'The Hangover' Dominates the Charts

The new releases of Hangover and inglorious basterds have propelled blu-ray to its highest earning week ever.The Hangover generated 24% of its first-week sales from Blu-ray Disc, another sign that the high-definition format is fast moving into the mainstream. Inglorious Basterds generated 33% of its first-week sales from Blu-ray Disc.

blu ray wont take over until the 35-60 demo takes off with hdtv, it will be interesting. 24% is not that great if you aske me considering all blue ray players play dvd's and when dvd took over people had to replace their vhs to watch them on their new dvd player so the comparaisn isn't a good one in my opinion. I love blu ray but I don't see my uncles/aunts who are intheir 50's adn 60's going out and buying hdtvs and blu ray players.

Dude, the 18-34 demo is the key demo for most entertainment items. While it would be nice to have the older demographic it's not crucial that not having it will keep blu-ray from taking off.

When DVD was at this point in its history I'm sure most older people were fine with VHS. They probably only really jumped on board when Blockbuster and other places stopped carrying VHS movies. Didn't hold DVD back. No one is saying DVD is going to disappear off store shelves in 2010 or even 2011, but you can't deny how successful the blu-ray format has been.

What about the other hundreds of Devs huh? Seems to be a lot more 3rd party devs making multiplat games then there are devs that make exclusive games.

How many exclusives released this year for PS3? And how many games released that were multiplat? I think you will see that blu-ray at this time is not needed except for those very small cases like MGS4, Uncharted 2 and FF XIII. However for the next gen (possible releaed in 2012 or 2013, yes DVD 9 and possibly a standard blu-ray disc will not be enough). At the moment there is just a very very small percentage of games released that utilize the space on a Blu-ray disc. Obviously increasing the size of a game to fill a Blu-ray disc requires more resources to create that game, which most developers do not have. Look at the world of Oblivion, Fallout Out 3, Liberty City, Prototype, Crackdown...etc. very large maps with many many hours of playability yet Blu-Ray not needed.

As for Blu-ray movies...i love them. My library is continueing to grow. My next movies are The Hangover, Inglorious Basterds, Terminator Salvation, 9, District 9 and many more.

DVD still has life left in it - especially for discount buys. Case in point - I bought Mystic River (excellent movie) the other day for $5.00 on DVD while its Blu-brother was $25.00 a few aisles over.

I typically buy Blu-ray for action and visually intensive movies. If it's a movie that really isn't enhanced by sharper picture, I would rather save 10-20 bucks and buy a few than spend it all on one disc.

Eventually when the pricing falls more in line with DVD pricing (especially on the majority of the old catalogs and for smaller releases), I think Blu will dominate - probably in 2-3 years or so.

it will take longer overall for this format to take over and dump dvd becuase the blu ray players play standard dvd's and with upscaling dvd players it would make no sense for them to stop selling dvd's like they did vhs tapes, so all the hype that it is ahead of dvd at this point is dumb. People bought a dvd player because they had to and then when the vhs machines broke down, like they did all the time, they replaced thier vhs movies with dvd, since dvd playes last longer and dvd's themselves last a lot longer than an old vhs tape, I think the target demo will jump ship first, but the others will not jump like they did when vhs died. So it will take far longer for blu ray to gain the marketshare that dvd did overall. Thats all.

I was always a quality over quantity guy. 3rd party games may outnumber exclusives released yearly, but if only 10% of them are worth a darn then what's your point? I know it's a matter of taste, but I think most of us would agree that PS3 exclusives are, by and large, better than 3rd party games. And I pointed to those two devs because they did some amazing things on PS3. What are you saying? Because so many 3rd party devs struggle that my point is somehow negated? Again, quality over quantity. Sony made an amazing piece of hardware but they didn't make it as easy to program for as the 360. But, if you're willing to put in the work, you can pull off some incredible things (again, see Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, Heavy Rain, etc).

Oh don't get me wrong. I believe Sony's 1st party Dev's have done a great job in making some of the best games this gen. Anyone who thinks otherwise are fanboys. However even you just said

Not all dev's have the money or the time to be able to utilize the size of a blu-ray disc. And Blu-ray is only a storage device, it has nothing to do with how a game looks or performs. Unless you want to talk about compression to non-compression but with today's Developers and the hardware, the Human eye cannot tell the difference between a compressed file or not.

Your point about if only 10% of those multiplats are worth a damn...thats still at least 2x as many as there were exclusives. Point is, you don't need a blu-ray disc to create an amazing looking game that plays great. Blu-ray only helps with the storage of the information.

What i am saying is your point is only focused on a very small percentage of developers when there are by far more developers out there that are 3rd party than there are in any of Sony's departments. So yes, your point is moot as it only applies to a small handfull of developers, and those are 1st and 2nd party developers that have the resources backed by Sony so they can create a game large enough and polished enough to utilize the size of a Blu-ray. would then only apply to those devs while the much larger game developer market would disagree with you. Like 2K, EA, Bethesda, Capcom, Bioware, Ubisoft and many many others who have made great multiplats and or exclusives without the need of a Blu-ray disc.

It's great to see Sony's 1st and 3rd party dev's doing such a great job on those games and to utilize the space on a blu-ray disc, this will help push the industry into making bigger and better games and will then apply pressure on Microsoft to create a new storage format as games will inevitably increase in size thanks to Sony. Good for the industry and the gamers like us.

When has graphics, pixels and fidelity taken over from acting immersion or character advancedment? I own Clerks 10th year special edition and I can safely say despite being in black and white and not the biggest of films it's far better than most hollywood films.

I am starting to buy BRs since the prices are now more reasonable.
Dist 9 for < 20 bucks with a God of War demo = ROCKS

Its good to see Sony knew what they were doing and didnt listen to the nay sayers about BR.
This year games will show its muscle with BR...later this year 3D movies with PS3 firmware upgrade = SWEET

MS and those who dissed BR are really looking stupid now...

MS don't diss BR, they don't support it because at the time, BR look like it wasn't going to last long or going to take too long for people to get use to, same thing like HD-DVD thats why they made it an 360 add-on. The idea that Microsoft had the same stake in HDDVD that Sony had in Blu-ray is WAY off and only exists in the mind of Microsoft hateboys. Blu-ray was Sony's tech and they had studios to dedicate to Blu-ray. Microsoft was simply a supporter. That's like saying Sony, the 5-star general of the Blu-ray Army, defeated Microsoft, the Lance Corporal of the HDDVD Army. Sony won the war because they were in perfect alignment from day one. Studios, tech, and the console to Trojan-Horse it with. It wasn't a matter of better or worse technology. It was just whichever the market decided to pick.

Long story short, Sony played their cards right against TOSHIBA. Microsoft wasn't even playing.

My launch 360 (3rd one and is running fine) I would gladly replace with a new 360 IF it had a BlueRay player. Why do I want to watch DVD9 on my 360, when the BR copies blow it away ? The 360 is in the den now vs in the LR hooked up to the HT.

MS wont include a BR player, cause now they are humping digital downloads, which is fine, but to their total ineptness, they were so short sighted, they gimped my launch 360 with a stupid 20G drive, which I cant use for digital downloads of movies or games.
So I am stuck with a working 20G launch unit which is gimped and we are in the middle of this gen..
Contrast to my launch PS3-60G, with a 250G external drive...and BR player...set till the end of this gen...never need to upgrade or look back

reading the comments above... most are just spin, spin, spin and you know you want our 360s to have a BR drive...stupid otherwise

Anyway, not a surprise to see Blu-rays take up such a large chunk of sales. New DVD releases are not exactly cheap, could be like £15 typically, and anyone who can afford to pay that much could easily pay £5-10 more for the higher quality of BR versions

Now that's good but it's also kinda of funny they pointed that out. The reason it was so high in the first week was because they are always discounted to $19.99 for the first week before they go to $29.99. I buy all my movies in the first week to avoid paying the $29.99 price tag. Does help explain why it sells so highly the first week. They BR sales probably go down after that, $29.99 is still a lot of money.

i jumped in early, around the launch of the ps3 actually. i love bluray but i'm not so sure i still agree with sony's use of the ps3 as the trojan horse for the format and regulating the system to 3rd place due to delayed entry to the generation and premium pricing. i guess it worked for CDROM for consoles on PSX and DVDs on the PS2, it's not surprising. i've not bought a single DVD since 2007... 300 blurays and counting!

I'm starting to buy more and more blu-rays but only movies like Terminator 2 or Dark Knight. Classics. The Hangover was just an average comedy. I really don't understand how anyone thinks that movie was funny. It was ok and everything but I only laughed about once or twice. And hasn't that plot been done with Dude Where's My Car? I'd rather pick a Tarentino movie anyways. Hangover was just a decent rental for $1 at the red box. I feel sorry for people who paid $30 on Blu-Ray.
