Famitsu FF XIII imperfect score explained, and all of FF games scores by Famitsu

VGArabia: Now with Famitsu's Final Fantasy XIII score is up (39/40), there are many fans who are questioning why the game hasn't got a perfect (40/40) score from Famitsu. Famitsu score system, which consists of four reviewers rating games on a scale of 1-10 has given the latest entry in the Final Fantasy series: (10, 9, 10, 10). So, what is the second reviewer reason behind giving the game a 9 instead of 10?

I prefer older FF games, FF9 and FFX.

RememberThe3575271d ago (Edited 5271d ago )

I like the more action based RPG over the turn-based method. But we all can't win; FF seems to be moving in a more western direction. We'll see how it turns out, because I don't believe a damn thing Famitsu says anymore.

BTW isn't FFV13 supposed to be that more old school style of combat?

EDIT: Good point about the character development. FF12 didn't do that in the best way, I will admit. But I have faith in FF13 it looks fun and I have yet to not have fun in a FF game so my hopes are up.

immortal845271d ago

The problem with FF XII is its story, how the game handled characters development wasn't great. Also, the story wasn't that good either. Regarding FFVXIII, I think the game will use a free roaming battle system as seen in Kingdom Hearts series.

Snoogins5271d ago

I enjoyed what they did with FFXII, which is what XI should have been. Still, my favorite is and will always be the masterpiece Final Fantasy VI. The characters, the story and Uematsu's memorable soundtrack blew me away when I was a child. <3 Aria di Mezzo Charatte <3

None of the videos I've seen for FFXIII have interested me as far as story is concerned, but I'm going to get it. I love Final Fantasy and need my RPG fix.

Marceles5271d ago

FF12's story wasn't too bad, but the dialogue was just...too much. I don't ever mind a good story but the game was overkill on dialogue.

Nihilism5271d ago

I loved XII, I wish to god ps2 didn't look so unbelievably bad on HDTV, I would give it another run through right now

boodybandit5271d ago (Edited 5271d ago )

why write an article explaining why?

coolfool5271d ago

Couldn't agree more! The character development in FFXII was terrible in that it basically didn't have any. I thought Vaan was going to start off as kid, foolhardy and naive but progress to someone more worldly an experienced but it didn't happen. Nothing about the events seemed to affect him at all.

The story just didn't feel like it went anywhere. All the hours the game took up was just in battling and leveling up. Even the side missions were battles.

Still, I have high hopes for this one. It sounds like most of my negative points in FFXII have been address and rectified in FFXIII. Well, here's hoping!

immortal845271d ago (Edited 5271d ago )

First of all, this is news not an article. The author is telling us why Famitsu hasn't given FFXIII a perfect score according to what they have said in the review.

immortal845271d ago

Yes, you are right. And thanks for agreeing with me.

GrandDragon5271d ago

Turn Base is what made FF famous and recognisable...

FF9 was pure AWESOME

bjornbear5271d ago

HOWEVER, i'm NOT a FF fan, so I can understand why its annying that FFXII got the highest score.

Foliage5271d ago

Imagine if they had made Balthier and Fran the main characters? Instead they chose a lame character for you to control, and tried to cover it up by allowing you to swap your primary character at any time. The story couldn't even be centered around the main character, because he just wasn't important.

You are left feeling like the events that occur are out of your control and you are just a witness. FF7 and FF8 did not have that effect. In both those games you were the clear leader of the group and when you faced hard times the progress of your team grinded to a stop. If you want a story driven game, the character you control most of the game needs to have some relevance.

They even butchered the revenge for his brother thing. No one could take the character seriously.

FF12 was a stepping stone towards FF13, which is a stepping stone towards Versus. Each game keep progressing, and soon these games will once again be a joy to play. With all that said, I sort of enjoyed the final boss battle, although it was just too easy.

AAACE55271d ago

I bought Socom Confrontation mainly because it has the headset. I was skeptical of the game because most reviews gave it a 5 or a 6. It does suck not to have a single player game, but it is still fun... and that's considering that I hated all the other Socom games in the past. The updates fixed alot of the problems people said the game had, and there are still a ton of people playing it... well... more than there are playing Killzone 2 anyway!

A score isn't everything people!

NOTE: I wasn't trying to bad mouth KZ2, but the way you guys hyped it up on here, I was expecting something truely magnificent. What I got was Killzone 1 with better graphics... not for me... no offense!

Noctis Aftermath5271d ago

The scores can also depend on what other RPGs have been released during the same console generation(FFXII 40 score stumps me still).
FFXIII has next to no competition, so all it's flaws(small or big it doesn't matter) will have less of an effect since good JRPGs are hard to find this gen.

Foliage5271d ago (Edited 5271d ago )

Socom isn't a fair comparison. The series has always been one of the best online games, arguably the best on consoles (prior to Confrontation, which is still up there). The bad reviews certainly hurt, but those were before the fixes were released for bugs affecting the game at launch.

Final Fantasy on the other hand does not have a history of consistency. Granted people are arguing here over nothing, but Square does not have a good track record, in fact it has been pretty poor these last few years.

Eamon5271d ago

Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy X

The MAIN reason why I LOVED each of these is because of the oldschool turnbased/atb command system.
Most people these days, who haven't played the old comman based system, would prefer action-orientated RPGs. I liked FF7-9-10 because of it's command based system. I didn't enjoy battles in Final Fantasy XII because while it was turn based, it was open and free.

In FF12, the gambits system was terrible because I did not want to concentrate on just ONE member of party during battle at a time. I hope this issue is fixed in FF13.

coolfool5271d ago (Edited 5271d ago )

You know, it would be nice to see FFVIII get some more love. Quite a few seem to not like it although I'm not sure why. It's story was rich and full, the music was epic and going back to my/others point above, the character development was amazing. Squall went from being a rude loner who only cared about himself to someone who new what love and responsibilities meant and willing to risk all for them. I guess that description doesn't really sound very epic for a game but the way it played out was brilliant.

Tony240ZT5271d ago

I played FF XII all on my 42", but with my PS3 with the upscaling. It takes out some of the jaggies which is a great way to play. The game makes great use of surround sound, too.
If your ps3 doesn't have backwards compatibility definitely use component video cables with the PS2, any input over composite to your HD tv will look bad.

Lightsaber5271d ago

I cant believe that people b!tch cause a game got a 39/40. Jesus serious get a life. I only look at reviews to see if a game is good or not. 8-10 is a good game. If it gets 7's are iffy on if I might like it and anything that gets below a 7 normally sucks

Mikeyy5271d ago

Also set it to 16:9 widescreen mode it looks much more natural, instead of "Fat and Distorted".

I play FF12 on my PS3 using HDMI in 1080P mode.

The older FF games are legend!

alaa5271d ago

But I hope it would be as good as FFX.

hardcore19125271d ago

Hope this one to be as good as the best ones in the series.

ZBlacktt5271d ago

Note how the same guy rated the game next to FFXIII one point lower there as well? Watch, next week this guy will be laid off, lol.

The Killer5271d ago

however when they give 40/40 for a game like beyonita or what ever that action game called their credibility really is questioned.

i dont and neither you who is reading me now should care much about famitsu scores!!

user39158005271d ago

No doubt that it will be another repeat me title, but I will buy it on the best platform the 360, and continue to play blu ray movies on the garbage station 3. So, what I have 2 of them and to be honest they are not worth a $100.00, but I can afford it lol......... and you suck.

GrandDragon5271d ago

From what I have heard Bayonetta is a really good game with amazing fighting mechanics that have improved from DMC

toaster5271d ago

XII was my least favorite.

Jerk1205270d ago

Just because it was your ''least favourite'' doesn't mean that it wasn't good.

The 7 Best Final Fantasy Characters: Unveiling the Legends

While FFVII ranks highly, there's more to the series than one game. Here's Chit Hot's picks for the seven best Final Fantasy characters.

220°

The older it gets, the more I respect Final Fantasy XIII

Alex Donaldson: "Hindsight is a hell of a thing, however, and in the years since Final Fantasy XIII, my respect for the decisions its developers made has skyrocketed. In the two Final Fantasy titles since we see both the brilliance and the folly in alternative approaches - and in Final Fantasy VII Remake, we get a more nuanced understanding of what FF13 was trying to accomplish from many of the same development leads."

Einhander1972145d ago

FFXIII is actually one of the best Final Fantasy games.

I also sort of was disappointed at the time, never as much as the bandwagon. But really all the fantastic 3D rendered cutscenes and I actually liked the characters and the story though convoluted was actually fantastic and the ending was extremely emotional. So much budget and time were put into that game Square had such big plans, I actually have always felt kind of bad for how things played out.

I have been thinking for years how great it would be to get all three games on one disk for PS4 or 5.

Nyxus145d ago

I always liked this game, and I agree, a rerelease for current gen would be nice.

Shane Kim144d ago (Edited 144d ago )

Gotta take off the nostalgia glasses. It's the worst FF. Shiva as a bike, I mean come on.

Elda144d ago

Shiva as a bike is strange but saying FFXIII is the worst FF is not at all a fact, that's simply your opinion.

Terry_B143d ago

*One of the 3 equally bad FF's

DivineHand125143d ago (Edited 143d ago )

When I got my series X a year ago, I bought FF13 for nostalgia reasons but ended up being disappointed. When I first played it around the time it launched, I didn't have a lot of experience with final fantasy games, so I enjoyed it. Fast forward to when I played it again, I found that the game had many unnecessary filler moments instead of just giving us meaningful content.

The game is also very linear and a quote on the article said it best. "It is like a sewage pipe that leads to the ocean until it opens up on Grand Pulse."

The story didn't make much sense either and I believe it is my mistake as I played the FF7 remake on PS5 prior which is a night and day difference in terms of pacing, storytelling and likeable characters even though cloud is aloof.

FinalFantasyFanatic143d ago (Edited 143d ago )

Probably was a mistake to play any of the golden era FFs first (e.g. FF6 through FF10), it makes it harder to enjoy some of the FFs that aren't as good. I think FF12 was where major issues with the series started becoming apparent, and it just got worse from there.

FinalFantasyFanatic143d ago (Edited 143d ago )

I didn't really care for it that much, the only saving grace was that it had a better story than 15 (overall it was better than 15) and possibly 12, and even then, you had to read some of it through primers, like reading a book. Plus the battle system was reasonably fun for what it was, even if it was more the spectacle that was exciting for me (e.g. summoning). And to be fair, the 13 trilogy got better with every games, I still don't like Snow though.

Gamingsince1981143d ago

Ff13 is only good if you haven't played a ff before, or any other games that are decent for that matter.

-Foxtrot143d ago

It is in fact no way the best Final Fantasy game, it's one of the worst

Linear corridors, Cutscene, Fight, Cutscene...rinse and repeat

Dialogue and characters are pretty bad, especially Lightning as the main FF hero, they literally said they tried to make a "Female Cloud" and they failed.

Story was pretty awful

I could go on

I think the only alright thing that came from the game was the music.

Elda143d ago

That's not a fact that's your personal opinion. The game sold 11 million copies between its 2009 release up until 2014 including critically reviewed as an 8 out of 10 or an 80 out of 100. The game does have some issues but it's not at all a fact as one of the worst FF games.

-Foxtrot143d ago

Elda

Not just mine mate

A large majority

So….

Traecy142d ago

N4G commenters such as yourself aren't the majority. The game was well received.

i liked the game alot but i didnt like how they handled the terminology.

i dont mind reading data logs but it had soo many.

but i always loved the music and how it looked. the battle system wasnt too bad either.

but i like 13-2 more :)

i still dont understand why we never got a remaster of the trilogy

Eonjay143d ago

Xbox kinda did. Besides the video files of course which are still best on PS3 due to bluray.

Snookies12145d ago

XIII is a pretty solid game, but XIII-2 is WAY better. XIII-2 was one of the few games I decided to go for a Platinum trophy in, early on. Had so much fun the entire way through getting it too!

Eonjay143d ago

Totally agree. FF 13 was okay but 13-2 is my favorite FF game ever.

shinoff2183145d ago (Edited 145d ago )

I hated this to when it released. I haven't much liked a ff game since ff10 as much , aside from ff7remake. I decided to give it another shot on my series x since it's not on a current ps and was liking it quite a bit(just takes me some time to get over things ) until star ocean 2 remake came out I was all over that.

Square should definitely remaster it or something for ps4 ps5

KillerB144d ago

my favorite jrpg trilogy ever
