

I may be wrong, someone else look it up. Either way, WarHawk's JetPacks were and are awesome. I guess Halo reach jetpacks will be a first...for a MicroShaft game or Bungie game.

ThatArtGuy5088d ago

Quake's Team Fortress had them in later iterations.

Oh for God's sake. Jetpacks have been in lots of games and so have a lot of other crap. The whole, "they copied" thing is old. People who say one game "copied" another should be banned.

And to add to the actual thread...I want this now! I like that they're adding more variety to things. Should be wayyy better than Killzone 2 in every way.

Ah and so right when the reach hype starts, it also ends. Why? Another PS3 exclusive will technically destroy it. Disagree and get mad all you want. It is inevitible.
But to be fair im pretty sure reach will sell shitloads. I mean thats what matters right? sales? am i rite?

ZombieNinjaPanda5088d ago

@Totalps3fanboy

Don't respond to the troll, he's doing it for attention, let him crawl back under his bridge.

NastyLeftHook5088d ago

One thing that's definitely improved is the melee system, as the clumsy system of old is superseded by a much more dynamic way to stab someone in the face. It's now context sensitive: creep up on a Helghan and it's possible to kick them up against a wall before plunging the knife with a further press of the melee button. Going toe-to-toe with them enables some gruesome kills, sticking the knife in places it doesn't belong like a Helghan's ribcage or eye socket.

pixelsword5088d ago

That snowfall pattern looks very familiar to the snow in the first Resistance game.

TheBand1t5087d ago

Actually, the biggest thing for me in this article is dynamic range audio. It's what made Bad Company 2 sound so good.

DARK WITNESS5087d ago (Edited 5087d ago )

wow... some of you guys need a history lesson.. nice trying to slag of bungie like they just happen to come up with the idea. good job remember that jet packs were back on the psp killzone game... you forgot to mention that jet packs were also in Halo 2... yes back on the old xbox Halo 2.. and they have been a part of Halo since then.

bungie just decided to add it into multiplayer.

It does not take anything away from killzone, but if you want to start getting all historical about it then be honest and cover both sides... then you sound more like you know what your talking about.

Imperator5087d ago

GG is probably going to give us a more varied setting. From Jungles, to ruined cities, to frozen lands(and with ND helping out, the snow will be incredible!). It's going to be amazing.

bjornbear5087d ago

if anything, reach copied KZ

Another One5087d ago

Ideas are reused everywhere. If Reach copied Killzone, then Killzone copied Tribes, and so on and so on.

Please, don't be a complete moron. Killzone 3 will be awesome, but to say one game copies another is stupid (if you have half a brain).

Killzone 3 is playable with mouse & keyboard on PC via RPCS3 & KAMI

Still looks secure 2 gens later... one of my favorite ps3 moments. With 3D and move the game is on another level

MadLad1106d ago

PC almost always ends up the best place to play games, even if it takes a while.

What would you rather play decades down the line? A game at a fixed resolution and frame, considering you have a working disc, and the hardware?
Or run it on an emulator that can update the experience all around, and let you use whatever control input you prefer?

If you insist on the former, it's really only for the sake of nostalgia.

Applejack1106d ago

I disagree. The main draw for consoles has always be the simplicity of just putting the disc in / downloading it and playing without worrying about anything else. The average person just wouldn’t want to deal with emulation even though it’s very important for preservation.

Terry_B1105d ago

Even emulators are super simple to use.

jukins1105d ago

Youre getting flak because people on here thibk of themselves as pc wizards. But honestly most poeple try and go get emulators and romz they end up with malware.. yes theyre "easy" if you know the basics but alot of people dont. That said the fact that its taken nearly 20 years to get a sustantially better experience for ps3 games than on its native system shows the complexity of getting bc to work. Sony, if they have any intention, should just invest in a vastly better psnow experience.

1105d ago
Vegamyster1105d ago

jukins

Most people who emulate don't get malware, you'd have to be going to some weird sites for that to happen, heck years ago people were getting sketchier ad's resulting in malware warning on this site if you didn't have a ad-blocker lol.

SinkingSage1105d ago

Can't get malware if you legally dump your own games, which you should.

Rachel_Alucard1105d ago (Edited 1105d ago )

That's fine if that's the main draw, but it doesn't make it a better experience, just a preference. Having the freedom to do the things you can do on PC is what the appeal of PC is. Buying a game on PC means you never have to worry about the console makers just deciding the next hardware shouldn't support the generation anymore, which means everything you bought is stuck on that hardware instead of moving up with everything else. Nintendo uses this tactic to keep reselling the same games over and over at inflated prices. Sony cut all previous gens off the PS4 and sold it back to people in a poor attempt with PSnow. While the PS5 supports PS4 games, that may not be the case in the next gen after this. No to mention shutting off all the previous stores and updates completely. Even MS stopped making new BC titles at some point, so now there's a big list with 17 pages of titles that are not playable on Xbone and are just trapped on older gen. That's not a problem on PC, the reverse happens where you only have to worry if your hardware can play the newest releases at ultra with no issue.

MadLad1105d ago

Did you purposely miss the entire point of my post?

Inverno1105d ago

Well that's the beauty of still owning a retro console tho. Those who usually complain about emulation are just being blindly loyal to a company. Emulation is great for many reason, but if I still owned the console then I disagree nothing beats plugging it back in and going down a nostalgia trip

Top 10 PS3 Games We Hope Come Back On PS5

Resistance, Dead Space franchise, Splatterhouse, Lollipop Chainsaw, Brutal Legends, Alice Madness Returns, Enslaved Journey to the West, Mass Effect franchise. Also wouldn't mind seeing a new Wild Arms game remake or HD remaster, the Xenosaga trilogy, a new Parasite Eve, a new Dino Crisis just too many games to list that are forgotten and left in the dark now adays.

Sciurus_vulgaris1283d ago

The PS3 is difficult to emulate. PS3 backwards compatibility on PS5 would require translation from PowerPC to x86. Additionally the PS5 likely would have to mimic the PS3’s GPU and CPU.

This is what pops up on my web browser. So I can't even read the site. So, forget that. They don't need my data.

But let's get something straight. OG Xbox had around 1,001 games. How many are BC on Series X? **39** THIRTY NINE. Come on! That's wack BC. You can't tell me that's a complete list. Talking about commitment. Game preservation. Ridiculous. Covers nothing.

How many games released on Xbox 360? Around 2085. How many are BC?
568. That's it. Around 1,517 are **MISSING** Stop playing. Tired of that nonsense.

Anyway, the only games I really want from PS3 that would be awesome are Motorstorm and MGS4. I'll take BC. I'll take a remaster. I'll take a remake. If not those, then Killzone 2. And in VR, maybe Sports Champions, House of the Dead Overkill and the Time Crisis games.

That's all I need. But we've gone over BC again and again in every possible way. It wasn't that important because Sony sold 115 million consoles without it. That's proof enough with no outcry. And PS5 has damn near all 4,000+ PS4 games BC. It's not PS1,PS2 and PS3. But that's plenty. I'll take more but you get what you get.
