Sony to drop a "Bombshell", Wii dividing market

Sales of the Xbox 360 in Europe have hit a wall according to a new report from Screen Digest, which suggests Microsoft is struggling to expand the user base for the next-gen console.

The report also observes that the Nintendo Wii is dividing the market, with some publishers happy to ride Nintendo's coat tails to pick up business with poor quality titles, while others are betting the farm on the innovative machine.

Screen Digest is an industry analysis group. They make a living doing product and industry research. If you want the "proof" as you put it then pony up the money and BUY the report. And just like it isn't legal for Gameindustry.biz to post the findings in the report it isn't legal for you to either. GI.biz is only allowed to summarize the report.

i just got back from france LAST NIGHT from a weekend of 24 hrs of le mans and site seeing in paris.

let it be known that paris was flooded with xbox360 support in various electronics/gaming stores with windows cluttered with promotion of forza 2.
and at le mans, "sony" had display of their gt time trial event in the shell diesel booth and michelin tire changing contest booth both of which showed no clear definition that it was a ps2/ps3 game on display. but allbeit, check out the xbox360 promotional tent hosting similar time trials in their booth which was packed to the max, a great promotional event in my opinion. to say 360 is dead in europe is fanboy talk. it is sony land and ms is holding their ground over there.

btw, they also had forza 2 and xbox360 banner on the main straight by the pits, which is the most publicly exposed part of the entire track. i even overheard some brits talking

Any technological product that has been on the market for a year and a half without a price drop will hit a wall. There are only so many people that are willing to buy a product at 'full price'.

A price drop and a few 'casual' games would soon restart sales.

The article also mentions a PS3 bombshell (price drop and home) which in my opinion would be huge if MS and Nintendo were standing still but unfortunately their not. What difference does it make if the PS3 comes down to £300 - £325 if the 360 is £200 and the Wii is £150?

If you scroll down to TheMarts post you'll see that the Xbox 360 is currently beating the PS3 in sales in Europe and North America. Also you must remember that Microsoft has a gigantic lineup that starts mid-summer and goes all the way to New Years. But you should also remember that 2008 is the year the PS3 will finally drop their big games on the market and make some money.

I don't think the sales have "hit the wall", the 360 sales have been somewhat level through the year. More system selling software will be out later this year for both PS3 and 360. Sony dropping there price and releasing Home isn't a bomb shell - it's what everyone in the world expects. But, I'm sure M$ will follow Sony if they do drop the price. Only time will tell! Whatever the case may be, the next-gen industry has been very rocky and almost everyone's predictions have been wrong. No one can predict what consumers want all the time, things change daily and companies have to be fast to respond to changing customer needs. Sjappie. Are you from the England? If so, the sales are ok in the UK (no numbers to confirm this). Remember, when they say Euro sales, its a wider area. Even if the UK is driving a majority of the sales, it is still hitting a wall, as this article states. While that may be the general feeling, we need numbers to prove this. Any statement that says that sales are hitting a wall will need the sales numbers to justify that point.

I think it's just that in EU less people trust Microsoft, it is like that in UK, most people are willing to wait for PS3 price drop than compromise on getting a 360 or will buy both. Plus Playstation brand is very strong in UK, I knew before the EU launch that the PS3 would do very well in UK compared to other territories.

By "hitting a wall" it means that sales aren't going higher than a certain point. But I think Halo 3 will spike sales for 360 and MGS4/FF13 for PS3.

and Halo3 will sell more then any of the 8-12 game Sony releases.

I'm looking at the numbers now and the 360 is beating the PS3 even in Europe. I know the truth hurts.. MS releases a Blu-ray add-on?

MS chose HD-DVD at launch because it was at the time the superior format. Now that Blu-ray has caught up with new codecs, etc they could chose to release a Blu-ray addon. Or even better a dual format player..

MS never married itself to a HD format otherwise you might of seen a faster HD-DVD built internal on the 360. Sony is the one that %100 committed to the Blu-ray format and it looks like it is going to work out. I really hate that suddenly movies have become a debate when we are talking about game consoles.

PS: It's great to see they announced yet another layer of DRM protection for BR discs. Anybody remember the little problem Sony had when it took it upon themselves to put spyware on all their customers PC's.. I bet they are licking their chops right now.

Why wouldn't a company that has an add-on peripheral for HD movies support whatever media is most popular? I know MS has aligned itself with HD-DVD but if the format tanks they will change their position. Who knows what the future will hold, I'm not a fortune teller as so many here think they are. Maybe digital downloads will take off, but with bw concerns I have my doubts. Maybe HD-DVD will stage a comeback? I think it's still too early to tell. Without studio support I think it's not going to happen. If MS finds themselves in a position where HD is purely a Blu-ray format it would be stupid not to support it with an add-on.

5/6th of 360 owners in Russia had the modified DVD-drive consoles. I bet the same situation in the Baltics and Eastern Europe.

The real battle is between x360 and PS3, since x360 is dead in Japan and its being outsold by the PS2 in the States and it barely sells in Europe, things are not looking good for it, long term PS3 will destroy it with the best games and for now they should be happy PS3 cost 200$ more and they had that one year early launch even though now they atill support dead format like h-dvd.

Dont be naive, listen to this. How many of the best games of your gaming lives have come from east asia. What consoles do most of these companies produce games for exclusively or not. Why are they gunna stop? My point is japan is like milan. The fashion capital of the world. It dictates what happens around the world in terms of trends and styles. The ps is not on fire in japan because theres not enough of a catalyst YET, Whatever sets the ps3 off in japan will set the rest of the world off even the US. All the hardcore 360s are sold already. Casual gamers may care more about reliability than the hcore guys. Sales would be better if there wasnt this reliability problem that is now surronding the 360 in europe. The rrod even made WATCHCDOG. Some talk about the variety of the 360's library................. with some of you guys, MS has crappy service, While on the phone they are so nice and helpful but yet i waited 4 months for my wireless headset(march2nd or 3rd i sent it in.), they make mistakes all the time, I will give proof to whoever asks. So i can see consoles not being returned in time, fualty products will hurt sales in the long run and they took to long to fix the issues.

For some reason even though its summertime and its slow for everyon its not slow for the wii, you cant find them. At the same time I have this feeling that sony will deliver so mnay games at once plus drop price and it looks like they will win the blueray war and that alone will have mor epeople buying the ps3, allt he ps2 ownrs who still odnt have one will buya ps3 in 2 years. Now the headstart ms has is helping and the fact they had a game like gears is good becuase it instills the fact that the 360 is powerful so thats not debatable anymore, powerwise these 2 systems are equal, But while the 360 has the better online service,unified and simpler to use, even though it has more exclusives this time around and more big games coming which is always a plus for us I still have this feeling which I have expressed before, that is, in 1 year to 2 years no matter what MS does, sony keeping the online free and home free plus a tons of games coming all at once like I have read today will lead to sony winning out in the end, for some reasonI see the wii collapsing in sales in 2 years when theres no games and it follows the route of the n64 and gamecube, thats not a diss towards nintendo but just what i think.
