Halo 3 ODST sells 2 million in 24 hours

Halo 3: OSDT launched yesterday, 22nd September 2009 in most major markets but Japan. Sales expectations for the title were mixed - on one hand it is a Halo title, but at the same time ODST has seen a fair amount of criticism for being charged at full price for what many believe is more of an expansion than a full game. With a critic review average of 8.7 and many reviewers commenting that ODST is indeed worthy of the price tag of a full game, did the sales live up to that of a Halo game?

To think that they SUDDENLY are being paid off for positive reviews is ridiculous because it goes against a code of ethics that permeates every company that seeks to impress upon people an informed opinion.

IDK if ANYONE on N4G thought it would sell anything less than a stellar amount of copies did they? Even the biggest Halo hating PS3 fanboy would know a Halo FPS game on 360 is going to sell like crazy, wouldn't they?

I'm not so sure that at $60 the content is that good value myself but most Halo fans are going to find out for themselves as they'll all , rightly, say the franchise has never let them down. Allied to this is the fact that there really hasn't been a great deal to play exclusively on the 360 of late and you've ensured a massive seller.

Also, even if the game had been awful(whichit clearly isn't)it would probably be the Halo after it that would suffer because of it, no? Halo hasn't had a real duffer in the series and as people know this they'll trust Bungie to produce again until they personally have bought one that disappoints(which, for me, is why I didn't preorder ODST having felt a little let down by the SP on Halo3). Most people still loved Halo3, however, which for me at least meant that ODST was always safe in sales terms-if it sucked really bad it would effect Reach sales perhaps but not it's own initial sales.

I doubt it will reach the amount H3 sold but it'll end up at 5million plus with no problems. If people don't find it great value, though, it might mean Reach sells more slowly-but even then I doubt it as that will have the full power of MS ad dept behind it!

I don't believe we're being asked to be surprised a Halo FPS has sold well on 360! With a universally loved back catalog why wouldn't this one do well too? Remember, those of us that read the game press are a tiny minority and most people just buy games n their names and their past experiences with the franchise-which is why new IP find life so hard these days at times-it's a kmown name and TV ad campaigns that sell games rather than what LoT or even IGN might say.

I'm just very surprised that anyone actually thought a "controversy" that 90% of Halo fans won't even know, much less care, about might effect the sales of ODST by a great amount, I really am.

You know, I don't think gamers care about exclusives. Great games are great games. I think the only ones who care about exclusives are PS3 fanboys online because even at retail PS3 exclusives underwhelm. Regardless about what you think about the XBox 360 or it's exclusives, the gamers speak volumes by purchasing software. XBox 360 games are consistently some of the best selling games outsold only by Wii software. So while fanboys complain, they don't buy games because Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, Uncharted, Infamous could all have the same successes if anybody but fanboys cared as enthusiastically.

You seem happy about this. If I am being totally honest I am concerned about it. MS is showing the industry something alright (just like many other publishers and devs already have) but I'm not sure it's a good thing.

This generation is all about milking every last cent imaginable out of us gamers (add ons and DLC) and bumping this game up an additional $20 or so dollars at E3 ensured me that draining us dry is here to stay. The sales of ODST, which I knew were going to be insane, just dotted the I's and Crossed the T's.

I can't be the only one that thinks DLC, expansion packs and add on pricing is starting to get out of control. Horse armor, buy costumes already on the disc, paying full price for an expansion pack?

The only DLC that comes to mind that was worth the price, I'm sure you guys could point out others and also many of you think ODST is worth full price, is GTA IV Lost & Damned.

I just can't help but picture people "like" Bobby Kotick laughing their asses off in their offices at the lengths ($, standing in line, preordering, etc) gamers are willing to go to get their favorite games and all the additional content they can get their hands on.

it sold because it has the name halo on it or possibly it really is a good game. Like going to a restaurant. You know the name but have not tried anything else on the menu because you seem to like the same thing every time you go. Nothing really wrong with that but you should actually try something new once in a while. Could be good or bad but you wont know till you try it.

Turns out odst is a really good game. Those affraid to order a different meal will forever be stuck in the same ol same ol. I am glad I ordered this one because it is very different in many ways. I especially like the crossed storylines of the various characters. A nice noir feel to it. I think MS should have dropped the "3" from the name and just left it halo: odst because it is far from being anything related to the events of #3. Maybe they kept it because of the bonus disc with the H3 maps.

It is challenging without being overly difficult to get back on track. Especially when you run out of ammo and have to rely more on the covenant weapons. No radar, regenerating shields and no backup. You have to unlearn what you have learned and that is a fresh twist on this game.

It is definately a game for the fans of the story. Those who complain seem to be ones with no real interest in the series what so ever. Go away haters and let the gamers have their fun.

You know, from the lists that you just gave there, i actually do have more fun playing those 360 titles than i do the PS3 titles.

KZ2 - Terrible single player campaign.
LBP - Innovative, but i bought it to try and get me girlfriend into gaming....didn't work. maybe my first born child will like it.
Demonsouls - ya i actually am interrested in this game.
Uncharted 2 - hated the first one, passing on the second, i grew out of Tomb Raider a long time ago.
katamari 4 ever - Not my kind of game
MLB09 - Great baseball game, but its still baseball, 2K makes a great baseball game too.
R&C - Not into cartoon games.
Fat princess - Not bad, but i would still rather play Shadow complex or Trials HD (since we are mentioning arcade games)

forza 3 - Best Racing sim on any console, I will devote much of my time on this game.
Halo wars - i love this game and play it very often.
Ninja Blade - Basically the same as NG and i don't like either of those games
Halo ODST - Awesome game with a great addition to the story, on my second playthrough on Legendary
l4d2 - 1st one was a cult hit and won awards, no reason the second won't be just as fun
Section 8 - SUCKS!!!! Mainly for online since the single player is less than 4 hours.

Funny thing is, the same thing happened to me. I made a comment about how the PS3 40GB is not a true 40GB because after the OS finishes installing all the necessary files, you're stuck with 31GB. I also mentioned that b/c it installs every game, I had to delete files just PLAY a new game. I said PLAY, not SAVE...delete files to PLAY a brand new game. Then that new game installs in it's place. How retarded is that? I also asked PS3 fanboys why can't I have free trials on arcade games before purchasing and I got knocked down to 1 bubble from 4 bubbles. I tried KZ2 online once. and here's what a pc gamer thinks about it.

The controls BLOW hard. I don't care who you are that sh*t is NOT realism. That is bluetooth lag. It's the very same lag I felt when I used a bluetooth mouse in cs. a $100 mouse was tossed aside in 2 hours because it was exactly like kz2.

However even though you guys should not be forced to play that way. It's not hard to get used to and so in my very first online pub I went 16-14 with about 4-5 headshots. I was expecting to be dominated because I have NEVER used a controller to play an fps game online.

We all know the drill. Exclusives are the only thing that matter in the gaming world. Nobody is buying Madden, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, NBA 2K, etc. All that matters are Sony's army of exclusives that most PS3 owners seem more likely to toot a horn over instead of actually buying.

I think most people buying games are not like people who frequent N4G. They don't spend all day reading reviews and watching trailers. Most people walk in to Best Buy and tell the clerk "Hey this guy at work/school said new Halo is out, is it any good and can you help me find it."

Halo is a household name. If you ask a non-gamer to name one game (Besides Mario) I bet it would be Halo. It was featured in the movies, TV shows, even my local clothing stores have Halo shirts and underwear. I guarantee you, if they took a Halo game, named it something else and changed Master Chief to Mister Chef, the game would lose 50-75% of sales.

Halo and CoD/MW will sell well FOREVER. Look at Mario and Zelda.

kirby I didnt buy it but..... There is no other game with the multiplayer features of halo. It offers up to 4 player split-screen online in the form of co-op, matchmaking(deathmatch), and firefight. Most people dont understand how big a feature taht is. Its pretty cool to be able to play online with friends on one console. Most online games like COD 4 force you to take turns to play online, with halo, 4 people can play online at the same time(it only requires 1 live account). I honestly think alot of people dont know about this, or maybe they dont have any friends so they dont place a value on it. Its something that even a PC FPS cant do, and tahts impressive when a console FPS can do something a PC one cant(besides analogue movement). This is a feature taht pretty much no games hasve, especially no game with the appeal of halo.

Two: People want more Halo, and aren't too upset about paying 60 bucks for it.

@ above, i know it is your opinion but... this is the same as bethesda releasing the game of the year edition with all of the DLC on one disc, but they still sell it for the same price as the original game. it again is the same with fallout 3 having £50 worth of DLC added on top of the original game price which is £90, but they sell it for £40, fallout is better in terms of gameplay than halo, sure it is partly broken in some areas but it makes up for it by having that charm of a huge open world, and partly loveable characters.

My thing is this: ODST isn't a ripoff to me because besides the orginal halo 3 maps (not the map packs), everything else is new to me, and seems okay for the price tag.

Now, that doesn't mean that I think its a great value, especially for the Halo faithful. In cases like this, there should be more options to buy. If someone already has all of the map packs, they shouldn't have to buy them again just to play the other things that ODST has to offer. The idea to package all of this together was good in theory, but a large majority of the fanbase probably already had a good third of the content that its selling.

I think the 85 is about spot on. Its not the greatest game I've played but its far from the worst. I love the fact you don't now have regenerating shields as it made halo too easy. And firfight is a blast. Very much a rip of horde mode. But so what? It works

ODST is a good game. I have made it a quarter of the way through the campaign and have played at least 5 hours of firefight. The campaign is new and exciting, and firefight is really fun. I was skeptical of the good reviews, but the game does deliver. It was worth the $60 to me.

MAN, I BOUGHT A 360 ELITE (NEED A SHOOTER SYSTEM WITH MY PS3). I rented the critically acclaimed Halo 3 and it was pretty good (I LOVED Halo: Combat Evolved, but did not like Halo 2.), so I bought Halo: ODST. I am a PS3 fan, and ABSOLUTELY LOVE ODST!!

I like how this games feels...something like a movie/graphic novel, and it is as personal as the first (AND ONE OF THE GREATEST FPS ON A COUNSEL!), and I love the visuals. This game is great and deserves the price...although I see the frustration with the Halo 3 map thing. Personally, I would like to have seen more of a "greatest hits" deal, where Bungie would have taken the best of ALL three Halo maps, and put those in the game. (This way, the whole package is a new and unique experience.) THE STORY AND MUSICAL SCORE ARE EXCELLENT....I'M A PS3 HEAD, AND I'M NOT HATIN.

Sony is 100% to blame for Killzone 2 not moving these kinds of numbers. They marketed it like sh!t. Halo is popular because people bought it, liked it, told their friends how fun it is, they bought and so on. Sony doesn't reach out to their audience as much as it should. Great games come and go and while they sell well, they don't have a single exclusive that can touch Halo in terms of popularity and sales. Which sucks because Killzone is a great game.

I'm hoping Uncharted 2 moves at least like MGS 4. That series deserves this kind of attention.

I have been saying this on N4G.com all along. In fact I even said ODST sales would be close to two millon out of the chute. This is despite all of the negative press attempts (fake f-boy reviews etc.)
Even VG charts is so scared of the f-boy backlash that they try to compare Halo 3 records numbers to somehow show that ODST isn't doing as well. How about comparing the game to ANY other game releases in the last 9 months of 2009.

I just finished the campaign for the first time today and make absolutely no mistake, ODST is worth every penny. The campaign is an absolute blast, enhancing upon almost every aspect we knew about Halo 3. Bungie deserves all of the highest accolades for blessing the fans with this instant classic.

Anybody using the silly F-boy DLC overpriced line will from here on get laughed at. The length and replayability are equal or beyond every retail FPS released thus far in 2009.

The huge difference is that NO OTHER FPS without 'Call of Duty' in it's title is as close to being more relevant in 2009.

Let it be known that earlier this year we were told that Killzone 2 would be the 'Halo 3' killer. But as it turns out Killzone 2 is not even the 'Halo: OSDT' killer.

Let all of the PS3 games get the fake N4G.com hype, the arbitrary '10's, the 'awards'

Halo games get the quality of gameplay and the love of its fans, who like myself showed up midnight to be the first to play this gem.

My congrats and thanks go to Bungie yet again. I played about 1.5-2 hrs of the campaign so far, and it is brilliant. The music alone makes this game awesome! Played some firefight with some friends and literally laughed my ass off all night headshotting grunts with the confetti turned on.

2 million in one day...wow. I wonder what it will do for the entire week? Surprisingly, a good number of my friends had no idea it dropped yesterday, so I expect the whole week to blow up.

I bet anyone here that doesn't like Killzone played on the Auto Lock on servers when Starwars Battle Front 1 & 2 was the game to Play on xbox and PS2.

Killone is as hardcore as you can get. It not an easy game so if you are too lazy to learn how to aim or you just plain suck then stick to Halo & COD.

There is a reason why Halo and COd sold more then K2.

that's stellar! i've never liked halo (aside from the one time i played at a friends house... rockets and swords... that was fun... ) but i have to admit it has an insane fan base... if ps3 exclusives had better sales, i think we would get better games, development-wise at least... i was so disappointed when i played killzone... sure, the graphics were unparalleled but it was mostly shades of grey anyways, but the gameplay (especially online) was so disappointing... oh well. atleast cod6 is coming out soon :D

Every poor review given denotes that it's a bad game because it's too expensive, and more or less an expansion.

Every good review seems to be ignoring that fact, and just gauging it based as a stand alone game.

I really have no idea what to think. To me, it seems like such an odd title. It's definitely a quality game, I wouldn't expect any less from a Bungie title. But at the same time, I'm not comfortable with the fact that it does feel the big MS is just milking the cash cow.

Regardless, everybody knows it will sell phenomenally. They defintely played the right cards releasing this one.

I just hope there's no Halo 4 side expansion shortly after Halo Reach launch, with a beta invite that'll drive sales to Halo 5. Good God.

I got ODST yesterday. Played it and I like the funny sounds of voices (especially when I'm about to die, the guy makes sweaty tiring noises). As of now, I'm at part 2 of playing The Rookie. I can't play the multiplayer yet because I'm still a silver member. Is it good than Halo 3 multiplayer?

It's doesn't matter what ANY reviewer says. Halo is tried and true and people buy it for a reason. They know what they are getting, a great game with great multi-player. This game isn't the shovelware you see on the Weeeeee or the POS3 (piece of Sh 3). Kz2 for all the great reviews and honors why has it's sales sucked arse in comparison to 360 AAA titles?

No offense but this is really foolish. DLC is the wave of the future. It increases the profitability for the companies by reducing distribution cost. I personally love having a tangible piece of media I can go buy, unwrap, and put on my shelf. I don't want everything to be DLC but that is where things are headed in the future. Not the other way around. I wish they would keep the same distribution model but they won't.

You wait. In ten years or less you won't even have the option of buying the latest game on any type of pre-packaged media. You want Halo 6, you'll be buying it via electronic distribution or not at all. You won't be strolling into Best Buy and picking up the media.

Personally, I feel comfortable buying game add-on DLCs with my MS points, but it took me a long time to get over the hurdle. I like a tangilbe media. At this point I still don't buy downloadable movies, music, or books. I prefer to have the CD, DVD, or Bluray. I prefer to have a physical book. I think most people in the over 25 generations feel the same as I do. Maybe growing up now it is no big deal. You want a song, you just buy the song on itunes. So you never really have that album with the art and the booklet to look at. You have no collection to show off to your friends. It is all digital. I don't like that.

This isn't to say I don't use things such as digital music. The first thing I do when I buy a CD is rip it to high bitrate .mp3 files and load it on my (non-ipod) MP3 player.

So back on my point. Saying that they are headed this way with "expansion packs" and kissing the days of DLC goodbye is foolish. It isn't happening like that at all.

The reason why so many copies were sold is because that's all xbox owners have at the moment(fps-wise because they love em), i mean just look at the choices we have we have unchated 2, demon souls, ninja gaiden and thats just a few, playstation users often have a wide-spread appreciation of games which is not just limited to fps games, which is why most playstation exclusives don't sell 2 million in one day

This is how strong franchising is, regardless the quality of the actual game.

Don't get me wrong, what's there is of Halo 3 quality, the only problem is that it's just that - Halo 3. Although even i must admit that it's nice to see some change (even if it is very little), like the scenery.

I know taste is individual and hey - If you like Halo then by all means go pick this up. But don't sit there and say that it's anything really new about it, spare yourself the embarrassment and the rest of us the whole "point and laughing"-thing.

I preordered uncharted 2 and saw a halo 3: odst midnight release and asked the guy if they were expecting these numbers for uncharted and he just laughed and said you never see these numbers for a ps3 game. perhaps thats just in my part of town, and I'm sure in japan its different, but japan is a small fraction of the gaming world. Perhaps that is sonys problem, they need to look past their own front door. hell I could be wrong, just a thought.

I think the real issue here is marketing. The product has to back up what the marketing hype is pushing.

But in successive years marketing will be needed but the product can be expected to not be "fresh". But marketing needs to be vast and invasive.

Without Halo's marketing it would've just been another really good game. If Sony had the coin to compete at that level of advertising - or was willing to spend the many millions needed, Sony would be able to stand with Halo.

But two different companies having to different ideas on their business, will tend to look differently to the consumer.

I see Sony as a marathon runner and MS as a sprinter....watching the Olympics - Sprints are exciting to watch and require less commitment than watching a 2hr enduro race. But, once your hooked on the marathon, you'll tend to develop a stronger interest as the race progresses.
