Heavy Rain Developer Believes Game Can Still Sell Despite Packed Release Window

PlayStation LifeStyle Writes:
In July it was announced that the highly anticipated Heavy Rain would be delayed past Christmas into the next year, as "it's not ideal to release a new IP or a new genre just before Christmas". Guillaume de Fondaumiere stated that "it's a very crowded place to be, and certain games need more space to live their life." However, since the delay numerous games, such as MAG, Bioshock 2 and Alpha Protocol, would all be releasing in early 2010. At this year's Eurogamer Expo in London PlayStation LifeStyle asked David Cage, Quantic Dream's CEO, and writer and director of Heavy Rain, about his views on the packed release window.

2010 - The year of the games that were too chicken to release alongside Modern Warfare 2

doctorstrange5318d ago

It does seem MW2 scared away most of the competition, only a few games like AC2 are left to try and fight for our wallets

Hellsvacancy5318d ago

Fu<k MW2 im sick of hearin about it its Heavy Rain i want

ps3gamerkyle5318d ago

I do agree with that statement.

doctorstrange5318d ago

And this year was far from bad
/hugs Uncharted 2

godzilla2125318d ago

Uncharted was such a great game

doctorstrange5318d ago

One of the best games of all time

He gets disagrees, but its true. After last year with so many games lost under the pile of big releases noones going to try and go up against an even bigger release like MW2. They just wont sell.

TheAntiFanboy5318d ago

It'd still sell regardless of MW2's existence. The legions and legions of Sony fanboys would gobble it up over a multiplatform game.

"2010 - The year of the games that were too chicken to release alongside Modern Warfare 2"

Think about your own post man, they don't make games for the fun of try to compete with a super-seller game like MW2, they need money you know...

Cage you already have my money, I'll always support new and innovative games, more if are mature games like this

GAMERS FTW!!!

doctorstrange5318d ago

The game really deserves to sell a lot, from what I've seen and played of it

Teddybee5318d ago

As long as Sony advertises

doctorstrange5318d ago

Sony has really started to promote their games, so it should be sufficiently advertised

Jsynn75318d ago

The should market this game like a movie. Make people believe it's coming out in theaters (sorta like viral). Not only would it draw the hardcore/casual gaming crowd, it may just draw in Joe movie watcher. Adding that demographic to the mix would definitely lift game (and possibly system) sales. Sony's doing an awesome job with advertising games now. I just hope they keep going with it in the future. Give every Sony exclusive the "Halo" treatment.

DeejayTai5318d ago

I try my hand at many different styles of games, tried 1st person shoothers, thought they sucked, I'm very interested in Heavy Rain and will definitely be buying it when it drops. Will it be any good is a different question...

sikbeta5318d ago

I really want this game to sell really well, I always will support games like this

INNOVATIVE Games FTW!!!

T3mpr1x5318d ago

I think it'll do fine. Hopefully well enough to warrant a sequel/more games in the genre!

doctorstrange5318d ago

in the full interview Cage mentions how he believes that if the game sells well it is very likely that it will inspire similar games

Teddybee5318d ago

More games like this would be very welcome

Sev5318d ago

I just wish they'd release it already. 2 E3's past with me drooling over the game, and I still don't have it. :'(

doctorstrange5318d ago

I'd go mad if they ever delayed it again

ftwrthtx5318d ago

I will definitely be owning this game

doctorstrange5318d ago

The game looks truly awesome, and when I played it, it was truly amazing

Teddybee5318d ago

definitely one of the best games coming next year

godzilla2125318d ago

but Bioshock will be my best game next year, I think

doctorstrange5318d ago

But to me, Heavy Rain looks better

godzilla2125318d ago

so 2 will be even better, whereas Heavy Rain is unproven

Teddybee5318d ago

Cage did make the awesome Farenheit game

Please stop comparing video games to movies

"Many video games catch not only great commercial attention but remarkable critical attention as well. We have seen games like Heavy Rain, The Last of Us Part II, and even entries in the Metal Gear series described as fantastic interactive experiences, even heralded in the same way as Hollywood's greatest films.

I would suggest that not only is this an unfair comparison but also a harmful one. Video games, by their very nature, are an intricately different medium and should be weighed against one another rather than another form of media," Phillip writes for GF365.

Yes, please stop. They're better than most hollywood drivel nowadays.

BLAKHOODe1287d ago

I think Hollywood films will becoming increasingly more like video games in the future, especially as the world embraces the "new normal" from the pandemic. It makes sense, as games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales showcase just how realistically we're reaching in graphical capabilities, as well as showcase extreme action sequences in spectacular ways. And as time goes by, it'll get easier and cheaper to produce such "art", as well as create new star "actors" that never age, never die, never complain, never gets involved in scandals, etc. Technology is amazing and we're only just getting a taste of what it'll eventually be.

sourOG1287d ago

No. Some games are like movies.

medman1287d ago (Edited 1287d ago )

No. For the money spent, a quality game provides far more entertainment value than a quality movie. Especially when looking at what is going on in the world, and how a studio can attempt to pilfer from consumers by charging 30 dollars for Mulan via streaming. Ridiculous. There is no comparison....games all day.

Have you played Detroit? While it’s my personal favorite, I fully understand many preferring Heavy Rain more. I’m glad you enjoyed Heavy Rain too.

bouzebbal1444d ago

def. one of my top 3 best experiences on PS3

ClayRules20121444d ago

bouzebbal

That’s awesome to hear! What’re the other 2 best experiences?

akaFullMetal1445d ago

Great game, need to get started on Detroit soon.

ClayRules20121445d ago

Glad you enjoyed the game! Yes, Detroit is a masterpiece of a game, and their best work to date “in my opinion”

ClayRules20121445d ago

Wow, 10 years...and yet, still one of the best/most emotional/thrilling gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

So grateful to Sony for believing in Quantic Dream’s vision for this game, and giving them a chance. I’ll never forget David Cage saying “We want to challenge the player, but not with the controller, but mentally, with their decisions of “How far would you go to save someone you love” Well, they broke my emotional gamer heart lol.

My teenage son refuses to play this game, because I’ve told him in little detail the emotional impact it had on me all those years ago. Maybe one day he will.

Still have my origami crane they teach you how to make when you're installing for the first time.

C-H-E-F1444d ago

it's been 10 years? wow, that was so fast, I feel like this console gen went fast as well although it hasn't. I really look forward to the PS5 this holiday season though.
