There's no need for a new Xbox, says Microsoft

"I think it's important to say that the Xbox 360 is the console of the long future for us. There is no need to launch a new console, because we're able to give this console new life either with software upgrades or hardware upgrades like Project Natal," said David Hufford, senior director of Xbox product management in a briefing at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. it's like they aint even trying to take steps ahead for the future. Instead they'Re taking steps backwards. natal beign Weaker than the normal X360 , No blu-ray , No 3D. This really shows that the X360 was released prematurely.I'm Pretty sure After I get my hands on the Xbox360 games for 2010 .I'll be playing most of the good stuff on a PS3 in the future.

i'm pretty sure by 2015 there's going to be a new Xbox and PS3. But I know is that if there isnt a new Xbox by then everybody will have moved to PS3.

They didn't pull the plug on the PS3 the first two years when it was loosing millions and selling miserabily.

They didn't pull the plug either on the PS1 untill 2004, even if the PS2 was already a major success in 2002 with more than 50 million unit sold.

The difference between MS and Sony is that Sony has way more foresight and a business model that helps them make money in the long run.

MS is always in for the quick cash, their moto his "every dollar spent has to bring in three", so they're always looking for ways to make a short-term profit on their hardware products (most of the time by cutting corners to minimize the costs) and if said product fails to bring them money in they just drop it.

Jamie, how in the world did you read that and come up with the idea they are putting ALL their faith into motion control, no its just a big part of their plans, its their next "new thing" why would they not talk about it in every interview, they are salesmen and PR guys, its like saying Honda's putting ALL their faith in hybrid cars just because every car show, every interview they talk about the future of their hybrid cars, they have neon signs pointing out how their the leaders in the hybrid market, how their innovating it, whats new, blah, blah,= PR no its not called all your eggs in one basket, but its a big part of their future plans, so NOT talking about it every opportunity you get is not only a missed-opportunity to sell the product but it has a added negative reprecussion of people thinking you're really not serious about the product, microsoft are great at PR, lesson #1, If you dont push or have faith in your product nobody else will.

That's not the problem. It's Great they're are planning on supporting the console untill that late but they're doing it the wrong way. Dont forget that with Natal the games wont look as good as the best looking xbox Games. So that's already a Flaw and we're in 2010 and we'll be using Natal troughout 2011 etc etc. While PS3 will Getting Better Graphics Xbox Natal game are getting "uglier". thats good.

PS: I saw Crackdown 2 and it looks exactly like Cracktown 1 so Imagine in 2011 when they'll release the 3rd one I wont expect any bigger leap or improvment. I'm waiting on Fable 3 next month to see how much the graphics "improved".

Anyway I do believe Natal will be like a new launch of the console. I was in gamestop today picking up some Microsoft points and a soccer looking mom with her kid and the GS employees were talking about Natal.
The lady brought it up while buying Wii peripheral(WII FIT PLUS) she brought it up implying that she would save money on different games with Natal. Everybody at the store was talking about it after that. We all talked about Natal for 15 minutes and bashed the Wii for not having anything going for it, even the people buying Wii products and the gamestop folks selling these products to them.

The limitations for the 360 are already clear as day, and without an addition of a blu-ray player, or at least drive then the quality of there games will never get any better, and I know alot of people say oh well there goood enough, but with rescent sony games like Infamous, Uncharted 2, and Killzone 2 looking way better, and having in game content that cannot be accomplished on the 360, just think what the differences will be in the next year or two. When games on the PS3 are coming out that blow Uncharted 3 away and the 360 still isn't past gears of war they do need a new console.

Blaze are you kidding? Microsoft have tried to discontinue support for windows XP twice to force customers to buy vista and only after consumer backlash did they begrudgingly support it.

You are very right, Sidar. Microsoft has to say this. They will have a new console or continue to lose market-share. Sony's PS3 is starting to be what they've been meant to be.

But this leads to another problem for Microsoft---when to release the "720"? Do it too early and it will come out right into the PS3's stride.

Wait too long, however, and the same problem will occur, with only an already out-dated system as a weapon.

In the end, the 360 came out too early.

The company really believes they can change gaming, just as sure as they thought they could change gaming with online half a decade ago and even more so with the launch of the 360. All the top developers also agree and this is why they are supporting Natal.

How can it be a bad thing? The 360 is a very capable machine, the hardware problems are behind it, great games are being released on the console, and I'm loving what they console is bringing in general.

The PS2 felt like old technology by the time the Xbox was released, but Sony continued to support it and games continued to be made for it so the fact that it was weaker hardware didn't really hurt it.

Now, we have the 360 and PS3 which are basically as powerful as one another (as many developers and engineers have told us) and it is good to know that both companies plan to support the machines well into the future. Remember that just because these consoles will be supported for a long time doesn't mean that new consoles won't come out sometime before that. I'm guessing around 2012.

Hutch...MS might have made 8 billion in profits...but NONE of that came from the games division. It has been struggling since the inception of the original Xbox. Between R&D on a new system, purchasing of the studios that they DID go after, and the "issues" that have had to be addressed with the 360...MS as a game division is still in the red.

Jamie...it is estimated that the RROD issue could end up costing MS as much as 3 billion dollars by the end of this year.

I am not saying this to BASH MS...as Sony have had issues remaining profitable, although the worldwide recession didn't do them any favors with the dollar vs. yen. I am saying this to simply state that I don't believe that MS even CARES about profits. I think that because they have such deep pockets, they believe that they can weather the economic storm and eventually start to make money in this area. Microsoft pays for the advertising it's not like a bunch of companies just support the 360, they get paid alot of money to do it. It failed because it never once made microsoft any money. In Australia ever since the PS3 upped to 120gig HDD we also have 250gig PS3 on sale for about $50 extra, both come in shop bundles.

The PS3 is sold out in many shops even though it's dearer than the 360 elite.

I put this more down to the fact that the shops can make a heap of extra cash out of a PS3 bundle sale than the 360 and Wii.

(1 shop has 6 PS3 bundles each one different and come with at least 3-4 games it's controllers and remotes etc that change with some extra games chucked in.)

That's besides PS3's also getting sold in home/mobile phone packs and TV packs as well.

You can get a PS3 straight up here for $20 a month over 24 months on some of these plans, TV bundles generally mean the PS3 is free with the TV.

I will be big enough to say that MS has done a hell of a job in this generation. They have managed to carve a nice piece of the gaming dollar for themselves. They have managed to create a flagship title that now is a "must have" for generations to come. However, they still need to become more diverse in the genres that they offer. THEY need more 1st party stuff...marginally better multiplats can't keep them in the race for too much longer. They need to make sure that they don't abandon the core group of gamers that got them this success. This is where NATAL can be pivotal. It can become their way of getting the casual (read Wii) dollar to commit to 360, but it might come at the HIGH cost of the core gamers. Or, it COULD be a new experience that appeals to the core and casual at the same time. If they nail the latter...they won't be stopped this gen. However, if ANYBODY nails that...they can breeze into the next gen with no problems and pockets full of cash.

The muli-plat's still run, sell and look better on the faulty 360. well not for me.I have owned my 360 since december 2005 and have never spent a dime fixing my 360. Still have and use the original controllers/recharge battery pack that i bought that day without a problem.

Wish i could say the same for my PS2 that broke twice in 2 years and 6 months and Sony not fixing it for free but charging me £150 to fix. Also my ps1 broke twice as well and later on, the only way it could work was for it to to be turned upside down.And please, dont even get me going on the amount of controllers i had to buy due to them breaking after 8 months.

If anyone should be mad at Microsoft it should be me. I'm on my ninth console(1 x RROD). Between Microsoft and Best Buy I have had nothing but great service. I even had the difference between the price I bought the 360 for and the price it is now refunded to me. They fix the issues I have, the are kind and professional when I need anything done.(License transfers etc).

However I'm mad at Sony for not wanting to have anything to do with my faulty PS3 which has tempremental on/off touch switch.

So when the next generation comes along I will be buying an Xbox and not a Sony. Why, because even though I have gone through 9 consoles Microsoft has done the right thing. Sony couldn't give a damn about my issues I have with their glorified blu-ray player.

Why do people act like Microsoft was being generous when they gave everyone a 3 year warranty with their Xbox? The damn thing wasn't working and it was scaring customers off, they didn't have a choice! You can bring up issues you had with your PS2, PS1, PS3, it doesn't matter, there's no system that had so many issues as Xbox 360 (especially with install base it had). It's stupid blaming Sony for not having the most unreliable system created and not giving everyone 3 year warranty because of it. The Wii is just a Gamecube with Motion control and it did OK with outdated graphics and everything.

I think the graphics are good enough on both the PS3 and X360 for them to last another 4-5 years.

Nobody seems to want to acknowledge that, even today, the Wii is selling rediculous numbers. Sure, its all casual players buying it and you could argue that this is why the "mature" games tend to fail on the console, but on the same note a lot of those mature games (like Madworld) weren't that great anyway.

Then, Microsoft tries to get into the game and all anyone can say is "how is Natal going to work with mature games?". The point is, it might and it might not, just wait and see, but it'll definitely work for "casual" games so all this talk about "lack of power" is meaningless, the 360+Natal will still be bigger and better than the "Wii HD" that simply doesn't exist. Don't doubt the fickle mind of the casual gamer, this could easily be a big win for MS. And if it's not, it doesn't matter, the next generation isn't that far away (regardless as to what they say, they just don't want people holding off buying a system if they feel a new one is due out soon).

In fact, if I was a betting man, I'd say Microsoft is going to run the 360+Natal and the next gen systems side by side for a few years. Natal can grab the casuals with its motion controls and low price point, the 720 (or whatever) can grab the hardcore, who are prepared to pay £300 for a brand new system.

"Saving face" may be a part of it, but that is only a small part. The issue is how it would split the 360 userbase in half.
Think of it like the Hard Drives, most games are designed to work without the hard drive (That doesn't mean they wont make use of it if it is there!) because its the lowest common denominator and will run on all 360's. If you publish a game on a BR disk for the 360, you know the only people that would POTENTIALLY buy it are those with a BR drive. So developers wont bother, there'll only be one or two titles that use it and even then, they'll probably still come out in multiple DVD format.

If you wanted it just to watch movies, well why would Microsoft do that? They have their very own Movie service that runs through the Zune Marketplace. Why would they release an accessory that directly helps a competetor (And I mean Sony's Blu-ray films, not their PS3 console)? That's like Sony releasing the Zune Marketplace on the PS3.

I'm not saying I agree with the choice, I'd love to have a cheap blu-ray accessory for my 360 as well, but the point remains, "saving face" isn't the issue, money is.

I have read a ton of comments on here, but the bottom line is: are people still buying the Xbox 360? The answer is obviously...YES! Now, I have no more intentions on buying another 360 (I went through 5 of them), but do respect/like a lot of their great games. However, Microsoft knows that a new Xbox system is pretty much a must....at this point.

There are issues that neither David Hufford nor Fanboys are considering as 360 hurdles. DVD-9 is allowing pirating, gig space limitations on games (which is why there are excuse/purposely having multi disk games), and non-true HD visuals/audio experience. MS didn't have to go Blu Ray....if Halo and Gears kept RROD/E7 from destroying 360 sales, then I don't see how keeping HD-DVD,at least for games, would have done any damage. (I had the add on player, and Blu Ray was not that much better...IMO) What I am getting at is this: MS can't say their system is HD, because it isn't. GRAPHICS+ PHYSICS+ A.I. DO MATTER!!! At this price point, and seeing the gaming bar being constantly raised, it's an insult to people's intelligence to say otherwise. (Why do you think there's talk of Gear 3 being used with the newer Unreal Engine 4 Technology, and the "Crysis" devs. are working with console hardware now?) Imagine Halo...that looked and played like Killzone! (Stop the fanboy crap, because as a PS3 fan I would love to see Bungie and G. Games working together, on a PS3 FPS my damn self!) Also, it doesn't matter if MS has just as powerfull graphic capabilities as the PS3...if their processor is ineffective at pushing the Unit. (That is why the PS3 Cell Processor is great, and MS needs to try and match this...IMO)

In the near future, Xbox 360 with Natal will be like the Nintendo Wii with the Wiimote. No disrespect to the Wii, but Call of Duty 4 is a joke on that system. Any PS3 fan would be lying to themselves if they denied that Natal is at least "Interesting"..but they will also laugh at MS for trying to push advanced technology on a old hardware. The reason why is because we all know that MS is not trying to give away game systems like Nintendo is doing. This bundled product will cost a lot, so it's understood to expect a lot in return. Launching Natal, with the Next Xbox system, and Gears 3....ALL ON THE 1st LAUNCH DAY?!! Hey, I'm PS3 only this generation, but admit that Sony would be in serious trouble if MS considered this option.

i had a 360 for 3 years and thought it was very good, and subconciously found myself disliking the PS3 for no reason at all.

I was always thinking xbox this and xbox that thinking i knew the ps3, i then decided to get the sony machine and i was blown away.

im not being a fan boy at all i just know which is the better system and its the ps3 by a considerable distance and im not just talking about games, trust me the PS3 can do some clever stuff.

I totaly agree with you on that. Man, I had 5 Xbox 360's...5 OF THEM!! (Sold the last one to my cousin, had RROD in 3, and E7 in the 4th one) I decided to get a PS3 and bought Killzone 2, MGS4, and Uncharted 2.....and never looked back. 360 is a great product, but BLU RAY plus games, has no equal this generation.

yeah man, my buddy has been through 3 360s, I think it was 2 Disc drive failures and 1 RRODs. He just got a PS3 last week.

I don't understand how Xbox users can deal with this? With my PS2, it left a bad taste in my mouth (ill admit it) when my Phat had DRE, and couldnt play any new games anymore. I got a Slim line, and that has lasted forever.

What I find funny is that so many people are saying that for Microsoft Xbox 360 to continue to be viable that they have to adopt the technologies that Sony has incorporated into the PS3. The 360 is in its 5th year and has continued to put forth strong sales, even with the severe dearth of great exclusives in 2009. Microsoft has proven that they do not need Blu-ray to produce a quality gaming experience.

I understand the frustration that one can feel when things don't go as one hopes they will. So many are frustrated that the Xbox 360 continues to perform well, even though Sony's PS3 is slowly catching up in terms of install base. So many are frustrated that consumers are satisfied with a 3 year warranty against RROD and won't take to the streets in blind outrage. But the fact of the matter remains that Microsoft has tens of millions of happy customers who continue to buy software and peripherals and no amount of ranting on the internet is going to change that.

So if Natal can add life to the 360 then so be it. Let it happen and move on. If it can't, then very well. Microsoft can work to finalize the next generation of their hardware and release when the time is right. Either way, Microsoft's customers remain happy.

I am waiting for the article that says that Microsoft and the Xbox360 are the biggest consumer of the DVD media, keeping DVD alive. So i can have a good laugh. Don't get me wrong i love my PS3 and its Blu-Ray drive but at some point a media change for Microsoft will become mandatory.

And to all of you disagreeing with me thats fine. DVD will be around for a long time(software for example, no need for a larger media there).

By all means support you console to the ends of the earth, but a few minor add-ons do not necessarily revitalize a console( this goes for both sides).
Look at the Gun-con it is a failure this Gen by lack of support. Look at the HD-DVD add-on, it fell as part of the hd upgrade war. Microsoft doesn't have to support Blu-ray, that support would be like admitting defeat. So they hype and support digital download. Fine by me. i have little to do with digital download in regards to full games.

Being a PC gamer I sit atop Mt. Olympus looking down on the console wars viewing the carnage and today is another sad day for xbox owners. CES 2010 sucked (for PC Sony and Microsoft)

I respect both consoles and was inspired by the XBOX 360 but when I saw the plans SONY had for the PS3 I knew this day would come.

Xbox fans use to just slander PS fans to death. Well Xbox fans your system (I know u love it) is deader than dead. Microsoft can careless about it's XBOX fan base because their main goal is Windows 7.

Sony on the other hand loves there PS3 fans because Playstation on a Sony TV go hand in hand. Sony has done everything to make the PS3 last for 10 years and are still making MEANINGFUL improvements.

The XBOX is not Microsofts concern right now and the immediate lack of support is showing it. The xbox lacks the raw power to compete with the PS3. Project Natal is a joke! An attempt to pull in Wii fans. It's all about money but XBOX is taking the easy route while PS3 is staying true to it's CORE audience. Just look at the EXCLUSIVE titles.

The PS3 outsells the 360 in Europe and Japan and is like one God of War III or Agent release from cathing up in the U.S.

The Xbox is not long lasting, not future proof, and is being delegated to competing with the Wii for 10 year olds while the PS3 competes with the PC for gamers and living room entertainment.

The xbox got a 2 year head start and all you heard was Halo this and halo that. Well in two years since the PS3 has surpassed the 360 so I think the Sony fanboys have the right to trash talk 360 fans.

I don't think David Hufford realize but I'm sure he does how many Xbox 360 people go through. But I don't think they would make a new design unless SONY makes a new generation of consoles. As an Xbox 360 fan boy, I beg to differ. I am on my fourth Xbox 360 since March 2006 and all I can say is... Hell yeah they need a new Xbox! My current one is on its way out as we speak. I switched to a ps3 because I was simply fed up with console. It was loud, expensive, rather ugly, broke down a lot such as overheating or freezing. I switched to a ps3 not just for the fact of a decade long life cycle (which doesn't even bring to mind the motion controller, which could potentially add 5-8 more years to that).

Microsft is just so damned greedy. Their PR's sound like tools with money falling out of their pockets, their ego a mile high, and a company that never really cared about it's fan base in the first place.

It's as if people said "we're the best. yup. Nintendo's Wii selling a crap-ton of consoles because of the motion controller business? we're in (I'm not saying that worked on it AFTER the wii, they's just impossible, but the Wii's success brought dollar signs to their eyes).
