SCEA has denied 'inaccurate' reports that its $100 price cut on the 60Gig PS3 is simply a move to clear stock before offering solely the higher priced 80Gig version.

Isn't TGS in September, because if it is here is what i think. The 80gig will come out this August but the 60gig will be the one selling like mad. In September the 60gigs will be almost gone if not gone and then at the TGS they will announce that the 80gig will take over at the $499 price or maybe lower, and will now ship with the new controller.

But it is true KAZ HIRAI himself confirmed that the 60GB would no longer be availble in the US and I called BEST BUY and they said the only sku they have for ordering is the 80GB with motorstorm if this is not a phaze out the what would U call it I call it a sucker punch SONY drops the price to sell the 60GB and get it out of retail stores at $499.99 hence price drop then few days later they the tell the consumer the they will no longer offer the 60GB @ 499.99 but U are welcome to buy the new 80GB @599.99 its like magic the price drop has vanished all gone bye bye.... its obvious that there wont be a shortage by the end of july. it doesnt make sense. There will be 60gig ps3s through the end of the year. I bet they will still phase out the 60gig ps3, but make the 80gig at 499. they cant come out and say "were lowering the price to 499 and then next year we will offer an 80gig for 499."

This guy Reeves over at SCEE will probably be looking for a new job this weekend. He is probably accurate in stating Sony's long term plans but you don't go running your mouth after Sony finally had a good few days. Sony really needs to get their collective head screwed on straight. They have the best system, potentially, just keep the price drop and before you know it they'll have a better installed base, which will lead to more exclusives which will eventually lead to dominance once again. I hope Sony does not make this mistake. If anything they never should have come out with the 80Gb at all. They should know better than anyone how easy it is to upgrade the hard drive, and how much cheaper it is for the consumers to do it themselves.

Both are correct actually, They might stop production for 60GB NTSC PS3 from now on. Since they have 1-2 million US PS3 in the pipeline, they are enough supply for the holiday season. there will be worldwide price cut. I'm not sure I'm believing this damage control story from sony right now. Kaz Hirai said it himself that they don't have a 2sku strategy and that once its out of stock they will be back to 599 and he's the president of SCE...so if anybody would know he would. I think its sony's plan to phase out the 60gig in the US..however Sony did not want to announce it this soon. They did do it with the 20gig so its likely to happen again. That being said I'm sure they have plenty of 60gig in stock that should last through this holiday. After that the 60gig will "fade to black". Bet that guy he let this info slip so early is in a HEAP of trouble. hehe

Edit: I just watched the INTERVIEW with Kaz Hirai and he SAID IT HIMSELF that it's discontinued. THIS WHOLE DENIAL is a SHAM..unless the PRESIDENT OF Sony Computer Entertainment doesn't know anything about his company...Highly unlikely.

Ok here is what I think is going on. Sony did reduce the price of the 60GB to $499.99 so it was a price cut for this model. When they sell through the existing 60GB model with EE then the model will be discontinued. At that point they will sell it without the EE and either a 60GB or 80GB drive depending on the status of the Motorstorm bundle. I don't see Sony going back to the $599 price point and abandoning $499 again. There will be a PS3 at $499 it just won't have EE and maybe a different sized hard drive.

In recap at the end of the day the current 60GB model with EE will be discontinued and replaced by another model without EE and a size hard drive to be determined later. This is coming by from a Wii60 and former soon to be current again PS3 owner.

As I stated, I might have to go out and get a 60GB PS3 earlier then I thought, because of the Emotion Engine.

You can take Sony's words and be optimistic that when the 60GB are done and soled out the $599 80GB version, will phaze in the 60GB's spot with the 60GB's price.

But how long will the $599 80 PS3, stay at its price-point? I would expect, they have to sell all the 60GB models, before the 80GB model takes it's place. How soon is that?

They discontinued the 60gb. With all those 60gb's left since they have only sol 3.* million they have tons left of 60gb's. So they are right they have plenty left for sale at 499 when stock runs out which can be august, sept or OCt who knows. They will have 1 SKU. Then around Nov in time for Holiday they will drop the 599 back to 499 and have 1 sku. Unless they again go out and try to compete with the 120gb Elite that will also not be costing 479, comes christmas. So in reality both reports are true, Kaz is not lying with the discontinued 60gb and SCEA is not lying because they are right they have plenty to go around for both price points for a while.
