Microsoft Xbox 360 set to dominate

Analysis: The Xbox is now very profitable and is currently dominating game sales. This is set to continue with a whole slew of exclusives and with Natal scheduled for Q4 at $50.
Next year sees the Xbox 720 which will be backwards compatible with the 360 and eight times as powerful.
The fly in the Microsoft ointment is that they have badly screwed up mobile, which is set to be the biggest area of computing and gaming.

ME2 already is selling fantastic, and general software sales always do better on the 360.

I'm really split on GOTY this year. GoW is the PS3 fan favorite but Reach, TLG, and many other games are all heavy hitters this year.

I think we will have another 09 situation where God of War is going to be more of the same we've come to expect and it will easily win many GOTY's. However, I personally am going for something a little more unique in TLG. Much like how Demon's Souls won my GOTY in 09 I am banking on GOTY 10 to go to The Last Guardian.

So why are profits up? Because the 360 is selling so well? No! Profit went up because the 360 is slightly cheaper to make, they slashed 360 marketing by almost $100 million and they laid off over 1600 Xbox staff!

This is false..according to Microsoft of all people! Microsoft said, unequivocally, that 360 game revenue is falling. It's right in their financial report, for everyone to see. But, here's Bruce, falling all over himself to declare the 360 the winner and still champion.

Bruce, the 360 is in decline. Sales are down. Revenue is down. Microsoft is slashing the Xbox division and the 360 has been outsold ever since the PS3 became available worldwide.

And then you start on about Natal. Quick question, buddy. Who's going to buy Natal? The casuals? Yeah, they're going to rush down to the store to buy a 360 and happily plunk down an extra $50-80 to play Milo when they could buy a Wii, for less money, and play Mario - a character everyone knows and loves. Most casuals aren't even sure what an Xbox is, but I can bet you their wives know what a Wii is, because all their friends have one. So that leaves the hardcore and we know they aren't shelling out extra cash to throw virtual paint on a wall and make elephant shadows.

You're only declaring that Xbox 360 doesn't have games with stellar graphics. It's not truth, it's only your opinion. Graphics is a sbjective term, it means visuals. Both consoles can have "impressive visuals" if you want to see them as impressive. Likewise you can chose NOT to be impressed.

You can't really say that one console has better games or games with better graphics than the other. If you want to measure graphics by sophistication or cutting edge techniques than why not give credit where its REALLY due. Not to the console but to the developers.

The reason why my posts always quote the hardware specs is because I'm showing the ignorant guys here that it's not the hardware that's holding Xbox 360 back. It's developer support and the quality that they produce. In a way it's actually the multiplats that have hindered Xbox 360 as most developers see oodles of money to be made through utilizing a single engine or development platform and milking it as quickly as they can to produce results on a yearly basis.

From a fiscal standpoint you see the dilema: should I make 1 game in 4 years and charge $60 for it or should I make 4 games in 4 years and make back 4 times as much.

It really is disturbing to see some 360 bashers cling to the figures in the 2009 financial report, which are now between 6 months to 18 months old.

Fact is,
Bruce is talking about the Q2 2010 statement.
That means Bruce IS right and Bruce HAS done his homework!
I just wish the 360 basher(s) could see that their own homework is sorely lacking indeed!

With that out of the way, let's consider the real, up-to-date facts:

The 360 now costs less to make than ever and it is likely showing a profit.
The EADD division is showing 188% INCREASED profit, year on year, even while revenue has declined.

While it may be true that some staff got laid off, thus saving some money, it is concurrently also true that NATAL has cost big development dollars and the marketing budget for that has been and will be very significant. Thus these two would effectively cancel each other, on the balance sheet.

Hence the only variable that's worth considering is the profitability of the 360 sku.
Clearly, given the 188% increase in EADD profits, the 360 is making money hand over fist.
It's not rocket science, it really isn't.
No amount of huffing, puffing and misquoting out-of-date MS financial reports will change this fact.

MS has really got the EADD cost side under control and the profits keep rolling in, despite decreased revenue, of that there can be no doubt.

That is based on an assumption. The assumption is that everybody agrees that those games are untouchable by any game on the 360. But the assumption is wrong.
Heavy Rain looks good because it has a realistic art style and very controlled environments, but I look at the textures and lighting and it isn't any better than many other games. It looks good, but go look at how good Indigo Prophecy looked on the PS2 and you will see that Heavy Rain is nothing surprising or exceptional. It has more to do with the controlled scripting and realistic art style. I have no doubt in my mind that if it were on the 360 it would look as good or better than it does on the PS3.

Uncharted 2 looks fantastic and in my opinion is the best looking game on the PS3, but it isn't that big of a difference from great looking games on the 360 like Gears of War 2 and Mass Effect 2. And Uncharted 2 is exceptional mostly because Naughty Dog are an exceptionally talented developer. If that wasn't the case, then we would see many games on the PS3 that look as good as Uncharted 2.

God of War 3 is another game some of you tout as being better than any other game, but many PS3 fans don't even agree with that. I look at it and it looks nice, but its graphics do not surpass some of the better looking games already out. http://ps3.ign.com/dor/obje... You say the 360 hasn't proved itself, but I play a game like Mass Effect 2 and it is right up there with anything I have seen. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are really even in terms of hardware performance. CellBE is no longer in production, however, because of its cost to revenue generation so far. Xbox 360 ended up being the most fiscally sound investment in technology for EITHER company as it helped Microsoft maintain such a low price point and still provide an exceptional platform for development. However Nintendo ends up with the most return from their even cheaper platform, lol.

I did NOT say ANYWHERE in my above statement that the architecture is the same.

In fact I pointed out exactly where Xbox 360 trumps all over PS3. Facts are harder to swallow the first time but you get used to the taste eventually.
Memory:

PS3- 256MB of XDR + 256MB GDDR3. memory is dedicated to its respective purpose and cannot be shared. when RSX offloads work to the CellBE it will in turn utilize ITS own pool of memory, but they are not connected in any way. the XDR is tied to the CellBE through FlexIO.

360- 512MB of GGDDR3 + 10MB eDRAM. having a single unified pool of memory IN THIS APPLICATION works best, since Xenos already has its own cache of memory for the framebuffer. and anytime it needs more memory it flushes the current framebuffer to the 512MB pool and thus has 10MB of eDRAM ready again through a process called tiling.

Graphics:

PS3- RSX gpu, 24 pixel shaders + 8 vertex shaders arranged as a standard shader array. vertex performance is severely hampered as well as overall pipeline efficiency. needs to offloaded work to the CellBE.

360- Xenos gpu, 3 16-pipeline universal shader arrays arranged in a 48-way dual-parallel unified shader core. support for hardware tessellation. Xenos' 10MB eDRAM "intelligent memory" daughter die also has 192 pixel processors plus additional logic for buffer operations (MEMEXPORT) and superior antialiasing performance.

The short answer is that multiplatform development stagnated a "pop icon" like Xbox 360 because devs saw quick money to be made, and thus less interest in making games like God of War III which take years to develop but only make back what ONE $60 purchase can make versus 4 in the same time.

Dragon Age? Sure it looked a little better but did it perform better? No. The frame rate on the 360 version was much better. Either way, both games were a port of the superior PC version. I find it hilarious that you would even bring up a game that looks so mediocre. Also, Bioware didn't make the Dragon Age for 360/PS3, the developer "Reality" did. Spread that around to your PS3 fanbaby friends. Mass Effect 2 may come to PS3, but Bioware probably won't develop it as they don't have PS3 experience.

Where did you pull that from? I spend a lot of time on beyond3d and I know for a fact that nobody knowledgeable would agree with you. The general consensus is that the 360 has certain advantages and the PS3 has certain advantages, but the overall power of both consoles is in the end very similar.

It sounds like you have bought into Sony's ridiculous marketing with regard to the PS3. Sony exaggerated the PS2 capabilities as well and it turned out to be far weaker than they had led on. Sony's aim was simple; they played up the capabilities of the PS3 in order to hopefully slow the adoption of the 360 and get people to wait for the supposedly more powerful console. Sony did the same thing against the Dreamcast.

I guess you just ignore all the developers who have said the two consoles are basically equal. Or the lead engineer of the CPUs in both consoles who also said they are quite similar.-

Well, it's simple, either Natal will appeal to both HC and casual or it won't appeal at all.

If casuals want motion controls, wouldn't they get a Wii?
So MS wants the HC or semi-casual gamer.

However, unless MS can magically produce HC games while getting 10-15% less power out of their CPU, and you can basically eliminate online play with Natal in it's current state due to lag, Natal will be synonymous with "casual games".

They may be able to remedy the lag, but the CPU consumption is not so easily tackled.

So who is MS target audience?

Sony is aiming for the middle ground with some hc software and some casual stuff (as they always have, KZ2, Demon's Souls, Singstar, Buzz)

MS is either targeting a casual market which is already over-saturated and quite content.
OR
A hardcore market, where the games won't be up to the standards they expect and online play will be highly troublesome.

Of course we can all expect a HALO NATAL, and many loyal xbox fans will get Natal, just like they got Halo Wars, heck they might even get the matching Halo branded orange jumpsuits as well.
But will Natal draw new gamers in? Not likely IMO.

The thing already have a 100 ms lag and that too with 1 player onscreen. Make that 4 and that number will shoot up. And that too it's the "Said from the company" thing... It's like car company who say this car gives an average of 15KMPL so you count only 10-12.. Same is the case here. If the dev say 100ms, we can be realistic and map out 150ms.... Now add another 100ms for online due to latency and there is no way something with a Quarter of a second delay is working online.

I really do think that Natal could be a game changer...
Its for the casuals but its different enough from the Wii to make Wii owners upgrade...

This is how I see it, Pretty sure PS3 is either on par or outselling the 360 worldwide. It has many more high end exclusives and 1st party studios producing fantastic exclusive titles. 360's 'exclusives' are all slowly creeping over to PS3 with the exception of a few. Sony still have plenty of room for a lower price bracket for the PS3.

The list goes on, to me, it seems Sony is on the up and the 360 is slowly on the down. Yep, mass effect 2 is great - do you really think it won't end up on PS3...? really?

I understand your point, but it is rather weak. The PS3 and the Wii came out at roughly the same time, but that didn't stop the Wii from trouncing the 360's sales (and PS3's since) even though the 360 had the one year head start on the Wii, just like the PS3.

By all rights, the PS3 should be killing the 360 in sales, but it's not. And yes, I'm using the Wii as an example of "killing" in sales.

I can understand saying they are close and saying you think Uncharted 2 looks better, but we know you are coming from a place of fanboyism if you say it looks "way better". There is no way to justify such hyperbole.

Maybe it's because I played ME2 on PC. But other than the faces the textures on the characters when they are speaking are horribly pixelated. Look at the weapons and even the armor when the characters are in portrait mode speaking.

But like I said maybe the PC makes it seem worse. Btw I play in 1920x1080 with all settings maxed so it's not my computer.

It's pretty silly to argue ME2 vs. Uncharted 2 for visuals. Even character animations and movements are more fluid and realistic in UC2. If by chance you play UC2 you'll notice that the body language does pretty well to enforce what the characters are saying. ME2 was nice faces with robotic movements and minimal facial expressions.

That's not even mentioning the outdoor environments. Uncharted 2 was amazing and at some points in the game I was blown away by the outdoors. There we a couple of time in ME2 when I was blown away by the environment.One of those time was the first time you are on the collector ship. Good feeling that ship was massive. But really other than that it was like a 3d game rendered on a 2d picture in the background. And most missions took place inside buildings filed with small cramped tunnels.

Don't get me wrong the games are both me2 and uncharted 2 are both amazing and well done. And the game play is all that should matter shouldn't it? Try them both you won't be disappointed.

Also is ME2 really considered an exclusive even though it's for PC and Xbox?

The podcast I listened to today made Natal sound like a damp squib,saying it knew many devs scaling back their budgets for games.Apparently the loss of a chip is making devs lose faith already.
I can't remember which podcast but I listened to some Videogamer ones,4 guys 1up and IGN UK today.
Bungie said they will not be using Natal(gamecentral.co.uk)and how can they?How can anyone who is doing high budget,hardware stretching stuff use Natal if it's CPU budget is anywhere between 10% and 33%.

Not complaining just stating my opinion. Being that ME2 has been out for a 2weeks and M$ only bragged about how many copies were sold. If it had moved a lot of consoles, M$ would have posted it. They never pass up a the opportunity to state how many consoles they have sold.

I still have the original 360 from a few weeks after launch, I have a Wii but not a PS3. Funny thing, I have 6 yes 6 PS2s not one of them work properly, they all have laser problems. Unlike you I aint bullshXtting either..
I also have an original Xbox. Its still going strong.
Whats so complicated about upgrading to a 360 with Natal from the Wii.

Also do you know MS shaft retailers with draconian conditions for selling there consoles to them as in exchanges are fine but you want refund you need authorization from MS which I seriously doubt is the case now as one major retailer here took it to them and was going to stop stocking there console.

Simply put retailers would try everything not to refund you even though in the end they would have to because MS would not reinburst them without there astriction to do so.

What ticked me of and pushed me over the edge was I got this authorization from one MS customer service rep took it to the retailer who need to confirm it with MS only to get a secomd MS to the store manager saying no only exchange.

WELL MICROSHAFT SCREEW U IT"S ON AND I WON! eat that humble pie pricks and even had store manager laughing his head of when i went RAMBO on MS in front of customers.

Said things he couldn't being his position and all and wonder how many sales they lost that day.

When we had problems with our PS2s Sony basically said screw you and we had to pay to get them fixed or risk trying to fix them ourselves. At least if your 360 does have a problem it gets fixed for free. Besides, the problem is negligible now on the 360. New ones run really cool and work great.

If the xbox 720 is fully backwards compatible with 360, then the hardware will similar and use a IBM CPU. What I really want to know is whether or not 720 will be using two GPU's similar to Crossfirex/SLI, and if so, then how will they cooled? Will the future console use water-cooling and smaller chipset. Will switch from ATI to Nvidia and if possibly use the Fermi-based GPU.

If anyone does not look at the 360 and the RRoD problems it has had since release and think to themselves 'desperate rush to market' then they are kidding themselves. Microsoft's only, and I mean only, real advantage this generation was releasing their system a year before the competition so it could have time to establish itself.

The fact that the PS3 has continued to chip away at the 360 in terms of console market share is proof of this and this doesn't even factor in what the 360 market share actually is when you realize that there are literally hundreds of thousands of them that no longer work.

The 360 has gotten to where it is now by having Microsoft throw piles of money at it.

First off the 360 is not profitable just look at microsofts own comments on the system, and you will see they lost billions of dollars on it. Second does anyone really think that a 50 dollar Natal will be any good, a machine with the tech they claim that it has would cost more or be crappy. Xbox 720 really no one thinks this is going to happen I know, when I started talking about in september everyone jumped down my throat like xbox did not need a new system. Does everyone think differently now, and why would they make it b/c just cause you want it to be, no the 360 wasn't b/c and the next one won't be either. If they do announce a new system it won't take long for them to stop supporting the 360 just like they stopped support of the orginal xbox when they brought out the 360.

All I see is articles on, "XBOX 360 SET TO DOMINATE 2009" and "XBOX 360 SET TO DOMINATE 2010". Unless these analysts have a crystal frickin' ball in their room, I ain't going to be listening to them.

Instead, I am going to see how everything plays out and hopefully we'll see a large variety of new and interesting games as well as peripherals for all consoles. Hopefully, it'll be a great year to be a gamer. :D
