id: Xbox 360 Rage may have separate discs for campaign and multiplayer

In an interview with Shacknews, id Software prez Todd Hollenshead brought up a novel approach that the developer may use to minimize disc-swapping with the Xbox 360 version of Rage: give the game's single-player and multiplayer modes their own discs.

"We'll probably have two DVDs for sure, and then the question is, will multiplayer be on a separate disc or not?" Hollenshead posed. "It makes no sense for a player to swap that disc in multiplayer, right? That's fail. They have to keep one disc in during multiplayer, can you just put all the multiplayer content on one DVD?"

Sounds like a good idea to us; although, in the same interview, the id boss implies that the final number of DVDs the the Xbox 360 version of Rage will ship on isn't exactly settled, wondering, "Will we have to go to three?" We don't care how many discs it's on -- just make sure the game goes to 11.

considering that i spelled nothing wrong i think you fail harder than anyone in here

-MD-5368d ago

Not seeing a capital 'x' on xbox or a period. Ouch big fella looks like you just got owned.

FlipMode5368d ago

Oh Sh!t! i didn't put a CAPITAL X! yeah dude to totally owned me on that post I'm gonna go cry now T_T

Microsoft_Spokesman5368d ago

At least you agree that the Xbox is full of fail.

-MD-5368d ago

Where did I say I agreed? Right I didn't.

Microsoft_Spokesman5368d ago (Edited 5368d ago )

You never said no, or say it isn't full of fail. You said "So is your typing". That means it is full of fail and so is his typing (which I don't agree to).

Go cry some more xbot.

@Murderdolls/1.9

YOU try harder. You know that I owned you and all you can come up with is a 3 word sentence. Well actually 2 since the last word was you begging me to "try harder".

Fvcking nub, you know the PS3 is kicking the 360's ass left, right and center so you go to damage control. Pathetic xbots with their furnacess.

StayHigh5368d ago

wow they thinking about at least 3 disks? if not maybe even more...lol..sucks for the 360 owner that need constantly switch disk hah and rage will run better on the ps3..the power of the ps3 is showing!!

dustgavin5368d ago

Try harder? You mean try not to put the game on too many discs?

fuckoffodion5368d ago

he's a fvcking lying loser who tries real hard not to be retard. I mean REAL HARD. But he's a fvcking retard. Right Muderdoll? You want a cookie? hmmm? a cookie you stupid piece of sh1t.

bennyace5368d ago

What are we going to do? (sarcasm).
Why is it that it fits on 2X 8.5 go discs on xbox 360 but needs 50go to run on PS3. What takes the rest of the available space on blu-ray

topdawg1225368d ago

This isn't Writing class guys, it's freakin N4G. Anyway this game looks awesome from the new teaser, if both console versions are the same, i would definitely go with the ps3 version if you have a choice between the two. No disc swapping for me

bennyace5367d ago

I read the rest of the comments and a lot of people say that they don't want to get up and change disc. Wow you young guys are really lazy. What would you have done when the only way to play video games was to take a walk to the local arcade? Probably you would've stayed home and watch tv. And probably always the same channel because not all tv's had remote back then. It's un believable.

50CALheadshot5367d ago (Edited 5367d ago )

he has no problem supporting last gen technology that breaks repeatedly and has no games.

yet he complains about a RELIABLE 300 dollar ps3 with bluray and exclusive games that the 360 can never replicate!!!

stupid bot. u must love gettin bent over by microsoft.

stupid retard, have you not been paying attention?

with every passing day, the ps3 pushes gamers to the next level....and while doing that and pushing the gaming industry forwards, the 360 becomes smaller and smaller on the rearview mirror. 360 cant keep up anymore. 360 is outclassed in features and functions, reliability and value per dollar.

With every day that goes by the 360 is closer to becoming extinct and useless when compared to sonys offerings...just like your precious hddvd.

-MD-5368d ago

Wouldn't bother me.

Once you're done with the campaign how often do you go back to it? I rarely do.

Ninji5368d ago

A lot of people just play a little bit of the single player, then go to multiplayer, play a bit more single player, and go back to multiplayer. Rage supposedly seems like it will be a long game too which just makes the problem even worse for 360 owners.

-MD-5368d ago

People do that? I usually finish the campaign before even touching multiplayer.

We lived with multiple disc games through PS1 and PS2's lifetime so another couple of years of it won't kill me.

White-Sharingan5368d ago (Edited 5368d ago )

@Murderdolls- Depends on the game, if the SP has replayability I do come back to it, also depends on trophie/achievements as well. Like those that are like: "Beat the game on hard", "Beat the game on Extreme!!", "Beat the game on Jesus mode!!!!!" or "Dont be killed throughout the whole campaign", etc..

u get my point. It is not a OMGWTF!!!!!!!! issue, but if I had the choice between having SP and MP on one disc or having them on separate discs...which one do you think I would pick? separate of course!...

Blaze9295368d ago (Edited 5368d ago )

Its not a big deal as you are making it out to be. In fact, I think its actually fine to do that. halo 3 ODST is doing this....HALO, does that mean it will be a problem for Xbox 360 owners to have separate modes on different disc? No and it wont be a problem here either.

This is seriously hardly even near a big deal. Looking at the disagrees Murderdolls keeps getting is sad. Likely from people who dont even own a 360 and want to spin this into a big deal situation.

-MD-5368d ago

Take a look at those disagrees! Jesus the Sony fans are out to get me today.

Christopher5368d ago

Actually, if they can get it split this way, it's the best way to do dual discs. This way the need to swap discs during play is greatly reduced since you'll likely only do one or the other and not switch between them.

Montrealien5368d ago (Edited 5368d ago )

and I may get a hernia from all these useless news articles. I mean seriously, if you actually care about this crap you are a joke as a gamer.

This is not a big deal, unless you will be getting it on the 360 and lack the IQ of 46 that it takes to swap discs. The 360 uses DVD, it has limitations, get over it.

JokesOnYou5368d ago

Surely everything on one disc would be ideal...but swaping the disc for multiplayer won't bother me one bit. On a side note it will be interesting to see just how big this game is, the graphics so far look like they'll be great no doubt but nothing mind blowing better than other top notch shooters, so hopefully this is a huge open world game with tons of content otherwise I'll take this as more pre-game hype we've seen all too many times from devs.

JOY

Sarcasm5368d ago

Actually this makes more sense than to split the single player into multiple discs.

Anybody remember Gran Turismo? Two disc game, 1st disc was Arcade Mode and 2nd Disc was License Career mode.

Just put in the disc you want to play.

And to the guy above, I don't think it's really common for people to jump back and forth from Single player to multi-player, or at least not from anyone I know.

It's usually common for people to blow through the single player, and spend the rest of their time on multiplayer.

TheIneffableBob5368d ago

It sucks when you lose one of your discs. A couple of my PS1 games aren't playable anymore cause I lost some discs.

NegativeCreepWA5368d ago

Looks like their s alot of lazy fat f*$*s on this site. I never had a problem doing it with GT2.

gamesR4fun5368d ago

a lot better than playing the sp n having to switch disks

btw did they make cuts to get this on 2 disks... they were sayin they wanted to do 3 but ms royalties were too high last year...

CWMR5368d ago

-I think it is pretty obvious that virtually none of the actual 360 owners care about this. It really isn't an issue. The people that pretend that it is an issue are people with an agenda.-

ABizzel15368d ago

I think this is a good idea, single player on one disc (if it can fit) and multiplayer on the other.

SixTwoTwo5368d ago

Its not going to kill you to swap discs is it? If you're getting the PS3 version then this means that you're getting a game in which a 3rd Party developer is actually taking advantage of the Bluray space. 2-3 discs equals 15-22.5 GB's. Most devs games are 7.5GB or less (exclusing SCE games). We are getting more game here. This is a good thing.

ThanatosDMC5368d ago

Just have an install option that outta fix everything. They'll just shaft the arcade owners.

starvinbull5368d ago (Edited 5368d ago )

Finally! A developer that is willing to do things properly.
Whoever said that the worst case scenario would have been 2 single player discs is wrong. The worst case scenario is that they could have gimped the game to get it on 1 disc.

I'm thinking... GTAIV.

morganfell5368d ago

360 owners would care about this ...if they could.

But they can't because it would be just one more acknowledgment the console is outdated by using last generation storage media.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Megan Fox5368d ago

It don't matter if it has more than one DVD, the truth is it will sell more on X360 than PS3 like almost every other multiplataform game.

DARK WITNESS5368d ago

ok, i am not sure if i missed anything..

have they actually said if the game can be installed on the 360 HD or not ? because if it can, whats the problem?

I mean lets face it, this is a game that will prob appeal to a hard core gamer, and i know i don't know any hardcore gamers that actually have 360's without HD.

sure, depending on the ammount of crap you have, you may need to delete some stuff. But why not just install everything ?

If they have specified that you can't install any of it onto the HD, then ok i can see why some would complain although personally i think its nothing more then a minor inconvenience. Naturally there will be some people who will just use this as a reason to B***Tch and Moan about the 360.... as if they actually own one in the first place ( we know who you are ).

but i really don't see the issue.

Highwayman5367d ago

It really isn't a big deal, people. Anything to downplay any other console other than PS3. I for one don't mind a bit. I'm not so lazy that I can't get up to swap out a disc. I remember a time when everyone was happy to do this because it meant a larger game. Now typically the only people I see complain about this are PS3 owners.

I see no problem here, what is more I no news here...

lokiroo4205367d ago

Yeah not a big deal, but, lmao, DVD's, lmao.

ShabzS5367d ago

doesnt bother me ... smart move from id actually .. makes sense

Montrealien5367d ago

lets see morgan, last month 1.2 million consoles using (outdated) storage tech where sold to people who played many many games on them and enjoyed them, and that is without counting the PC gamers who most dont even care cause they download mostly. And then we have the PS3, using the bestest storage tech in the whole wide world and it only sold 120k.

now, I am not saying that the PS3 sucks, I would never do that since I love all of my consoles. however I would say that hundreds of thousands of people in NA alone dont give a rats ass about what medium their games use, just that they have goodd games.

morganfell5367d ago (Edited 5367d ago )

Well Dark Witness, tell that to all of the people that take issue with PS3 installs. Especially considering the relative prices for HDD upgrades on each respective console.

The fact is the install shoe is on the other foot and now people can't stand the treatment they were so liberally dishing out.

pixelsword5367d ago (Edited 5367d ago )

...how would you coordinate playing on different multiplayer maps with different discs if it came to that?

I'll have to weigh the pros and cons of getting this on the PS3 or 360 before I buy. The 360 was the central platform for working on this, but I'd like to have everything on one disc.

Perhaps I'll flip a coin; what I'm really concerned with right now is if the game is actually any good.

Guido5367d ago

Get it together man! lol

@Game13a13y , that makes no sense at all. You say poor Xbox (enthusiasts) I say poor (enthusiasts) all around who actually would agree to a stupid analogy.

The reality however is that both the 360 and the PS3 are BMW M3 GT4 models, and I will even admit that the PS3 is the better tuned one, however the storage medium is the trunk space and the games are the race tracks. Also, the internet will find someone to flip what I just said.

indysurfn5367d ago (Edited 5367d ago )

Excuse me? That can't be good? That means that I can borrow my buddies campaign disk once he finishes it! This is awesome ! I have two buddies that play a game, and then go crazy with the multi-player part. I can just borrow the campaign disc. Because he is always saying I can borrow his to play the story mode, then give it back. I'm sure there are other people that don't care for multi player as much. In fact I head a lot of PS3 players say that they don't care about xboxlive vs psn because they mostly play campaign.

So let me get this straight, all these lazy hipocrites can't swap one disc AFTER the game is over? Fantoys trying wishing arguing this to be a big deal. These are the same fantoys that bragged that a ps2 game was awesome because it took 5 disc to hold the game. It only takes 5 seconds to change a disc! Plus you can borrow a game without stopping your friend from still playing it online! This is a advantage. I hope this is not the last I see of this. This could push this game over the top on sales.

Update: This is a genius move, by the developer. I think this has happened on another system(not sure if it was dreamcast, xbox1, or ps2). I just called my buddy that I mentioned above I told him I will pay $20 he will pay $39. I get the single, campaign disc first, then once I'm done I will let him use it, and he will let me use the multi until he is done. At first we where just thinking about buying this game. I hope other people are intelligen to try this. It could start a pattern for both xbox360, PS3, and wii. You can get a game and play the part you want most (unless your not one of us that mustly prefer the campaign or multi player parts). We will split any tradein at the same ratio 1/3.

shovelbum5367d ago

That makes perfect sense to me. We all know the disc limitations of the 360 and separate ones for campaign and MP is the only way to go IMO.

Thugbot1875367d ago

I own a 360 and don't mind getting off my butt to switch dvd's. When I have a problem with switching DVD's is when switching happens often. Example: GTA if you had to switch disc based on different areas of the city; so your driving along and the next thing you know you have to switch disc. That would suck but this, there is nothing wrong with it. PS3 owners want to make a big deal out of it, it's not. Think about how many PS2 owners have to do that in some games. Didn't hear you guys calling foul then.

duplissi5367d ago

you mean omfg! i have to get my lazy ass off the couch?.....

you guys make me sick, actually complaining about that- do you still live with mommy?

who givs a crap we all did it with ps1/2 so i dont see what the fuss is all about

just get it for ps3 and be done with it.

gaffyh5367d ago

Makes sense to do this, but MP usually uses the same textures and maps as the SP. Anyway, they must be seriously trying hard to squeeze this on to two discs. I probably will get the 360 version in the end, but the added comfort of not having to switch the disc at all on the PS3 version is looking more and more appealing.

-EvoAnubis-5367d ago

Some people here are saying "well, I did it for GT2 and MGS and FF7 and all that, so it's fine now."

That was on the PSOne. Two entire generations ago. Back then there's a lot of things you couldn't do. Online play? Yeah right. Cross game chat? What the hell is that? Custom soundtracks? Keep dreaming!

Why is it okay to have to switch disks for things here in 2009 when it's not okay for games to not have other features that also weren't there back then? What kind of sh*t is this?

potenquatro5367d ago (Edited 5367d ago )

Because Sony having no disc swaping is pure coincidence. BD is new. It's the first time ever a Sony format has taken off like this. There are other companies making better formats as we speak. There will come a time were you will have to disc swap on a PS console. BD is not the "end-all" format, and if a new format gets industry suport and doesn't make business sense to Sony, they won't use it. People used to swap discs on PS before, they will do it again. Going all crazy cause the format war went in Sony's favor, is missing the big picture, thinking in an obtuse way ignoring console history and setting yourself to look bad.

If history teaches something, is that history DOES repeat itself. Disc, or whatever format we use, including BD, have limitations.

-EvoAnubis-5367d ago (Edited 5367d ago )

Bull. Ever hear of CDs? DVDs? Those seemed to do okay.

Coincidence? What the hell is coincidental about every other console on the market ever using a larger storage format for games each generation EXCEPT for the Xbox?

Hell, even Nintendo figured that one out.

Oh, and by the way, there are 200GB BD-ROMs in development as we speak (type), and all that needs to work on the PS3s on the market right now is a firmware upgrade.

morganfell5367d ago (Edited 5367d ago )

The biggest smackdown in this argument comes from Evo with his comment that out of the last three generations, every generation Sony has opted for the next gen disc format. MS elected not to do this.

Not only did it severely wound them, it damaged all gamers by pushing devs toward DVD9 for development. There was no need or freedom or push past DVD9 boundaries. Instead devs and publishers geared themselves toward money rather than creative freedom. With Multiplatform games aimed toward keeping both PS3 and 360 versions as similar as possible, PS3 owners were in effect a victim of the MS limitation. It even had an effect on PC titles.

You can add to this that the failure to include a HDDVD drive internally in the Xbox 360 cost Microsoft and Toshiba the format war.

starvinbull5366d ago

Blu-Ray is better for games than DVD9.
The transfer speed being the only drawback has been blown apart by those great first party games that feature no load screens.
Are we really suggesting that the cheapest least troublesome format should always win out because it saves the consumer paying slightly more on a console.
I don't know if games will regularly exceed the DVD9 limit this generation but if they do isn't that a good thing? Better textures, audio, bigger levels. Why are people so resistant to it?

Tinted Eyes5368d ago

this gen is far from over so expect this whole dvd thing to become limiting for next gen games on the box

PirateThom5368d ago

Hardly a big deal. (or as big a deal as some people will make of it)

socomnick5368d ago

Yea not a big deal, if devs struggle with the size limit in the 360 then they should follow ID.

That way the sp can be a full 8 gigs or whatever size the dvd 9s are.

Montrealien5368d ago

could not of been said any better.

Bnet3435368d ago

Not a big deal. Nope. SP on one disc, MP on the other. Seems okay.

BBCnewsrocks5368d ago

not saying disk swapping is anything to get worked up about - cause you know it only takes a gazillion years to walk a few feet to change a disk - or anything. But it's something that we shouldn't have to do in this day and age.

Now, if only hd-dvd were built into 360s...

-MD-5368d ago

Yeah it shouldn't be there but things like this definitely won't be a problem when the next generation of consoles come out.

akaFullMetal5368d ago

since hd-dvd is sort of dead, maybe the next xbox will have blu-ray?

Oner5367d ago

Murderdolls says ~ "Yeah it shouldn't be there but things like this definitely won't be a problem when the next generation of consoles come out"

Some of us have been playing on a next gen system for quite a while now already...you know

Blu-ray for gaming and entertainment ~ STANDARD
Rechargeable Wireless Controllers ~ STANDARD
The use of USB Peripherals ~ STANDARD
The use of Bluetooth peripherals ~ STANDARD
WiFi ~ STANDARD
Multi-player access for FREE ~ STANDARD
Web Browser ~ STANDARD
Handheld gaming device (PSP) connectivity ~ STANDARD
Backwards compatibility ~ STANDARD
Linux capabilities ~ STANDARD
HDMI from day 1 ~ STANDARD
Video rental service WITHOUT paying additional via Netflix ~ STANDARD

You know looking back over that list I have to say, FFS that's A LOT OF $#@! (Oh and if I forgot anything please feel free to add to it ;P)

And before you go trying to spin stuff about how the NEW Slim does not have 1 or 2 items listed above, REMEMBER I am talking about something that has BEEN available for over 3 years now...the ONLY TRUE Next Gen console to have been released. The PS3.

See Next Gen is not subject to just being "new" it infers having MORE, DIFFERENT, BETTER and as EVERY single iteration of the PlayStation brand has PROVEN to offer this, there is no equal. PERIOD.

I'm still learning how to look for the differences. At first I was focusing on shadows for some reason but I don't think that changes much, is it reflections that change?

rashada071774d ago (Edited 1774d ago )

It is supposed to be simulating how light actually works- so yes if light is reflecting off a surface accurately it should show reflection or an effect that matches what you are looking at in the environment. Next time you play a game look at a puddle of water there may be just a "baked" in texture that if you aren't paying attention seems like it is reflecting but it isn't. I would say though if the light is reflecting more accurately I would think that would give more accurate shadows as well.
I am still not 100% sold on it- it looks okay but I can't get over the hardware price jump for better reflections..

Taz X141774d ago

While games won't look immensely better, it opens up more possibilities overall. Understandably, the price jump is huge. But, that can be said for being at the forefront for any new technology. I'm currently using a 2080ti and while I've played a few games that enable it, the gpu also plays everything else incredibly well so it's not like you're buying this tech for ONLY that option. Enthusiasts will pay top dollar to check out the newest things, but this will eventually become an everyday consumer and by then they'll have optimized and become a lot cheaper.

warriorcase1773d ago

Ray/path tracing can be used how the developer wants it to be. Tracing can be used to calculate shadows/lighting, reflection and even audio, where audio waves are calculated on the bounce off material types to simulate enviroment and echos accuratly.

Should also keep in mind that this ray/path tracing system is different and less accurate option from Nvidias RTX branded type. McFly's is a reshade that layers over the top of the game and therefor the quality will vary drastically. For example you can see nice reflection in the Star Wars demo here but it then introduces colour clipping with the light saber. On a video of GTA 5 for example it was incorrectly projecting a reflection of a red car onto the road which caused a very faint red glow on the ground around the car.

If you want to see a good example of a game developed with ray tracing reflection and lighting in mind then you could look up the youtube video of "Control - Exclusive E3 RTX GAMEPLAY Trailer".

DigitallyAfflicted1774d ago

It supposed to add more realistic light Not actually more light effects and explosions

traumadisaster1774d ago

I hate to say it but I’m fine with fake lights, shadows, reflections. I just kind of like the effect, it’s also great it saves resources for other things.

I’ve been checking out some original Xbox games on x360/x1x and the engine has fake light streaming in through a stained glass window, and I love it even though I know it’s not real time lighting. Heck it even shifts as I move about.

I’ve about convinced my self rt and hdr just doesn’t work for me. Before hdr I would even complain damn why are the headlights killing me they are so bright.

I notice most frame rate, then jaggies, then resolution; with the last two interchangeable depending.

Other day watched an enthusiast rave over 4k and the poor guy was in 1080p. I played the same game the night before and thought wow this is clean, I wonder if it’s 4k, but knew differently and I thought wow even resolution is not always important. The next day he apologized and was surprised he could be fooled.

How come the lightsabers don't give off any light? Even in the EA star wars game the guy uses it to light up a dark cave. I guess if it is using frostbite it will support rtx cards.
