Xbox 360 Elite drops out of top 50 sales post $299

Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 Elite fell out of the top 50 sales rank at retail this week following a price cut to under $300.

It really isn't a surprise; the 360 Elite simply isn't a match for the PS3 when they're both the same price. Some people will still go for the 360, sure, because they prefer the exclusive games, or more of their friends have the system. But when it comes down to people who are just looking for the most value, they're going to turn to the PS3.

Microsoft needs to either improve the value of the 360's Elite bundle by adding more to it, or further drop the price to $250.

If I were MS, this is what I would do:

Elite bundle: $279 - 120 gb hard drive, bundled network adapter, pack-in exclusive game

Arcade bundle $199 - 20 gb hard drive

Lower the price of the network adapter to $49 and the 120 gb stand-alone hard drive to $79. Improve Live's service so that it offers more features above and beyond PSN to further justify the price to consumers.

While this won't MATCH the PS3's value, it will at least put them on more even footing. The big gaps at that point will be Blu-Ray playback, and free online play, both of which would be hard to swing at this point in the 360's life cycle.

Even then, nothing is obviously guaranteed, but some changes will have to be made to the 360's pricing (particularly with their accessories) if they want to even have a chance at remaining competitive against the behemoth that is a $299 PS3.

Continuing to price drop won't necessarily increase the 360's sales. See, with the PS3, people have been WAITING for a price drop. Gamers have been saying this since the PS3 launched. The 360's price, however, has always been affordable, and the Arcade unit has been cheaper than the Wii for 3/4th of a year now.

Remember that the Gamecube system was always cheaper than the competition...

Well, M$ has already had the cheapest (both in price and build quality) console on the market now for about a year. Further price drops aren't going to do much except cause brief sales blips.

What they really need to do is offer compelling exclusives. That's what sells in the long term and brings in new customers.

Microsoft's E&D division that the Xbox is part of just posted an 30+ million dollar loss for last quarter. The company continues to do massive cost cutting and layoffs.

They already did their desperation price cut to 200 dollars. If they actually could afford more losses on the Xbox 360 they would have done so at the same time the Slim was introduced.

They're both here. Plus, the PS3 price drop happened in mid-August, and the slim was released around August 25. Meanwhile, the 360 price cuts didn't take effect until August 30, giving PS3 two weeks with a HUGE price advantage.

It will be interesting to see the official numbers as they start coming out in the next few weeks.

MS is in a very good position right now. Even with the $299 PS3 slim providing stiff competition, 360 sales continue to grow month over month and year over year. As I have predicted many times, PS3's gains will NOT come at the expense of the 360 - they will come at the expense of PS2 and Wii.

You took the ideas right out of my head. However, the tip of the iceberg would be to internally include the wireless adapter. It's quite sad that even the Wii has built in WiFi. The technology is so old and the thought of paying a hundred bucks for an outdated adapter seems ridiculous. Microsoft is now in a position to price cut their hardware and accessories by 30 percent or more. Right now, I think it's a wise decision to play the wait and see game. Going head to head with Sony's $299 console that has WiFi, Blu-ray, and free online play makes the choice obvious to any consumer that's indecisive about which one to get. I love my 360 and it's games, but Microsoft doesn't need to win me over anymore; it now has to capitalize on the market that's been holding out for a better value. With the Natal coming around the corner it would be naive for analyst or anybody to assume that a bomb in pricing won't be dropping soon. The $299 Elite is just testing waters. The Natal will be the relaunch of the 360 just as the PS3's new slim design is to their third relaunch. And yes, this is the third launch.

You don't get charged until your product ships so PS3 Slim's actual "sales" didn't register until the release day of September 1st, NOT when people pre-ordered a week early. I play the hell out of my 360 but for MS to compete long term with the PS3 at the current price point, they are going to have to bundle wifi with the elite console. That IMO is a big issue for anyone interested in the 360. I paid nearly a hundred bucks that that stupid adapter. I think it's time (way past actually) to integrate it with the console. Either way it'll return near the top when Halo drops.

The extreme sony folks on this site always take any positive news for sony to the extreme. PS3 is doing well but I expect 360 will do just fine, once again Amazon has become big news even though ps3 has been higher on Amazon bestseller list most of the time compared to 360 and still 360 has outsold ps3 consistently month to month by NPD#'s, although obviously ps3 sales are waay up now which will be reflected in NPD#'s still Amazon is just a small portion of the overall sales #'s.

That's just silly. I don't expect it to move consoles by the millions, but do you even remember what happened with the 360 during the holiday season last year? Gears of War 2, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts and Fable 2 were the massive releases of the holiday of 2008. These 3 games alone caused the 360 to move about 900,000 units in 1 month in the states. Do you remember that? There wasn't even a Halo game.

I have a sense that the majority of Elite sales right after the price drop were existing 360 owners grabbing the larger hard drive or a second box with less wear and tear - not so much new customers. I still have doubts Microsoft has the ability to pull in new customers going forward because a new customer has had the ability to join the 360 base for 199 and the numbers haven't been impressive. I also doubt there was a bunch of people out there waiting for a 360 price drop to buy one. If it was priced 99 or 49 I'm sure they could appeal to impulse shoppers and new customers, but anything over 100 and people start to question its value.

I know one thing for a fact to this, Microsoft is not only facing a $100 price drop from the PS3, but also a console redesign, a radical redesign at that.

Nothing short of giving away 360s will phase the PS3 Slims sales.

If Microsoft wants an effect they need what Sony has done with the Slim, a redesign AND price drop.

One other concern, I don't know if this is the case as I'm just speculating, Microsoft could be saturating their market. Again speculation. We know Sony's market is at least 100M strong. Microsoft has already sold equivalent of their previous XBOX market and all that is left is portions of Sony's market. Unless Microsoft offers incentives for Sony's remaining 80M market, their sales won't be going anywhere very quickly.

it boggles the mind that there were fanboys as far back as 2 years ago saying the 360 is this gens PS2. OF course most people with a brain shook their head in amazement at such delusional tripe but what can you do? everyone has a voice right? lol

now back to reality, the PS3 slim has a PROVEN 150million strong userbase to sell to. The 360? not quite. Add to that a pathetically weak lineup of first party offerings,RROD,E74, and the obsolete DVD9 and you really have to wonder what basis they used to make such wild and bold claims about the 360s future sales other than stealing exclusives from Sony and always being cheaper. Now that Sony has done a somersault and cornered the boys in redmond they are getting pummeled. The rest of us can just sit back and enjoy the show.

i work part-time in retail store and i see the weekly ads, but the thing that bothers me is that i see a big space for Elite with big $299 price then i turn the page and i see fat ps3 (not the slim) but not showing the $299 price at all. I don't think everyone know yet about the price drop for one console yet...so people buy Elite for $299 because they are not informed yet...I realize this may not be true with every store but i feel people should know the whole story about each of Console. The PS3 is a better deal no matter how you may look at it....

they also need to have 1 free year of xbl and 20 dollar download voucher and at the price of $250 elite. if they do that they might see some more sales but i think it will be to late if they wait more then 6 months to do this becuase ps3 just has to many awesome exclusive games comeing out and out that are pushing console gameing limits and once someone buys a ps3 or already has one all there money will go to these awesome exclusives leaving nothing for a new x360 purchase. Im glad I was right this whole gen about everything such as blueray, and graphics and that ps3 will win and beat even nintendo. unless the wii gets price cut to 179 then its dead. no way it should be 250 with that cheap tech.

The 360 arcade has been out more then a year now and has been the cheapest system out there priced at $199. Obviously if ppl wanted a 360 that bad then why hasnt the 360 had any wii like sales or ps3 slim like sales? It obviously means the DEMAND for the 360 is not HIGH. If ppl wanted a 360 they would have bought one already.

Also to those thinking Halo ODST will help microsoft move alot more sku's. Its not gonna move as many consoles as FF13 bundle in japan is gonna do. Yes Halo ODST will sell Millions of copies but it wont be a console seller like FF13 & GT5 Bundle.

The people buying the PS3 Slim are SONY Super Fans that traded their PS3's in for a Slim. Slim sales are going to completely TANK next week & the 360 will take the September sales crown for hardware.
