Five surprisingly disappointing games of 2009

This article has got to be a friggin' joke. Barely any explanation as to why he didn't like the games. Take Left 4 Dead 2, he just screams '60 dollar expansion' and that's it. Where are the valid arguments, people?

I wouldn't say he didn't give any good reasons, but his list is entirely subjective, and thus, not really indicative of something newsworthy.

L4D2 is awesome BUT it's not worth 60 bucks. I paid $40 and I couldn't be more satisfies; however I would not have paid the full 60.

Other than that, I'd put Halo 3 ODST as the biggest disappointment. I bought it, played it for 4.5-5 hours (on heroic) to finish the campaign. So basically, it took me around 8 hours of total play time to get around half of the achievements. The multiplayer is literally the same as Halo 3, and fire fight isn't that great. Total rip-off. Good thing I bought it used and returned it the next day.

Anywho. I'd actually put Modern Warfare 2 up there. I loved CoD4 and played it extensively. But Modern Warfare 2 - I only played online multiplayer like 10 times then never went back. Same old and it bored me. Definitely dissappointed me.

I'd put Killzone 2 up there as well. It was THE reason I wanted a PS3 even since that trailer in 2006. Forget everything else, Killzone 2 was all I wanted. Finally got it, beat it, got the scout badge, never played it again - wasn't as great as I thought I'd be.

I'd put ODST up there too but can't say I was dissappointed with it as I already knew it was a $60 snatch and grab.

Killzone 2 was the biggest for me and I don't know why it isn't on the list. I purchased my PS3 for KZ2 and it was so broken after I beat it, I traded in at Gamestop(AFTER A WEEK). I also wasted my money on Infamous. I guess the only way to really tell what was a let down/disappoint in 2009, is by the sales in accordance to the supposed calibur of the AAA, WHEN IT COMES TO HYPE, BUDGET, AND PROJECTED SUCCESS.

KZ2 broken? In what way? It's probably the best FPS this year and one of the most solid online experiences around. There were some issues, but they were fixed and if you're talking about controls then the game is just not for you. It's not a game for people who like twitchy shooters.

My personal list
1)Prototype - i knew it wasn't very good so i rented it. Turned out worse than i expected, messy combat,horrendous graphics,story,and bosses. This game has the worst boss fights i've ever played.
2)Tekken 6
3)The Saboteur
4)FF13 - i have some buddies playing the Jap version and the stuff they are saying makes me cringe. I was EXPECTING a next-gen FF, thanks to SE(and maybe M$?) for wasting all those $$$ and years of production.

Only listed games i bought/rented so if i have to add a fifth it will be..

5)MW2 - did not buy it but even watching the trailers left me disappointed at how little the game improves on COD4.

I wouldn't say Killzone 2 is broken, but it had a rocky start.

Like MW2 or any other game, it's got its flaws and its rocky starts.

What I find weird with K2 is that it had a beta, but no one really used it to give feedback. I guess everybody was happy it finally came out. Then, after the game the complaints started rolling in and then GG made changes.

One of the biggest and most annoying things with K2's launch was the stupid shotgun auto aim. Luckily that got fixed.

I suppose the biggest annoyance with K2 I have now is death lag. It's absolutely annoying when two people in a firefight both die. I used to post a lot in the K2 forums and this was an issue that was supposed to get fixed. I hate the people that decide to ignore the region filter. Playing with people from Japan spells automatic doom. And God knows the clan system is absolutely broken and full of cheaters that GG does not punish. Speaking of cheaters the forums on K2 still complain a lot about lag switchers and cheaters, and I do wish it would get addressed whenever GG comes back from their break.

Anyways, K2 is just a game, and like any other game its going to have its share of issues. I certainly don't think it's broken though. What exactly do you find "broken"?

As for the aiming, they patched it with some sort of sensitive aiming option. I prefer it, though I'm not noticing a difference unless I'm sniping in which case the analog sticks are TOO sensitive.

Regardless, I think the controls got better after the patch.

While I didn't purchase ANYTHING that disappointed me to my personal interests, there are some games that would have disappointed me had I not only rented them:

-Halo: ODST
The Gameplay was there, the content was not. As an owner of Halo 3, all it contained for me was the short campaign and a new mode (Firefight) that didn't have matchmaking. A fun rental.

-Resident Evil 5
The content was there pretty well with this one, but the controls were chunky. Another fun rental, but sometimes infuriating control.

And I agree with him. The game isn't that different from the first. That doesn't mean the game isn't fun or a good game, but it's not worth 60 dollars for L4D2 if you already have L4D. The only differences are the locations, 2 weapons, a couple new items which aren't as good as the items in the other game (who honestly takes a defibrillator over the health pack or acid over a pipe bomb?) and three new boss zombies. The game honestly has a very short list of improvements, some of which aren't really improvements. I really wouldn't use melee weapons ['cept for sh*ts and giggles] or the other items at all if I wasn't forced to on very rare occasion, and the new bosses are just gimmicky [one that pukes on the ground, one that charges you, and one that humps you in the face, not nearly as cool or terrifying as the original four]. Which brings me to another point, the original game had a real element of terror to it because the bosses were new at the time and due to the level design. In this one, I just feel like I'm strolling through the park, and any fear I might have felt is replaced with frustration because the stupid tank can still take you out from a mile away with crazy homing concrete rocks even when he's not standing on concrete and hidden behind bushes.

Since there's no story at all, it really does start to look like nothing more than an expansion, since all of the improvements, sans new levels, could have been added to the original game in one, very small, DLC package. It's still good for a game of multiplayer, but as a single player experience, there's absolutely nothing to it. There isn't even a significant graphical improvement. If you don't have Left 4 Dead, buy L4D2, but if you have L4D, do not, I repeat, do not waste your money buying L4D2 unless or until the price is dropped to a quarter of full price. This type of laziness in development should not be condoned, and I'm kind of pissed at Valve for this, and for a few other reasons. Problem is, most Xbox fans will gobble up anything that involves guns (let alone zombies), especially if it's from Valve, Bungie or Epic, which is all those studios ever produce anyway. It's a shame too, because I used to be impressed with Valve.

No one has posted differently, and most people who have posted after me have agreed with me and said basically the same thing. L4D2 is a cheap trick, and if you can't see it for what it is, then you shouldn't bother posting to this site. There is no story. It's pretty easy to be better than nothing. If anything, Valve just chose to put it in a slightly more controversial area, one which just so happens to have recently suffered a real natural disaster of national importance, but you aren't publicly aware enough to be in any way sensitive to that fact. As an attempt at social commentary, which any good zombie story is, it fails utterly. Which brings me to another point, there's no sense of culture in L4D2. Sure L4D1, who knows where it took place, but this game is supposed to take place in Louisiana, the deep south, Cajun Country, but there's no sense of that in the game at all. There's no spice, there's no culture, there isn't even music for christ sake. Aside from the weird screeching stiletto change up that occurs whenever a boss or swarm shows up, there's no auditory depth to this game at all. Seriously, this game just peeves me beyond belief, and people who don't see it after I've pointed it out to them so clearly are blind fanboys.

This really doesn't flow with me, the fact that you are saying L4D2 doesn't have a story? If you were to actually pay attention to what's going on in the game i.e. speech dialogues between one another as well as reading what's in the safe houses you'd understand most likely what's going on. Read the walls that's where the story is at, if you want to run and gun by all means do so but doing that will make you not know wtf is going on. On the other hand reading will let you be informed and tell you the actual story. Reading is your friend!

There is a Story

At the start of the game the 4 survivors are trying to board a helicopter but it flies off with out them, Ellis says the helicopter is heading for the mall.
so the first campaign is to get to the mall, when you get to the mall the helicopter has long gone and the only transport is a muscle car, the ending to this campaign is to fill the car with gas and leave after 2 more chapters

The second campaign stat with the car braking down on the motorway, on foot you go of the motorway and through a Motel to get to an amusement park, the campaign ends with a helicopter lift after 3 more chapters.

The End goal is to get to New Orleans in the last campaign, this goal is mentioned between the characters when they notice a government diagram from the first campaign in the Hotel

L4D did not have a story as such as the campaign only linked after DLC such as crash course, with L4D2 all campaign link and have their own end goals

What you just described was *not* a story. All you described were goals, nothing close to a story. Try Uncharted 2 if you need to know what a story is. If anything you just described an online multiplayer game completely deprived of a story. Good job!

You're kidding right, that's hardly a story. The writing on the walls is witty at times, and it does give you an idea of the progression of events on an national scale, but it's not a story, it's there for the sake of providing atmosphere. The characters aren't even instrumental in the development of world events, they're simply subject to them. A group of people going from one place to the next, though it can be told in the form of a story, is not a story. But even if, for the sake of argument, we agree that there is a story, there's no depth to it. The dialogue between the characters is minimal and there's not a hint of what's fundamental to any GOOD story, character development, Social commentary (the suggestion that in any crisis the military will take control and try to solve everything with guns isn't a real social commentary, especially not in a zombie story, where that's pretty much a given) or emotional content. Compared to the last game though, which really didn't have a story to speak of, this game starts to look like Tolstoy. I repeat, it's not hard to beat nothing.

There's something to be said here about understanding rhetorical utterances too. When someone says that there is none of something, when there's obviously something there, they mean that what is there is not enough and is in fact so little that it hardly warrants their attention. If I open a cookie jar with one cookie in it, I'm going to say there's no cookies. If I grab the milk, and there's only one small gulp's worth left, I'm going to say there's no milk. If I read a book, and there's no character development, no real plot twists, no mystery, no social commentary, no emotional content, nothing other than a setting, characters and a series of actions that are all basically the same goal being repeated (get to the helicopter. Oh wait! something went wrong with the helicopter, now get to the car. Oh wait! something went wrong with the car, now get to the other helicopter. Oh wait! something went wrong with the other helicopter, now get to the city on foot. Oh wait! something went wrong in the city, now get to the boat.) I'm going to say there's no story.

And that still doesn't answer to the greater problem, that there just aren't that many other improvements either. There are improvements, no one ever said there weren't, but they're marginal. But what angers me about L4D2 is not L4D2, it's L4D1. 2 either isn't enough of an improvement on 1 or 1 wasn't a finished game. Have it whichever way you like, but Valve was lazy and released half a game as a full game one way or another.

Dragon Age did lack good graphics but I didn't care about that as much as the @rap load of glitchs, I laugh my butt off seeing my friend talk to a headless person again after he killed them and had to kill them again.

The game had way to many glitchs but it wasn't a bad title, TMNT was ok but I'm mad that they change somethings in it, other then that the game wasn't bad and me and my bro played it. We are both TMNT fans from when it first came out an this game was just nice to have for the next gen.

If the game had more work put into it, then it would be some bad and PC or no, it doesn't change anything. All it means is other ways to get more out of it, a PC and PS3 Dragon Age game would look the same or better on PS3 (Giving the PC isn't at Max then they would look the same) because the PS3 has a hard drive just like the PC.

So in the end it doesn't really matter what format it is for, just matters if they take the time to make both look the same or make it use the power of the system/PC.

P.S. If I get a new computer with windows 7, Dragon Age is going to be the only PC game I would have plan to get.

I hate to say it, since I'm a huge Valve fan girl, but even I don't love L4D2 that much.. L4D I played the shizz out of, hours and hours every day.. But L4D2 kind of went by the wayside.. I mean, the maps are fun, I really like hard rain and dark carnival and the parish.. But Dead Center was pretty disappointing.. I think it might be because I played L4D1 soooooo ridic much and L4D2 isn't all that different, and I've just grown tired of the same formula. I've actually been turned onto Nazi Zombies from COD W@W, and I really am having trouble going back. I got the game like two weeks ago, and ohemgee, it's amazing. People laugh since I'm only a rank one, but then I beat their booties most of the time. It's legit!

It's just kind of funner.

I think the biggest disappointment for me was Brutal Legend though. If it was hack and slash, I would have prob loved it, but the horrible RTS shizz.. Ugh. They ruined killing emos for me. Which is a very hard thing to do..

On a side note, happy new years. It's pretty sad I'm on N4G at 12:27 in the morning. Oh well.

My friend called me up to tell me they released the demo for it and I was counting the minutes for that bad boy too. He was like, "Your gonna love it!" I hated it, and the demo didn't even have the rpg elements in it. My friend, disappointed in my disgust for the game, bought it just to prove to me that it was awesome. He quickly ended up hating it. He didn't get half way through and called it a wrap. And L4D2 also did not impress. Maybe if it were discounted expansion or dlc I wouldn't have turned my nose up at it, but I certainly had buyers remorse after that purchase. Valve kinda blew it on that one.

Mega Man 9's retro soundtrack was a breath of fresh air and is one of my favorite soundtracks of the year. So really your saying the game was a disappointment because it had retro graphics? I bet the game was just too hard for you. Don't worry, Mega Man 10 will have a easy mode made so people like you can stop complaining.

The people slating Killzone are idiots.The single player was good with amazing graphics,great weapon feel and outstanding AI.It did lack the great set pieces of a COD style game and fell short of the very best but still good.The multi player was superb though.It is tense,fast paced,challenging and again looks sensational.It was also very well balanced once they dealt with Assault class.

I would have to agree with Left 4 Dead 2, but I think that’s just me. Since I can’t play online I just rented it and went though all five of the campaigns, got over 200 points in achievements and a health pack avatar award. Most people I know who were big Left 4 Dead 1 fans have purchased it and only played it once so perhaps that is saying something. Not that I didn’t enjoy some of it, it was nice to blow off some steam after a long day at work.

I don’t agree with Dragon Age being on the list. Although, I was never a fan of the top down view so I was fine without the feature in the console versions. But I’m sure there are a lot of people who want the view and that’s alright too.

The rest of them I have not played or for a very limited amount of time, so I really don’t have much say.

my personal dissapoints were:

Brutal Legend: loved the first 20 mins (basically what the demo shows) thought the rest of the game didnt know what it wanted to be hated the rts thats when i stopped playing. definatley be part exchanging it in the new year.

MW2: i'll be honest i wasnt looking forward to it as i thought it was getting a bit old quickly and got bored of cod 4 very quickly too. got it as a present also thinking about chopping it in.

prototype: i really cant believe poeple were trying to say this was better than infamous i honestly thought it was a bit of a broken mess another game with not much story or direction chopping it also.

red faction: nice game physics but a dull open world game. only so may times i could watch a building fall down. chopping.

these games will go towards mass effect 2 and probably darksiders.

l4d2 was the bomb it comes packed with more stuff then the first like a total of 30+ weapons where the first one had 4 it has melee weapons and 5 new campaigns where the first one had 4 this has a crap load of new stuff this guy blows

I do not see Left4Dead2 as just an expansion but I still was very disappointed with the game.

I also agree with Red Faction. My gf enjoyed the game somehow but I gave up after an hour in as it was boring to me.

You however did miss ModernWarfare2 and Halo ODST.

Dragon Age on PC was awesome, and the graphics are pretty good. And yeah, I payed 45 bucks for L4D2, and its awesome so I'm just gonna go out on a limb and say that this guy put those in the top three just to get hits,

THIS ISN'T A CONCRETE LIST OF DISAPOINTMENTS TO ME.

First of all, Dragon Age had to compete with Halo Wars, Tales of Vesperia, Lost odysee, and Demon souls. (Not to mention the KNOWN release date of FF in Japan) So, I would not count the sales of this as a big surprise.

The 2 PSN/XBL games don't count either, because they are cheaply made arcade games. Not like the GTA DLC stuff (Arguble cheap port material), which is a huge game, for only $20 or so bucks. There haven't been too many Arcade type games that killed in sales. (Exception to the recent Trials HD, Flower, ect..)

Left 4 Dead 2 has sold 2 million copies so far, thus making it a success. (I think this was just put up to intice PS3 fanboys) Killzone 2 (My 3rd favroit game on the PS3) has only sold 2.14 million...so that means that it too could have been on this list. L4D2 made damn good money, even if it is a "pricy" port/expantion. game.

2009 dissapointments:
-DJ HERO (I'm glad...they ripped off Scratch: The Ultimate DJ
-Tony Hawks: Ride (Need to go back to their roots)
-Killzone 2 (Not much of a dissapoint, but the 2.15 million sales does not equal the hype. Too bad to, because I love it..and don't understand why PS3 fans have not pushed this to 3+ million sales.)
-Forza 3 (YES...is sold very well, but this game got as much hype as Killzone 2, and still couldn't hit 2 million. NO way is this a GT5 killer. In fact, GT5: Prolouge killed this in sales!)
-MadWorld and The Cudult, (Wii)....the Wii is killing in sale, but not because of these two games. To bad..MadWorld is great!)
-Dead space: Extration (I loved Dead Space on the PS3/360, but this is not very fun.)

I got the Pc version and ive played every major game of the year title because i have and xbox 360 a ps3 and a gaming Pc and Dragon age is my game of the year by far. Uncharted 2 was great but it doesn't got me hook like crack or WOW. I cant put dragon age down its insane.

Dragon age is great...although sometimes my characters are so brain dead they stand around when i get pummeled on and i have to switch to them and start hitting...Do not mess with the tactics because it seems after i tried changing them they stated acting stupid.

I have played 3 of the five games mentioned in the article....red faction is a great game...along with dragon age origins..both have huge missions and great characters..I cant defend left 4 dead 2 much because I have not played it as much as both games but i can say I dont feel cheated with the game...welcome to 2010 with the ridiculous story's.
