PSN Hits 1.5 Million Users

After a mere 6 months, Sony has created a very real online presence.

Straight from Gamer's Day, PSU got the numbers of Sony's online world. First off, over 1.5 million users have created online accounts, with 775,000 coming from North America (PSU doesn't know if these are individual PS3s, as some people have multiple accounts for differing regions).

At this 6 month mark, Microsoft had only 500,000 users on Xbox Live. For those of you who think that's not a fair comparison, the 500,000 number also includes the free silver edition.

Six million pieces of content have been downloaded from the PlayStation Store. They didn't announce the ratio of free to paid content, but it's an impressive number nonetheless.

Finally, the 1.5 million users have logged in a total of 115 million times. So using our impressive math and reasoning skills, that's an average of 77 log-ins per PS3 owner. Not bad at all Sony.

As much as Sony has improved in their online services from the PS2 era, they are many years behind Xbox Live. On a side note, Nintendo is even further behind than Sony. Microsoft started their online service at least four years ahead of Sony, and, in ALMOST any situation where one company has a head start over another for that many years, will be far more advanced in the online services. There will definitely be a gap when comparing Xbox Live and PSN.

Sure, the PSN is free, and will have HOME. BUT, HOME is a love/hate feature that will not be used by everyone often (such as me, since I hate Sony's decision to go for a bland, generic and realistic look for user avatars in HOME). Furthermore, right now, Sony's download speeds from PS Store SUCK (and this could be because it's free and Sony can't afford to provide fast download speeds like the super-rich Microsoft). This is the "price" PS3 users will pay for Sony's decision to make online free.

With Microsoft's Xbox Live, you must pay this if you want to play online multiplayer games, etc. However, their download speeds are ridiculous fast. Downloading demos take as low as 15 minutes (if you're internet connection is really good), while PS Store demos take me 1-4 hours (and I have a VERY fast internet connection, but PS Store apparently has a download limit D:).

Any gamer who owns or played on the 360, PS3 and Wii will tell you that the 360 online service is superior. The downside is that you must pay for it, unlike PS3 and Wii, and Sony is definitely improving their online services at a dramatic rate (which is great).

Perhaps when PS4 comes, will we see Sony's online network rival Microsoft's (and surpass it if it remains FREE while MS decides to go with subscription fees next gen).

Regardless of which will ultimately be better, the good news is that both consoles are constantly improving their online services, and the gamers are in a win-win situation! Cheers!

log on to user
scroll to network
select psn store
sign in (setup details address, accounts etc)
and then you have logged on to the network

XBL has PAID SUSCRIBERS of over 6 million, and about 3 million of those joined after the 360 launched. The reason the Silver has such low numbers, is because IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GAMING ; it's the equivalent to buying the 360 Core. My point is, more people are happy to pay a meager $50/year for a superior service, than bother with a crippled one that's FREE.

but there was no silver account when xbox live was being started up. They're using the original xbox live starting platform (which you had to pay for and it did start slowly).

These numbers aren't comparable, free to payable. They have no data to support it. Just because they say it includes silver accounts, it doesn't matter because it had no subscribers at that point.

You have to realize that there is a pretty decently-sized population of people who don't care about online play what-so-ever. I won't say that I'm one of them, but I'm definitely not a big fan of it; the only game I've really enjoyed playing online is Calling all Cars and Resistance (when people aren't acting like idiots). For many people, it's all about the single-player experience.

If I look back at my PS2 games (34) I only bothered going online with 2. Some may chalk this up to inferior service or something, but it was mostly because I didn't like it. Most of the games (19) are story-driven action adventure, and don't even have an offline multiplayer, let alone online.

I'm fairly certain that my views of online aren't the norm, but I'm sure there are plenty of people like me out there. The "free" does make the cost of trying it out well worth it though. Fight Night, Motorstorm and NBA Street I don't bother playing online, because I really don't enjoy/have fun doing so. I'm just weird that way, I guess.

I'm guessing that most of the people that think online's the end-all, be-all of gaming probably have LIVE by now. When I get a game, I never flip it over to see if it supports online play, because it's not too important to me.

There'd be no PSN if it weren't for XBL showing us just how LAME PS2s online was. What's really the major difference between the two? Multiplayer service is no different - some games support voice/some don't...nothing unified. PS2 was supposed to have a web browser & a music/movie store 5 years ago!!! XBL has one...NOW. That's why the comparison. Sony obviously is hard to learn and slow to move.

The free service isn't making people flock to PS3 - heck, most PS3 owners aren't flocking to use it, so I say they do what's necessary to further refine and improve the service on a comparible level to XBL which is...charge a fee! <gasp--I said it!>

Yes that was one reason that Xbox Live wasn't picked up so fast at first. Noone really knew about it and to drop 50$/year on it would've hurt the service more then helped. Now that people know that Xbox Live is a superior service that offers many features it was able to take off when Xbox 360 launched.

Xbox Live also helped PSN get attention as people were able to see the success of an online gaming experience through Xbox Live.

Now you bring up a bunch of stupid s#it.

1)Xbox 360 supports true 1080p over Component, VGA, and HDMI.
2)Xbox 360 is HD-Ready out of box however PS3 is not since it doesn't come with HD cables.
3)Xbox 360 wasn't rushed it launched when it needed to launch and because of that gained a year advantage on both Nintendo and Sony. Even with that extra year Sony wasn't even able to match the Xbox 360 is games or online experience.
4)Xbox Live is definitely worth 50$ more then PSN.
5)The Elite was created for HD Media guys(although I don't even have one and I still download HD TV Shows and Movies w/o a problem) BTW the PS3's advantage of having HDMI 1.3 was already shown to not even be real. The PS3's HDMI is crippled compared to other HDMI 1.3 devices.

BTW I don't own a HD-DVD player.

Some of the things your saying are inaccurate...

The fact the your recieving an image on Component cable, means it's not TRUE 1080p, it's lesser image, and it's not digital.

Why it's not digital? Cause X-box 360 GFX doesn't support a digital signal, it's all anolog.

Not sure how it works on HD-DVD end, but I beleive it's digital, as long as you have the HDMI version (Elite).

Also I'd say the machine X-box 360 itself was rushed, as we all know it has had a higher rate of failure than what is common. So somewhere they rushed the designing of the board.

If x-360 elite was designed my media/AV guys, they'd never allow the subpar and LOUD DVD player to be the standard included. AS well they'd have 10 cent rubbers, to protect the discs, from scratching like a mofo.

i will give you a reason why psn wont ever beat live... well its like this those who are gay will go to the psn network.. those who are straight will go with live instead!! now 1.5 million gays out there logging on to psn network. i doubt it has that many signing on i would be shocked with our world today. probably someone in the sony network paying someone off to make it look it, alot of it is probably alot of sony friends and family employess from all over...use common sense!!
