EuroGamer Halo ODST review

Horribly, it's that price tag that ultimately does for Halo 3: ODST. This is a marvellous campaign, and its clever pacing, shifting focus and expert storytelling all heave effortlessly under cover of wisdom inherited from the phenomenal Halo 3. Our fear had been that the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers would struggle to escape the Master Chief's shadow, but the developer's improving craft means they have no difficulty doing so over a short distance. Instead, it's the shadow cast by Halo 3 itself, and its contemporaries then and since, that proves slightly too long and broad for Bungie's valiant efforts of the past 18 months to escape, because no matter the quality of what's on offer, they can't reasonably make the same demand of your wallet, and yet they still do. It's all the more disappointing, because as a roadmap to the future of Halo, if not the future of Bungie, Halo 3: ODST is fantastic.

Not even the known xbox biased sites are giving high scores. Ouch.

SnuggleBandit5362d ago

wait....this is eurogamer right???????????

JokesOnYou5362d ago

If price is their biggest gripe, that's fine...but I paid full price for worst games, so at least I know by the time I put ODST down I will definitely got my moneys worth...Ill probably pull an all nighter the first night and go to work tired as hell...aawww Bungie not again, how about a Fri release next time. Lol

Eurogamer understands what some of us have been trying to get across for a while now. The game just shouldn't have the scores a full fledged title receives at $60 when it's content is incomparable to what you get with other games at $60 that have high review scores.
Our major fault was that we kept comparing this to Uncharted 2 and so it caused another stir in the PS3 and 360 community. EuroGamer has compared it to Halo 3 itself and even though that title is dated it's a better comparison as 360 enthusiast can't argue the logic in that.

What you got in Halo 3 for $60 and what you get in Halo:ODST for $60 should have affect on its review score. Had this game remained a $40-$30 expansion it would cause less uproar in the PS3 community when it gets scores in the 9&^/10 range.

And xbox360 fans were going crazy saying it was NOT an expansion.

ironic.

FordGTGuy5362d ago

adds something to an already existing game to add longevity. Halo ODST provides a unique multiplayer and singleplayer experience and provides a singleplayer on the level of most full games. Doesn't sound like an expansion to me.

theEnemy5362d ago

wow.

Seems like you're saying that Halo 3 : ODST brings something uniquely new!

Too bad the reviewers missed it.

;)

DonCorneo5362d ago (Edited 5362d ago )

54.2 is the right score

so let me get this straight: this POS did not improve upon gaylo 3. the graphics are the same. the maps are the same. guns are the same. it looks dated compared to killzone 2 and still this crap gets an 8.

why are the bots excited about this one?

lordkemp0075362d ago

Your spot on 100%.

I would give an agree, but i am on ps3 browser and it doesn't seem to let me.

IGN digusted me giving this flop a 9 for graphics.

Another One5362d ago (Edited 5362d ago )

you don't judge a game on its price. If the price dropped their score at all then that's sad. I don't care what game it is or what system it's on. You shouldn't do that. Judge the game on its own merits, not the price.

I don't care if it got an 8. I was expecting between 8-9, but if that 8 is mostly because of the price then that isn't right.

Panthers5362d ago

I disagree. The game needs to justify the price. I mean if this was just DLC with a little extra, then $60 is way too much and reviews should show that. Thankfully this game looks like more.

Hallucinate5362d ago

i agree with the guy above me

i mean would you pay 60$ for one a those little sim expansions...value should be included into a review

Mo0eY5362d ago

You're right. $60 for an expansion is the perfect price! /s

I can't wait until next year when they inflate the full games' price because 10 million people bought an overpriced expansion. Thank you, Bungie and Kotick.

Another One5362d ago

that they shouldn't point it out. I'm also not saying 60 dollars is a great price. I don't think a review should be down graded because someone doesn't agree with the price. You judge the game based on the game itself. You don't call it fantastic and then down grade the rating because you don't agree with pricing. That's misleading as to the quality of the game itself.

I don't think MW2 should be down graded because it's 10 buck more than normal.

aldesko5362d ago

I see your point, but you say "you judge the game based on the game itself". Well... at $60, it's being judged as a full retail game, while other games like Shadow Complex are judged as a downloadable game.

Do you really think a game like Noby Noby Boy would have a 75 on metacritic if it was sold as a full $60 retail game?

Pillage055362d ago

aren't reviews there to help consumers decide if a game is worth its price tag?

It's an outstanding game and so was The Old Blood. Also a lost era of gaming. Interesting, I received a physical copy of The Old Blood 9 years ago today from Poland. It was digital only in North America initially upon release so I had to import.

I disagree. Its still a fantastic game, with very good gunplay and a surprisingly loveable cast of characters and a good story trough many different and interesting setpieces

hiawa233d ago (Edited 3d ago )

All The New Order needs for my tastes is a this gen enhancement patch.

ChasterMies3d ago

I played New Order a couple of years after launch and I give it an 8/10. The shooter holds up because it is focused on being a good shooter. There is no crafting, no RPG elements, no open world find the question mark Weapons are fun. Enemies are fun. Levels offer a nice mix of stealth and shooting. You get to be the predator; this isn’t a game about fending off waves of enemies while a robot companion unlocks a door. Most importantly, New Order is the last of a dying breed of single player shooters.

Skuletor3d ago

Singleplayer shooters are still getting released every year, just look up "boomer shooters" and you'll find an an abundance of them. AAA fps campaigns, not so much.

Last year had Trepang2, RoboCop: Rogue City, Turbo Overkill, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, Dread Templar, Sprawl and more

DustMan3d ago

The games you mentioned are not from AAA developers. Wolfenstein likely had a budget that was probably as big as all those games you mentioned combined. I'm not knocking the new wave of retro shooters. I absolutely love them (I think some get much higher review scores than they deserve though). I just really wouldn't describe Wolfenstein as purely a boomer shooter based on the relatively cohesive story, with cut scenes and is fully voice acted. Full set piece moments.

AA development seems to be focused keeping the single player solo experience alive. But the big developers are only concerned about the MTX and milking players who enjoy multiplayer.

ChasterMies3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

The age of AA shooters. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing. I like less expense, shorter games.

Abear213d ago

Weird all the Wolfenstein articles.

Can you guess what will be announced at Xbox showcase?

DefenderOfDoom23d ago

What Machine Games did with Wolfenstein franchise is awesome. The game play definitely to me , is still very fun to play !!!
